Florida: Candidates for Rubio’s U.S. Senate seat Positions on Term Limits

Last month, Florida solidified its status as the term limits state, by passing the Term Limits Convention bill through the State Legislature.

Now, with the 2016 general election on the horizon, Florida voters will be making a big decision about who will be our next U.S. Senator. Departing Sen. Marco Rubio was a term limits supporter. We’ve asked the candidates to sign our pledge to support congressional term limits once they get to the Senate. Here are the responses so far:

Republicans:

Rep. Ron DeSantis – Signed USTL Pledge
Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera – Signed USTL Pledge
Rep. David Jolly – Refuses to sign USTL Pledge
Todd Wilcox – Refuses to sign USTL Pledge
Carlos Beruff – Entered race late, no recorded position

Democrats:

Rep. Alan Grayson – Refuses to sign USTL Pledge
Rep. Patrick Murphy – Refuses to sign USTL Pledge

That’s where we stand right now. Of course, this race is very fluid and U.S. Term Limits’ activists are pressing all of the candidates for their commitments to restoring a citizen government.

Using the Term Limits Convention approach, the states can bypass Congress and obtain a term limits amendment on their own. But, it’s still important to have term limits supporters in Congress, to advocate firmly for the issue and prevent Congress from proposing a weaker term limits amendment to rival the convention.
