Have we Abandon Israel and the Ranches that are under attack, the environment and poor families of Israel who cannot afford to buy meat even for Shabbat?

The Longhorn Project Offers Israel a Solution for Hunger and a Message of Support
The Israel Longhorn Project, the inspiration of Robin Rosenblatt, CEO, was first imagined in 2007. With a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from California State Fresno University and a Masters in Animal Science from Hebrew University, Rosenblatt understood all too well the cattle problems plaguing Israel and was struck with a solution. Before he knew it, the project became a holy task he felt driven to accomplish in order to give this precious, life-giving gift to Israel’s ranchers and, in turn, the nation of Israel. His mission is to help strengthen the war torn country by bringing them Texas Longhorn cattle.

The Problem with Israel’s Current Cattle Herds

Because the European beef cattle brought to Israel 60 years ago were bred for rich pastureland instead of Israel’s semi-arid desert environment, they have not thrived as expected. Not only are these current passive cattle weak and prone to genetic diseases, they are unable to protect their young from jackals, wolves and cattle thieves.

Another problem has cropped up because the non-native shrubs cultivated to feed the cattle are highly flammable under the deserts extreme conditions, easily causing devastating forest fires, which become a threat to the entire region. These cattle can’t eat the native vegetation, and as feed costs continue to rise, there is further hardship to the ranchers and ultimately to the general population in the way of high beef prices The European cattle also have poor mothering skills, a high rate of birth complications and they reproduce for only about 10 years.

    Texas Longhorns to the Rescue!

The solution comes right out of the old American West. The hardy Longhorn breed, when introduced into the Israeli ranchers’ existing stocks, will bring with them their desert tolerant genetics. This will improve the herds’ adaptability to the Negev’s extreme heat and lack of water. Here is a list of some of the Longhorn’s other advantages over Israel’s European cattle:
    • Longhorns are highly resistant to disease.
    • Because of their excellent calving and mothering abilities and their long, sharp horns, they are very protective of each other’s calves from predators.
    • They eat easily ignited invasive shrubs, as well as native vegetation, thus lowering fire hazards and feed costs.
    • Longhorns have higher reproduction rates and very low calf losses, reproducing for up to 18 years.
    • Longhorns use less land, feed, water and antibiotics, making them more economical to raise.
    • Longhorn cattle produce healthy, organic lean meat

Bottom line, the Longhorn project intends to lower the cost, while at the same time, improve the quality of the beef, which in turn, greatly aids the Israeli ranchers and consumers.

How can Texas Longhorns be Such a Simple Answer?

Texas Longhorns aren’t originally from Texas! They actually originated in the Black Sea area between 5,000 and 15,000 years ago. They lived and traveled through great Middle Eastern deserts, eventually moving westward into ancient Israel and arriving in Spain. Columbus brought them to the New World in 1494, and by 1865 they had grown into millions in the scrubland of the American Southwest and Mexico. Because they were tolerant to the desert conditions of long ago, they could be driven long distances to market without much weight loss. This is how America’s cattle industry was born.

It’s Time to Take the Longhorns Home!

So, bringing longhorns to Israel isn’t as novel an idea as it first seems. The Israel Longhorn Project simply intends to bring them back to their heritage of desert living that made them hardy, fertile and protective in the first place. The strategy to make this monumental undertaking a reality will take place in 4 phases:

    1. Establish a Longhorn breeding program in Israel by creating an educational, environmental, self-sustainable, research ranch using humane cattle handling methods called “Stockmanship” and ecological grazing techniques called “Strategic Grazing.”
    2. Demonstrate to ranchers how well Longhorns thrive in a desert environment.
    3. Teach ranchers how to raise Texas Longhorns, safely and humanely.
    4. Donate Texas Longhorn cattle to ranchers so they can breed the desert tolerant genetics into their herds.

Not only will we improve a vital food source in Israel, our project will also create jobs, internships and volunteer positions.

    Sponsors and Donors Needed

Rosenblatt asks “Jews and Christians of good faith, join this holy task, for generations to come.” Of course a project of this magnitude needs corporate sponsors, individual donors and volunteers to make it a reality. Rosenblatt hopes people will understand the problem and feel moved to support the solution that will help Israel, a country under attack and isolated by the world. Every donation is a gift that will impact the entire nation, and let them know they have not been forgotten.

The Project will support itself in the 5th or 7th year. It is the only self-sustainable nonprofit in America.
