Canada: ‘Police’ in Arabic on Ontario Police Car

The word ‘Police’ in Arabic on a London Ontario Police Service Car serving the Arabic speaking population draws outrage. Canadians see this as an example of favoritism and inconsistent with French Canadian values.

To see the Arabic language becoming an official provincial language in Ontario instead of French is unconscionable.

arabic on canadian police carA reader from Ontario writes:

As a true Canadian I am outraged and insulted by these pictures I have recently seen of the London Police Service cars. Are we in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan or Syria???

The fact that the decals are on the car in the first place should be insulting and disturbing to all Canadians. However the fact that they’re situated above the Canadian flag is is not only insulting, it’s demeaning to the memory of our Canadian soldiers who fought and died in all wars.

What do these words say? As a Canadian who speaks one of the two official languages I have no idea. I can tell you this. If I was a French speaking citizen of not only London but Canada in general I would feel doubly outraged. I don’t see any French words on the car.

Why do we keep bending over backwards and selling out our true Canadian culture for a small minority of the population. You come to this country then assimilate. Learn our language and our laws. If you don’t like it then leave.

It’s time to put an end to this. We are slowly losing our identity and we’re just passively letting it happen.

Esphandyar Ghyassi posted on Facebook, “I called London Ontario Police now and officer came with a kind of explanation which I really didn’t get it. This is the number (519) 661-5670 Please call them and raise you voice. 30% percent of population in B.C. are Chinese. But I never saw Chinese language 警察 (means police) on Police cruisers.”

This is yet another example of the Islamization of Canada.

It actually is in other languages, including Mandarin. It is not in French because the translation of “Police” is “Police”, nor is it in Spanish or Italian due to similar translations (ie “Policia”). This is a simple and easy gesture to make more people feel welcome with police, please don’t warp.

It does seem to be a slap in the face to the notion that immigrants should learn the languages of the host country. Also, while ‘police’ is a word in French, if there were a French version it would read ‘Police de London’ , not London Police.

Try critical thinking rather than emotions – you’d be surprised what you’ll discover.

So. This has been around since 2009. At the time, London Police Service took the 10 most spoken languages in the city and put one on several different cars. There’s English/French (police is spelled the same in both) Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, Persian and Polish. Maybe we need to check our paranoia and hate a smidgen, eh? Best not to blindly follow fools.

    A few points:
    a) they do multiple languages, including Mandarin
    b) they don’t do French, because “police” en Francais est “police”
    c) they’ve done this for at least 4 or 5 years and it has caused zero issues.

Don’t skew facts to suit your racist narrative. And to those saying “everyone knows a police car”, everyone also knows an ice cream truck, doesn’t mean we can’t put a small gesture of welcome in other languages. Finally, to those discussing the flag, it’s with a physically flown flag. Things are put above drawn/painted flags regularly, such as at many police stations, fireballs, and government offices.

I don’t mind if a Chinese book vendor only has signs in Chinese; he is addressing his clientele, but having foreign languages on cruisers makes it seem like these immigrant communities have a higher likelihood of being involved with the police. It’s like a nice way of racial profiling.

I’m a Québécoise and I embrace this thing called “common language” on a territory. Before being inclusive, the immigrant need to be inclusive and respectful with the new society by learning the language and accepting its basic values. A big majority of immigrants think this way but “inclusive” Canadians with their superiority complex treat immigrants like children. They tell them to stay on their side with their own language and that’s perfect because, this way, they never be socially above them.

As a Francophone, I feel this new interest for “all in diversity” SO hypocritical because of the total disinterest of English Canada for first nations and french canadian cultures.

Frankly, given your history, I don’t think the US has anything to teach Canada about police-community relations. We get our philosophy from Sir Robert Peel (look him up): The police are the people and the people are the police. If the people cannot communicate with the police, very bad things happen to your society — but I don’t have to tell you that, do I?
