Senator Nancy Detert (R-FL): Ted Cruz does not reflect “true Republican leanings”

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is coming to Florida to speak and receive the Republican Party of Sarasota (RPOS) “Statesman of the Year Award.” One Republican State Senator is having none of it.

Joe Gruters, RPOS Chairman.

Senator Nancy Detert (R-FL District 28) takes exception to Joe Gruters, RPOS Chairman, inviting the likes of Senator Ted Cruz and former Congressman Allen West to speak. Allen West will be the featured speaker at the February 12th RPOS Lincoln Day Dinner and Senator Cruz on February 20th will speak and receive recognition for his statesmanship at the annual Statesman of the Year dinner.

Jeremy Wallace from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune writes:

State Sen. Nancy Detert, R-Venice, said she’s not sure all those Gruters attracts reflect the area’s true Republican leanings. But she said it may represent the GOP leadership within the local party.

“We are not a Tea Party county, but it is a Tea Party executive committee,” she said of the leadership panel that runs the local party.

Still, Detert said Gruters is bringing in big names and giving Sarasota Republicans a chance to see national players up close, whether the rank-and-file membership supports a speaker’s positions or not. Read more.

It appears that Detert is violating California Republican Party Chairman Gaylord Parkinson’s Eleventh Commandment, “Thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican.” The goal of the Eleventh Commandment was to prevent a repetition of the liberal Republican assault on Barry Goldwater, attacks which contributed to Goldwater’s defeat in the 1964 presidential election. The Eleventh Commandment was later popularized by former President Ronald Reagan.

Perhaps it is Detert who does not reflect the growing dissatisfaction felt by Occupy Wall Street, TEA Party members and Americans in general with a federal government out of control. Is Detert implying that Sarasota Republicans want bigger government, more taxation and more regulation? She is certainly leading that charge in the Florida Senate. Her votes reflect a progressive agenda at best.

Detert is characterized by some as a “Charlie Crist Republican.”

Many are angry that John Boehner and eight-six of his Republican colleagues, including Rep. Vern Buchanan, voted on October 16, 2013 to end the government shut down by funding the government and raising the debt ceiling. Had the Republican controlled House of Representatives held to conservative principles embodied by Senator Ted Cruz for a few more weeks the story would have been much different. For it was at the end of October the Florida Blue sent out notices to 300,000 Floridians saying their health insurance plans did not meet the criteria of Obamacare and were therefore cancelled. It was the end of October that Healthcare.gov began to crash and burn, and it still is.

Perhaps it is Detert who does not reflect America’s true leanings, which are truly reflected by Senator Ted Cruz?
