The Capitol Riot And The Reichstag Fire: American Leftists And Nazis

The history of the Reichstag fire and how it was used by the early German Nazis to crack down on their primary political opponents, German Communists, is eerily illustrative of the Capitol riot and following days.

The Reichstag was the building in which the German Diet, it’s parliament or Congress at the time, met before World War II. It was the Capitol building equivalent.

In 1933, as the Nazis were trying to consolidate their power, a fire destroyed a large part of the building. It was just the work of a handful of provocateurs, or possibly just one Dutchman. But the Nazis seized the opportunity and immediately began suspending civil liberties and cracking down on the German Communists.

The Reichstag fire and crackdown on political opponents was just weeks after Adolf Hitler won election as Chancellor of Germany. The Capitol riot and crackdown on political opponents was just weeks after Democrats won elections controlling Washington.

The Nazis did not crack down on the Communists in response to the fire. They had been wanting to eliminate the Communist voices for a while and they seized the Reichstag fire as the opportunity to do it.

As Wikipedia rightly explains: “The Nazi Party used the fire as a pretext to claim that communists were plotting against the German government, which made the fire pivotal in the establishment of Nazi Germany.”

FYI, turned out that the Nazi claim that the Communists were plotting against the German government was a lie. But truth doesn’t matter when an opportunity presents itself. This maxim was explained by Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel, who, during the Great Recession in 2008, said,

“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before.”

The American left in the media and Silicon tech oligarchs have been wanting to silence conservatives and Trump supporters for years now. They had slowly been banning the right from media platforms. There are very few token conservatives in mainstream news pages, and virtually no Trump supporters among hundreds and hundreds of opinionators. Monolithic. Social media had been de-platforming the outside edges of the movement and shadowbanning many who are in the mainstream of the right. It was a slow strangle.

But the Capitol riots presented the Reichstag opportunity to go for the jugular, starting with the stunning cutting off of the President of the United States from directly communicating with Americans, followed by deleting dozens of right-wing accounts and culminating with the complete take down of Parler. There is no way to believe this was not coordinated among the tech oligarchs who had to know they would be free to do so with Democrats in control now.

The speed and coordination of this silencing by the American left would have been appreciated by the Nazis, though of course they would have gone further with violence.

In a short time after the Reichstag, the Communists were destroyed as a Nazi political opponent — killed, imprisoned or fleeing. Few on the American left advocate violence at this point, but silencing political opposition has been a necessary step of every authoritarian takeover.

The authoritarianism of the American left is on full marching display. Anyone who cannot see it simply does not want to, or is part of it. The left crushes dissent on religion, Trump support, election questioning, mis-gendering, support for Israel, immigration, and so on. They want to control and limit Americans’ most basic freedoms, and it appears they now have the means to.

When Germany, France, Norway, Australia, Mexico and the Russian opposition all condemn the social media silencing of the United States President and worry about their own free speech violating the whims of Silicon tech oligarchs, you know American Democrats are out of touch with basic American liberties. The deadly wrong side of history.

Those who are merely concerned about this moment, are not awake. If you are not angry and frightened, you are not awake. As the good German who was not a Nazi but looked away as things devolved, and the good Russian who was not a Stalinist, but looked the other way, there are too many good Americans looking the other way.

History will repeat itself in some fashion if we don’t see this dire threat. It already is under way.
