FL Rep. Matt Gaetz Leads the Fight to Defund Special Council Jack Smith’s Investigation against President Trump

Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL District 1) in a July 21st, 2023 email stated,

I used this week on Capitol Hill to amplify the voice of Northwest Floridians by introducing critical legislation to halt Special Counsel Jack Smith’s politically motivated investigation of President Trump. This legislation aims to block federal funds from being allocated to Special Counsel Smith’s office and investigation. It is vital the American people know where members of Congress stand, and it is incumbent upon the House of Representatives to defund Smith’s office and put an end to this witch hunt.

On Tuesday, I introduced legislation to finally stop Special Counsel Jack Smith’s politicized and corrupt investigation of President Trump. My bill would block federal funds authorized or appropriated by federal law or any funds in any trust fund of the federal government from being used for Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office.

The power of the purse is not something Congress wields every fiscal cycle — it’s something that we have to wield day in and day out to achieve victory for the American people. Our nation deserves to know where members of Congress stand. I am proud to take the lead on defunding Jack Smith’s office and ending the witch hunt on behalf of the American people.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) on Wednesday announced he would introduce legislation to defund Special Counsel Jack Smith, who may be seeking yet another indictment of former President Donald Trump in the midst of a presidential election.

Gaetz tweeted Thursday:

BREAKING: I will be introducing legislation to DEFUND Jack Smith’s witch hunt against President Trump.

They are attacking our democracy and engaging in election interference right now.

The United States Congress has the capability to stop this election interference, and we must act immediately!

He said on his podcast, “The House of Representatives needs to take action to defund this special counsel investigation immediately. We do not need to wait for the appropriations process…we don’t have to wait for the Holman rule or some rider.”

“They are attacking our democracy and engaging in election interference right now. And if the United States Congress does not have the capability to stop that election interference, then what is all the flowery oratory about preserving the Republic? We have to operationalize that,” he added.
