Democrat Nate Silver: Pollsters ‘cheating’ to keep Trump, Harris close

One prominent Democrat pollster said other pollsters are “cheating” to show the White House race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris remains close in the final days before Election Day.

On his “Risky Business” podcast, Silver expressed skepticism about the motives behind these polls, claiming that many are recycling data to artificially keep Trump and Harris within a narrow margin. “I find it hard to trust pollsters these days,” Silver noted. “When every poll shows states tied or Trump only slightly ahead, it feels like they’re trying to skew the narrative.”

He highlighted the statistical improbability of so many polls landing on such close margins, emphasizing that consistent one-point leads across numerous surveys suggest intentional bias. “You can’t expect every result to show just a one-point difference when sampling hundreds of people. It’s misleading!”

Silver’s analysis currently shows Trump with a solid 55% to Harris’s 45% nationally, with key swing states also reflecting very tight margins—often within just 2 percentage points. “It’s clear that if every swing state is neck-and-neck, it’s indicative of a broader trend favoring Trump,” he asserted.

He specifically criticized “GOP-leaning firms” for frequently projecting Trump as narrowly ahead, suggesting that they are not willing to fully acknowledge his strength in the race. “Many pollsters are playing it safe instead of accurately portraying the enthusiasm behind Trump’s campaign,” Silver stated. He did, however, praise The New York Times for occasionally providing more surprising and insightful data.

Silver further argued that reputable pollsters should be willing to present unexpected results to maintain their credibility. “If a pollster never surprises you, their data becomes questionable,” he concluded.

In his column, Silver hinted at his own instincts regarding the election, stating, “My gut says Donald Trump will prevail, and I suspect many concerned Democrats share this sentiment.”
