JAILBREAK!

As Democrats book plane tickets to El Salvador to try to rescue the “father of the year,” the media is seizing on the case of another “Maryland man” who is on the path to deportation …

JAILBREAK!

Democratic Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen hopped on a flight to El Salvador on Wednesday morning to check in on his favorite “constituent,” Kilmar Abrego Garcia, and attempt to lobby President Nayib Bukele for his release.

A quick refresher on the facts:

Abrego Garcia is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who was affirmed to be a “verified member of MS-13” by two immigration judges. Abrego Garcia successfully obtained a withholding of removal order by claiming he might be killed by a rival gang if he returned to El Salvador.

He ended up being put on a deportation flight to the CECOT prison in El Salvador, which the Trump administration contends was a mistake.

The Supreme Court asked the Trump administration to “facilitate” Abrego Garcia’s return, but Bukele made very clear during an Oval Office visit earlier this week that he has zero intention of sending a likely gang member — and one of his own citizens — back to the U.S.

Democrats have decided that Abrego Garcia is their cause célèbre. Van Hollen is the first to cross the border for the infamous “Maryland father,” but Sen. Cory Booker is also reportedly looking to organize a trip. Think he’ll bring a rock hammer?

Let’s do a fun little comparison to put into perspective what the Democrats are doing:

Van Hollen has referred to Abrego Garcia as his “constituent” and falsely claimed he is an “American citizen.”

“I don’t think he wants to essentially be the president who’s kidnapped the United States citizen,” Van Hollen said of Bukele.

Van Hollen’s office later claimed to the Daily Caller News Foundation that he “misspoke.” Nonetheless, he will fly nearly 4,000 miles round trip to try to bust Abrego Garcia out of prison. Van Hollen “won’t stop fighting until he’s home,” he said.

Meanwhile, Van Hollen has an actual constituent and U.S. citizen who was murdered by an illegal alien. Rachel Morin didn’t have the courtesy of Van Hollen attending her funeral or even calling or meeting with her family after her death.

“I’m actually outraged … He did not call our family; he did not give condolences,” Rachel’s mother, Patty Morin, told Fox News. “There was no action … in Maryland none of the Senators did anything to help search for the murderer of my daughter.”

We also learned Wednesday thanks to reporting from Andy Ngo that Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer, petitioned for a domestic violence protective order against him in 2021. Jennifer married Abrego Garcia while he was in immigration custody in 2019, presumably to help him avoid deportation, and is now raking in cash on a GoFundMe by claiming Abrego Garcia is an “excellent father.”

An alleged transnational gang member and alleged wife beater? Van Hollen’s got your back. Family member of someone murdered because of his party’s border policies? Sorry, no dice.

With that out of the way, allow me to turn your attention to the next media-nominated candidate for “Maryland father of the year.”

Newsweek and the Frederick News Post have both written glowing profiles about an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, Alexi Canas, since he was picked up by ICE in early April. Canas immigrated illegally to the U.S. in 1995 and was handed over to immigration officials after appearing in court for driving on a suspended license in Maryland.

Both media publications downplayed the severity of Canas’s criminal history, tugging at the heartstrings by repeatedly reminding the reader that he has eight anchor babies.

“Father Living in US for 30 Years Detained by ICE Over Driver’s License,” Newsweek’s headline reads.

“For the past month … Alexi has not been home to greet his children. The last time they saw him was March 10, when he appeared in Frederick County Circuit Court to face a charge of driving on a suspended license,” the Frederick News Post reported before helpfully providing a link to a GoFundMe for his legal expenses.

As was the case with Abrego Garcia, the full story is far more unflattering.

Canas’s first criminal offense dates back to 2003 when he was busted with marijuana and associated paraphernalia. He was pardoned last year when Democratic Gov. Wes Moore issued sweeping pardons for all misdemeanor marijuana offenses.

Canas was taken to court by the state of Maryland on two occasions for failing to pay state taxes.

Canas’s more recent driving history is more egregious than simple “traffic violations,” as Newsweek and the Frederick News Post described them.

It appears that Canas has been driving with a suspended license for at least ten years. His first violation dates back to March 2015. Authorities had to issue a bench warrant after he failed to appear in court.

He was stopped again in December 2016 and was again found to be driving with a suspended license.

In November 2023, he was pulled over for going 94 MPH in a 55 MPH speed limit zone. Later that year, he was summoned to civil court in two private debt collection cases.

Here are the rest of Canas’s “traffic violations”:

March 2024: Pulled over for going 90 MPH in a 70 MPH speed limit zone

April 2024: Caused an accident while speeding and was driving on a suspended license

August 2024: Failed to appear in court after driving with a suspended license

November 2024: Refused to provide police with a license after being pulled over, again found to be driving on a suspended license

December 2024: Caused another accident after failing to yield while making a left turn. His license was still suspended and he failed to attend a driver improvement program.

January 2025: Pulled over for going 69 MPH in a 45 MPH speed limit zone. Failed to display his license when approached by police. Was found again to be driving with a suspended and expired license.

It was only at this point, after causing two accidents with his reckless driving in less than a year — when he didn’t have a valid driver’s license to begin with — that Canas was referred to immigration authorities for removal. We’re lucky he didn’t kill someone first.

Overall, Canas has 60 court cases on his record in the Maryland judicial system.

I’m sure Van Hollen will be begging for his release from ICE custody any day now.
