Lifetime Taxes, by State
I was sent this interesting graphic from this article. It said:
This visualization maps the estimated lifetime tax bill for a single filer in every U.S. state, including federal and state income taxes, as well as sales, property, and vehicle taxes.
The data for this visualization comes from Self Financial, with estimates as of June 2026.
The analysis assumes a 45-year working life with constant earnings and tax rates, a life expectancy of 79.6 years, homeownership beginning at age 40, and ownership of five vehicles over a lifetime.

I had a firsthand experience when we moved our primary home from New York State to North Carolina. For example, the property taxes on our NY home were 5± TIMES the property taxes on our new NC home — and they were both valued almost identically… Gas prices are almost always 40±¢/gal lower in NC… Cost of electricity in NC (per KWH) is less than half the per KWH cost in NY. Etc., etc.
One obvious observation is that the highest tax states (those more reddish) are almost all Democrat run.
Those who now complaining about the cost of gas should look more closely at all the other taxes they are paying in their State.
