Florida: Islamic bias found in high school history textbook

Creeping  Shariah reports:

Two Brevard School Board members are reviewing a world history textbook used in ninth grade Advance Placement classes amid concerns that it is biased in favor of Islam — at the expense of Christianity and Judaism.

House Representative Ritch Workman and individuals from two citizens groups spoke against the textbook, Prentice Hall World History, at the Brevard School Board meeting Tuesday, citing examples of phrases and passages they believe show bias.

“Our children deserve facts and accuracy, not history being revised for our own failure or desire to not offend one culture or another,” said Workman, a Republican from Melbourne.

The textbook, which has been used in Brevard for the past three years, devotes a chapter to Islam, with sections including the rise of Islam and the building of the Muslim empire. Conversely, Christianity and Judaism do not have their own chapters and instead are referenced in paragraphs embedded in other sections.

Workman also expressed concern about how historic events are portrayed and what phrases are used. For example, he said the textbook reads Jesus proclaims himself to be the Messiah but declares Muhammad becomes a prophet.

School board members Amy Kneessy and Andy Ziegler promised to review the textbook, which is published by Pearson, a well-known printer of educational textbooks.

“No matter what the subject is, whether it’s math, English, science or world history, students need to have accurate, unbiased information,” Kneessy said. “If textbooks are unbiased or incomplete, it’s our job to fix that.”

Pearson Spokeswoman Susan Aspey said the company and its authors adhere to “the highest editorial standards when creating course materials, which undergo a rigorous review process.”

“The textbook referenced was approved by the state of Florida and meets all requirements for the High School World History Course,” she wrote in an email. “A review of the book shows there is balanced attention given to the beliefs of Islam, Judaism and Christianity.”

Ziegler said the underlining issue is accuracy and fairness — and should be investigated.

Florida convert to Islam indicted for jihad terror plot

Robert Spencer from Jihad Watch reports:

Yet another convert to Islam misunderstands his new, peaceful religion as involving violence against non-Muslims. There are no converts to Christianity who have misunderstood it as involving violence against non-Christians — so it doesn’t seem to be a general misunderstanding. Nonetheless, no mosque or Islamic organization in the U.S. has any program to teach converts to Islam to reject this understanding of Islam that they ostensibly reject. But government and law enforcement authorities don’t seem in the least concerned about that, so why should anyone else be? What could possibly go wrong?

“Jacksonville teen indicted for conspiring to Jihad terrorist plot,” by Paris Carerra for WOKV.com, July 18 (thanks to Pamela Geller):

The State Attorney’s office announced a grand jury indictment charging a local teenager for conspiring and attempting to provide material support to terrorists. He has been identified as 19-year-old Shelton Thomas Bell. According to the indictment, Bell planned to travel to the Arabian Peninsula, an alias for Al-Qaida and participate in “Jihad” activity. The indictment alleges between May 2012 and September of 2012, Bell and others participated in training and other preparation for armed conflict in the Middle East described as “the actions of Jihad.” Bell is accused of trying to gain the help of others, including juveniles to travel overseas. Investigators say he engaged in making audio and video recordings to be distributed to others once he arrived in the Middle East.

The case was investigated by the FBI’s Jacksonville Joint Terrorism Task Force. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison for both charges.

The Washington Post reports, “According to court records, Bell made video and audio recordings intended to be distributed to others once he arrived in the Middle East. The purpose was to solicit and recruit others there to participate in violent jihad, federal authorities said.” Bell grew up in Jacksonville and his parents live in the northeast Florida city.

FBI Orders Florida Medical Examiner to Keep Boston Bombers Friend’s Autopsy Secret

A Florida medical examiner’s office said Tuesday that the FBI has ordered the office not to release its autopsy report of a Chechen man fatally shot by a Boston FBI agent in May in Orlando, FL because of the federal agency’s active internal investigation into his death.

The medical examiner’s office said it completed the autopsy report on Ibragim Todashev, a friend of suspected Boston Marathon bomber, on July 8 and that the report was “ready for release.” The agent shot and killed Todashev on May 22 in his Orlando apartment during an interrogation related to the Boston Marathon bombings.

“The FBI has informed this office that the case is still under active investigation and thus not to release the document,” Tony Miranda, forensic records coordinator for Orange and Osceola counties in Orlando, said in a letter to the media today. Miranda said state law bars his office from releasing the report if an criminal investigation is ongoing.

The FBI and the Justice Department are conducting an internal inquiry into the shooting, but critics have called for an independent inquiry, questioning the blanket of secrecy surrounding the case.

The FBI and the Massachusetts State Police sought out Todashev after the Marathon bombings, but have refused to release details of the shooting. Media reports have provided conflicting accounts: Some said Todashev attacked the agent with a blade during an interrogation, while others said Todashev was unarmed. Another said he lunged at the agent with a metal pole or a broomstick.

Hack this: Researchers turn Verizon device into ‘mobile spy station’

As Florida Verizon customers are just recovering from the revelation that their phone records are being shared with the National Security Agency a new wrinkle appears. Verizon phones may be used as spying devices.

Verizon Florida is the largest cell phone carrier in the state. According to the Verizon Florida website, “Verizon’s powerful networks continue to meet the growing broadband, communications and information needs of Florida and Tampa Bay area consumers and businesses, as the company invested more than $347 million in its Florida wireline networks and information technology infrastructure in 2012.”

GEO Intelligence reports:

Security experts said they have managed to spy on Verizon Wireless mobile phone customers by hacking into devices sold by the US carrier, further fueling the controversy over privacy issues in the wake of the NSA leaks.

Tom Ritter and Doug DePerry demonstrated for Reuters how it is technically possible to eavesdrop on text messages, photos and phone calls made with an Android phone and an iPhone by using compromised Verizon products.

The hacking requires nothing more than a femtocell, which serves as a small cellphone tower to boost signal reception, which Verizon sells for $250; dozens of other carriers also offer the same technology.

The finding comes at a time of intense international debate about privacy after former NSA analyst Edward Snowden last month blew the whistle on a top-secret US surveillance program, known as PRISM, which has the capability to collect and store records on telephone and internet communications around the world.

The Verizon discovery, however, would put the power of spying into the hands of ordinary citizens, according to the researchers.

“This is not about how the NSA would attack ordinary people. This is about how ordinary people would attack ordinary people,” said Tom Ritter, a senior consultant with the security firm iSEC Partners.

Verizon announced it has updated the software on its femtocells to thwart hackers from carrying out a similar attack on its system.

Betrayed: The High Cost of the War on Terror

On August 6, 2011 Florida residents Billy and Karen Vaughn lost their son Arron when the helicopter he was in was shot down. Arron was a member of SEAL Team Six. Now Billy Vaughn has released his new book, co-authored by Major General (Ret.) Paul Vallely. The book is titled, “Betrayed: The High Cost of the War on Terror“. The book is being released in August.

betrayed book coverAbout The Book

August 06, 2011, 2:20 a.m.—Operation Lefty Grove is underway, a highly dangerous mission to take out another high-level Taliban operative, three months after the death of Osama Bin Laden.

In the pitch-black dark of night, twenty-five Special Ops Forces and a five-man flight crew board Extortion 17, a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. Seven unidentified Afghan Commandos are allowed to join them.

Ground forces have already been engaged in a three-hour intensive battle. Extortion 17’s specially trained warriors drop into the Hot Landing Zone to help their fellow warriors. But there’s a problem: the standard chopper escorts have all been directed elsewhere. Mission directions are unclear. Worse, pre-assault fire to cover the Chinook transporting our brave fighting men is not ordered.

Extortion 17 comes into the landing in this hot spot for terrorism. The Taliban shoots down the chopper.

There are no survivors.

Over the next few months as unsettling information on the tragic incident is released to the families, Billy Vaughn, father of one of the downed Special Ops warriors, becomes increasingly disturbed. He is told that the Rules of Engagement have prevented our brave defenders from protecting themselves.

Adding insult to injury, he later learned an Imam was invited to “pray” over their dead bodies. As they lay in their caskets before their last flight home, the Imam damned America’s fallen warriors as infidels who would burn in hell. The Imam boasted over their deaths with words such as “Muslims are the winners.”

BETRAYED: Exposing the High Cost of the War on Terror is a book Billy Vaughn still wishes he didn’t have to write. But his son is gone and there are still unanswered questions. He needs to know if finding the truth may prevent another father from standing in his shoes.

When this bereaved father meets retired Major General Paul Vallely, he finds an ally. General Vallely lends his expertise and in-depth understanding to this tragedy as the two describe in stunning detail the step-by-step events that led to the downing of Extortion 17.

Together they expose the military shift in policy from winning wars to “winning their hearts and minds,” which leaves America’s military in dire peril.

If not reversed, this failed strategy spanning the past two political administrations, will ultimately open the doors to our enemies on our own soil, leaving our country, our homes, and all our families unsafe.

Throughout the process of writing this book, several government officials have made it clear that they are not interested in the truth. When a high-ranking Military officer asked Billy to remain silent, Billy Vaughn asked him, “Sir, what kind of man do you think I would be if I was silent about the things that we have found out?”

Florida: Beware of the terrorists among us

Hezbollah flag.

Hezbollah (the party of Allah) supported by Iran is a terrorist organization that is fighting with the Assad regime in Syria.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, “Hezbollah is a Shiite Muslim political group in Lebanon with a militant wing the United States defines as a terrorist organization. With significant support from Iran and Syria, Hezbollah maintains an extensive security apparatus, political organization, and social services network in Lebanon, where the group is often described as a ‘state within the state’  … [T]he U.S. government considers Hezbollah a global terrorist threat and a menace to regional stability.”

In the report “Los Zetas and Hezbollah, a Deadly Alliance of Terror and Vice Terence Rosenthal writes, “When Americans think about the illegal drug trade and black markets in Mexico, it is probable that they do not associate them with terrorism, or Islamic fundamentalism. One would think that drug cartels like Los Zetas, the most sophisticated and second most powerful drug cartel in Mexico would have enough allies and connections not to need the assistance of an organization like Hezbollah based halfway across the world in Lebanon. However, there is proof that Hezbollah, as well as elements of the Iranian Quds force are functioning with cartels like Los Zetas, the most sophisticated drug cartel in Mexico. The combination of power hungry cartels like Los Zetas, and terrorist organizations like Hezbollah who want a presence in North America, in or near the United States inhibit U.S. companies from wanting to conduct business in Mexico, and should not remain unnoticed.”

Los Zetas beheadings.

According to the National Drug Intelligence Center known Los Zetas cells are in Miami, Gainesville and West Palm Beach, Florida.

The National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC) assesses with high confidence that in 2009, Mexican drug trafficking organizations (DTOs) were operating in the United States in at least 1,286 cities spanning all nine Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) regions, based on law enforcement reporting.

Moreover, NDIC assesses with high confidence that Mexican DTOs in at least 143 of these U.S. cities (see Appendix A) were linked to a specific Mexican Cartel or DTO based in Mexico—the Sinaloa Cartel (at least 75 cities), the Gulf Cartel/Los Zetas (at least 37 cities), the Juárez Cartel (at least 33 cities), the Beltrán-Leyva DTO (at least 30 cities), La Familia Michoacán (at least 27 cities), or the Tijuana Cartel (at least 21 cities). NDIC assesses with high confidence that Mexican DTOs will further expand their drug trafficking operations in the United States in the near term, particularly in the New England, New York/New Jersey, Mid-Atlantic, and Florida/Caribbean Regions.

Rosenthal notes, “Since 2005, Iran and Hezbollah have developed a presence in Latin America, opening 17 cultural centers, and forming relations with the Mexican drug cartels. 200,000 immigrants from Lebanon and Syria, many of whom are illegal residents, live in Mexico, and have established residence with the help of drug cartels like Los Zetas, the most technically advanced of Mexico’s drug cartels.”

“The lure of criminal activity and the drug trade, coupled with the presence of Hezbollah and Iranian Quds forces in neighboring Mexico present the United States with a major threat at its borders,” writes Rosenthal.

Was FL Senator Bill Nelson less than truthful about Benghazi?

Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) sent out a May 7, 2013 email reply to a constituent about the Benghazi attack. In the email Senator Nelson states:

Thank you for contacting me about the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which killed four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. I was one of the first to call for hearings to get to the bottom of what happened. I questioned members of the Administration as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and, more recently, as a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. [Emphasis added]

Senator Nelson was not a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee when he sent the email. He is currently on the Aging,  Budget, Commerce, Armed Services and Finance committees. On November 15, 2012, Tom Curry, NBC News national affairs writer, reported that when Senator John McCain (R-AZ) called for a special Benghazi panel, “A Democrat in the Intelligence Committee, Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida, flatly rejected McCain’s proposal: We have all the relevant committees, including the one that I sit on which is Intel. We’re having a hearing on that tomorrow and he (McCain) sits on the Intel Committee as ex officio (as the senior Republican member of the Armed Services Committee).”

Senator Nelson goes on to state:

The military’s initial response began within minutes of the first incident in Benghazi. An unmanned, unarmed surveillance aircraft was moved over the Benghazi compound. Secretary Panetta and Gen. Dempsey conferred first with the President, and then with senior officials including Gen. Carter Ham, U.S. Africa Command. During those meetings, Secretary Panetta ordered two fleet antiterrorism security team (FAST) platoons to prepare to deploy. The Secretary also issued verbal prepare-to-deploy orders for two special operations teams. In the 12 hours between the start of the attacks and the evacuation from Benghazi, DoD postured forces to meet any contingencies that might develop. The independent Accountability Review Board found that the interagency response was timely, and that no alternative or additional armed U.S. military assets were available within a timeline to be effective in Benghazi. [Emphasis added]

Testimony since this email was sent portrays a completely different picture of what happened in Benghazi. On the ground military assets in Libya were not deployed in a timely manner. Those assets in Europe and the Mediterranean that could have been deployed were told to stand down.  The handpicked Accountability Review Board included as Chair, Former Under Secretary of State Tom Pickering. Note the subpoena referenced in a letter to Pickering in mid-May by House Oversight Chair, Darrell Issa:

Your refusal to allow staff investigators to interview you is inconsistent with your commitment to be “tough and transparent.” I hope you will reconsider your position in order to assist the Committee in gaining a full and complete understanding of the ARB’s work, and to help us address concerns career State Department officials and others have raised. In light of your continuing refusal to appear voluntarily for a transcribed interview, however, I have found it necessary to issue a subpoena to compel your appearance at a deposition. This subpoena creates a legal requirement that you appear in room 2157 of the Rayburn House Office Building at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013, and that you answer questions fully and truthfully. It remains my preference for you to appear voluntarily for a transcribed interview, and if that should also become your preference, please notify my staff and I will consider lifting the subpoena.

Nelson’s letter concludes with:

Congress must do its part to ensure that Americans working abroad are safe from attack. Earlier this year the Senate passed legislation that I cosponsored allowing the transfer of $1.1 billion to enhance security at U.S. Embassies. I remain concerned about the spread of extremism in North Africa, and I assure you that I will keep your views in mind as Congress works to address these issues. [Emphasis added]

On May 16, 2013 Glenn Kessler from The Washington Post fact checked the underfunding of security for Benghazi and found, “During hearings into the attack last fall and this month, State Department officials were specifically asked if a lack of financial resources played a role in the attack. The answer was no.” A key finding in the ARB report was: “Security in Benghazi was not recognized and implemented as a ‘shared responsibility’ by the bureaus in Washington charged with supporting the post, resulting in stove-piped discussions and decisions on policy and security. That said, Embassy Tripoli did not demonstrate strong and sustained advocacy with Washington for increased security for Special Mission Benghazi,” Kessler reported.

Was Senator Nelson pushing the administration’s talking points? His email indicates discrepancies that he should have known about before he sent it.

St. Lucie (FL) Commission to change zoning laws to accomdate Islamic cemetery

Creeping Sharia reports:

Board of County Commission St. Lucie, Florida

The St. Lucie County Commission on Tuesday is scheduled to vote on a rezoning request to allow for an Islamic cemetery.

In a 6-0 vote June 20, the St. Lucie County Planning and Zoning Commission, with three members absent, approved a request by Adel Nefzi to rezone about 5 acres on Christensen Road south of West Midway Road to institutional from agricultural residential for the purpose of building a private cemetery for Baraka Center, a nonprofit Islamic educational and cultural center.

About 20 residents objected to the rezoning.

As usual, ignored by those who supposedly represent them.

Also, Nefzi received a conditional use to build a cemetery, as cemeteries regardless of religion, are not permitted under the county’s zoning code

Islamic faith prohibits Muslims from being buried next to non-Muslims.

The Islamic faith also tells Muslims not to take Christians and Jews as friends and commands Muslims to fight non-Muslims until they accept Islam.

Terror linked Muslim group has float in Florida 4th of July parade

Hat tip to Bare Naked Islam blog for bringing this to our attention. The Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR) with the support of University Islamic Finance is hosting a float in the Temple Terrace, FL 4th of July parade. So what is CAIR and why should we care about them having a float in a 4th of July parade?

To know the facts about CAIR Daniel Pipes has assembled an extensive bibliography about the organization. Pipes writes, “As more Americans become aware of the true nature of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, I am often asked to provide information on this group. In response, I have put together this “CAIR package.” To review Pipes’ “CAIR package” click here.

According to its website: UIF offers both Home & Commercial Real Estate Financing. In many cases UIF’s pricing is less expensive than even conventional lenders because they are partly owned by University Bank, a Community Bank based in Ann Arbor, MI. The financing transaction takes place under the Murabaha (Installment Sale) or Ijara (Lease to Own) structure both of which are approved by some of the top Islamic Scholars in the world. Islamic Society of North America conference in Tampa “to counteract different forms of extremism.”

The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) is holding a conference “to counteract different forms of extremism.”  It appears the extremism they are talking about is not the Jihadists of Islam that despise America and want to change its public policy.  The extremism that ISNA is referring to is the efforts by those who do not want Sharia law to have any place in American politics. Among those who have spoken out against ISNA is Dr. Zuhdi M. Jasser, Founder and President of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy.

Since 9/11 there have been over 21,000 deadly terrorist attacks conducted by Muslims, over 93,000 Syrians have died in a Sunni vs. Shia regional conflict, and sharia compliant Islamic regimes in Turkey and Egypt are clamping down on those petitioning their governments. The most recent Boston Bombing by two Muslim Americans adds to the growing distrust of shariah as both brothers were following its tenants while murdering fellow Americans.

According to the ISNA website the conference is scheduled for June 29, 2013 at the Sheraton Tampa East on 10221 Princess Palm Avenue in Tampa, Florida.  The Sheraton Tampa East is owned by Starwood.

Ahmed Bedier (right) in front of poster supporting terrorist fundraiser Sami al-Arian. For a larger view click on the image.

Ahmed Bedier is a featured speaker at the ISNA conference in Tampa.  Ahmed Bedier:

  • Is leading a national effort through United Voices for America to oppose federal legislation that would prohibit American courts from recognizing Sharia law.
  • As director of the Tampa office of the Council on Islamic-American Relations defended Sami Al Arian, who was indicted and pled to federal charges of raising support for a Palestinian Jihad organization.
  • As director of the Tampa office of the Council on Islamic-American Relations spoke on behalf of Youssef Megahed one of two University of South Florida students who were arrested for allegedly carrying pipe bombs near the Goose Creek, S.C a naval base and Megahed was arrested later for deportation.
  • Lobbying efforts as director of the Tampa office of the Council on Islamic-American Relations resulted in the Hillsborough County School Board removing Yom Kippur and Good Friday from the school calendar even after nearly sixty percent of the students (supported by parents) protested by staying home from school on subsequent Good Fridays.  See Note 4 with references below.

ISNA founder and former Secretary-General Sayyid Syeed said in 2006“Our job is to change the constitution of America.”  It is the Islamist mission to institute Sharia law as public policy in the United States.

The Clarion Project reported on May 30, 2013 in the article titled ISNA Redefines “Shari’a” for Western Consumption. The latest issue of the Islamic Horizons magazine of the Islamic Society of North America, a U.S. Muslim Brotherhood entity, has an article with this message:

The U.S could learn from Islamic law if it weren’t for the “Islamophobes” bashing Sharia.  The theme of the article is that “Islamophobes” are twisting the meaning of Sharia, and it is up to Muslim-Americans to set the record straight.

Some provisions of Sharia law are antithetical to the rights and liberties afforded under Article 6 of the United States Constitution, which states the US Constitution is the “supreme law of the land”. Under Sharia law the Quran supersedes any other laws, meaning the Constitution must conform to the Quran. Shariah requires the establishment of a single religion – Islam.

Email promoting ISNA conference in Tampa:

Subject: ISNA Day in Tampa is June 29, look who will be there

Asalaamu Alaikum-

ISNA is proud to be hosting ISNA Community Day in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, June 29th (inshallah) featuring Shaykh Mokhtar Maghraoui, Moutasim Atiya, country muslim singer Kareem SalamaWajahat Ali, Reverend Charles McKenzie and many more.

The event is from 3:00 PM – 10:30 PM at the Sheraton Tampa East (10221 Princess Palm Avenue). In light of recent events and frequent misconceptions about Muslims, the theme “The American Muslim Identity: Challenges to Opportunities” will focus on addressing the difficulties Muslims face and discussing practical and positive solutions to counteract different forms of extremism.

Note 1.  Ahmed Bedier is President of United Voices for America.  The top issue at Unitedvoices.com is opposing federal legislation to prohibit American courts from recognizing Sharia law.  The headline issue on this web site states “If passed, this legislation will be disastrous…”  Click here to read top article titled “UV Policy Brief: Should Sharia Law Be Banned in America?” at United Voices for America.

Note 2.  “Ahmed Bedier, Tampa spokesman for the Council on American Islamic Relations, said Moffitt was wrong about the Al-Arian plea. Al-Arian did not agree to admit to any charges associated with terrorism, Bedier said.

“He stayed true to his convictions – he stayed true he wasn’t going to plead to those issues,” Bedier said. “There is no conspiracy to support terrorism.”

Bedier said he could not reveal what charge Al-Arian agreed to, and he refused to reveal the source of his information.

Bedier convened a 7 p.m. news conference, saying he hoped to have Al-Arian’s family there. They did not appear.

“Their lawyer would not allow them,” Bedier said. He later said Al-Arian’s family learned of the plea agreement Friday from a news report.

All of the above statements were reported by The Tampa Tribune on April 15, 2006.

Note 3.  “We have faith in the American judicial system,” said Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations. “So far we’ve only heard and read about vague language describing an explosive device, but no actual evidence. Until that’s displayed it’s going to be unclear what’s going on.”

The above statements were reported by the Tampa Tribune on September 1, 2007.

Note 4:  CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) lead then by Ahmed Bedier placed intense pressure on the Hillsborough County School Board to include the Muslim day Eid Al-Fitr in the 2006-07 school year calendar.  The school board responded to CAIR’s pressure by removing Good Friday and Yom Kippur from the school calendar.

University of South Florida professor attacked for telling truths about Islam

Robert Spencer from Jihad Watch reports:

USF Professor Jonathan Matusitz

Professor Jonathan Matusitz is plain-spoken, if this report is accurate, but everything he says can be substantiated. This demonstrates yet again that there is no one who opposes jihad terror who is acceptable to Hamas-linked CAIR and its allies. When Hamas-linked CAIR targets so-called “Islamophobes” and details all their alleged enormities, some on the Right think that they can avoid this demonization and defamation by highlighting the work of “moderate Muslims” (Zuhdi Jasser, call your office) and talking about how the true Islam is peaceful. But the recent CAIR attack on Congressman Mike Pompeo shows that even they will not be spared.

In its “Islamophobia” report a few years back, Hamas-linked CAIR affirmed that there was acceptable and legitimate criticism of Islam and jihad. But the report offered no examples, and Hamas-linked CAIR has never offered any such examples. In reality, anyone and everyone who dares to oppose jihad and Islamic supremacism will become a target for a Hamas-linked CAIR smear campaign. CAIR’s real agenda is not to distinguish legitimate resistance to jihad from bigotry and hatred, but to stigmatize all resistance to jihad as bigotry and hatred, and clear away all obstacles to the advance of that jihad. Professor Matusitz is just the latest to be in its sights.

“Islamic group says UCF professor promotes anti-Muslim hate,” by Denise-Marie Ordway for the Orlando Sentinel, June 20 (thanks to all who sent this in):

The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is accusing a UCF professor of teaching anti-Muslim bigotry.Officials with the group sent a complaint to the University of Central Florida asking it to review the content of professor Jonathan Matusitz’s courses.

Matusitz, 36, has taught several communication classes at UCF, including one called Terrorism and Communication and another on intercultural communication. He wrote a book titled “Terrorism & Communication: A Critical Introduction” that was published last year.

The council points to a YouTube video of Matusitz as an example of his sharing “Islamophobic” views with students that it says are inaccurate, biased and over-generalized. UCF says that video, which appears to have been taped in a classroom, actually features an “outside-of-the-classroom presentation” that took place in January.

UCF spokesman Grant Heston said the school has received no complaints from students or Matusitz’s colleagues about his work.

In the video, Matusitz stresses the link between terrorism and Islamic culture. He also suggests countries should resist the global spread of Islam.

“Why do so many Muslims, relative to other religions, want to kill us?” he asks in the video. “The answer is easy, very easy. It is seven letters: culture.”

He also explains that Islam cannot be changed.

“How can you change a movement in which you have 1.5 billion members? It’s impossible,” he says. “We just have to resist it and just elect people who are willing just to resist it and just be true American. That’s the only answer. We’re not going to change Islam.”

Heston said Matusitz was not speaking on behalf of UCF, which does not endorse his views.

At this point, the university is not reviewing the professor’s lessons or work at UCF.

“Dr. Matusitz expressed his opinion, which is his right,” Heston said.

Note that the Orlando Sentinel doesn’t bother to mention that CAIR is a Hamas front, but does go out of its way to assert that ACT! for America “promotes anti-Islamic views.”

Thomas R. Pickering: The Benghazi and Khost coverups

Darren J. LaBonte, former Army Ranger, FBI agent and CIA operations officer. Photo courtesy of the Huffington Post.

Since President Obama took office there have been a number of strategically successful attacks by radical Islamists against US special forces units, the CIA and Department of State. In each case, due to security failures, these attacks ended in the largest loss of life for our Navy Seals (Extortion 17), CIA field operators (Khost, Afghanistan) and the first loss of a US Ambassador (Benghazi, Libya) in over 30 years.

One name that comes up in two of these tragic incidents is Thomas R. Pickering (above photo courtesy of the AP). Thomas Reeve “Tom” Pickering, is a retired United States ambassador. Among his diplomatic appointments, he served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 1989 to 1992.

Many have never heard of Khost, Afghanistan. However, Venice, Florida residents David and Camille LaBonte will never forget that name. Their son Darren James LaBonte, a former Army Ranger, FBI agent and CIA operations officer, was killed in Khost on December 30, 2009.

“Khost” is the short name for Chapman Airfield, a secret CIA operations base located near Khost, Afghanistan. It was on December 30, 2009 at Khost that the US suffered the loss of seven CIA operations officers, a Jordanian General Intelligence Department (GID or Mukhabarat) officer and two Blackwater security guards detailed to protect the base and its CIA personnel.

There was no formal investigation on the Khost incident by the US Congress. However, the CIA conducted an internal investigation ordered by then Director Leon Panetta, to look at what happened in Khost. According to Mark Mazzetti of the New York Times, “The internal investigation documents a litany of breakdowns leading to the Dec. 30 attack at the Khost base that killed seven C.I.A. employees, the deadliest day for the spy agency since the 1983 bombing of the American Embassy in Beirut. Besides the failure to pass on warnings about the bomber, Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi, the C.I.A. investigation chronicled major security lapses at the base in Afghanistan, a lack of war zone experience among the agency’s personnel at the base, insufficient vetting of the alleged defector and a murky chain of command with different branches of the intelligence agency competing for control over the operation.” [Emphasis added]

“Some of these failures mirror other lapses that have bedeviled the sprawling intelligence and anti-terrorism community in the past several years, despite numerous efforts at reform,” notes Mazzetti.

Mazzetti states, “The report found that the breakdowns were partly the result of C.I.A. officers’ wanting to believe they had finally come across the thing that had eluded them for years: a golden source who could lead them to the terror network’s second highest figure, Ayman al-Zawahri.”

Fast forward to September 11, 2012 and Benghazi. It was Pickering who lead the internal investigation ordered by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The Pickering Benghazi internal investigation found:

  1. The attacks in Benghazi were security-related, resulting in the deaths of four U.S. personnel after terrorists attacked two separate U.S. government facilities – the Special Mission compound (SMC) and the Annex.
  2. Systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels within two bureaus of the State Department resulted in a Special Mission security posture that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place.
  3. Notwithstanding the proper implementation of security systems and procedures and remarkable heroism shown by American personnel, those systems themselves and the Libyan response fell short in the face of a series of attacks that began with the sudden penetration of the Special Mission compound by dozens of armed attackers.
  4. The Board found that intelligence provided no immediate, specific tactical warning of the September 11 attacks. Known gaps existed in the intelligence community’s understanding of extremist militias in Libya and the potential threat they posed to U.S. interests, although some threats were known to exist.
  5. The Board found that certain senior State Department officials within two bureaus in critical positions of authority and responsibility in Washington demonstrated a lack of proactive leadership and management ability.

These two internal investigations sound eerily similar. Were both accurate portrayals that led to changes or just reports to be filed and forgotten? The Pickering report on Benghazi quotes George Santayana who wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” First came Khost then came Benghazi. Did our national leaders forget the lessons of Khost and did they repeat the same mistakes in Benghazi two years later?

You be the judge.

Second Billboard Blasts Senator Rubio for his “Amnesty First” Immigration Bill

Floridians for Immigration Enforcement announced it has put up a second billboard near the Jaguars’ Stadium in Jacksonville that blasts Senator Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) Senate Bill S.744, the “so-called ‘Gang of Eight’ Immigration bill”, that “would give amnesty to more than 11 million illegal immigrants before any attempt is made to secure the U.S. border against another wave of illegal immigration.”

“Not only did Senator Marco Rubio break his solemn pledge to our organization and Florida Tea Party leaders that he would oppose amnesty and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants when he ran for Senate, but he abandoned his promise to make sure the border is secure before considering what to do with illegal immigrants already here,” said Floridians for Immigration Enforcement Legislative Director Jack Oliver. The billboard’s text which also can be viewed above, reads:

The Rubio-Obama Immigration Plan

Amnesty: “Right Away”
Border Control: “Someday”

The billboard location is East-bound Arlington Expressway near the Fairgrounds in Jacksonville, Florida.”Besides breaking his own promises, Senator Rubio should explain why he trusts the Obama Administration to carry out any promises it makes to control the border after it gets the amnesty it wants, in light of Benghazi and the numerous falsehoods and cover-ups involved in the IRS, Associated Press and Fox News scandals,” said Oliver.

“Senator Rubio’s ‘Amnesty First – Border Control Someday’ approach in S.744 will only trigger a new wave of illegal immigration, and should be rejected by anyone who believes that America has the same right to control its borders that every nation on earth does,” added Oliver.
