Author on NPR Defends Looting: ‘We Can Have Things For Free’

In an interview last Thursday, the author of a book titled In Defense of Looting told National Public Radio (NPR) that looting enables rioters to steal others’ property with “an imaginative sense of freedom and pleasure.”

Vicky Osterweil explained her theory to a supportive NPR that looting is merely a means to address the unequal distribution of wealth. She claims there is a distinction between “the mass expropriation of property, mass shoplifting during a moment of upheaval or riot” and “any situation in which property is stolen by force.”

She added that looting “attacks the history of whiteness and white supremacy,” because “the reason that the world is organized that way, obviously, is for the profit of the people who own the stores and the factories. So you get to the heart of that property relation, and demonstrate that without police and without state oppression, we can have things for free.”

“Looting strikes at the heart of property, of whiteness and of the police…,” she added. “And also it provides people with an imaginative sense of freedom and pleasure and helps them imagine a world that could be. And I think that’s a part of it that doesn’t really get talked about—that riots and looting are experienced as sort of joyous and liberatory.”

Except by the people whose property is stolen or destroyed.

71 Known Connections

Over the course of NPR’s history, some of its broadcasts have made big headlines with their incendiary anti-conservative rhetoric. In July 1995, for instance, after Republican Senator Jesse Helms had stated that the federal government was spending too much money on AIDS research, NPR’s legal-affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg said: “I think he [Helms] ought to be worried about what’s going on in the Good Lord’s mind, because if there is retributive justice, he’ll get AIDS from a transfusion, or one of his grandchildren will get it.”

Fifteen years later, in 2010, the same Nina Totenberg, reporting on Barack Obama‘s nomination of Elena Kagan for the Supreme Court, described Kagan “as a modern-day Superman.”

In November 2009, the NPR website featured an animated video disparaging the Tea Party movement by teaching readers how “to speak Tea Bag.”

Social Isolation Is Damaging an Entire Generation of Kids

By keeping healthy children under quarantine, we are cruelly depriving them of the in-person free play and social interaction that are critical to their development and emotional well-being.

I read an advice article at Slate recently where a mom of a nearly five-year-old daughter wrote in to express concern that her child hasn’t seen any friends in five months, since COVID-19 lockdowns began. She said:

Because of COVID, my husband and I have decided to skip [pre-K] altogether and teach her everything she needs to know before kindergarten ourselves. This doesn’t worry me academically, but I am concerned about her development and the loss of the social interaction she was going to experience.

The advice columnist responded that the mom shouldn’t worry about her child’s social isolation, saying:

She is part of a whole generation of quarantined 5-year-olds. It’ll take her a while to catch up once she reenters society, sure—but it’s going to take everyone a while.

This resignation to ongoing government lockdowns, endless social distancing, mandatory mask orders, and travel restrictions—even as the virus wanes in the US—is damaging to our social and economic health, and may be particularly problematic for children who are separated from their peers.

While some evidence suggests that young people are faring well outside of forced schooling, with less school-induced stress and anxiety, the same research indicates that children and teens are missing their friends dearly. Social isolation seems to be taking a toll. With most large, urban school districts planning remote-learning only this fall, the isolation is likely to continue for many children—unless parents step in to alleviate this loneliness.

An article in The Wall Street Journal exposed the impact of pandemic-related social isolation on children and adolescents: “‘Of all age groups, this virus is probably more socially devastating to teens than any other group. They are bored and they are lonely,’ says Joseph P. Allen, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia.”

Another recent Journal article reinforced these unintended consequences of the lockdowns and social distancing on adolescents, and particularly girls: “Adolescent girls already were experiencing record-high levels of loneliness, anxiety and depression before the pandemic, according to Mary Pipher, a clinical psychologist and author of Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls ‘All of the things that a year ago were increasing girls’ depression have been exacerbated by the pandemic,’ [said] Dr. Pipher.”

Regardless of whether or not you think schools should reopen for in-person learning this fall, the reality is that kids need to be around other kids to play, socialize, and learn.

They don’t need this play, socializing, and learning to happen in schools.

In fact, they may find much more authentic, satisfying social play and learning outside of a conventional classroom. Peter Gray, research professor of psychology at Boston College, has written extensively on the importance of unstructured childhood social play for children’s health and well-being. In a June interview with NPR, Gray said:

Play is crucial to children’s development. And much of my research shows that over the last few decades, our children have been very play deprived. They spend so much time in school, so much time that homework after school, so much time in adult-directed activities which are not fully play — play is activity that children develop themselves — that children take control of themselves and their children learn to be independent and solve their own problems.

(To learn more about this, see Gray’s book Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life.)

If they were play-deprived prior to the pandemic, then many children may be more play-deprived now, as they have been cut-off from peers for nearly six months. Gray has documented the correlation between the decline in play and the rise in childhood and adolescent mental health disorders. This is something that is deeply concerning now as children, and especially adolescents, are even more distanced from their peers.

While technology has been a lifesaver for all of us during the pandemic, it has also consumed a much larger portion of children’s lives. A new report released this month by the Children’s Hospital of Chicago found that 63 percent of teens are using social media more than they did pre-pandemic, and more than half of their parents indicate that social media use is having a negative impact on their kids.

Perhaps more startling, the survey found that 68 percent of parents say that social media is interfering with their teen’s ability to have normal social interactions. Concerns about social media use and its impact on teen mental and social health were widespread before the pandemic, but it could be particularly troubling now as social media use soars while many teens remain separated from their friends.

The continued quarantining of healthy children and adolescents is misguided and deprives them of the childhood play and in-person social interaction that are critical to their growth and development. FEE’s Jon Miltimore wrote a great article recently saying this very thing, and providing international data on the low risks of COVID-19 on children. The health risks to children of the virus may be small, but the risks to children’s mental and emotional health from forced separation from peers is not. Miltimore writes:

The best scientific evidence we have shows that children have the least to fear from COVID-19. As the CDC points out, the common flu is far more dangerous for children than the coronavirus. A society that deprives children of the basic freedom to gather to play, learn, explore, and socialize does them a grave injustice, one that will result in far more harm than good. Fortunately, we have ample evidence and real-life examples that show the costs of quarantining healthy children far outweigh the benefits.

The OECD recently issued a report detailing the global harm the pandemic response is inflicting on children’s social and economic health and well-being, especially poor children. Its recommendation to combat these detrimental effects is to add more government interventions and mandates, particularly in social services, healthcare, and education.

But adding more layers of government involvement to fix the problems created by government lockdown policies puts expensive Band-Aids on injuries that could be alleviated by loosening the lockdowns.

What Can Parents Do?

So what can parents do? While they may not be able to lift government orders, parents can lift some of their self-imposed social distancing practices to help their children and teens avoid continued isolation and the damaging consequences that can arise from being disconnected from their peers.

Take the steps to connect your children with other children for play dates and social interactions, and encourage older children and teens to reach out to their friends to organize in-person get-togethers.

If schools aren’t open for in-person learning, consider creating a “pandemic pod” this fall for consistent group play and learning, and encourage teens to gather for small, in-person study groups and co-learning. Push back against the creeping government control of family life, and question the politicians and pundits who keep telling you, and especially your kids, to stay home.

Democrats’ Destroy-Trump Efforts Almost Comical

For the past 50 or more years, the Democrat Party––always leftwing but today both viciously anti-American and virulently anti-Semitic––has worked tirelessly to inflict its worldview on everyone in America.

By stealthily infiltrating our media, our schools (from pre-school to universities), and since Obama our Intelligence Services and Military, it has sought to convince our electorate that high taxes, open borders, sanctuary cities, shipping manufacturing jobs to foreign countries, post-birth infanticide, and total government control from cradle to grave are good––and that the U.S. Constitution, capitalism, high employment, law and order, indeed patriotism are bad.

No one has spelled out the devolution of the Democrat Party and the key players responsible for its demise more comprehensively than writer Shari Goodman––read her entire article here!

WORSE THAN COVID-19

Since the election of 2016, when business mogul Donald J. Trump outsmarted 20 Republican opponents, all career politicians, and trounced Hillary in the Electoral College to win the presidency, Democrats seem to have contracted a mutating virus a thousand times worse than Covid-19.

The anti-Trump symptoms are identical in all of those “tolerant” Regressives:

  • Shout down opposing views.
  • Spew insults and epithets.
  • Create falsehoods and pretend they’re true.
  • Support the domestic anarchists and terrorists of Black Lives Matter and Antifa and the vast destruction they’ve sown for the last four months.
  • Vow to vote for a seriously cognitively compromised candidate and a running mate who accused him of both racism and sexism.

Almost comical!

GETTING SERIOUS

Of course the real reason for this systemic derangement is that President Trump convincingly exposed the deep criminality of Big Government and the cozy arrangements that cost the American taxpayer billions of dollars each year:

  • The Obama-Biden regime’s weaponizing of the FBI, CIA, and the FISA Court, et al, resulting in ongoing investigations which could and should land the principals of those organizations in Gitmo.
  • The crooked money “arrangements” enjoyed by higher-ups like former VP Joe Biden in securing multimillion-and-billion-dollar windfalls for himself, his son Hunter and his brother James. Ukraine, anyone? China, anyone? There is this damning piece about the Biden Crime Family Inc.
  • But worse is Debra Heine’s article about the explosive new documentary, “Red Dragon: Uncovering the Bidens’ Chinese Secrets” that “tells the hidden story of the secret financial relationship between Joe Biden’s family and the Chinese government, exposing how the Bidens’ business dealings even served the strategic interests of the Chinese military while Joe Biden was VP of the United States.”
  • The horrible treaties, including the Iran deal, NAFTA, NATO, et al, that benefitted foreign countries significantly more than the U.S.
  • The interest of the “anti-war” Democrats in keeping wars going endlessly (always follow the money).
  • The degree to which lobbyists and the members of Congress they hire determine legislation that is good for their pocketbooks but not for We the People who they purport to represent.
  • The utter impoverishment of Democrat philosophy and policy.

AND THE WINNERS ARE!

Candidates Biden and Kalamity are telling the American public that it is they––and not President Trump––who will bring America to its best days yet. Yet they admit they will:

  • Raise taxes to unprecedented levels.
  • Reinstall the strangulating regulations that President Trump did away with in order to allow Free Enterprise to flourish.

And, according to Sundance, Joe Biden opposes:

  • Energy independence.
  • Stable energy development for our economy, which is the backbone of manufacturing revitalization.
  • Earth-mineral exploration and development.
  • And he “promises to reattach our economy to the Paris Climate Treaty which will forever restrict the growth of American industry.”

Given all these economy-killing policies, the delusional Biden-Kalamity ticket continues to assure us every day that we should trust them to invigorate the economy and boost employment.

Almost comical!

Cui Bono––Who Benefits Under Biden-Kalamity?

Certainly not the Black community which has enjoyed the highest employment in American history under President Trump!

Certainly not the Blacks who have been imprisoned with disproportionately harsh sentences, but thanks to President Trump’s “First Step” program have been freed to enjoy gainful employment and their cherished freedom. By the way, where was the Obama-Biden tag team for eight years in bringing such life-enhancing legislation about?

Certainly not the Hispanic community which has also enjoyed record employment under President Trump’s policies.

Certainly not women who have enjoyed record employment under President Trump’s policies.

Certainly not the youth of our country who have enjoyed record employment under President Trump’s policies.

PLAN X

Think about it. Since Donald Trump and his gorgeous wife Melania came down the escalator in Trump Tower in June of 2015, every leftist pundit, commentator, TV anchor, sophisticated scribe and Hollywood ditzoid predicted––with amazing confidence and self-important arrogance––that “Donald Trump will not be President of the United States.” Here is my favorite clip of those always-wrong know-nothings.

Today, about six weeks from the election, all those brilliant Democrats––you know, the ones with the fancy college degrees, the impressive credentials, the high IQs, the decades in government service at the highest levels––are the same leftists who:

  • Failed at the Russian hoax.
  • Failed at the Ukraine hoax.
  • Failed at the Impeachment hoax.

That’s a lot of failure. But it hasn’t stopped the Democrats from continuing to fail.

While President Trump is busy bringing about unprecedented breakthroughs in forging alliances between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Serbia and Kosovo, and now Israel and Bahrain––for which he has rightfully earned not one but two nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize––Democrats once again prove their idiocy by admitting that they loved when the arch-terrorist Yasir Arafat received the prize and when Barack Obama received it for….um…what???––but all of a sudden, they hate the Nobel Prize.

Almost comical!

PLAN Y

Now desperate, the Democrats trot out an article in the far-left Atlantic magazine that alleges that the president called American World War I veterans who died in France “suckers” and “losers.” This canard was an accusation not one person in America believes, given the president’s unequalled respect for and largesse to our military, including the massive build-up of the U.S. Military that the Obama-Biden regime eviscerated, emasculated, and tore down at every opportunity.

Where did this poison dart go? Another failure.

The next day, the same now-panicked leftists trotted out the “breaking,” “explosive,” and also go-nowhere revelation that Bob Woodward, the reporter for the fanatically anti-Trump Washington Post, revealed in his new book, Rage, that President Trump, gasp, didn’t want to panic the public and so played down the potentially dire information he was receiving about the China virus, Covid-19.

Imagine going to a doctor or bringing your child to a doctor, only to have that medical professional enter the room and tell you, “This is bad, very bad.” A sane person would call this doctor an alarmist and walk out of the room, outraged by his or her lack of empathy, lack of optimism, and failure to suggest a plan of action.

President Trump, on the other hand, demonstrated tremendous empathy for a scared public, the indomitable optimism that characterizes the American character, and an extensive plan of action that was implemented with seamless efficiency––all things that Doomsday Democrats hate!

Unfortunately for Woodward and his boss Jeff Bezos, this poison dart also failed because the American public that leftists hold in such contempt have eyes and ears and see for themselves what the president did to protect them, including immediately shutting down travel to the U.S. from China, and then from Europe, and then employing his vast executive experience in obtaining more personal-protective equipment and medically-outfitted ships and masks and respirators and testing than any country on earth––and in typically Trump record-breaking time.

PLAN Z

No doubt, these frantic, Democrats will keep up the anti-Trump drumbeat until Election Day on November 3rd––fabricating explosive headlines, leveling damning accusations, and working overtime to rig the election.

But this effort will earn them a Z for zero success. That is because I suspect that most Democrats are not that dumb, that when they get into the voting booth and draw the curtain, and even when they fill out the mail-in voter forms, they will pull the lever or check the box for the man who promises––and has already delivered––peace and prosperity.

How the NBA Can Recover From Declining Ratings: Refuse to Promote BLM Propaganda

The National Basketball Association (2.71) and other professional sports organizations like the National Football League (2.00) have forgotten their main duty is to provide fans with entertainment – not cater to radical left-wing groups like Black Lives Matter (2.01). BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors openly admitted the organization is led by “trained Marxists,” and the group’s official website even calls for abolishing the “Western-prescribed nuclear family structure.” The NBA is only alienating their audience when they support this anti-American agenda by prominently featuring players kneeling for the National Anthem and wearing politically-themed jerseys. Fans can’t even expect to relax and watch a scheduled playoff game anymore without the NBA postponing it to show support for social justice initiatives.

The NBA needs to return to devoting airtime to the sport people watch them for, as fans are beginning to notice how the NBA is putting political activism before their audience.

The basketball league is suffering from declining ratings and they’re going to have to try hard to win people back. Since the NBA season restarted, ratings are down 40 percent on the TNT network, 20 percent on ESPN, and 45 percent on ABC. A recent Harris poll found the NBA becoming “too political” is responsible for the drop in ratings. Only 28% of poll respondents said they were choosing not to watch because the games were “Boring without the fans,” and 19% said it was because of the NBA’s ties to China. A stunning 38% of fans admitted the NBA’s focus on politics instead of basketball was their main reason for not watching games as much.

Conservatives and people who aren’t that invested in politics are not watching the NBA to see their groveling endorsement of BLM. The NBA’s loss of viewership should encourage them to listen to the majority of their fans who do not want to see disunifying messages. 2ndVote consumers can make their voices heard by refusing to watch the league and by emailing the NBA directly. Let them know how what you think about mixing politics with sports. Hopefully, this will remind the NBA their job is not to act as a one-sided political platform, but to provide neutral, quality entertainment.

You Must Read ‘Insurrection and Violence’ a Citizens Guide

If you do nothing else today, this is the ‘must read’ you have been waiting for.

(And, includes some of the things I have been saying in my ‘Rioting Leftists‘ series.)

The 58-page guide authored by Rich Higgins and Stephen Coughlin and published by Unconstrained Analytics is a handbook for your survival and for the Nation’s survival in the chaotic months (years?) ahead. (Hat tip: Leo)

From the Introduction:

(emphasis is mine)

The United States of America is enveloped in crisis. Not since the Civil War, have we faced an insurgency and resistance movement with the capacity, capability, and very real potential to fundamentally change the structure of our republic. All, without passing a law. We are near a tipping point of insurrection and unlegislated change, from which the nation thus changed, will cease to be recognized or function as a representative republic.

The purpose for writing is to alert you to this fact – we are under attack by an ‘insurgency syndicate’ employing unconventional warfare tactics. The North American Insurgency Syndicate (NAIS) is currently gaining strength and they are on the offensive. This book endeavors to deliver an understanding of the insurgency, their goals, strategy and tactics. Then, to provide a framework to respond and protect your family, your property, your freedom, and our country.

As you read about violent insurgent groups, and their goal to fundamentally change our form of government, many a reader may be asking themselves “But, what can I do?” A rational response to this question is the motivation for our project. We offer a guide to assess your current position, analyze your risk, and help you make a reasoned plan to protect you, your family, and further; to provide you ways in which you can help the Nation.

For, if well-meaning citizens do nothing – do not recognize the danger, do not vote, do not volunteer at polling locations, do not influence others, do not prepare for their own defense, and do not push back against enemies of the Republic, then they are ceding space and power to the insurgents. The consequence of citizen inaction, at this perilous moment, is to put at risk the Constitution, our way of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If law-abiding patriots across the country do not take prudent action, if they remain subdued and silent, then our nation will be fundamentally altered and cease to function as a republic.

We begin by increasing your “situational awareness.” The book describes the current situation in the United States – that we are at a critical point where the NAIS is successfully exploiting a national emergency to rapidly gain strength. We provide a synopsis of the various and disparate insurgent organizations and movements that are involved in direct-action violence, harassment, agitation, and social media attacks.

Then we explore their syndicate structure. At the tactical level, the NAIS relies upon self-organizing groups of insurgents united for insurrection. The syndicate, waging unconventional warfare with new and innovative tactics, intends to change or overthrow the government.

Here is a snip from Chapter 1 Insurrection and Violence: A Citizens Guide (.pdf) hammering the point that we are at war:

The United States of America is enveloped in crisis. Not since the Civil War, have we faced an insurgency and resistance movement with the capacity, capability, and very real potential to fundamentally change the structure of our republic. All, without passing a law. We are near a tipping point of insurrection and unlegislated change, from which the nation thus changed, will cease to be recognized or function as a representative republic.

The purpose for writing is to alert you to this fact – we are under attack by  an ‘insurgency syndicate’ employing unconventional warfare tactics.

Keep reading because this is not your usual wonky analytical look at what we are facing (although there is thorough analysis), but includes chapters on what you can do to prepare and to fight back!

I was especially interested in Chapter 3 on preparation since that is what I have been yakking about for the last two months (and working on myself!).

Insurrection and Violence: A Citizens Guide (PDF)

Read it (maybe make a donation to Unconstrained Analytics) and then get to work!

EndNote and changing the subject:  If you are not a regular reader of Refugee Resettlement Watch, you might want to visit and see what is happening as this is the big month in which the President usually makes a determination about how many refugees we might admit in the coming fiscal year that begins on October 1.

Trump: ‘Another HISTORIC breakthrough today! Our two GREAT friends Israel and Bahrain agree to a Peace Deal’

VIDEO: President Donald J. Trump announces Bahrain, Israel will normalize relations.

“Another HISTORIC breakthrough today! Our two GREAT friends Israel and the Kingdom of Bahrain agree to a Peace Deal – the second Arab country to make peace with Israel in 30 days!”

This is extraordinary. Trump is achieving it by refusing to heed the conventional wisdom that has guided U.S. foreign policy into disaster after disaster for decades. I rated him very high in Rating America’s Presidents, and he keeps on vindicating me. But his defiance of the mainstream analysts and demonstration of their failures is one reason why they hate him with such passionate intensity.

“Bahrain agrees to normalize relations with Israel, Trump announces,” Jerusalem Post, September 11, 2020:

Bahrain has joined the United Arab Emirates in striking an agreement to normalize relations with Israel, President Donald Trump said on Friday, a dramatic move aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East.

Trump tweeted out the news after he spoke by phone to both Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House said.

Trump also tweeted: “Another HISTORIC breakthrough today! Our two GREAT friends Israel and the Kingdom of Bahrain agree to a Peace Deal – the second Arab country to make peace with Israel in 30 days!”

“This is a historic breakthrough to further peace in the Middle East,” the United States, Bahrain and Israel said in a joint statement.

“Opening direct dialog and ties between these two dynamic societies and advanced economies will continue the positive transformation of the Middle East and increase stability, security, and prosperity in the region,” it said.

Netanyahu says the agreement marks a “new era of peace.”…

VIDEO: ‘America Will Always Rise Up, Stand Tall, And Fight Back’ — Trump Pays Tribute To Flight 93 Heroes At 9/11 Memorial

9/11 Anniversary: President Trump attends memorial ceremony in Shanksville, Pa.

President Donald Trump commemorated the 19th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks by delivering remarks at the United Flight 93 memorial site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Passengers onboard the flight heroically rushed the cockpit and overpowered hijackers on September 11, 2001, forcing the plane to crash in a field in Pennsylvania. The plane was the only hijacked flight not to hit its intended target on 9/11. The president spoke shortly after the names of the 40 individuals on the flight were read aloud, with moments of silence and bells ringing following each name.

“The heroes of Flight 93 are an everlasting reminder that no matter the danger, no matter the threat, no matter the odds, America will always rise up, stand tall and fight back,” Trump stated. “The men and women of flight 93 were mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, husbands and wives. Nothing could have prepared them for the dreadful events of that morning. But when the moment came, when history called, they did not hesitate, they did not waiver.”

“Our sacred task, our righteous duty, and our solemn pledge is to carry forward the noble legacy of the brave souls who gave their lives for us 19 years ago,” he closed. “In their memory, we resolve to stand united as one American nation, to defend our freedoms, to uphold our values, to love our neighbors, to cherish our country, to care for our communities, to honor our heroes, and to never, ever forget.”

WATCH:

The president will follow his remarks with a Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House on Friday afternoon. The recipient, Army Ranger Sgt. Maj. Thomas Payne, is the first person who took part in the United States’ campaign against ISIS, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the first living member of Delta Force to receive the Medal of Honor.

Former Vice President Joe Biden is also scheduled to visit the memorial site later in the day Friday. He spent the morning at 9/11 memorial services in New York City, also attended by Vice President Mike Pence and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

EXCLUSIVE: Republican Senators Say Riots Will Help Trump Win The Election

Republican Senators said they believe the riots and looting across the country will steer Democrats away from 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and towards President Donald Trump.

The Daily Caller spoke with a number of GOP Senators about the ongoing riots across the country and asked them how they believed it would play out politically for Trump and Biden. Every Senator contacted said they believe the riots will steer Democrats away from Biden and help Trump win in November.

“The American people have not failed to notice that for months, elected Democrats all across the country have turned a blind eye to violence in their cities,” Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz told the Daily Caller. “If this is an election based on ideas – on the contrast between the rule of law and the Constitution, or riots and anarchy and violence in the streets, Republicans win – which is why Democrats are doing everything they can to make this to be a battle of personalities.”

Georgia Republican Sen. David Perdue mentioned how peaceful protests have turned into violent riots and also said under Democratic control, cities will continue to see more violence and rioting. Perdue, who is up for reelection in November also slammed his Democratic opponent Jon Ossoff, saying he has considered calling for defunding of the police.

“In recent months, we’ve seen outside agitators hijack well-intentioned, peaceful protests and turn them into dangerous riots. This violent anarchy is absolutely unacceptable, but it hasn’t stopped Democrats from vowing to defund the police at a time when we need them most. My opponent Jon Ossoff said that police funding has to be ‘on the line.’ If you want to see what America would be like under Joe Biden, look at major Democrat-run cities like Chicago, Minneapolis, and Portland. This November, defunding the police will be on the ballot. Democrats have proven that they value their radical socialist agenda over real solutions. The choice for voters couldn’t be more clear,” Perdue said to the Daily Caller.

Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton told the Daily Caller that the rioters are Biden’s supporters and said that Trump is the only candidate who can stop them.

“Rioters are wreaking havoc on cities across the country and putting people’s lives in danger. President Trump is the only candidate willing to address these riots and take action to stop them. Joe Biden can’t take a strong line because these rioters are his supporters,” Cotton said.

Meanwhile, riots have continued across the country, something Georgia Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler told the Daily Caller should be put to an end.

“For months, Democrats have turned a blind eye to the violent mobs destroying our cities – allowing our businesses to burn, our statues to topple, and our families to fear for their lives in the name of social justice. Their brand of anarchy has no place in this country – which is why I’ve been leading in the Senate to defund cities that defund the police, increase criminal penalties for rioters and looters, and – above all – support our law enforcement officers at every turn,” Loeffler said.

“Fighting for safety and security puts President Trump squarely on the right side of history – and I’m proud to partner with him to restore law and order in our country,” Loeffler continued.

Montana Republican Sen. Steve Daines, who is also up for re-election this year against Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock, told the Daily Caller that both Biden and Bullock would bring socialism to America.

“The liberal mob is destroying our history, burning our flags, and turning America into a socialist country. Voters across Montana and this nation have a very clear choice this November, a choice between socialism and freedom. Joe Biden and Steve Bullock’s America will be a socialist country,” Daines said.

The office of Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott said Americans will not accept the ongoing violence and rioting in the streets, also mentioning the defund the police movement.

“The American people want to be safe, and Senator Scott is glad President Trump is focused on protecting American families and law enforcement. Unfortunately, some Democrat governors and mayors aren’t doing their jobs and are allowing violence and destruction to fill their streets. The American people aren’t going to accept that or efforts by the radical left to de-fund the police,” Scott’s office said in a statement to the Daily Caller.

In just Kenosha, Wisconsin alone, there was nearly $2 million of damage in the city-owned property, the Associated Press reported in early September. Throughout the country violence and destruction has continued on the streets for months.

“Law and order is a prerequisite for justice, peace, and prosperity. Violent riots undermine all of these, and Americans are seeing this in action every day. I doubt they’ll forget that before November,” Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy told the Daily Caller.

Tennesse Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn heavily criticized Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris, saying the radical left has taken over their party.

“The radical left has overtaken the Democratic Party. Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and the radical liberals pulling the strings will defund the police and have anarchy and chaos in the streets. The American people trust Donald Trump to back the blue and stand with our law enforcement officers because that’s exactly what he has done, and that’s of critical importance as we head into November,” Blackburn said to the Daily Caller.

Current polling has Biden around with a lead of 51%-44% over Trump, according to Fox News.

VIDEO: The mysterious power of an international transgender declaration that no one has ever heard of

Why are the Yogyakarta Principles so influential?

Russian feminist Anna Zobnina’s excellent summary of the Yogyakarta Principles at a recent seminar.

The reasons for the rapid conquest by transgender activists of the media, universities, government departments and woke corporations are mysterious. Is it cultural? Psychological? Philosophical? Legal?

Without being a complete explanation, one reason is widespread acceptance of the Yogyakarta Principles. Amnesty USA describes them as “a universal guide to applying international human rights law” to LGBT issues. A leading German NGO, the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, describes them as “a groundbreaking document, extensively used since by human rights mechanisms and advocates” and Human Rights Watch has praised them as “a milestone for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender rights”.

America’s leading LGBT think tank, the Williams Institute at UCLA, says that “the Yogyakarta Principles are the primary document defining the application of international human rights law with respect to sexual orientation and gender identity.”

But despite scholarly journals often quoting these principles they are not recognised in international human rights law.

The Yogyakarta Principles, promulgated in 2006, addressed lesbian, gay and bisexual rights. In 2017, more principles to accommodate transgender rights were added. These are called the Yogyakarta Principles + 10.

You may have never heard of either document. But trans activists have turned them into powerful propaganda tools for transforming transgender rights into human rights. As an example, a recent submission by Amnesty Australia to a federal government inquiry into religious freedom quotes the Yogyakarta Principles over and over again.

The trouble is, they are not worth the paper they are written on.

The back story

The genesis of the Yogyakarta Principles is a horror story involving several key people, legal strategies and well-organised public relations events around the world, all designed to replace the term “sex” with “gender”.

The site of the first meeting in November 2006, Yogyakarta in Indonesia, was chosen because it was “south of the equator, in a Muslim majority country and in a jurisdiction ruled by a Sultan”. The co-chairs of the meeting were from Thailand and Brazil and representation was carefully selected from outside the West and Latin America, including individuals from Botswana, China, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nepal, Pakistan, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey. The participants came from only 25 countries.

The original document became the Yogyakarta Principles Plus 10 in 2017. Its new principles included gender expression, sex characteristics, sexual orientation and “gender identity”.

The 2017 document was signed by only 33 people.

Legally inconsequential

What is their legal status? They have none at all. They are just a Christmas shopping list for the transgender lobby.

The Principles have never been accepted by the United Nations. Attempts to make gender identity and sexual orientation new categories of non-discrimination have been repeatedly rejected by the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council and other UN bodies. In fact, a majority of members of the General Assembly opposed any reference to the Yogyakarta Principles as they are seen as being contradictory to the position of the UN Human Rights Council.

Despite its reputation in Australia, the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee has acknowledged that the Yogyakarta Principles have no statutory power in Australia. They have no binding effect in international human rights law either.

Compare this to the legal support that the international community has given to women. The Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) was adopted by the United Nations in 1979 and has been ratified by 189 states (the US being one notable exception).

Australia became a signatory of CEDAW in 1980, but the convention was further empowered by our federal legislature when it was incorporated in its entirety into the Commonwealth legislation enacted to protect and further the rights of women, the Sex Discrimination Act of 1984.

Feminists betrayed

Do feminists support the Yogyakarta Principles? No.

In fact, an international feminist group, the Women’s Human Rights Campaign (WHRC), which includes many well-known academics and feminist activists, is fiercely opposed to them. In their view, the principles are misogynistic and attempt “to make sex a defunct legal category.” The Yogyakarta Principles document is designed to replace “sex”, which is a scientific, biological fact, with “gender identity”, which is a socially constructed fiction, based largely on postmodernist rhetoric and identity politics.

They claim that the popularity of the document is a sign that “we are moving towards a society where sex does not exist”, especially for women and girls. They fear that acceptance of the Yogyakarta Principles will destroy the enormous gains made in past decades by the feminist movement.

Nor has the Yogyakarta Principles project had much popular support. It is largely coordinated by Allied Rainbow Communities, or ARC International (ARC), an NGO based in Canada. In her analysis of the Yogyakarta Principles, feminist Anna Zobnina notes that ARC is basically a lobby group, not an internationally representative organisation.

The WHRC Declaration on Women’s Sex-Based Rights has been signed, as at September 9, by 11,772 individuals and 256 organisations from 119 countries. All supporters of the WHRC are listed on its Declaration page. It is quite transparent.

The ARC website is not transparent. Its latest accounts date from 2016, when it received $407,000 from “membership and donations” in 2016. It also received $275,000 from “foundations” and $71,000 from the Norwegian Foreign Ministry.

The WHRC Facebook page has about 4,000 likes; the ARC page has about 2,500. The WHRC has representatives across at least 25 countries and was established only 18 months ago. The ARC was established 17 years ago.

What’s wrong with the Yogyakarta Principles?

In the Yogyakarta Principles “gender identity” is defined as:

Understanding “gender identity” to refer to each person’s deeply felt internal and individual experience of gender, which may or may not correspond with the sex assigned at birth, including the personal sense of the body (which may involve, if freely chosen, modification of bodily appearance or function by medical, surgical or other means) and other expressions of gender. Including dress, speech and mannerisms.

As noted by American human rights lawyer Tina Minkowitz, “gender itself is not defined, but is situated in relation to “sex assigned at birth”, with which a person’s internal experience of gender may or may not correspond” and the reference to “sex” is only to indicate that it does not refer to personality traits. “Sex” is not defined either.

Alarmingly, for everyone, “YP implicitly accepts a concept of gender as equivalent to stereotypes. When beliefs about mannerisms, dress and speech appropriate to one sex or the other are abstracted and made to serve as a ground for personal identity, they are shielded from challenge.”

This unravels decades of progress for feminists. The notion that an innate feeling can lead to a change in an individual’s sex status at birth, with the corresponding legal entitlements and access to spaces and places reserved for girls and women (including their sports), is a violation of the protections established over decades for women, beginning with CEDAW.

As Minkowitz further notes, “It is not gender identity that is being protected, but the substitution of internal identity for recorded sex, upon the request of any person”. The legitimisation of this process is simply creating new forms of discrimination against girls and women and is in conflict with CEDAW.

This is not to say that transgender people should not be protected, but replacing “sex” with “gender identity” not only erases sex as a category and girls and women as a class distinct from that of boys and men, but also erases girls’ and women’s human rights.

A significant, currently relevant, example of the consequences of these changes is given by Minkowitz. She states that women have “little reason to expect their rights will be protected, in (a) law and policy environment that treats their discussion of sex and gender as tantamount to hate speech”.

On the matter of “sex” and “gender”, the CEDAW Committee’s General Recommendation 28 emphasizes that changing one’s gender does not change an individual’s social positioning. Gender identity advocates are naïve to think this is possible; the ideological nature of their claims renders them as fictional as the postmodernist thinking upon which they are based.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are six fundamental criticisms of the Yogyakarta Principles and its “Plus 10” extensions:

  1. They were constructed by a few unelected, unrepresentative civil groups and individuals;
  2. They have never been adopted by the United Nations;
  3. They have no legal force either internationally or within Australia and were rejected by the Commonwealth legislature and the United Nations;
  4. The Yogyakarta Principles +10 principles were signed by just 33 people;
  5. They are often quoted misleadingly by members of parliament and trans lobby groups as though they had been adopted by UN resolution; and
  6. Their full implementation would effectively make “sex” a defunct legal category, replacing it by the ambiguous category of “gender”.

VIDEO: How Americans should weigh the recent surge in anti-Semitism when they cast their votes this November

In this clip from the Q&A of the Center for Security Policy’s recent webinar “Rise of Anti-Semitism and the Progressive Assault on the West,” David Wurmser, Director of the Center’s Program on Global Anti-Semitism and the US-Israel Relationship, Juliana Pilon, Senior Fellow of the Alexander Hamilton Institute for the Study of Western Civilization, and Joel Griffith, Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation Roe Institute, discuss why it is important that American voters hold members of Congress accountable in standing up to a recent surge in anti-Semitism in the United States.

This includes not “coddling” those promoting anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism and not tolerating openly anti-Semitic members of Congress such as Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.

‘OPEN THE SCHOOLS’: President Trump Calls For Defunding Schools That Remain Shuttered

President Donald Trump demanded that Democrats assist him in re-opening public schools on Thursday, saying schools that remain closed should lose government funding.

Trump has pressed for reopening schools for weeks, making several threats to limit or cut funding altogether if children continue to be forced into distance learning. The main opposition to reopening comes from teachers unions, which consistently align with the Democrats.

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1304055016731422722?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1304055016731422722%7Ctwgr%5Eshare_3&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2020%2F09%2F10%2Ftrump-schools-reopen-democrats-funding%2F

Trump first began his push to reopen schools in July, arguing that his Democratic opponents were halting the reopening process for political reasons.

“We have to open our schools. Open our schools. Stop this nonsense,” Trump said Thursday. “It’s only political nonsense. They don’t want to open because they think it will help them on November 3rd. I think it will hurt them on November 3rd.”

Governors across the country ordered schools to close for the final months of the 2019-2020 school year, but states and districts disagree on when classrooms should reopen. The Trump administration released a set of eight recommendations in August for how schools can safely reopen.

The White House recommendations are as follows:

  • Educate teachers and students about the symptoms of COVID-19
  • Require students and teachers to “self-assess” their health each morning
  • Encourage frequent hand washing
  • Minimize large, indoor gatherings
  • Maintain high levels of ventilation in classrooms
  • Require students and teachers to socially distance from “high-risk individuals”
  • Encourage the use of masks
  • Post instructions for hygiene and social distancing around the school

Trump maintains that distanced learning is not an adequate replacement for schooling.

“When you sit at home in a basement looking at a computer, your brain starts to wither away,” Trump said when announcing the recommendations. “We have a lot of good experience at that just by taking a look at what’s happening in politics.”

Trump’s comments echoed those of the American Academy of Pediatrics, which came forward last month to urge state governments to reopen schools in the fall, saying risk of COVID-19 spread among students is low. The group also said dangers of keeping students home and away from learning outweighs the potential risk of spread.

“Lengthy time away from school and associated interruption of supportive services often results in social isolation, making it difficult for schools to identify and address important learning deficits as well as child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance use, depression, and suicidal ideation,” the group said according to U.S. News.

POLL: 86% Of Americans Think The Media Is Biased

The vast majority of Americans think that there is political bias in news coverage, a new Gallup/Knight Foundation poll found.

86% of Americans said that the media is biased, with 49% of respondents saying that there is “a great deal” of political bias in news coverage and 37% saying there is “a fair amount” of bias, according to the poll.

People are more concerned with other people’s news sources than they are with their own; when given a choice, 69% of Americans were concerned about bias in the news that other people were viewing, while 29% were concerned about the bias in their own news sources. 56% of respondents agreed that there was political bias in the news source that they relied on the most, the poll found.

The poll found that Americans are divided along party lines when it comes to trusting the media. Republicans distrust the media more than Democrats – 71% of Republicans reported viewing the media “very” or “somewhat” unfavorably, while 22% of Democrats and 52% of independents said the same.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized “fake news” and media bias, and Democrats and Republicans differ in their views of such attacks. They agree that the media is under attack, but 70% of Democrats who agree that the media is being attacked say that it is not warranted, while 61% of Republicans who think the media is under attack say that it is justified.

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1304033005191692288?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1304033005191692288%7Ctwgr%5Eshare_3&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2020%2F09%2F10%2Fpoll-americans-think-media-biased-fake-news%2F

The poll also found that Americans viewed political bias in news as a “major problem” and that they perceive inaccuracies in news as purposeful and intended to push a specific agenda.

73% of respondents said that bias is a “major problem,” compared to 65% who said it was a major problem in 2017. A majority of Americans – 54% – said that inaccuracies were intentional because reporters were misrepresenting facts, and 28% believed reporters made up facts entirely, the poll found.

When asked about news organizations that they distrust, 89% of Americans said that those organizations are trying to push a certain agenda. Only 12% said that the organizations they distrust were failing to report the facts accurately despite an honest attempt to do so.

The spread of misinformation online was the issue that most people – 78% – agreed was a “major problem.” 73% of respondents wanted to see internet companies do something to curb the spread of misinformation online.

How Bad Are Things?

David Warren: You bottle up young people, and then an ideologue lights a match. They become “Molotov people,” filled with nothing except natural fuel.

Some have argued, this could turn out well. From my information, homeschooling has grown explosively across the U.S.A., and this doesn’t seem to be receding much, as the Batflu lockdowns ease.

Whether Catholic or not, parents across the continent have been learning what the public education system provides: little besides “progressive” indoctrination. As I discovered when my own children were young (in Canada), they learn everything needful at home, anyway.

A nice example was my elder lad – an engineer by nature – who was still using feet and inches a quarter-century after the government had imposed the metric system. This was done well before he was born, under the late, unlamented, elder Trudeau’s regime.

How wasn’t he metricated?

He explained that while the schools only taught in metric, his teacher was innumerate. My son had acquired the old (British Imperial) measures from his mother and father. Eventually, he taught himself metric conversions from a book, but he still thought in feet and inches.

Yes, I hear gentle reader telling me, this is just anecdotal. And I could supply many anecdotes besides. But it helps explain why, when light is cast on our state schools, they tend to evaporate. We’re often told they have good teachers. I’ll tell you when I meet one.

Better yet, the universities follow. There are thousands of these degree-granting institutions, and perhaps a few good professors, still not retired. But they will be gone in a very few years, and from what I can make out, especially in the humanities, their successors teach nothing but attitudinizing.

There is still fine training to be had from several places in the technical disciplines, which draw big salaries. But President Trump’s boasts notwithstanding, the country is actually dependent upon foreign students and immigrants, to staff the more sophisticated industries.

Whether or not they are allowed to confer credentials, good training colleges may survive. They may also grow, into the vacuum, as bad ones disintegrate. The students themselves are discovering that the innumerable soft degrees they offer give them nothing but a mountain of debt. Bankrupting mediocre universities will be a boon to society.

I mustn’t be too negative against virus infections that escape from (largely American-funded) Red Chinese labs. They may do spectacular damage; though mostly it is from the ambitious response of exploitative politicians – trading, according to me, on an electorate that is superstitious; that is easily frightened and gulled.

We see it in the cloth muzzles almost everyone is wearing in the cities, quite voluntarily. No one demands proof that they are even slightly effective. Or we see it in the hysteria about “infection spikes,” as often as not caused by false positives on tests, while the death rates continue to fall.

And in the death rates themselves, which are wildly inflated. For these deaths are overwhelmingly among the old and already dying. That the cause of death is “COVID-19” is not sometimes, but usually, a surmise.

I could waste gentle reader’s time with an exhaustive analysis of the flaky statistics, but this is already being done. Unfortunately, the media’s money seems to come only from false alarms.

The two aspects of our educational apocalypse now come together. We live in environments where the majority is no longer intellectually, or morally, cultivated. They panic easily when something bad happens, inspiring further idiotization. And something bad is always happening.

In particular we, like all previous societies, should be able to cope with pain, inconvenience, and death. There will always be natural disasters, even if the plurality are man-made.

Which takes us to the third aspect. The season of riots – of looting, arson, and mayhem in the cities – may be the product of the lockdown, like so many other apparently evil things. You bottle young people up, and then some ideologue puts a match to them. I call them “the Molotov people,” for they are filled with nothing except natural fuel.

Even many from reasonably good families had parents who left teaching them to the schools. They foolishly believed their kids were too smart to fall for radical nonsense. They hadn’t taken warnings from previous generations.

In your country, as in mine, there was a direct connection between the deracination of shopping, schools, and entertainment, and a hunger for violence. The inherited wisdom of religion and nation was simply not available to the vast majority, not only of the “Millennial Generation,” but often to those who raised them.

Not having tasted normative civilization, they don’t know what they’re missing, as it were. They have learned to think in fantasies, instead. They aren’t anchored to anything; certainly not to the “socialism” many profess. Were it not that Christ can do miracles, I’d have no hope for them.

But here is where my pessimism comes flooding back in.

Yes, it would be good to extinguish our atrociously counter-productive school system. Yet it is hard to imagine much good coming, just from destroying a few more things. True, we learn from experience, and experiencing some reality is better than experiencing none.

But I am reminded of an old joke, told by Poles against themselves, just after the Soviet tyranny collapsed. It went, “How many Poles does it take to change a light bulb?”

The answer was, “None. The free market will take care of it.”

The same mindless notion that socialism might work, carried forward into capitalism. Good things don’t happen because a constitutional order is well designed. They happen because real, heroic people make them happen; because living souls tirelessly created them.

While stupid obstructions can get in the way, they don’t matter when there is nothing pushing. The old-fashioned liberals, who wanted to remove obstacles, may have been sweet and well-intended, but they didn’t BUILD.

It is as we rebuild the fabric of civilization, that we recover from civilizational collapse. There is no alternative to re-establishing Christianity and Catholicism. None.

The Dangers of “Sexxx Ed”

Because of the virus, there is a current debate between opening up the schools or only using online instruction. Online instruction allows parents to hear what is being taught to their children. But that has some liberals up at arms because they want to teach a more radical curriculum than most parents would wish.

Perhaps the largest bone of contention in this respect is in the realm of sex education, which in our day has become more radicalized.

Christian attorney Brad Dacus, the president of Pacific Justice Institute, even calls today’s curriculum “Sexxx ed.”

Dacus told D. James Kennedy Ministries: “With the new sex-ed curriculum revolution taking place in public schools, it is a literal spiritual genocide….It is so twisted with a radical LGBTQ taught to young children all the way down to kindergarten, convincing them that they can change their gender—be a boy on the inside, girl on the outside.”

The Family Research Council (FRC) has recently released a booklet laying out the shocking facts about all this. It is entitled “Sex Education in Public Schools: Sexualization of Children and LGBT Indoctrination.” The author is Cathy Ruse, a Senior Fellow at FRC and Georgetown Law grad.

Ruse notes, “Most of us remember what sex education was like when we were in school. A couple of uncomfortable hours….Things are very different today.”

  • Children are taught they could be born “in the wrong body.”
  • Teens are shown videos of techniques to pleasure their sex partners.
  • Students are told how to have abortions without telling their parents.
  • Schools in Indiana send teens out to shop for condoms.

And on it goes.

Tony Perkins, the president of FRC, told me in an interview: “When most parents hear about sex education, they immediately think back to their gym teacher giving them some of the basic facts of human biology. But that’s not what is being taught today in our schools.”

He noted that for the most part much of today’s teaching is “a tutorial on sexual activity.” He also said, “It has expanded to where in some cases it is 70 hours of instruction.”

Planned Parenthood is now the nation’s largest sex educator in our public schools. And they profit off of the abortions they provide to sexually active teenagers. This reminds me of the old phrase, “Follow the money.”

In an interview on Christian television, Cathy Ruse told me, “There is a story out of a rural Virginia county where parents learned that their 9th grade daughters had been shown a Planned Parenthood sex ed video…focusing on certain sexual organs of their partners, and the video promoted the use of sex toys.”

As noted earlier, response to the coronavirus has shut down many schools, which now provide only virtual classes. And some educators do not welcome parental involvement.

Last week, the DailyWire.com (8/20/20) noted that parents have to sign a waiver “agreeing not to monitor virtual instruction.” Why? Does the school have something to hide? This particular story was out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee—not some liberal metropolis.

On 8/10/20, washingtonexaminer.com wrote of a Philadelphia teacher who fretted that “conservative parents” who listen in on their children’s instructions might interfere with teachers who are involved “in the messy work of destabilizing a kid’s racism or homophobia or transphobia.” The teacher assumes that teachers know what’s best for the children, not the parents. Who is responsible for the children? The parents or the teachers?

The Bible tells us that the parents are responsible for rearing their children. And God will hold parents accountable for the type of education they provide for their children. This is why school choice is such a hotly debated topic today.

One byproduct of the COVID-19 pandemic is that some parents learned that they actually could homeschool their children. Homeschooling has a long and rich tradition in American history. Some of our founding fathers and great leaders were homeschooled for at least part of their education. This includes George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and Abraham Lincoln. Homeschooled children today often succeed well beyond their public school counterparts.

Parents are responsible for their children, even if they delegate the teaching to the school. Our TV ministry once covered a story about a young girl in a California high school who had an abortion apart from her parents’ permission or knowledge. When she developed an infection (because of the abortion) that caused her to be paralyzed, it was the parents, not the school, who had to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. Schools should work with parents, not against them.

If the schools are teaching dangerous things, including falsehoods about sex—and purposely excluding the parents from knowing what’s going on—parents might want to consider other educational options for their children.
