Group Stoking Anti-ICE LA Riots Tied To Pro-Chinese Communist Millionaire

A socialist group that promoted the chaotic anti-deportation protests in Los Angeles that began Friday is tied to a network of groups bankrolled by a pro-China millionaire.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) spoke out in support of the mob rioting against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over the weekend, posted to X to call for more action on Sunday and created signs that protesters were seen carrying. The PSL shares personnel overlap with groups funded by American tech mogul Neville Singham, whom The New York Times described in August 2023 as sitting at the center of a “lavishly funded influence campaign” promoting pro-Chinese Communist Party (CCP) propaganda.

“The people of Los Angeles and surrounding areas have taken a courageous stand against [President Donald] Trump’s reign of terror targeting immigrant families,” the PSL said in a Sunday statement. “In response, the administration has falsely labeled those taking to the streets in protest of the brutal war on immigrants as ‘rioters’ and called in thousands of National Guard soldiers for a crackdown.”

Trump mobilized the National Guard on Saturday to quell the riots, which have included crowds blocking traffic, vandalizing property with anti-ICE messages, starting fires and throwing objects at law enforcement in support of illegal migrants. At least 56 people were arrested over the weekend, NBC News reported.

“National Guard go away! ICE out of LA!” reads a Sunday X post from the PSL at 12:45 a.m. that called for “mass mobilization.” The group later posted videos of protesters gathering in the streets with supportive captions, omitting scenes of unrest that reportedly led to more arrests on Sunday. The PSL did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Singham, the pro-China businessman, has donated tens of millions of dollars to the PSL-linked group People’s Forum through various shell organizations since 2017, the New York Post reported. The People’s Forum was founded by Claudia De La Cruz, who ran as the PSL’s candidate for president in 2024 and was a “central committee member” of PSL.

The PSL is not required to disclose its funding publicly. De La Cruz described the organization as “member-funded” in October 2024.

PSL founding member Ben Becker, along with former PSL candidates Karla Reyes and Yari Osorio, have held leading roles at Breakthrough BT Media Inc, a Singham-funded media organization pushing pro-CCP narratives, according to the Network Contagion Research Institute. Breakthrough BT Media Inc’s 2023 tax filings show Becker as editor-in-chief, Reyes as chair, Osorio as treasurer and De La Cruz as secretary.

The DCNF could not reach Singham directly for comment. Thoughtworks, a software company he founded, did not respond to an inquiry.

The People’s Forum did not respond to a request for comment. The group referred to Singham in 2021 as “a Marxist comrade who sold his company & donated most of his wealth to nonprofits that focus on political education, culture & internationalism.”

“I categorically deny and repudiate any suggestion that I am a member of, work for, take orders from, or follow instructions of any political party or government or their representatives,” Singham told the New York Times in August 2023.

The PSL has praised the late murderous dictator Mao Zedong for his communist revolution that established the modern Chinese communist regime. The group also denied the 1989 massacre of pro-democracy protesters by CCP troops at Tiananmen Square, as the Chinese government does.

The group’s social media posts, however, claimed L.A. protesters were resisting “repression” from the Trump administration.

The PSL’s anti-Israel stances and open support for Hamas terrorism came under scrutiny when former PSL member Elias Rodriguez was charged with killing two Israeli Embassy workers in May to make a statement for Palestinians. The PSL deleted an article featuring Rodriguez and said it had “nothing to do” with him after the murders.

Georgia Bill Sparks MAHA Concerns About Alleged Chinese Poison Chemicals

MAHA advocates are warning about a bill Georgia lawmakers passed in March that they allege would allow manufacturers of pesticides to escape liability for poisoning customers.

Senate Bill 144 would make it so “that a manufacturer cannot be held liable for failing to warn consumers of health risks above those required by the United States Environmental Protection Agency with respect to pesticides.”

Environmentalists and regenerative farming advocates warn that the bill would be detrimental to public health.

“Stripping our right to be able to sue if we have a different opinion than what the EPA has is really going to be catastrophic for public health, because then we have no recourse whatsoever,” Kelly Ryerson, the founder of American Regenerative and Glyphosate Facts, told the Daily Caller. Ryerson, a Stanford University MBA, has a certificate in public health policy from Stanford Business School.

The bill’s primary sponsor, Republican Georgia State Sen. Sam Watson, pushed back on the idea that the bill would prevent Americans from being able to sue manufacturers.

“It’s dealing with failure to warn, it’s not providing immunity,” Sen. Watson told the Caller. “It’s not preventing anyone to go after [manufacturers] because they thought that a product caused cancer. You can still do that, you just can’t do it for failure to warn of it causing cancer.”

Manufacturers that would be covered under Georgia’s bill include Bayer, who owns Monsanto, the maker of RoundUp. A Georgia jury is fresh off awarding a plaintiff over $2 billion in a judgement against Bayer after he blamed RoundUp for his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in a lawsuit.

RoundUp’s active ingredient is glyphosate, the most commonly used pesticide in the United States. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said glyphosate likely causes cancer in 2015, labelling it as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

“It says it’s likely and we saw that same report. It doesn’t say it does. It says that it suggests or it may be or probably or could cause,” Sen. Watson told the Caller.

The EPA reached a different conclusion. After a February 2020 review, the agency found “that there are no risks of concern to human health when glyphosate is used in accordance with its current label,” according to its website.

The IARC was accused of manipulating their data in 2017. A draft document of IARC’s 2015 study was unearthed and, according to Reuters, showed the agency dismissed and edited out conclusions contrary to their final report.

Watson claimed that the study which the IARC based its carcinogenic conclusion on also found a number of other common American lifestyle choices increased the risk of cancer.

“If you’ll keep reading in that study it also says that red meat is carcinogenic and night shift work is carcinogenic and a lot of other things that people do are carcinogenic. So, I mean, you need to read the whole study because one studies shift and dictate,” Watson told the Caller.

While the EPA did not concur with the IARC’s conclusion that glyphosate is a carcinogen, Ryerson alleged that the research they based that conclusion on was manipulated by Bayer/Monsanto.

Wisner Baum, a law firm which Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. once worked for, published a trove of documents that appeared to implicate Monsanto in ghostwriting a number of reports on glyphosate’s toxicity.

One email published by the firm allegedly shows that Monsanto commissioned scientist David Saltmiras and former Monsanto consultant Larry Keir to recruit respected names to write a review of glyphosate’s toxicity. “[E]ven though we feel confident that glyphosate is not genotoxic, this became a very difficult story to tell given all the complicated ‘noise’ out there,” the correspondence reads.

Keir’s name appears on the review that was eventually published, according to the documents obtained by Wisner Baum.

Other manufacturers that could benefit from the limited liability include Chinese chemical manufacturers. When ChemChina, a Chinese state-controlled chemical manufacturer, bought Swiss AgTech company Syngenta for $43 billion in 2017, it was forced by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to divest its rights to the company’s paraquat chemical business in the U.S. to an American firm.

However, China is still the primary producer of paraquat used in the U.S. while America is the world’s biggest importer, according to global shipping tracker Volza. The U.S. imports from 4,000 to 5,000 tons of the product annually, making up over 10 percent of China’s export supply, according to agropages.com

Like glyphosate, the EPA found “no dietary risks of concern associated with paraquat when it is used according to the label.” But others have called it “the deadliest chemical in US agriculture.”

National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies have linked the chemical to Parkinson’s disease, finding that people who used paraquat were 2.5 times more likely to develop Parkinson’s. Over 50 countries have banned its use, including China.

Sen. Watson, a vegetable farmer who uses RoundUp himself, argued it’s China’s very stranglehold over the paraquat market that makes SB 144 so necessary.

“If the Chinese become the only manufacturer of a product, you can’t go after them. It’s very difficult to go after a Chinese manufacturer for any kind of negligence claim,” he told the Caller.

“So I feel like they’re already protected, which makes it even more important to keep manufacturers in the United States because those are the ones that we can have recourse if they here in the United States.”

Ryerson disagreed. “I actually don’t care who manufactures it,” she said. “I just don’t want it anywhere in our system.”

Additionally, 99 percent of glyphosate used in the U.S. originated from China in 2024, according to a Farm Business Network survey.

The bill now sits on Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp’s desk for him to sign. “Our office has 40 days following the last day of the legislative session to conduct a thorough review of legislation that received final passage by the Georgia General Assembly. We will make an announcement upon the conclusion of that review process,” a spokesperson for Kemp’s office told the Caller.

Georgia’s legislative session ended April 4, giving the governor until May 14 to make a decision.

The bill represents a test of power for RFK Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) coalition. Self-proclaimed “MAHA moms” have been lobbying hard against its passage, imploring Kemp not to sign it. RFK, who tried and won cases on behalf of Monsanto victims in his past life as an attorney, has yet to publicly comment on the bill.

The Daily Caller reached out to HHS to get Secretary Kennedy’s thoughts on the bill but did not receive a response.

‘We Need Answers’: China Watchers Sound Alarm On Walz’s Cozy Relationship With Beijing

Lawmakers and China experts told the Daily Caller they have grave concerns about Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz and his close ties with Beijing.

Since Vice President Kamala Harris chose the Minnesota governor as her running mate, he has largely received positive coverage as “folksy,” “joyful” and a “midwestern dad.” But critics have honed in on Walz’s past with China, which includes a honeymoon to the country, a wedding on the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre and the praising of the country’s communist system. China watchers believe that Walz’s relationship with China should be of concern as he inches closer to the White House.

“Governor Walz should answer to the American people why he took 30 trips to China, mostly paid for in part or in full by the Chinese Communist Party. But more importantly, Kamala Harris should explain why she supports radical left-wing policies like ending fossil fuels and slashing our defense budget—policies that would be a gift to China,” Republican Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton told the Daily Caller.

Walz has visited China at least 30 times throughout his life, according to the New York Times. One of the trips to the country occurred when he was a fellow at Macau Polytechnic University, a Chinese state-run institution, according to the National Review. Harris’ running mate held the fellow position while he was a member of Congress.

One man, Shad, who claimed to have joined Walz on one of his trips to the country, shared concerns about his affinity for the Chinese government with Alpha News, a local Minnesota outlet.

“It was almost a daily revelation of how much he adores the communist regime,” the former student told Alpha News.

“He’s a Maoist to the core and should not be underestimated,” Shad, who asked the outlet not to use his last name, said to Alpha News.

Walz’s first visit to the country occurred in 1989 during that fellowship and not long after the Tiananmen Square massacre, multiple outlets reported.

The Minnesota governor married his wife on June 4, 1994, the fifth anniversary of the massacre, the BBC reported. Walz’s wife later said that “he wanted to have a date he’ll always remember.”

“It’s disturbing that the Democratic Party is lining up to nominate Tim Walz after he brushed off socialism as ‘neighborliness’ and praised Chinese communism as a system in which ‘everyone shares.’ He fits perfectly with Kamala Harris, who has repeatedly called for a society that creates equal outcomes for all Americans,” the Vice President of Heritage Action, Ryan Walker, told the Caller.

While teaching a high school social studies class in 1991, Walz praised the Chinese communist system. Walz taught his class that “everyone shares” and gets free food and housing from the Chinese communist government, according to the resurfaced newspaper piece first reported by the Washington Free Beacon.

The teacher went on to praise how people paid no taxes in the late 1970s and got 30 pounds of free food per month, the newspaper article states.

“This appears not to be some quirky snapshot of Walz’s 1990s thinking that he has since renounced, as it is echoed in the food price controls proposed recently by the Harris-Walz campaign, which have been slammed as naïve and destructive by critics across the political spectrum,” Adam Savit, director of America First Policy Institute’s China policy initiative, told the Caller.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer penned a letter on Aug. 16 on behalf of Congressional Republicans to launch an investigation into Walz and his ties to China. Comer asked FBI Director Christopher Wray for all documents relating to any Chinese entities that the now-governor may have interacted with while on his trips to the country. The chairman explained in his letter that it had come to the committee’s attention that Walz had “longstanding connections to CCP-connected entities and officials.”

“Governor Walz’s apparent fascination with and connections to the Chinese Communist Party are troubling to the Committee,” Comer told the Caller in a statement. “The Chinese Communist Party actively exploits trips to China and positions at their universities in an effort to co-opt influential figures to the benefit of the communist regime and to destabilize America.”

“What’s good for the CCP is often bad for America. The CCP appears to have recognized something valuable in Governor Walz, and every American should be concerned about his soft-on-China history,” he continued.

When Walz was 25 years old, he told one of his former college professors that he was “being treated like a king” in China, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

“No matter how long I live, I’ll never be treated that well again,” Walz said at the time to Times-Herald. “They gave me more gifts than I could bring home. It was an excellent experience.”

Harris’ running mate also previously spoke on the relationship between China and the United States, saying in 2016 that it does not necessarily need to be “adversarial.” On another occasion, the Minnesota governor explained that he is “pretty friendly with China.”

WATCH: Tim Walz: “I’m pretty friendly with China”

Since Harris tapped Walz to be her running mate about two weeks ago, the governor hasn’t answered questions about the China concerns. Similarly, the vice president has not done a sit-down interview or a press conference since launching her campaign for president. Harris is yet to unveil a policy platform, leaving the American people in the dark on the vice president’s stance on a variety of issues, such as foreign policy.

“I expect a potential Harris administration to continue the Biden policies toward China, as those policies reflected the new bipartisan consensus generated by Trump’s successful China policy which relied on heavy tariffs, strategic decoupling, and export controls to create leverage against the CCP regime. But how would we know?” Savit said.

“Harris has avoided any substantive interviews in the near-month since she became the de facto Democrat nominee. China is the most important challenge to our future security and prosperity, and we have no idea about what one of the major party presidential candidates proposes to do about it. We need answers,” he continued.

Communist Party Talent Program Scooped Up Former Microsoft Researchers. Now They Work In China’s AI Industry

A Chinese Communist Party (CCP) talent recruitment program scooped up former Microsoft researchers, including some who now work in China’s artificial intelligence (AI) industry, a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation found.

The “Thousand Talents Program” is the largest Chinese talent recruitment plan, aiming to poach U.S.-educated scientists and engineers for the benefit of the CCP. U.S. national security agencies have sounded the alarm over the program, saying it’s being used to steal intellectual property and technology to advance China’s military and economic goals.

Reviewing Chinese-language news reports, the DCNF was able to identify six former Microsoft researchers who were recruited by the CCP’s Thousand Talents Plan and currently work at China-based companies and universities. Five of those six individuals currently work in China’s AI industrial complex, the DCNF found.

Microsoft did not respond to the DCNF’s requests for comment.

China is racing to keep up with the U.S. in the contest to produce increasingly powerful AI systems that can be used for both commercial and military applications, according to The New York Times. Despite pressure from the CCP on firms in that country to catch up to the U.S., China remains a year or more behind in AI development and is using U.S. technology it can get its hands on to try and fill in the gap.

More than 10,000 scientists have been recruited as part of the program, former CIA Senior Intelligence Service member William Hannas told The New York Times.

“This isn’t just any old recruitment program that recruits and trains technologists like we would have in America,” Geoffrey Cain, an author and journalist who’s spent a decade investigating Microsoft in China, told the DCNF. “This is a communist party-run project to ensure that China can achieve technological supremacy over the Western liberal democratic world.”

Microsoft has positioned itself as an industry leader in the race to create increasingly expansive and useful AI-powered products, partnering with OpenAI and incorporating AI into its existing offerings like its search engine and word processor, according to The Wall Street Journal.

“If [China] lead[s] the world in AI, that is a nightmare scenario, including for the Chinese people,” Conor Healy, director of government research at security and surveillance industry research group IPVM, told the DCNF. “Just ask the Uyghurs, 10 million of whom live in an open-air prison in Xinjiang automated by surveillance technology.”

‘Burying Its Head In The Sand’

Microsoft boasted in a 2016 news release that 20 alumni of its Asian research institute, called Microsoft Research Asia, had been selected for membership in the Thousand Talents Program. Through Chinese-language news reports, the DCNF identified six prominent former Microsoft researchers who went on to join the CCP’s Thousand Talents Program while working for China-based companies and universities.

Computer scientist Zhang Zheng, for instance, worked at Microsoft Research Asia from 2001 to 2014, where he was eventually made vice president. Zheng has also been described as an expert in AI, according to Chinese news site ScienceNet. In 2016, the Chinese news site Caixin identified Zheng as a national Thousand Talents Program “expert.”

Zheng was appointed to be the director of Amazon Web Services’ Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Lab in 2018, and he is currently listed as a professor of computer science at New York University Shanghai. Zheng did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

In another case, Li Shipeng worked at Microsoft as a “research area manager/principal researcher” from 1999 to 2015 before becoming a vice president at the voice recognition tech firm iFlytek. The U.S. government sanctioned iFlytek in 2019 over its role in oppressing Uyghur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang province.

China’s Ministry of Science and Technology listed iFlytek among three other companies as the country’s leading firms in AI in 2017, The South China Morning Post reported.

Shipeng is described as a Thousand Talents Program “expert” in a biography written for a 2018 China Computer Federation forum, which the DCNF translated. The biography also claims Shipeng holds 196 U.S. patents. Shipeng is currently the executive president of the Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society in China. The institute did not respond to the DCNF’s requests for comment. Shipeng could not be reached for comment.

Ya-Qin Zhang worked for Microsoft from 1999 to 2014, serving as founder and chairman of the Microsoft Asia-Pacific Research and Development Group starting in 2006. Zhang then led tech company Baidu as president from 2014 to 2019. Zhang was recruited by the Thousand Talents Program during his tenure at Baidu, the Chinese news outlets Jiemian and China News Service reported.

Zhang serves as dean of the Institute for AI Industry Research at China’s Tsinghua University. Zhang did not respond to requests for comment.

Zhang’s former company, Baidu, pushed to become a top contender in AI while he was working there. Former Baidu COO Qi Lu worked at the company from January 2017 to June 2018 and encouraged the push into AI, Wired reported. Lu previously worked at Microsoft from 2009 to 2016.

Former Microsoft Research Asia employee Wen Jirong later became chairman of Elensdata, a technology company focused on developing AI, according to the company’s website. Elensdata’s website identifies Jirong and other founding team members as experts from the Thousand Talents Program and notes Jirong’s experience working on AI at Microsoft. The website also says Jirong holds 50 U.S. patents.

Jirong serves as a professor and the executive dean of the Gaoling School of Artificial Intelligence at China’s Renmin University. Jirong did not respond to requests for comment.

Microsoft Research Asia employed Zhang Hongjiang from 1999 to 2011 before he went to work for the Chinese software and internet service company Kingsoft, according to a 2018 Carlyle Group press release. Hongjiang joined the investment firm that year as a senior advisor. Zhang was a research manager at HP Labs in Palo Alto, California, before he joined Microsoft, according to Carlyle’s release.

Hongjiang was recruited by the Thousand Talents Program in 2012, not long after leaving Microsoft, according to Chinese industry news site Brandcn. Hongjiang is currently listed as a distinguished visiting professor at Tsinghua University in China, where he is the chairman of the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence. Honjiang didn’t respond to the DCNF’s requests for comment.

Chen Benfeng was selected in the eleventh batch of the Thousand Talents Program in 2015, according to the Chinese news site CNICN. Benfeng worked at Microsoft’s U.S. headquarters on the company’s browser team, according to Sing Tao Daily.

Benfeng founded cybersecurity firm CloudDeep Technology in 2013 and is still listed as working there. CloudDeep did not respond to requests for comment, and Benfeng could not be reached for comment.

“Microsoft would seem to have a strong interest in proactively preventing and monitoring this, but it is not alone among American corporations in burying its head in the sand,” Healy told the DCNF.

‘Too Close To A Foreign Adversary’

Microsoft has deep political ties to the Biden administration, with Microsoft President Brad Smith visiting President Joe Biden’s White House at least 30 times as of February 2024. Smith’s visits came as Microsoft sought to shape the Biden administration’s AI policy and as company executives shelled out hundreds of thousands of dollars to the president’s reelection efforts, according to Federal Election Commission data.

The tech giant and its subsidiaries spent millions to lobby the federal government in 2022, as it looked to retain the U.S. government as a massive buyer of its productivity software. Microsoft lobbied on 12 different bills that sought to regulate AI in 2023, more than Google, Meta and Amazon, according to Open Secrets.

In that vein, Microsoft promised in July 2023 that it would ensure that AI research is “safe, secure, and trustworthy,” according to a blog post from the company.

“The fact that the Thousand Talents Program is recruiting Microsoft researchers is incredibly alarming because U.S. law enforcement and counterintelligence have raised concerns that Thousand Talents is being used to steal intellectual property and spy on Americans,” Cain told the DCNF.

“This is what happens when a company becomes too close to a foreign adversary,” Cain said. “Microsoft has instilled in them a vast amount of intellectual property and technological trade secrets that could easily be used against Americans.”

China on the Verge of Collapse?

Marxism is a material philosophy that denies the existence of anything but the physically substantial. Thus, communism’s hatred of religion, which proposes that there is an unseen world and that life beyond the grave should concern mortal men and women.

Additionally, Marxism sees itself as a comprehensive, as an anti-theistic religion demanding not only entire allegiance but unquestioning acceptance of its dogmas.

So, it is natural that the world’s largest communist state, China, should oppress religious believers of all faiths and deny the Chinese people even a hint of self-government. In the absence of religion and civic self-determination, China’s leaders have promised their subjects (an appropriate characterization of those living under the Maoist thumb) growing economic prosperity in place of religious and political liberty.

Not only does Marxism reduce man to a strictly economic creature for whom beauty and creativity must comport with strict, state-approved standards.

In recent decades, China has become economically stronger and stronger. Its standing among the family of nations has grown exponentially as its business and military sectors, integrated closely with one another, have led to skyscraper-laden cities and potency in the world’s economic forums.

China is expanding its global influence through loaning money to developing nations for infrastructure (the “Belt and Road Initiative,” or BRI) and membership in the “BRICS” bloc. Composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (and, recently, six new smaller nations), BRICS members seek to thumb their nose at developed and republican-oriented nations. Aggravated by calls that they observe respect for human rights and, in some cases, stop their military adventurism, the BRICS countries see themselves as an alternative to the industrialized powers of Europe, North America, Japan and Australia.

But economies can change rapidly. No one anticipated the COVID down-turn of 2020 and its effects on a booming U.S. private sector. And it looks like the uber-Maoist Xi Jinping has been caught rather by surprise by the slump that is hitting Red China.

Characterized by financial journalist Milton Ezrati as “always something of a Mafia-like enterprise,” the BRI would invite poorer countries to borrow money from China in return for construction of dams, roads, rail lines, and so forth. The problem for China is that these poor countries remain poor — and cannot repay their loans. Ezrati notes that “economists at the World Bank estimate that now some 60 percent of all BRI loans involve countries in financial distress.”

Then there’s China’s relentless assault on U.S. firms. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, on her recent trip to Beijing, told her hosts that China’s “raids on (American) firms” with office in China and its vast intellectual property theft enterprise. Raimondo also noted that along with “unexplained fines and unpredictable official behavior,” China is on the verge of becoming anathema for U.S. companies. “U.S. business needs to see some action taken to address these issues,” Raimondo said. “Otherwise, they will deem it as just too risky and … uninvestable.”

The federal government is also taking action against China’s theft of critical American technologies and even such things as copyrighted agricultural products. The FBI “has designated Chinese espionage as its ‘top counterintelligence priority,’ considering it a substantial threat to the nation’s core economic assets and technological innovations.” China has “targeted a broad range of sectors, including government, businesses, academic institutions, researchers, and even the general public.”

FBI Director Christopher Wray reports that “China’s hacking program is more extensive than the combined efforts of all other nations, making it a significant challenge for U.S. cybersecurity.” The Biden White House restricting American investment in “Chinese military–connected firms operating within certain critical technology sectors — semiconductors, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence.” But there’s much more to do.

The notorious and now thankfully defunct “one-child” policy also cost China tens of millions of men and women who would now be in the workforce. The grotesque immorality of this policy is now compounded by its economic impact: “With China’s population aging rapidly, there are fewer working-age people to support retirees,” writes my friend Jeanne Mancini. “The one-child policy, which lasted for more than three decades before ending in 2016, worsened the situation and threatens long-term economic prospects.”

Put altogether, China’s prospects for economic power are dimming significantly. “Consumer prices are falling, a real estate crisis is deepening ,and exports are in a slump. Unemployment among youth has gotten so bad the government has stopped publishing the data,” writes journalist Lauren He.

So, China’s promised prosperity is shriveling, and its oppression of Christians, Muslims, and others is increasing. Long a land of frequent revolutions, it’s not unrealistic to wonder what the next 10 years bode for the Middle Kingdom.

Chinese Operatives Ran A Massive TikTok Campaign To Help Dems In The Midterm Elections

  • TikTok accounts operating on behalf of Chinese state media published content that criticized Republicans and favored Democrats ahead of the 2022 U.S. midterm elections, a Forbes investigation found.
  • Despite TikTok rules requiring accounts to disclose their government ties, at least three Chinese government-affiliated accounts with millions of views did not clearly describe their status to users.
  • “This opens a new dimension for conversation about TikTok,” Conor Healy, director of government research at surveillance research group IPVM, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

TikTok accounts operating as voices of Chinese state media promoted messages that appeared to denigrate Republican candidates and favor Democratic ones ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, according to a Forbes investigation.

While the Chinese-owned social media app has verbally affirmed the need to crack down on election disinformation and foreign interference, several news-oriented accounts failed to disclose their affiliation with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) state-owned media on the platform, Forbes found. The accounts racked up tens of millions views on posts that covered divisive topics, such as abortion and race, as well as critical clips that mostly targeted Republican candidates ahead of the 2022 midterms.

“This opens a new dimension for conversation about TikTok,” Conor Healy, director of government research at surveillance research group IPVM, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The accounts are managed by MediaLinks TV, which registered as a foreign agent for China with the Treasury Department in 2019 and distributes the U.S. branch of China Central Television (CCTV), CGTN, according to the company’s LinkedIn page. MediaLinks also operates the CCTV and CGTN apps, according to Apple.

The largest accounts are @Panadorama, @The…Optimist and @NewsTokss, the latter of which expressly covers U.S. national news, according to Forbes.

NewsTokss in particular ran content that overall shone Republican politicians in an unfavorable light and praised Democrats, Forbes found.

A video from July was introduced with the caption “Cruz, Abbott Don’t Care About Us,” referring to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and the state’s governor, Greg Abbott, according to Forbes. Another from October criticized Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida for having “Done Absolutely Nothing.”

Some content swayed against Democrats; one NewsTokss video in October asked viewers whether President Joe Biden’s promise to enshrine abortion rights served as a “political manipulation tactic,” Forbes found.

None of the videos clearly disclosed their ties to CGTN or the Chinese government, but the accounts’ profile bios did spell out, “Material distributed by MediaLinks TV LLC on behalf of CCTV. More info at DOJ, D.C.,” Forbes reported.

“That’s not disclosure,” Healy said. Between May 8 and July 6, NewsTokss received 8.3 million views but only 57,600 profile views, suggesting many users who watched the videos may not have realized a foreign government was pushing the content, Forbes reported.

Further, by redirecting users to the Department of Justice (DOJ), MediaLinks shrouded its status as a foreign agent.

However, such high-profile accounts should be easily identifiable as state-run, Healy argued to the DCNF.

“Either they don’t care and don’t have the protocols in place to deal with this, or they’re letting it happen,” he said.

In September, TikTok announced a new pilot policy of “mandatory verification for accounts belonging to governments, politicians, and political parties through the midterm elections” in November.

“We plan to introduce our state-controlled media policy and corresponding labels globally next year as part of our continued focus on media literacy,” a spokesperson for TikTok told Forbes.

Chinese company ByteDance owns TikTok, causing suspicion that the company takes orders or signals from the CCP and prompting politicians to call for banning the app across the federal government.

Technology and China researchers have long expressed concerns about China’s election interference via social media content; cybersecurity firm Recorded Future warned ahead of the 2018 midterm elections found Chinese-run accounts “disseminating breaking news and biased content surrounding President Trump and China-related issues.”

CGTN did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

CEO Allegedly Conspired To Store California Election Workers’ Data In China

Eugene Yu, whom police arrested last week for alleged data theft, allegedly conspired to store California election workers’ personal data in China during the 2020 presidential election, prosecutors said in a court filing Thursday.

Yu’s firm, Konnech, entered a contract with Los Angeles County to provide secure poll worker management software for the 2020 election that stipulated all employee payroll and scheduling data collected by the company should be stored in the U.S., according to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office. Despite multiple statements to The New York Times denying Yu or Konnech stored data in China, new court filings indicate that Yu deliberately collaborated with unknown conspirators to transfer the personal information of hundreds of Los Angeles election workers through third party contractors based in China.

Luis Nabergoi, Konnech’s project manager for the Los Angeles operation, sent a memo via Chinese messaging app DingTalk around Aug. 18 confirming Chinese contractors exercised so-called “superadministration” privileges for all clients of Konnech’s PollChief software, the court documents state. Nabergoi called the situation a “huge security issue.”

The Chinese company with whom Konnech contracted was responsible for developing troubleshooting software, according to the NYT.

On Oct. 4, Nabergoi sent an internal email informing Konnech employees the company was “moving t0 a new stage in the company maturity and we need to ensure the security, privacy and confidentiality or [sic] our client data,” the court documents state.

The documents also included allegations the company embezzled at least $2,645,000 by violating the company’s contract with Los Angeles County.

Authorities arrested Yu in Michigan on Oct. 5 following initial allegations that Konnech stored the personal information of Los Angeles election workers in servers located in China, extraditing him to California afterward.

“Data breaches are an ongoing threat to our digital way of life. When we entrust a company to hold our confidential data, they must be willing and able to protect our personal identifying information from theft,” District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.

Gascón said the event could constitute a “cyber intrusion” in U.S. elections.

None of the data appeared to have been sold, according to the Los Angeles Times. However, intelligence services operating on behalf of Beijing could obtain access to information from private companies housed in Chinese servers, according to a 2020 Foreign Policy report.

None of Konnech’s actions had an effect on vote counting or altered election results, according to the L.A. District Attorney’s office.

True The Vote, a election integrity organization, previously reported concerns about Yu and Konnech to the FBI in 2021 after claiming their researchers had accessed Konnech data from servers in China, according to the NYT. Los Angeles County authorities began investigating Konnech after receiving a tip from Gregg Phillips, a True The Vote associate.

After Yu’s arrest, Konnech distributed a letter to clients claiming the company “never hosted your data or system in servers outside of the United States,” the NYT reported.

The district attorney declined to say whether other individuals were under investigation, the NYT reported.

Konnech did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

Top Pelosi Staffer Registered As ‘Foreign Agent’ to Lobby For Chinese State Media Outlet

The one entity the Democrats won’t serve or represent are the American people. Democrat party of treason.

EXCLUSIVE: Top Pelosi Staffer Registered As ‘Foreign Agent’ to Lobby For Chinese State Media Outlet

By: Natalie Winters, August 13, 2020

Brendan Daly, former Communications Director for Nancy Pelosi and a political appointee of the Obama administration, is a registered foreign agent who provided the Chinese Communist Party’s premier state-run media outlet China Central Television Network with “strategic counsel” as it expanded into the United States, The National Pulse can reveal.

During his tenure as Executive Vice President at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, Daly secured a contract between the lobbying behemoth and China Central Television Network (CCTV).

Specifically, the firm helped the state-run propaganda outfit CCTV expand into American homes by “providing strategic counsel, identify relevant parties to communications activities, and media relations to support the launch of CCTV America.”

“Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide will work with CCTV America to communicate to the American public that CCTV America will provide compelling, comprehensive, and balanced news programming from an Asian perspective that is relevant to a global audience,” the 2012 filing in accordance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) noted.

Per CCTV’s FARA registration, however, the outlet is “supervised, owned, directed, controlled, financed, and subsidized” entirely by the Chinese Communist Party.

Email correspondence from Daly identifies him as taking the lead on the account, as he spoke with CCTV’s American representative on the phone.

He also provided the outlet with a memo detailing Ogilvy’s strategy on the count, detailing how to best bridge the gap between American homes and Chinese Communist Party propaganda:

The memo, sent from Daly, outlines how Ogilvy would provide CCTV with comprehensive support, including “influencer engagement” and “media relations support,” to achieve the “overall message that CCTV Americas is the source for business news in and with China, with credentialed, experienced and trusted journalists doing in-depth stories and reporting.”

“We are excited about the prospect of working with you to help establish CCTV Americas as the program to watch to succeed in an interconnected global economy,” the email concludes.

CCTV has been identified by Freedom House think tank as a “long-standing weapon in Beijing’s arsenal of repression” whose mission “is to attack designated enemies of the Communist Party,” chiefly the U.S.

Daly informed fellow employees that CCTV had hired Ogilvy, noting the CCP-funded outlet would pay the firm $15,000 monthly for three months.

“China Central Television is the national television station of the People’s Republic of China. CCTV America is the bureau located in Washington DC.

CCTV falls under the supervision of the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television which is in turn subordinate to the State Council of the People’s Republic Of China,” the FARA registration noted, placing Daly on the payroll of the Chinese Communist Party.
