Former New Mexico Democrat Judge Jose “Joel” Cano and his wife were reportedly taken into custody Thursday by federal officials after being accused of harboring a Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang member in their home.
KFOX14 captured video Thursday afternoon showing federal officials placing Cano and his wife Nancy into custody as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers executed a search and probable cause arrest warrant at their Las Cruces home. The video shows officials wearing Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) vests detaining the couple near a set of vehicles, with both placed in handcuffs.
In March, Cano resigned from his position after 23-year-old Venezuelan national Cristhian Ortega-Lopez was arrested by authorities, according to the Albuquerque Journal. Ortega-Lopez had reportedly met Nancy Cano after illegally entering the U.S. in 2023 near Eagle Pass, Texas and later accepted her offer to stay in a “casita” behind their home, the outlet reported.
Leading up to Cano’s resignation, the Department of Justice said federal authorities had executed search warrants related to unlawful firearm possession and other offenses involving four illegal migrants in the state — Ortega-Lopez among them.
A spokesperson for ICE said to KFOX14 that both Cano and his wife had been taken into custody during the raid of their home, with HSI agents telling the outlet that both face evidence-tampering charges.
Ortega-Lopez is accused of being an illegal migrant in possession of firearms as well as having affiliations with TdA. Official charges against Cano and his wife have not been officially released.
The FBI was unable to provide the Daily Caller News Foundation with any further information due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
HSI and ICE did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

What could possibly go wrong with such a system in government hands?
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has awarded a $30 million contract to arch-technocrat Peter Thiel’s company, Palantir Technologies.
The contract calls for Palantir to develop ImmigrationOS, a comprehensive digital platform aimed at streamlining and expanding the agency’s deportation apparatus.
Biometric Update reports that the contract marks a deepening of Palantir’s role in immigration enforcement, which stretches back to when it first supplied data-gathering tools to ICE in 2014.
Palantir also has contracts with the CIA, FBI and DoD and, as I reported on April 14, recently struck a deal with NATO to supply AI-powered Smart warfighting systems.
President Trump pledged on the campaign trail to deport at least 13 million illegal aliens in what he said would be “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”
However, his efforts have been severely hampered by logistical, legal, and political hurdles. In the first 50 days of Trump’s second term, ICE reported a mere 32,000 arrests, nothing approaching the millions of deportations promised by Trump and his border czar Tom Homan.
According to the report by Biometric Update:
“ImmigrationOS is an end-to-end digital ecosystem that automates the lifecycle of deportation. Its architecture is built to optimize three primary enforcement areas. First, the system prioritizes targets using AI to sift through immigration records, criminal histories, and social indicators such as known affiliations or prior infractions.
“Second, it provides near real-time monitoring of “self-deportation” events, enabling ICE to track individuals who exit the United States voluntarily, often under pressure. Third, it supports what the agency refers to as ‘immigration lifecycle management,’ which includes coordinating logistics for detentions, removals, and administrative follow-through to minimize operational delays.
“At the center of this platform is the integration of data from an extraordinary range of sources. ImmigrationOS pulls from the Social Security Administration (SSA), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and state voter rolls, among others.”
Biometric Update noted that there are allegations that data for ImmigrationOS is being sourced through unauthorized access to government databases, facilitated by individuals with high-level access, leading to concerns about the legality and ethics of the data-collection methods being employed.
If you’re a patriotic flag-waving MAGA Republican, this might all sound just dandy. And I agree, we have way too many illegals in this country.
But if you’re a thinking conservative whose patriotism is tethered to a strong belief that government cannot be trusted to stay within its Constitutional bounds, this story is disturbing. Is it not part of a strategic move, a Hegelian dialectic, on the part of the globalists to create a problem under one administration, in this case that of Joe Biden, that cries out for a solution by the next administration, even if by extraordinary means? And if that extraordinary means is normalized, could it not be weaponized against American citizens later on, likely by a future administration?
Think about this: What’s to stop Palantir from selling this same AI-powered software system to the FBI or DHS under a future Democrat administration, renaming it, and using it to round up outspoken Christian conservatives and Trump supporters and place them in detention camps?
It may sound crazy, but we’ve already seen a nationwide manhunt for J6ers under the Biden administration. They looked under every stone for folks whose biggest crime was trusting police who welcomed them into the Capitol and a space they weren’t supposed to legally be in. Think of how quickly they could have rounded those folks up with Palantir’s data-gathering and self-analyzing artificial intelligence! This system can find out everything about a person within a matter of seconds, including where you live, where you shop, where you bank, where you work, your favorite hangouts, and the same information about all your friends, family members and co-workers.

Did you know that your tax dollars funded the housing and transportation of illegal aliens across the country? President Donald Trump has moved to stop this phenomenon, and his efforts recently met with an important success.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops announced that it would not renew agreements with the federal government relating to children’s services and refugee support.
As I wrote in my book, “The Woketopus: The Dark Money Cabal Manipulating the Federal Government,” the USCCB formed one arm of the Immigration Industrial Complex, the network of NGOs receiving federal funds to move illegal aliens across the country.

Some of this work may be noble—it involved finding homes for unaccompanied alien children and those freed from human trafficking—but it also abetted the border crisis, on an industrial scale.
The Immigration Industrial Complex
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas admitted in an April 2022 memorandum that his plan for “border security” involved “bolstering the capacity of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to receive noncitizens after they have been processed by [Customs and Border Protection] and are awaiting the results of their immigration removal proceedings.”
The Biden administration released millions of illegal aliens on parole, giving them court dates to adjudicate their immigration status, but these aliens routinely miss their court dates and move to live elsewhere in the country.
In 2022, The Heritage Foundation’s Border Security and Immigration Center teamed up with the Oversight Project to track where illegal aliens move. They traced cell phones detected at federal immigration facilities, finding that these devices moved across the country.
Illegal aliens in facilities maintained by Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, for example, moved to 433 out of America’s 435 congressional districts.
As a reminder, at least 9 million illegal aliens entered the United States under President Joe Biden. Only 11 U.S. states have populations greater than 9 million, and even left-leaning “sanctuary city” mayors lamented their inability to deal with the influx of illegal aliens.
Many faith-based NGOs that launched to help legal immigrants in previous eras of U.S. history revamped their efforts in recent years, helping immigrants apparently regardless of legal status. These Immigration Industrial Complex groups likely would not exist without federal funding.
Global Refuge, formerly Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, for example, received $180 million in government grants, more than seven times what it received in “all other contributions” ($25 million), in 2022. The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants reported receiving the vast majority of its revenue ($117.4 million of $121.7 million) through government grants in 2020.
Chapters of Catholic Charities received at least $1.13 billion under Biden through the Refugee and Entrant Assistance State/Replacement Designee Administered Programs grant from the Administration for Children and Families in the Department of Health and Human Services, for example. Catholic Charities USA received $1.4 billion of its $4.7 billion in revenue from government support in 2022—more than the $1 billion it received in private donations.
The Trump Freeze
The Trump administration froze tens of millions of dollars in grants in order to conduct a program integrity review. This seems eminently reasonable. While Americans of faith like myself may support programs that care for the less fortunate—particularly legal immigrants and refugees— we should not be forced to pay for these charitable programs with our tax dollars, much less have our tax dollars spent to help relocate illegal aliens across the country.
The administration should ensure that these programs do not abet the immigration crisis and incentivize more illegals to enter the country.
USCCB sued the State Department in March to challenge the freeze on around $65 million in federal funding for refugee services. The Biden administration had provided the USCCB with $100 million annually, and the funding covered more than 95% of the bishops’ spending on those programs.
The State Department canceled two multimillion-dollar refugee resettlement contracts with USCCB last month, directing the bishops to “stop all work on these program[s] and not incur any new costs.”
Only in this context did the USCCB finally announce the end of its work with the federal government.
“Today, the USCCB makes the heartbreaking announcement that we will not be renewing existing cooperative agreements with the federal government related to children’s services and refugee support,” the bishops said. “This difficult decision follows the suspension by the government of our cooperative agreements to resettle refugees.”
In other words, the USCCB is claiming to take a pro-active action, but the announcement actually represents the USCCB’s recognition of reality—the administration had already made the determinative steps.
‘Rigorous Screening’
Notably, USCCB claimed, “All participants in these programs were welcomed by the U.S. government to come to the United States and underwent rigorous screening before their arrival.”
The Biden administration “welcomed” many immigrants outside the legal channels established by Congress, particularly through the program that imported people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. The Biden administration chartered planes for these aliens and granted them parole to remain in the country, a protection the Trump administration will remove later this month.
Lora Ries, director of The Heritage Foundation’s Border Security and Immigration Center, contested the vetting claim.
“The Biden administration demonstrated repeatedly that aliens and sponsors were not adequately vetted, whether that was Afghan evacuees, sponsors for unaccompanied children, sponsors for parolees, or others,” she told The Daily Signal.
“Lack of vetting was the reason for multiple Inspector General reports and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services pause of one of its parole programs,” Ries added.
A Critical Admission
Bill Canny, the executive director of USCCB’s Migration and Refugee Services program, told EWTN News that the program cannot continue without federal funding.
“You can’t replace the generosity of the [United States] taxpayer and how they help either needy people overseas or needy people domestically,” Canny told EWTN. “You can’t replace that, in this case, some $200 million a year, which it would have been this year. So we can’t replace it with private [money].”
Perhaps USCCB should create a new program that can be funded with private donations, to address the real human concerns that justified the original program. In that case, not only would the program be directed to the people who most need it, but it would also be able to survive without federal strings attached.
USCCB was fulfilling a few important charitable functions, but its old program formed part of a noxious Immigration Industrial Complex. I pray that it can establish a new program dedicated to helping legal refugees and human trafficking victims, without abetting the border crisis.
Americans of faith in general—and Catholics, in particular—are a generous people. Let’s allow them to fund charity with their own dollars, not by using the power of the state to force them to fork over the cash.

The Supreme Court acted “literally in the middle of the night” and without sufficient explanation in blocking the Trump administration from deporting any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th-century wartime law, Justice Samuel Alito wrote in a sharp dissent that castigated the seven-member majority.
NEWSMAX — Joined by fellow conservative Justice Clarence Thomas, Alito said there was “dubious factual support” for granting the request in an emergency appeal from the American Civil Liberties Union. The group contended that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart such removals under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.
The majority did not provide a detailed explanation in the order early Saturday, as is typical, but the court previously said deportations could proceed only after those about to be removed had a chance to argue their case in court and were given “a reasonable time” to contest their pending removals.
“Both the Executive and the Judiciary have an obligation to follow the law,” Alito said in the dissent released hours after the court’s intervention against Republican President Donald Trump’s administration.
The justices’ brief order directed the administration not to remove Venezuelans held in the Bluebonnet Detention Center “until further order of this court.”
Alito said that “unprecedented” relief was “hastily and prematurely granted.”
He wrote that it was not clear whether the Supreme Court had jurisdiction at this stage of the case, saying that not all legal avenues had been played out in lower courts and the justices had not had the chance to hear the government’s side.
“The only papers before this Court were those submitted by the applicants. The Court had not ordered or received a response by the Government regarding either the applicants’ factual allegations or any of the legal issues presented by the application. And the Court did not have the benefit of a Government response filed in any of the lower courts either,” Alito said.
Alito said the legal filings, “while alleging that the applicants were in imminent danger of removal, provided little concrete support for that allegation.” He noted that while the court did not hear directly from the government regarding any planned deportations under the Alien Enemies Act in this case, a government lawyer in a different matter had told a U.S. District Court in a hearing Friday evening that no such deportations were then planned to occur either Friday or Saturday.
“In sum, literally in the middle of the night, the Court issued unprecedented and legally questionable relief without giving the lower courts a chance to rule, without hearing from the opposing party, within eight hours of receiving the application, with dubious factual support for its order, and without providing any explanation for its order,” Alito wrote. “I refused to join the Court’s order because we had no good reason to think that, under the circumstances, issuing an order at midnight was necessary or appropriate. Both the Executive and the Judiciary have an obligation to follow the law.”
The administration has filed paperwork urging the high court to reconsider its hold.

According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), American taxpayers incur expenses surpassing $182 billion yearly due to the presence of approximately 20 million illegal aliens and their offspring, based on both federal and state expenditures. Despite some illegal aliens contributing taxes, reports suggest they remain a net fiscal burden, estimated at roughly $150.7 billion.

GOP lawmakers expressed outrage on social media after Maryland Democrat Sen. Chris Van Hollen met with a deported illegal alien in El Salvador on Thursday.
“Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland looked like a fool yesterday standing in El Salvador begging for attention from the fake news media, or anyone,” President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador to demand the release from prison of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who the senator claims was “illegally abducted” from Maryland. Abrego Garcia entered the U.S. illegally in 2012, has ties to MS-13, and the Department of Homeland Security claims he has been involved in human trafficking activity.
“Find someone who looks at you the way Democrat senators look at illegal alien MS-13 gang members,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, wrote sarcastically on X with a photo of the two men talking.
Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., called Van Hollen’s actions “traitorous,” and Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., bashed his fellow Maryland lawmaker for showing more support to an illegal alien than the family of slain Maryland mother Rachel Morin, who was raped and murdered by an illegal alien in 2023.
“Imagine if Sen. Van Hollen cared as much about the families of Rachel Morin and Kayla Hamilton,” Harris wrote on X. An illegal alien MS-13 gang member killed Hamilton, a 20-year-old Maryland woman, in 2023.
“Leftist politicians only want to talk about bringing illegal immigrants back to Maryland,” Harris added.
After more Democrats expressed an interest in visiting Abrego Garcia in El Salvador, Rep. Mark Green, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, issued a statement saying his colleagues on the Left “can use their own personal credit cards—not taxpayers’ money—to virtue-signal to their radical base.”
GOP politicians were not the only ones criticizing Van Hollen after his meeting with Abrego Garcia. The Libs of TikTok X account, which has over 4 million followers, shared a blank photo on social media with the caption, “Here’s an image of Democrat Sen. Chris Van Hollen meeting with Rachel Morin’s family who was murdered by an illegal in his state.”
Ahead of Van Vollen’s meeting with Abrego Garcia, The Daily Wire political commentator Michael Knowles made a meme of Van Hollen looking into the eyes of a man intended to represent an illegal alien gang member.
After the meeting in El Salvador, Knowles shared the image of Van Hollen and Abrego Garcia seated at a table together talking with the tongue-in-cheek caption, “He … he did. He actually did it. [Van Hollen] did my meme.”
Despite Van Hollen’s calls for Abrego Garcia to be returned to America, and U.S. courts ordering the Trump administration to “facilitate” his return, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele says the deported illegal alien has the “honor of staying in El Salvador’s custody.”

The Daily Caller exclusively obtained the first photos of the FBI’s raid Thursday that resulted in the arrest of a major MS-13 leader.
Law enforcement arrested top MS-13 leader, Henry Josue Villatoro-Santos, in an early morning raid in Northern Virginia.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, Virginia GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin and FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest at a press conference March 27. Villatoro-Santos, who was allegedly one of the top three leaders of the gang in the U.S., was caught just miles outside of Washington, D.C.
The FBI shared with the Caller the first photos of the raid, offering a behind the scenes look at the operation.
MS-13 is an international criminal syndicate that has been tied to countless murders, rapes and other heinous crimes across the country. The gang originated in Los Angeles, but is now largely associated with Salvadoran nationals.
“He was the leader for the East Coast, one of the top three in the entire country, right here in Virginia, living half an hour outside of Washington, D.C.,” Bondi said at a joint press conference. “He is an illegal alien from El Salvador and he will not be living in our country much longer.”
“America is safer today because one of the top domestic terrorists in MS-13 is off the streets,” Bondi continued.
In two photos obtained by the Caller, FBI Director Kash Patel is seen thanking agents for their work the day of the raid.
To capture Villatoro-Santos, an FBI SWAT team breached the front and rear door of his mother’s home, the New York Post reported. After agents spotted Villatoro-Santos trying to hide and refusing to surrender, agents lobbed a stun grenade and pulled him out of the house, according to the outlet.
Bondi said on Fox News’s “The Ingraham Angle” that Villatoro-Santos had been recruited to join the gang in middle school. According to officials, he had a stash of weapons, ammunition, and silencers in his garage when they found him.
Villatoro-Santos’ mother denied to WUSA9 News, a local outlet, that her son was a part of the gang.

Katharine Boasberg, the daughter of the federal judge who halted the Trump administration from using the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to send alleged Tren de Aragua members to a megaprison in El Salvador, conducts “capacity building work in public defender offices across the nation” for the nonprofit group Partners in Justice.
Partners in Justice removed Boasberg’s biography page from its website after her father was assigned to the Alien Enemies Act case.
The group’s latest tax filings show it received more than $3.3 million in government grants in 2023, which made up about half of the nonprofit’s total revenues, and public social media posts from the group’s founder demonstrate that it staunchly pro-immigrant.
“That was (rightly) quick,” Partners in Justice founder and executive director Emily Galvin-Almanza tweeted on March 15, in response to a news report on Judge Boasberg’s temporary restraining order blocking the Trump administration from using the 18th-century law to deport alleged criminal illegal migrants.
Last month, Galvin-Almanza railed against the Laken Riley Act in a video on X bearing her nonprofit’s logo.
The activist slammed the law, which requires the detention of illegal immigrants charged with certain crimes, as “horrible” and “cruel” because it reduces the power judges have in cases involving criminal migrants.
One of Trump’s closest advisers, Department of Government Efficiency chief Elon Musk, described Katharine Boasberg’s ties with the nonprofit as “concerning.”
Musk’s comment came in response to an X post alleging that Partners in Justice “provides legal advice and representation to criminal illegal aliens,” including “TDA and MS-13 members.”
Judge Boasberg halted the Trump administration from sending alleged gang members to a mega-prison in El Salvador.

Faced with a new administration laser focused on mass deportation and the real possibility of being sent to a mega-prison in Central America, many illegal migrants are choosing to hit the exit button voluntarily.
A number of foreign nationals in Denver, the city that absorbed the most illegal migrants per capita than any other major U.S. city, are becoming far more receptive to the idea of self-deportation, according to a report from the New York Times. The current sentiment is a sea change from the Biden-era, when immigration officials allowed millions of foreign nationals to apply for asylum and remain.
Christian, a 29-year-old Venezuelan national who arrived in Denver in 2023, obtained a work permit and requested asylum, according to the NYT. However, he told the outlet that his feelings have changed “360 degrees” since Trump returned to the White House, and he has since made an appointment with a judge to request voluntary departure from the U.S.
“I just hope to manage to leave before they deport me,” Jesus, a 29-year-old Venezuelan, said to the NYT. He arrived in the U.S. in 2024 and was detained for some time before being released. He now says he’d rather return voluntarily to his home country rather than be detained again.
The current crackdown is a major deviation from the asylum policies implemented in the past four years. The Biden administration expanded the CBP One app, constructed Safe Mobility Offices across Latin America and established the CHNV program — all of which streamlined migrants’ ability to apply for asylum and enter the U.S. en masse before the Trump administration scrapped or defunded them all.
More than 18 million illegal migrants are estimated to be living in the U.S., according to the most recent study released by the Federation for American Immigration Reform. Those new figures were released after 8.5 million migrant encounters were recorded along the U.S.-Mexico border during the four fiscal years of the Biden administration.
The Biden White House oversaw the worst humanitarian crisis at the southern border in history, with fiscal years 2023 and 2024 being the highest and second highest, respectively, of recorded migrant encounters, according to Customs and Border Protection data. Before Biden finally issued an election-year directive that began a slowdown of encounters, millions of illegal migrants had already entered the country.
After winning election to a second term in an electoral landslide, in part on a pledge to crack down on the illegal immigration crisis, President Donald Trump got to work on enforcement reforms. The Trump administration deployed troops at the southern border, successfully coerced Canada and Mexico to put more effort into border security and designated a number of transnational gangs and cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
Trump also threw the hammer down on interior enforcement, successfully pushing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to apprehend tens of thousands of illegal migrants in the first months of his administration. The ICE arrests, which far surpass the rate of the previous administration, included convicted criminals and gangbangers loyal to Tren de Aragua, MS-13 and other ruthless crime syndicates.
In an unprecedented agreement, the Trump administration reached a deal with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele allowing U.S. authorities to transport criminal illegal migrants to the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), a mega-prison in El Salvador that has the capacity to hold up to 40,000 inmates. The maximum-security prison is not known for being a relaxing venue, where prisoners are packed tightly into cells, recreation and visitation are forbidden and cellphone signals are blocked.
While Trump fights a court challenge on his use of wartime powers to deport Tren de Aragua gang members, media attention has surrounded the Venezuelan nationals who were already deported to the mega-prison.
While Venezuelans see some of their countrymen be sent to one of the largest prisons in the world, the Trump administration is encouraging all illegal migrants to leave on their own accord. Earlier in March, the administration rolled out the CBP Home app — a relaunch of the Biden-era CBP One app that now includes a feature for illegal migrants to declare their intentions to self-deport.
“The Biden Administration exploited the CBP One app to allow more than 1 million aliens to illegally enter the United States,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem previously said. “With the launching of the CBP Home app, we are restoring integrity to our immigration system.”
“The CBP Home app gives aliens the option to leave now and self-deport, so they may still have the opportunity to return legally in the future and live the American dream,” Noem went on. “If they don’t, we will find them, we will deport them, and they will never return.”
Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian national student allegedly involved in anti-Israel protests at Columbia University, notably used the app to leave the U.S. after the State Department revoked her student visa. Foreign nationals in Chicago, Ohio, and elsewhere across the U.S. have also self-deported, according to the NYT.
The monumental push for self-deportation — and the subsequent signs of success of this effort — appear as a far cry from years past. When then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney touted self-deportation as a viable immigration enforcement plan during a 2012 GOP debate, he drew audible laughs from the audience. Other critics at the time blasted the idea as a strategy blunder.
However, under Trump’s unprecedented crackdown on illegal immigration, the policy appears to be all the more realistic.
Rather than go through the trouble of remaining on the run, one 23-year-old Venezuelan illegal migrant walked into a Detroit ICE office building in February and surrendered himself to authorities. The migrant reportedly told agents he needed to be taken into custody or else he’d go on to commit crimes.

The United States will pay a very low fee for them, but a high one for us.
Over time, these actions, combined with the production already being generated by more than 40,000 inmates engaged in various workshops and labor under the Zero Idleness program, will help make our prison system self-sustainable. As of today, it costs $200 million per year.
On this occasion, the U.S. has also sent us 23 MS-13 members wanted by Salvadoran justice, including two ringleaders. One of them is a member of the criminal organization’s highest structure.
This will help us finalize intelligence gathering and go after the last remnants of MS-13, including its former and new members, money, weapons, drugs, hideouts, collaborators, and sponsors.

Migrants who once flooded the U.S. southern border under the Biden-Harris administration are now using the Darien Gap to head home or travel to other foreign countries instead of heading toward the U.S.
The border crisis, which became a major issue for both former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris during their campaigns, saw record-high encounters, with officials estimating a total of 10.8 million encounters since fiscal year 2021. With the new administration tightening immigration policies, migrants are reportedly in a “reserve flow,” returning home through routes like the Darien Gap, according to the Associated Press.
One major route used to travel to the U.S. southern border, the Darien Gap—a dense jungle region—is now reportedly being used by migrants to flee from the U.S. border due to Trump’s efforts to secure it. Smugglers, according to AP News, are charging between $200 and $250 per person to transport people back through this “reverse flow,” including minors.
In Trump’s first month at the White House, both the U.S.-Mexico border and international crossing ports went quiet, with reports showing sharp declines in illegal migrant encounters. Since his inauguration, Trump has signed a series of executive orders aimed at ending taxpayer-funded benefits for illegal migrants, designating cartels and other organizations as foreign terrorist entities, and declaring a national emergency at the southern border.
Over the years, the Darien Gap has been a treacherous passage for illegal migrants due to the presence of organized crime and smugglers making as much as $14 million per day. Spanning 40 miles wide and 100 miles long between Panama and Colombia, over half a million migrants crossed through the Darien Gap in 2023, contributing to a record number of encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border that year.
However, in July 2024, Panama’s National Border Service, which functions as the country’s version of border patrol, reported a 9,000-person drop in crossings from Colombia compared to the same time the year prior, crediting their efforts to reduce illegal migration through the Darien Gap.
Along with his executive orders, Trump gave Border Czar Tom Homan and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem the authority to direct U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to arrest “criminal aliens,” including rapists and murderers.
But, according to AP News, not all migrants are returning home despite the stricter border crackdown; some are heading to other countries.
“There’s no way I’m going back to Venezuela. There are many of us who don’t want to go back. They are going to Peru, Ecuador, Colombia—just like before,” Celia Alcala, a woman waiting for a boat ride through the Darien Gap, told the outlet.
Since Trump’s inauguration, the president has pushed to fulfill his campaign promise of conducting a mass deportation operation and addressing the border crisis, with one of his first actions being the shutdown of the CBP One app. The app, which gained popularity under Biden, had allowed an estimated 166 million asylum seekers to secure appointments with U.S. immigration officials over the past two years, according to CBS News.
“When Trump arrived and eliminated the application (CBP One), all our hopes went up in smoke,” 36-year-old Venezuelan Karla Castillo, traveling with her younger sister, told AP News.
With mass deportations still underway, it remains unclear exactly how many illegal migrants were exactly allowed to pass through the southern border under the Biden-Harris administration. However, Noem estimated on Fox News that hundreds of thousands of criminal migrants have been allowed into the U.S. over the past four years, including thousands connected to gangs.

As the Trump administration continues to overhaul the country’s immigration enforcement apparatus, encounters along the southern border are bottoming out to levels not experienced in decades, federal data shows.
Border czar Tom Homan, who is spearheading the White House’s ambitious deportation operation, revealed Monday that there were merely 229 Border Patrol encounters along the U.S.-Mexico border within the previous day, a figure he suggested to be the lowest rate since he first joined the U.S. Border Patrol in 1984. A review of past Border Patrol encounters, which are encounters made between ports of entry, shows he’s correct — and the numbers haven’t been this low since the 1960s.
In the last 24 hours the US Border Patrol has encountered a total of 229 aliens across the entire southwest border. That is down from a high of over 11,000 a day under Biden. I started as a Border Patrol Agent in 1984 and I don’t remember the numbers ever being that low.…
If Border Patrol agents working along the southern border encountered 229 migrants every single day, the fiscal year total would equate to 83,585. If encounters continue to decline throughout the year, the final tally for fiscal year 2025 could be even lower.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) provides annual encounter numbers along the U.S.-Mexico border dating back more than half a century. Calculating the daily average encounter rate from the CBP data shows Border Patrol agents haven’t experienced average numbers this low since fiscal year 1968, when there were only 62,640 reported encounters along all of the southwest sectors.
While daily encounters fluctuate throughout the year, immigration experts say the recent drop in numbers is a clear consequence of the policy changes handed down by President Donald Trump.
“We’re seeing an unprecedented decrease in the number of encounters at the border,” Eric Ruark, research director for NumbersUSA, a Washington, D.C.,-based immigration organization, said to the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Obviously, that is a Trump effect.”
“There’s every reason to believe that we’re going to see historic lows when it comes to encounters now between ports of entry and people trying to sneak across,” Ruark said of future border activity under Trump. “The Trump administration is serious and they’re going to continue to be serious about not just talking about ending illegal immigration, but doing everything they can do to prevent it going forward.”
On average, the Biden administration was overseeing about 5,605 Border Patrol encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border every single day. The highest single-day record was broken on Dec. 18, 2023 when more than 12,600 migrant encounters were made on just that one day.
Since returning to office, Trump has undertaken an exhaustive list of actions aimed at controlling and discouraging illegal immigration, such as executive orders declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and ending birthright citizenship to individuals born on American soil to illegal migrant parents. The administration has defunded or entirely nixed Biden-era initiatives that promulgated immigration, such as the Safety Mobility Initiative, the CBP One app and parole programs for foreign nationals.
In the most recent action, Trump signed an executive order Wednesday that directs federal agencies to identify programs that provide taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal migrants and cease action. The order further prohibits federal funds from being used to promote sanctuary policies at the state and local level.
Soldiers deployed along the southern border have been able to assist Border Patrol agents and other CBP personnel with their mission, providing an added layer of security to stem the flow of illegal immigration and illicit drugs.
Many illegal migrants waiting in Latin America simply gave up and turned around after Trump was elected in November, figuring there was no hope of making it through under the new administration. That many migrants are not even bothering to attempt to reach the southern border is indicated in the incredible drop in crossings through the Darien Gap — a large jungle region between Panama and Colombia traversed by northbound migrants hoping to make it into the U.S.
The current border numbers are a far cry from the illegal immigration crisis that waged under the Biden administration.
There were roughly 2,045,800 Border Patrol encounters along the southern border in fiscal year 2023 and roughly 1,530,500 encounters in fiscal year 2024, according to CBP data. When including both Border Patrol and CBP encounters at ports of entry, fiscal years 2023 and 2024 were the highest and second highest in the country’s history, respectively.
Faced with tough re-election prospects and sinking approval ratings on his handling of the immigration crisis, then-President Joe Biden issued an executive order in June that limited the number of asylum seekers appearing before the border. That order began a downward trend in activity, but the numbers plummeted even further after Trump entered office and got to work on his immigration enforcement agenda.
“The actions taken by President Trump to secure our border and make America safe again have been nothing less than historic, including by reducing illegal border crossings by over 60 percent in his first week in office alone,” House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green said in a Wednesday press release. Green pointed to Trump policies for the downturn, such as the rollback of the CBP One app and the “fraud-ridden” CHNV program that paroled thousands of Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Venezuelan migrants into the country.
The administration’s border enforcement effort is “without question” the biggest crackdown in American history, according to Ruark, who pointed out that Trump’s second term will likely far outpace the immigration record of his first administration.
“You had a lot of people initially who weren’t really on board with Trump’s immigration agenda,” Ruark said of the president’s first-term staff. “That’s totally different in the second term, and these are people who, from day one, and we’ve seen the results, have come in and are putting in effective policies that are in line with what Trump campaigned off.”
“We have every reason to be optimistic going forward, so we’ve certainly been happy, but again, the big challenge is, ‘what do you do you do about all the people who are who are here?’” Ruark pointed out. “And that’s going to be, I think, a huge challenge for the Trump administration because you had anywhere from seven to nine million people who got in illegally under the Biden administration, and many of them are still here.
