‘Speak Their Language’: Insiders Explain How Trump Can Use ‘NeoCon’ Cabinet Picks To Advance MAGA Agenda

Some supporters of President-elect Donald Trump have been disappointed by his picks to fill out his new national security team, even lobbing accusations of them being “neocons” — but individuals familiar with the transition and the president-elect’s foreign policy record said those picks can be put to use accomplishing an America First agenda.

For Secretary of State, Trump tapped Sen. Marco Rubio, along with Rep. Michael Waltz for National Security Advisor and Rep. Elise Stefanik for United Nations Ambassador. The picks turned heads because they are viewed as having more “hawkish” beliefs. But national security insiders told the Daily Caller that the picks fall in line with the president’s agenda more than many would initially expect.

“If you take a look at what Trump is doing across his cabinet picks, he’s building the MAGA movement to go well beyond his Republican base, which is why he’s plugged in Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F Kennedy. He’s making a bigger tent, and that is the stuff of legacy,” Morgan Murphy, former press secretary to the Secretary of Defense during the Trump administration and National Security Adviser to Sen. Tommy Tuberville, told the Caller.

Over the years, Rubio’s more hawkish positions have shifted to fall increasingly in line with the president-elect’s “America first” agenda. Rubio voted against a foreign aid package earlier this year that included Ukraine funding, but is hawkish on China and Latin America. Waltz, a special forces veteran, previously worked for Vice President Dick Cheney and has expressed aggressive stances on Iran.

Tapped for Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth is the most unexpected of the president’s national security picks. Hegseth described himself as a “recovering neocon” in an earlier interview with the “Shawn Ryan Show” podcast, explaining that he was once a major supporter of the Iraq war but has since recognized the errors of his views.

The picks, particularly Rubio and Walz, have been attacked by some in the president-elect’s coalition.

“Yesterday was a bad day for those who endorse “America First” in our foreign policy,” former Republican Congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul tweeted. “With reported Trump appointments of neocons Elise Stefanik (UN Ambassador), Mike Waltz (National Security Advisor), and…Marco Rubio (Secretary of State), many who hoped that Trump 2.0 would be different than Trump 1.0 are feeling dejected and betrayed.”

“The wrong people are happy about Walz [sic],” tweeted New York Post journalist Miranda Devine.

Meanwhile, the likes of John Bolton, former Trump National Security Adviser-turned-critic, praised the picks as having “the correct approach to China.”

However, insiders who spokes with the Caller say the picks show that Trump understands what he needs to govern successfully this time around.

“Trump is now savvy about how Washington works, and likely knows he needs the neocons. They’re more entrenched in D.C. than America first. And there are just more of them. The only kind of foreign policy people that are harping on America first and have been consistently, there’s less than a dozen,” one former Trump national security official told the Caller.

“I think he may be looking at someone who speaks their language, who can help blend the two agendas,” the source added.

Sources explained Rubio was likely picked to be tough on China, something important to the president-elect’s agenda, and that it could’ve been a consolation prize for not getting the VP nod.

“I imagine the Secretary of State position was a consolation to Rubio. Everybody’s trying to strategize what the importance of [the picks] and what policies [Trump’s] putting in place. But I think the pick was more political than it was policy,” the former official told the Caller.

One insider told the Caller that while political consultants and the media speculate about what these picks could mean for Trump’s foreign policy, the source believes the president’s pick comes down to two things.

“Hegseth, Rubio, Waltz, Stefanik, what do they all have in common? They’re all friends and close to President Trump,” a former GOP senate staffer who worked on national security issues told the Caller.

“They know the foreign policy and national security space. The president knows that national security is the one thing you can’t get wrong. Look at Biden,” the source added.

They added that ideology likely wasn’t a primary factor in the selections.

“I think that ideology doesn’t really mean that much, whether it’s neocon or isolationist or Jacksonian or Hamiltonian. At the end of the day, Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, are going to test President Trump in some way, shape or form, and it will be up to Trump and his national security team to decide how they want to respond to that test,” the former GOP senate staffer told the Caller.

When it comes to Rubio’s priorities, Cliff May, the president of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told the Caller that he believes the Florida senator understands the threat being posed by China and Iran to the United States. He said he believes Hegseth was picked to be a “communicator.”

“He will need to sort of lead the effort in terms of messaging and communications and working with the President and with Congress to get the kind of military America needs in this century,” May told the Caller.

“I can see why he would not want somebody in charge who is a long time bureaucrat who says, ‘listen, this is all you can do. This is what you can do. I’m not fighting the bureaucracy. I’m going to speak for the bureaucracy.’ He doesn’t want another Lloyd Austin type,” May added.

Several sources predicted a “peace through strength” type of approach to national security, something Stefanik has promoted since being chosen as the U.N. Ambassador.

“Based on his nominees, I think Trump is building a FAFO foreign policy,” John Noonan, a senior adviser to POLARIS National Security, told the Caller. “We want peace. But if you F around with the United States, be ready to find out.”

Trump Chooses GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik As US Ambassador To UN

President-elect Donald Trump has picked Republican New York Rep. Elise Stefanik for the role of the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations (UN).

Stefanik is one of the first appointments announced by Trump for his incoming administration since he won this year’s presidential election last Tuesday. Trump’s team told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement on Monday that he was excited to bring Stefanik into his administration for the key role, citing her “strong” qualities.

“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump said of Stefanik, according to a statement provided to the DCNF by spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.

Stefanik expressed that she was ready and willing to take the position, according to The New York Post.

“I am truly honored to earn President Trump’s nomination to serve in his Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations,” Stefanik told the Post. “During my conversation with President Trump, I shared how deeply humbled I am to accept his nomination and that I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the United States Senate.”

“President Trump’s historic landslide election has given hope to the American people and is a reminder that brighter days are ahead — both at home and abroad,” Stefanik said.

Stefanik is set to replace Linda Thomas-Greenfield, President Joe Biden’s current U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Thomas-Greenfield has been in the position since she was appointed by Biden in 2021 and has decades of government experience.

Biden and Thomas-Greenfield have come under criticism for the way they’ve maneuvered the UN and its various agencies in recent years. For example, the Biden administration heavily supported and funded the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) — which provides aid to Palestinians in Gaza — in years prior, until it was discovered earlier this year that the agency was employing a number of terrorist-affiliated individuals.

The UN has also faced criticisms for some of its own decisions, such as allowing China and Cuba, both nations with heavily reported human rights abuses, to sit on the Human Rights Council.

Stefanik’s new role means she will depart the House of Representatives, leaving Republicans with an even slimmer majority in the congressional chamber. As of Monday, votes were still being tallied as to which party would take the majority going into the next congressional session.

Six Dems Vote In Favor Of Resolution Bashing Biden And ‘Border Czar’ Harris’ Failures

Six House Democrats voted in favor of a resolution condemning President Joe Biden’s administration and Vice President Kamala Harris for their “failure to secure the United States border” on Thursday.

H. Res. 1371 was introduced by Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik to formally condemn “Border Czar” Harris’ immigration policy after she was tasked with reducing illegal immigration over the southern border early in the Biden administration. The resolution passed the House with 196 Democrats voting against it and six Democrats joining 214 Republicans in favor of it.

Democratic Reps. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Mary Sattler Peltola of Alaska, Jared Golden of Maine, Donald Davis of North Carolina, Henry Cuellar of Texas and Yadira Caraveo of Colorado, voted in favor of the resolution.

The resolution was cosponsored by Republican Reps. Neal Dunn of Florida, Greg Lopez of Colorado and Mike Bost of Illinois.

“Kamala Harris, every elected Democrat, and their stenographers in the mainstream media will run from their record, but they can’t hide,” Stefanik said in a post on X. “House Republicans will hold Kamala Harris accountable for her role as Biden’s Border Czar leading to the most catastrophic border crisis in modern history.”

The Biden-Harris administration has overseen record influxes of illegal immigration. Since Biden took office, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has encountered nearly eight million migrants, with over 83,000 encounters between ports of entry along the southern border in June alone, according to CBP data.

During former President Donald Trump’s term, every month saw fewer encounters on the southern border compared to June 2024 numbers, with some exceptions in fiscal year 2019, according to CBP data.

The House resolution highlights Harris’ dismal immigration track record, pointing out that it took the “Border Czar” over 90 days on the job before she finally made her way to the southern border on June 25, 2021. The resolution also pointed out the surges in violent crime that have occurred due to the illegal immigration that has taken place under Harris’ watch.

The resolution brought attention to the innocent Americans like Laken RileyJocelyn Nungaray and Rachel Morin. All three women were allegedly murdered by illegal immigrants.

“Kamala Harris failed as Border czar leading to violent crimes, rapes, and murders of innocent Americans,” Stefanik said in a statement on X. “We will hold her and Far Left Democrats accountable.”

Trump Campaign Reveals Plans For 2023

Former President Donald Trump’s team announced their plans for 2023, laying out their “overwhelming” campaign strategy for the next presidential election.

The campaign is rolling out “top-level teams in early voting states” and expanding its “massive data operation” to “wage an overwhelming campaign that’s never been seen before,” the former president’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, told the Daily Caller.

Trump officially announced his 2024 bid Nov. 15 at Mar-a-Lago. Since his announcement, Trump has attended events with the Republican Jewish Coalition, America First Policy Institute, Log Cabin Republicans and the 14th Annual President’s Conference of Torah Umesorah.

He also attended galas with American Freedom Tour and Helping a Hero, participated in the Georgia runoff tele-rally, conducted numerous interviews and video appearances, and met with members of Congress, Cheung said.

Trump has released videos on freedom of speech, the Omnibus and the Jan. 6 Committee’s final report, promising in his first video that he would ban the federal government from censoring the “lawful speech of American citizens” in one of his first acts.

“There will be more policy related events and President Trump will continue to lead on key issues like [he] has done on free speech and the border crisis in the past few weeks. Additionally, more print, on-camera, and radio interviews with the press have been scheduled so President Trump can lay out his vision for the campaign and highlight Joe Biden’s disastrous policies that have made America less safe and less prosperous,” Cheung said.

Some polls indicate that Trump’s 2024 support has wavered with Republicans, especially after the results of the midterm elections. Some former officials from the Trump administration, like former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Vice President Mike Pence, seem to have expressed some degree of doubt over the president and his effect on the party.

“I think we’ll have better choices … than my old running mate,” said Pence. “I think America longs to go back to the policies that were working for the American people, but I think it’s time for new leadership in this country that will bring us together around our highest ideals.”

Trump’s 2024 plans were hardly mentioned on stage at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest, the largest multi-day conservative conference. Speakers like Fox News host Tucker Carlson and Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley refused to say if they would endorse Trump in a matchup against Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Some speakers told the Caller offstage that they would be endorsing Trump over a possible challenge from DeSantis.

“Donald Trump is the guy. He’s the guy. He’s the leader of the clubhouse. Ron DeSantis is great — great governor, my governor — but right now, there’s one person running. It’s Donald Trump. That’s it,” Republican Florida Rep. Byron Donalds said.

“Ron will be president one day. He’s a great guy, a great leader, but in this moment, President Trump has a unique ability to marshal the populist energy that can break through the corrupt establishment,” Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz said.

Trump also holds endorsements from Republicans, Cheung said, including Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, Texas Rep. Troy Nehls, Illinois Rep. Mary Miller, Ohio Rep. Mike Carey, Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Louisiana Rep. Clay Higgins, Alabama Rep. Barry Moore, Texas Rep.-elect Wesley Hunt, Ohio Rep.-elect Max Miller, Arizona Rep.-elect Eli Crane, Alabama Rep.-elect Dale Strong, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, Kari Lake and the New York Young Republicans Club.
