Just hours after the United States reaffirmed its neutrality in the Falklands dispute, the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz has arrived in Argentine territorial waters at the personal request of President Milei.
Milei has now issued an emergency decree for joint naval exercises with the U.S. right off the Falklands coast.
This has left the British government visibly rattled.

The Pentagon is looking at ways the U.S. can punish NATO countries for not supporting the Iran war.

Donald Trump’s Pentagon officials are examining potential measures to penalize NATO countries that have declined to back the Iran conflict, with reports suggesting this includes a review of Britain’s sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.
A source informed the Reuters news agency that various options are outlined in an email identifying certain NATO members who have refused to provide the U.S. with access, basing, and overflight rights for its Middle East operations.
One proposal mentioned in the communication involves reconsidering U.S. diplomatic backing for European “imperial possessions”, including the Falkland Islands. The South Atlantic archipelago is a self-governing British Overseas Territory that has been disputed by Argentina for decades.
Britain fought a war against Argentina in 1982 to maintain control after Argentine forces invaded the islands. Argentina’s current president, Javier Milei, is among Trump’s closest international supporters.
Britain initially declined to permit the U.S. to launch attacks on Iran from two British bases, prompting a fierce reaction from Trump. The Labor Government subsequently authorized defensive operations to safeguard British interests in the Gulf following retaliatory Iranian airstrikes. Downing Street made clear the U.K.’s position on the Falklands remains unchanged.
