‘Not The People We Need’: GOP Senate Candidate, Former Navy Captain Nukes Navy For Drag Queen Recruitment Videos

GOP Virginia Senate candidate Hung Cao, a former Naval Captain, lambasted the Navy during a Wednesday debate for using drag queens in a recruitment video.

“When you’re using a drag queen to recruit for the Navy, that’s not the people we need. What we need is alpha males and alpha females who are going to rip out their own guts, eat them and ask for seconds. Those are young men and women that are gonna win wars,” Cao said.

CAPT Cao: “When you’re using a drag queen…to recruit for the Navy, that’s not the people we need.

Cao was responding to a debate moderator’s question about a previous tweet in which he criticized the military’s use of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in recruiting efforts.

This administration has a growing obsession with DEI. It’s no wonder we have a military recruiting problem in our country and that will continue under Harris/Walz.https://t.co/5HUNq15uSj

“I just said what everyone believes as fact. When you’re using a drag queen to recruit for the Navy, that’s not the people we want,” Cao told the Daily Caller. “What we need is alpha males and alpha females who are going to rip out their own guts, eat them and ask for seconds. Those are young men and women that are going to win wars. Not drag queens.”

He was likely referencing a May 2023 Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) report, which found that the Navy used an active duty sailor, who was also a drag queen, as a “digital ambassador” to target potential recruits on social media platforms.

The Navy invited Yeoman 2nd Class Joshua Kelley, who goes by the stage name Harpy Daniels, as part of their Digital Ambassador initiative, which ran from Oct. 2022 until March 2023, according to the DCNF.

Cao’s criticisms coincide with a military recruitment crisis, as the Army, Navy and Air Force all missed their 2023 recruitment objectives by “historically large margins,” according to a Feb. 2024 DCNF report.

Cao was a career Naval veteran whose accomplishments included serving as an officer in charge of the Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Mobile Unit, balancing the Navy’s $140 billion budget in the Budget Programming Division and working with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, according to his LinkedIn profile and website.

He’s trailing incumbent senator and former Hillary Clinton running mate Tim Kaine in the polls by 10 points, according to a pre-debate Real Clear Politics polling average.
