Why Hamas-Linked CAIR Has a Problem with Memorial Day

Memorial Day, a federal holiday held the last Monday in May, is the nation’s foremost annual day to mourn and honor its deceased service men and women.[1]

The Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIRR) has a problem with Memorial Day. There are instances of inattention to the actual date of Memorial Day, unopposed criticism of the U.S. military on Memorial Day by some CAIR officials, and years of apparent indifference to the Day itself. Consider the following:

When is Memorial Day?

On November 9, 2006, CAIR issued the following press release:

DC: MUSLIM VETERANS TO LAY MEMORIAL DAY WREATH. The Muslim American Veterans Association (MAVA) will conduct a wreath-laying ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, Area 5 in Washington, D.C., on 11 November at 0700 A.M.[2]

November 11, 2006, was Veterans Day, honoring all U.S. military veterans, especially those still alive. CAIR apparently did not know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

I could not find another mention of CAIR and Memorial Day until 2014.

Memorial Day 2014

On May 22, 2014, CAIR issued the following press release:

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today marked the upcoming Memorial Day holiday with the release of a video featuring American Muslim veterans expressing pride in serving their nation through military service and sacrifice. In the 44-second video, three CAIR representatives describe their service in the Army and Navy:

“My name is Dawud Walid. I’m executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, and I served honorably in the Navy. “My name is Sakinah Mujahid. I’m on CAIR’s Minnesota board of advisors and I served 13 years in the Army. “My name is Wilfredo Ruiz. I am an attorney with CAIR’s Florida office and I am a former officer in the U.S. Navy. “American Muslims serve our nation’s military and have died for our freedoms.”

The video ends with the tag line: “On this Memorial Day, CAIR honors all who served our country.”[3] So far so good.

However, on May 23, Zahra Billoo, the Executive Director of CAIR’s San Francisco Bay Area chapter, tweeted that she:

“struggles with Memorial Day each year. How does one balance being pretty staunchly anti-war while honoring those who died in the military”

She also quoted Dawud Walid, who said:

If one dies in an unjust war in which we illegally invaded and occupied a sovereign nation, should that person be honored?[4]

Billoo also retweeted “hateful anti-American comments” by Remi Kanazi, a Palestinian poet, writer, and political organizer.[5]

It was reported that:

CAIR-St. Louis Executive Director Faizan Syed came to her [Billoo’s] defense, retweeting a message claiming that the U.S. army “often murders innocent women and children.”[6]

Other CAIR officials had no criticism of any of these comments.

Memorial Day 2015

Billoo “again slandered the U.S. military and said servicemen often ‘murder’ innocent civilians.”[7] CAIR officials had no criticism of this.

Memorial Day 2016

Billoo stated “that she is ‘proud’ to stand by her inflammatory comments.”[8] Later that year Billoo equated the U.S. military with ISIS.[9] CAIR officials had no criticism of this.

Memorial Day 2017

This year CAIR took a different approach to Memorial Day. On May 26, 2017, CAIR

…released a video message marking Memorial Day from Gold Star father Khizr Khan in which he urges all Americans to “recommit ourselves to unity, liberty, justice, and finally – to an end to all wars.[10]

CAIR must have considered this video as compensation for previous Memorial Day issues placing CAIR in a poor light, and as a years-long pay-it-forward, because in an internet search I was unable to find any mention of CAIR and Memorial Day until 2025.

Memorial Day 2025

On May 27, 2025, one day after Memorial Day, CAIR posted an article titled, “Honoring Muslim American Veterans on Memorial Day.”[11] CAIR was reaching back into the archives, because this article had been written by Craig Considine for the Huffington Post on May 27, 2013.[12] Why would CAIR post a Memorial Day article one day after Memorial Day? Perhaps because Considine’s article started out, “On May 27th, Americans will celebrate Memorial Day…” and whoever posted the article didn’t realize that it had been written in 2013, when Memorial Day was on May 27th.

Memorial Day 2026

Instead of trying again in 2026, CAIR apparently decided to lay low and ignore Memorial Day. On Memorial Day, May 25, I went to the websites of the following CAIR organizations: CAIR (National), CAIR California, CAIR Chicago, CAIR Michigan, CAIR Minnesota, CAIR New York, and CAIR Texas. At each website I took screen shots of the various webpages, allowing some overlap to show continuity, to see if there was any mention of Memorial Day on any of these websites. There was no mention of Memorial Day on any of these websites. Those screen shots, listed by CAIR organization, are found in Appendix 1.[13]

I also checked the Facebook page posts for these CAIR organizations on and around May 25. There was no mention of Memorial Day.

Conclusion

Is Memorial Day important to CAIR? Is it even relevant to CAIR? From what we have seen, the answer to both questions is “No.” So, here are some things to think about.

In 1919, Theodore Roosevelt stated:

We should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an American and assimilates himself to us he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birth-place or origin. But this is predicated upon the man’s becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American. If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn’t doing his part as an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. . . We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding-house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people. .[14]

CAIR touts itself as an organization representing Muslims in America. So, who are the Muslims CAIR is representing? Here are some considerations.

The majority of Muslims in the United States are not native-born Americans. A survey was taken between July 17, 2023, and March 4, 2024, and found that 59% of adult Muslims in the United States had been born outside the United States.[15]

Muslims in the United States are generally considered to be devout in their adherence to Islam, and the mosque is where they learn about their faith from imams. A 2020 study found some interesting facts about imams in the United States:

  1. Over half (55%) of imams had a BA, MA, or PhD in Islamic studies from an overseas university. Only approximately 6% of all imams had a degree in Islamic studies from an American university or institution.
  2. 68% of the imams were born abroad and 32% were born in the US. 78% of full-time paid imams were foreign born.
  3. Of those imams born abroad, almost half were from Arab countries, with Egypt being the origin of most Arab imams.[16]

So Muslims in the United States are going to mosques and learning their religion mostly from imams born outside the United States. And as I wrote about in an earlier article, there are some common themes being taught in those mosques:

  1. Hostility toward Israel and calls for its destruction;
  2. Hostility toward Jews and Christians and calls for their death;
  3. Great antipathy toward the United States;
  4. The lauding of designated foreign terrorist organizations and individual terrorists;
  5. Praise for the October 7, 2023, attack on Israeli civilians and the subsequent fighting by Hamas.[17]

And the doctrines of Islam are not compatible with the Judeo-Christian heritage of the United States. I wrote about this in a brochure titled Islamic Doctrine and Muslim Immigration to the United States.[18] I concluded:

How can Muslim immigrants assimilate into a society of non-Muslims toward which their religion teaches such hatred and violence, and the intent to destroy? The reality is that they can’t. That is why Muslims already in the United States seem to stay mainly socially separated from non-Muslim Americans. So, where does their “one sole loyalty” truly lay? As we can see above, it is not with Jewish and Christian Americans.

This is why CAIR has a problem with our Memorial Day.

Hamas-linked CAIR enraged after San Jose city council rejects mayor’s Qatar trip over Sharia misogyny

Hamas-linked CAIR is demanding that the San Jose City Council now submit to its “education” about Islam, which would be on the order of “Don’t believe your lying eyes, believe our smooth deceptions.” They’re enraged here again that people they thought were reliably Leftist — city council members in a far-Left city in a far-Left state — would be so “Islamophobic” as to notice Sharia misogyny. The Leftist-Islamic alliance is once again showing signs of strain.

The ferociously antisemitic Billoo has called upon Muslims to oppose “even the polite Zionist.”

CAIR-SFBA Says Islamophobia from San Jose City Council Members ‘Unacceptable,’ Calls for Meeting to Offer Education on Islam

by Ismail Allison, Hamas-linked CAIR, June 10, 2022:

(SANTA CLARA, CA, 6/10/2022) – The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA) today condemned Islamophobic rhetoric by San Jose City Council members related to Mayor Sam Liccardo’s planned trip to Qatar. CAIR-SFBA also called for a meeting with City Council members to offer education on Islam.

Mayor Liccardo’s plans to travel to the Qatari capital of Doha were rejected by the City Council through a 8-3 vote over alleged human rights concerns. The mayor was reportedly invited by authorities in Doha to attend Qatar Foundation’s Environment and Energy Research Institute from 11-13 June to learn about the institute’s water conservation efforts.

Some council members reportedly cited Islam’s legal code, the shariah, in their arguments against the mayor’s trip. One council member reportedly said she would be scared to go to Qatar as a woman. The mayor reportedly said there were elements of Islamic law in Qatar’s legal system indicating the state is unjust.

The city council has previously approved visits to Israel as well as Saudi Arabia, despite human rights allegations from numerous organizations.

In a statement, CAIR-SFBA Executive Director Zahra Billoo said:

“The Islamophobic rhetoric employed by San Jose officials is completely unacceptable. The arguments used against the Mayor’s trip to Qatar contain some of the oldest anti-Muslim tropes in the book, and the fact that the city council claimed to be concerned over human rights abuses while approving visits to serial human rights abusers Israel and Saudi Arabia is deeply hypocritical.

“We call on city council members and Mayor Liccardo to meet with representatives of our organization and the Muslim community for dialogue and education on Islam and to correct some of the misunderstandings apparent from this incident.”

Hamas-linked CAIR’s Zahra Billoo: ‘Know your enemies,’ oppose even ‘the polite Zionist’

Elder of Ziyon notes: “Billoo declares that practically every Jewish organization in America is an enemy of Muslims. Not only that, but any organization that supports a two state solution is an enemy of Muslims. She doesn’t call them out explicitly, but that includes J-Street, that includes Peace Now, that includes Breaking the Silence. And she explicitly says that Hillels, the ADL, the Jewish Federations and even essentially all synagogues in America are the enemies of Muslims.”

Will this speech herald a crack in the coalition between Leftist Jews and Islamic supremacist groups? Stay tuned.

Original video:

MEMRI excerpt:

“CAIR Official Zahra Billoo: The Two-State Solution Is ‘Laughable’; Any Organization That Promotes It Is An Enemy; ADL, Jewish Federation, ‘Zionist Synagogues,’ Hillel Chapters Will Throw You Under The Bus,” MEMRI, November 25, 2021:

American activist Zahra Billoo, the executive-director of the San Francisco Bay Area branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA), said in a panel at the American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) Annual Conference, which took place in Chicago on November 27, 2021, that the two-state solution is “laughable” and that any organization that supports it is an enemy. She told the audience that the Anti-Defamation League, Jewish Federation, “Zionist Synagogues,” and Hillel chapters on “our campuses” are not their friends. Billoo said that they will throw the Muslims under the bus. She further urged the audience to donate monthly to AMP, because if they pay U.S. taxes, this means that they financially support “apartheid” every month.

The panel was streamed live on the American Muslims for Palestine YouTube channel, and CAIR executive-director Nihad Awad also participated in the panel (see MEMRI TV clips 9208, 3536, 3701, and 5279). Attendees included Linda Sarsour (see MEMRI TV clips nos. 6935, 6808, and 6111), Lamis Deek (see MEMRI TV clip no. 3430), and Taher Herzallah (see MEMRITV clip no. 7071).

Zahra Billoo: “We need to pay attention to the Anti-Defamation League. We need to pay attention to the Jewish Federation. We need to pay attention to the Zionist synagogues. We need to pay attention to the Hillel chapters on our campuses, because just because they are your friends today, doesn’t mean that they have your back when it comes to human rights.

“So oppose the vehement fascist, but oppose the polite Zionist too. They are not your friends. They will not be there for you when you need them. They will take your friendship and throw your Palestinian brothers and sisters under the bus. Oh! You get along because you are all in Girl Scouts together? Talk to them about what is happening in Palestine, and see how that conversation goes.

“And so, when we think about Islamophobia and Zionism, let’s be clear about the connections. There is no difference between domestic policy and foreign policy when it comes to our human rights. There is no difference between domestic policy and foreign policy when it comes to those who seek to target us.

[…]

“By the way, you should be a monthly donor to American Muslims for Palestine. Build it into your budget and forget about it. Make it your monthly contribution, because you are contributing to the apartheid monthly. It is a part of your budget. You are paying your taxes, so you should be giving money to AMP monthly.

[…]

“The list goes on. Know who is on your side. Build community with them, because the next thing I am going to tell you is to know your enemies. And I am not going to sugarcoat that, they are your enemies. There are organizations and infrastructures out there who are working to harm you. Make no mistake of it. They would sell you down the line if they could, and they very often do behind your back. I mean the Zionist organizations, I mean the foreign policy organizations who say they are not Zionists but want a two-state solution. I am not a Palestinian myself, but it is my understanding that that is laughable. So know your enemies.”

The George Floyd Riots: The Leftist/Islamic Partnership in Action

The Unholy Alliance is emboldened and on the march. My latest in FrontPage:

The nationwide riots over the murder of George Floyd have offered new insight into the unholy alliance between Leftists and Islamic supremacists. Zahra Billoo, Executive Director of the San Francisco Bay Area office of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA), recently tweeted: “Non-Black POC, first and second generation immigrant Muslims friends in particular, what are you doing today to support #BlackLivesMatter?” Imraan Siddiqi of CAIR-Arizona tweeted out a video of a hijab-wearing Muslim woman kicking a tear gas canister toward police with the approving comment, “Drop-kick that tear-gas canister, sister.”

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, rioters were so grieved and angered by Floyd’s death that they spray-painted “Free Palestine” on the wall of a synagogue. And in New York City, a Muslim housing attorney is in legal trouble for tossing a Molotov cocktail at a NYPD cruiser during the recent riots in New York City. She is also a committed activist for the Palestinian jihad, having published agitprop spreading false claims of Palestinian victimhood.

Women’s March Replaces Anti-Semites with Another Anti-Semite

My latest at PJ Media:

It seemed like a positive development, which is rare enough coming from the Left. As Rick Moran noted at PJ Media Tuesday, “the Women’s March has forced the resignations of three founding board members who found themselves in trouble for explicit anti-Semitic statements. National co-chairs Bob Bland, Tamika Mallory, and Linda Sarsour stepped down, making room for 16 new board members, including three Jewish women, in order to repair relations with activists groups that couldn’t stomach the virulent anti-Semitism of Sarsour and the others.” But don’t break out the hats and hooters just yet: one of the new board members is another venomous anti-Semite, Zahra Billoo of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

According to IPT News, Billoo “matches – perhaps even surpasses – outgoing board member Linda Sarsour’s hatred for Israel and those who support it. Billoo at least is candid enough to admit she doesn’t think the Jewish state should exist (she has not mentioned other countries she wishes would disappear).” Nor has she mentioned the new genocide of the Jews that would inevitably accompany the destruction of the State of Israel. And there’s more: “She repeatedly has compared Israeli soldiers to ISIS terrorists. Being pro-Israel, she has written, is tantamount to being ‘pro-terror, pro-violence, pro-land theft, and pro-apartheid.’”

The IPT correctly notes that “criticizing Israeli leaders, or government policies, is not anti-Semitic. But rejecting even the idea of the state’s existence, is. It’s a view shared by the United States, Canada, the United KingdomFrance and at least 25 other nations.”

Amid numerous appalling statements Billoo has made is one in which she said: “I don’t think we can work on civil rights together in the US” if someone supports Israel, because the Israelis, she said, are “baby killers.” Nor has Billoo restricted her victimhood posturing and hatred to Israel; the Jewish state’s chief ally, the United States, has been her target as well. She has accused the FBI of recruiting for the jihad terror group the Islamic State (ISIS): “I’m more afraid of racist Zionists who support Apartheid Israel than of the mentally ill young people the FBI recruits to join ISIS.”

What’s more, despite the fact that the board members that the Women’s March dismissed came under fire for refusing to condemn the racist anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan, Billoo also holds the Nation of Islam leader in high esteem. IPT News reports that “she featured a Nation of Islam video on her blog in 2010. Seven months earlier, she felt compelled to share with her Twitter followers that she was “watching Farrakhan church speech, while at the gym.’”

There is much more. Read the rest here.
