Chinese Media Outlet 81.cn: ‘Taiwan Independence And Peace In The Taiwan Strait Are Incompatible’; ‘China Will Realize Reunification, And This Is Unstoppable’

On the January 23, 2024, Chinese media outlet 81.cn published an article commenting the result of the recent elections in Taiwan in which Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPPP) won 40 percent of the vote. The article said that despite how Lai’s victory, which angered China, was celebrated in the West, “the one-China principle” still holds. “Taiwan independence and peace in the Taiwan Strait are incompatible, and external interference will eventually backfire. The fact that Taiwan is part of China will never be altered, and the basic framework and direction of cross-Strait relations will not change. China will realize reunification, and this is unstoppable,” the article concluded.

“Recently, following the announcement of the election results in China’s Taiwan region, several countries including the US, Japan, and some European nations expressed ‘welcome’ and ‘congratulations.’ However, the international community stays clear-headed.
“The one-China principle is a consensus in the international community and a fundamental norm in international relations. The President of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis, recently reiterated on the social media platform X that the work of the General Assembly will be guided by Resolution 2758 and adhere to the one-China principle. In recent days, ASEAN, the Arab League, the African Union, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization have also reaffirmed support for the one-China principle in various ways. As of January 19, over 100 countries and international organizations have publicly reiterated their commitment to the one-China principle.”

“There is but one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory. The government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. This has been confirmed by UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and is a consensus in the international community. Based on the one-China principle, China has established diplomatic relations with 182 countries worldwide. The decision of the Nauru government to resume diplomatic relations with China further demonstrates that the one-China principle is a prevailing consensus of the international community.
“The Taiwan question is a core interest of China, a fundamental foundation of the political relationship between China and the US, and the first and foremost red line in China-US relations. The one-China principle and the three Joint Communiqués constitute the cornerstone of China-US diplomatic relations. However, as the US shifts its policy toward China from ‘engagement and containment’ to ‘competition and managing competition,’ it has repeatedly promised that it does not support ‘Taiwan independence’ while undermining the one-China principle through various means and promoting the internationalization of the Taiwan question.”
