Pregnant woman assaulted in Charlotte by homeless man labeled ‘danger to the community’

Police report indicated alleged assault happened outside restaurant

By Luke Tucker, WBTV, Jun. 17, 2026:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A pregnant woman was assaulted by a homeless man near a restaurant in northeast Charlotte this week, records showed.

The assault reportedly happened just after 3:30 p.m. on Monday, June 15, in the area of Equipment Drive and West Sugar Creek Road, right off I-85.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report alleged that the suspect — later identified as 31-year-old Paul Abdul Hicks — assaulted the 26-year-old pregnant woman and tried to kill her. The report said a 34-year-old man was also assaulted and sustained bad cuts.

The report indicated the alleged assaults happened outside a restaurant but did not specify which one. Several restaurants are in the area, including a Cook Out, Chicken Box Cafe and Dairy Queen.

Hicks was arrested the same day and was charged with the following crimes:

Documents showed Hicks was denied bond following his arrest, then again in Mecklenburg County court on Tuesday, June 16. He was appointed a public defender during that same court appearance.

A bond sheet confirmed that Hicks is homeless and had notes that said he has a “criminal history that includes violent offenses,” and labeled him a flight risk due to multiple fleeing convictions.

That same document also called Hicks “a danger to the community.”

Another court document said that if he were to later be released from jail, he would have to wear an ankle monitor, and would have a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew.
