The U.S. Constitution and Islam’s shariah “cannot coexist,” Robert Spencer told Newsmax on Sunday.

Spencer, who runs the Jihad Watch blog and is the author of “The Tragedy of Islam: Failure and Excuses,” told Newsmax’s “Sunday Agenda” that Americans should take seriously the debate over Islamic law amid controversy surrounding plans for a new mosque and Islamic center in McKinney, Texas.

“Shariah is an all-encompassing system of laws that covers every aspect of life,” Spencer said, arguing that it conflicts with constitutional protections and U.S. law. “It’s either going to be the U.S. Constitution or shariah, but the two of them cannot coexist.”…

Spencer said the potential for competing legal systems is precisely what concerns him.

“Islam is inherently political,” he said, contending that implementing sharia would result in discrimination against women and non-Muslims and restrictions on free speech….

Spencer warned that Americans should resist any effort — Islamic or otherwise — to establish a parallel legal system that would supersede U.S. courts.

“If we do that in the United States as well,” Spencer said, “it will be the end of the U.S. as a free society.”
