Florida terrorist sympathizer Atif Fareed caught on video

Alan Kornman from Florida based The United West reports, “Watch as Atif will not condemn his friend Sami al Arian‘s terrorist activity. Atif Fareed was a Character witness for confessed terrorist Sami al Arian Atif Fareed brings shame on himself, his family and his community.”

According to Discover the Networks, “In its investigation of Al-Arian, the FBI raided WISE headquarters and seized some 500 videotapes of conferences in which Al-Arian had participated, where funds had been raised to aid terrorism efforts overseas. One FBI surveillance video of Al-Arian’s fundraising tour of American mosques showed him being introduced as “the President of the Islamic Committee for Palestine … the active arm of the Islamic Jihad movement.”

On February 28, 2006, Al-Arian signed a plea agreement in which he agreed to plead guilty to a single count of conspiracy to “make or receive funds … for the benefit of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.” He was sentenced to 57 months in prison, (which included 38 months that he had already served). The judge who sentenced Al-Arian made reference to PIJ suicide bombings and told the defendant: “Anyone with even the slightest bit of human compassion would be sickened. Not you, you saw it as an opportunity to solicit more money to carry out more bombings.” Vis a vis Al-Arian’s claim that he had raised money for charities, the judge said: “Your only connection to widows and orphans was that you create them.”

“We caught up with the Chairman of the Longwood Mosque (a.k.a. American Muslim Community Centers) at their Eid al-Fitr celebration in Sanford, FL,” writes Kronman.

Kornman states, “Atif Fareed has a well documented past supporting self confessed terrorist Sami al-Arian of the designated terrorist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). When the PIJ was closed for business they resurfaced as the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) of which Atif Fareed served there as a Florida Director for 10 years.”

Kornman notes, “It is educational watching Atif Fareed repeatedly lie and then try to intimidate the interviewer at the end of the video. Facts unfortunately for Atif Fareed are easy to find and corroborate as demonstrated in this video. Atif Fareed finds himself on the side of terrorist sympathizers time and time again. From a psychological standpoint it is fascinating to watch Atif Fareed Never condemn Sami al-Arian, CAIR, or Hezbollah ideology. Atif Fareed did not categorically denounce the ideology that fuels these terrorist groups.”

“In Atif Fareed’s case the fact he didn’t condemn any terrorist activity or ideology is just as telling as what he did say,” states Kornman.

Florida Muslim accused of conspiring to aid al-Qaeda and join jihad groups waives bail hearing

Shelton Thomas Bell of Jacksonville, FL

Florida is mentioned in the 9/11 Commission Report fifty-six times. Eleven of the nineteen 9/11 hijackers either lived in or visited Florida. Mohammed Atta and two of the 9/11 hijackers who flew the planes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon trained at an airfield in Venice, FL. President Bush on 9/11 was at the Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, FL when the first plane struck the World Trade Center.

Floridians are hypersensitive to terrorists in their midsts.

“Fla. Man Accused of Training With Terrorists Held,” from the Associated Press, August 8 states:

A 19-year-old Florida man accused of conspiring to aid al-Qaeda and traveling to the Middle East to join terrorist groups in Yemen waived his bail hearing. Shelton Thomas Bell, of Jacksonville, is charged with two federal counts of trying to provide material support to terrorists. His attorney said Thursday there was no need to decide bail on federal charges because he is already in state custody on grand theft charges.

Bell is accused of stealing money and computers to finance his trip to the Middle East.

A judge granted public defender Lisa Call’s request that Bell be allowed to re-address the federal bail if anything changes in the state’s case.

If convicted of the federal crimes, Bell could face up to 30 years in prison.

Robert Spencer from Jihad Watch writes, “Yet another convert to Islam misunderstands his new, peaceful religion as involving violence against non-Muslims. There are no converts to Christianity who have misunderstood it as involving violence against non-Christians — so it doesn’t seem to be a general misunderstanding. Nonetheless, no mosque or Islamic organization in the U.S. has any program to teach converts to Islam to reject this understanding of Islam that they ostensibly reject. But government and law enforcement authorities don’t seem in the least concerned about that, so why should anyone else be? What could possibly go wrong?”

CAIR (HAMAS) seeks applicants for “Rosa Parks” civil liberties scholarship?

The Tampa based Florida Family Association reports:

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) plans to present a scholarship at their national banquet on September 28, 2013 named after civil rights matriarch Rosa Parks.

  • Rosa Parks was an African-American civil rights activist, whom the U.S. Congress called “the first lady of civil rights” and “the mother of the freedom movement“.
  • CAIR’s choice of a Christian woman to name their civil liberties award after appears hypocritical.
  • One of CAIR’s top agenda items is to defend Sharia law in the United States.
  • Sharia law contains Islamic doctrine that oppresses women.
  • CAIR did not select one of the many Muslim female civil rights heroes, such as Dr. Hawa Abdi or Gelareh Bagherzadeh, after which to name their scholarship.
  • Nowhere in Rosa Parks biography is there any mention of the words Islam or Muslim.

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) will hold their annual banquet on Saturday, September 28, 2013, 5:30 PM to 10 PM, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

ABOUT CAIR:

Omar Ahmad, Chairman and founder of Council on American Islamic Relations.

“Those who stay in America should be open to society without melting, keeping Mosques open so anyone can come and learn about Islam. If you choose to live here, you have a responsibility to deliver the message of Islam … Islam isn’t in America to be equal to any other faiths, but to become dominant. The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth.”  Omar Ahmad told a crowded audience of Muslims in 1998 according to a San Ramon Valley Heraldnews report by Lisa Gardiner. At the Islamic Association of Palestine’s third annual convention in Chicago in November 1999, Omar Ahmad gave a speech at a youth session praising suicide bombers who “kill themselves for Islam.” “Fighting for freedom, fighting for Islam — that is not suicide. They kill themselves for Islam,” he said as reported by the Washington Times.

Nihad Awad, CAIR Executive Director

The Investigative Project on Terrorism reports in part:Before helping to launch CAIR, Nihad Awad worked as public relations director for the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP) in 1993 and 1994. A 2001 Immigration and Naturalization Service memo documented IAP’s support for Hamas and found that the “facts strongly suggest” that IAP was “part of Hamas’ propaganda apparatus.”Awad publicly declared “I am in support of the Hamas movement,” during a March 1994 symposium at Barry University.

CAIR, whose former name was “The Islamic Association of Palestine” issued this March 1, 2012 PRNewswire-USNewswire report: “The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today released a community toolkit designed to assist those seeking to preserve America’s ideal of religious pluralism in the face of unconstitutional “anti-Sharia” bills that have been introduced in more than 20 states nationwide.”

Some provisions of Sharia law are antithetical to the rights and liberties afforded under the United States Constitution.

Muslims living in America should not be bound by U.S. law, according to an official of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who delivered the controversial message to a Muslim crowd in Austin, Texas.  “If we are practicing Muslims, we are above the law of the land,” said Mustafa Carroll, executive director of the Dallas-Fort Worth CAIR branch.  World Net Daily March 2013.

Two Florida families affected by Congressional probe of “Extortion 17”

Before there was Benghazi there was Extortion 17. Extortion 17 was the fatal mission launched on August 6, 2011 killing 17 Navy SEALS, 5 SEAL support personnel, 5 Army National Guard/Army Reserve helicopter pilots/crew and three Air Force special operations command members. Their deaths are the greatest single loss of life ever suffered by the U.S. Special Operations community in the 24-year history of the U.S. Special Operations Command.

The second anniversary of Extortion 17 is August 6, 2013.

Floridians Billy and Karen Vaughn and Scott Bill both lost their sons on Extortion 17. The Vaughns have become the face of Extortion 17 and have sought to learn the truth about what happened to their son Aaron. For their efforts the Vaughns have been put upon by several active duty Navy officers and some in the the SEAL community.

Like Benghazi, the official retort  is “nothing to see here, move on”. The Vaughns and other families are not moving on.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah)

According to The Hill, “Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee on National Security, told The Hill, “We’re going to dive into this.” Chaffetz said he met with the victims’ families about a month ago in what he described as an “emotional” gathering. He is poised to send questions to the Pentagon and may hold hearings on the matter.

Jeffrey T. Kuhner from The Washington Times asks, “Did the Obama administration put a target on the backs of members of Navy SEAL Team 6? This is the question that parents of slain SEALs are now asking — and rightly so. Forget Benghazi, the IRS, Eric H. Holder Jr. and the National Security Agency spying on U.S. citizens. Important as these scandals are, what happened to SEAL Team 6 could very well dwarf them. Our government betrayed America’s finest warriors.”

“Navy SEAL Team 6 became a household name for their role in killing Osama bin Laden. On May 1, 2011, the country rightly celebrated the death of bin Laden. The Obama administration, however, wanted to do more. It sought to claim full credit for the assassination, deciding to spike the football. On May 3, at an event in Washington, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. did the unthinkable: He publicly revealed the identity of the special-operations unit responsible for bin Laden’s killing. His reckless action put at risk the lives of every member of SEAL Team 6. The Taliban and other jihadists eager to avenge bin Laden now knew which unit to target. Stunned and shocked, SEAL members immediately realized they were going to be hunted by al Qaeda sympathizers,” notes Kuhner.

According to documents released by the Pentagon, Taliban fighters were assembling at the Extortion 17 landing site in what appeared to be a pre-planned ambush. On August 8, 2011 the Global Post reported, “The Taliban laid an elaborate trap for U.S. special forces last week when they shot down a Chinook helicopter during a night raid in Afghanistan, killing 38 troops including 30 Americans, an Afghan official said Monday.”

World Net Daily reports, “Among their many suspicions, the families question the sudden replacement of seven Afghan commandos on board the helicopter just before take-off. The seven who died in the attack are not the seven listed in the flight manifest. The families say, to this day, none of them know who those dead Afghans were. That leads the families to wonder if the original commandos may have tipped off the Taliban as to who was on board.”

The families of Aaron C. Vaughn and Brian R. Bill will hopefully get the truth about what happened. At least two Florida families may finally get answers and find closure.

EDITORS NOTE:

Brian Bill before his death appeared in the movie “Act of Valor“. Billy Vaughn has co-authored a book “Betrayed: Exposing the High Cost of the War on Terror“, which will be release in August.

Clare Lopez: Muslim Brothers in the White House! (+ Video)

Florida: Islamic bias found in high school history textbook

Creeping  Shariah reports:

Two Brevard School Board members are reviewing a world history textbook used in ninth grade Advance Placement classes amid concerns that it is biased in favor of Islam — at the expense of Christianity and Judaism.

House Representative Ritch Workman and individuals from two citizens groups spoke against the textbook, Prentice Hall World History, at the Brevard School Board meeting Tuesday, citing examples of phrases and passages they believe show bias.

“Our children deserve facts and accuracy, not history being revised for our own failure or desire to not offend one culture or another,” said Workman, a Republican from Melbourne.

The textbook, which has been used in Brevard for the past three years, devotes a chapter to Islam, with sections including the rise of Islam and the building of the Muslim empire. Conversely, Christianity and Judaism do not have their own chapters and instead are referenced in paragraphs embedded in other sections.

Workman also expressed concern about how historic events are portrayed and what phrases are used. For example, he said the textbook reads Jesus proclaims himself to be the Messiah but declares Muhammad becomes a prophet.

School board members Amy Kneessy and Andy Ziegler promised to review the textbook, which is published by Pearson, a well-known printer of educational textbooks.

“No matter what the subject is, whether it’s math, English, science or world history, students need to have accurate, unbiased information,” Kneessy said. “If textbooks are unbiased or incomplete, it’s our job to fix that.”

Pearson Spokeswoman Susan Aspey said the company and its authors adhere to “the highest editorial standards when creating course materials, which undergo a rigorous review process.”

“The textbook referenced was approved by the state of Florida and meets all requirements for the High School World History Course,” she wrote in an email. “A review of the book shows there is balanced attention given to the beliefs of Islam, Judaism and Christianity.”

Ziegler said the underlining issue is accuracy and fairness — and should be investigated.

“Jacksonville teen indicted for conspiring to Jihad terrorist plot,” by Paris Carerra for WOKV.com, July 18 (thanks to Pamela Geller):

The State Attorney’s office announced a grand jury indictment charging a local teenager for conspiring and attempting to provide material support to terrorists. He has been identified as 19-year-old Shelton Thomas Bell. According to the indictment, Bell planned to travel to the Arabian Peninsula, an alias for Al-Qaida and participate in “Jihad” activity. The indictment alleges between May 2012 and September of 2012, Bell and others participated in training and other preparation for armed conflict in the Middle East described as “the actions of Jihad.” Bell is accused of trying to gain the help of others, including juveniles to travel overseas. Investigators say he engaged in making audio and video recordings to be distributed to others once he arrived in the Middle East.

The case was investigated by the FBI’s Jacksonville Joint Terrorism Task Force. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison for both charges.

The Washington Post reports, “According to court records, Bell made video and audio recordings intended to be distributed to others once he arrived in the Middle East. The purpose was to solicit and recruit others there to participate in violent jihad, federal authorities said.” Bell grew up in Jacksonville and his parents live in the northeast Florida city.

FBI Orders Florida Medical Examiner to Keep Boston Bombers Friend’s Autopsy Secret

A Florida medical examiner’s office said Tuesday that the FBI has ordered the office not to release its autopsy report of a Chechen man fatally shot by a Boston FBI agent in May in Orlando, FL because of the federal agency’s active internal investigation into his death.

The medical examiner’s office said it completed the autopsy report on Ibragim Todashev, a friend of suspected Boston Marathon bomber, on July 8 and that the report was “ready for release.” The agent shot and killed Todashev on May 22 in his Orlando apartment during an interrogation related to the Boston Marathon bombings.

“The FBI has informed this office that the case is still under active investigation and thus not to release the document,” Tony Miranda, forensic records coordinator for Orange and Osceola counties in Orlando, said in a letter to the media today. Miranda said state law bars his office from releasing the report if an criminal investigation is ongoing.

The FBI and the Justice Department are conducting an internal inquiry into the shooting, but critics have called for an independent inquiry, questioning the blanket of secrecy surrounding the case.

The FBI and the Massachusetts State Police sought out Todashev after the Marathon bombings, but have refused to release details of the shooting. Media reports have provided conflicting accounts: Some said Todashev attacked the agent with a blade during an interrogation, while others said Todashev was unarmed. Another said he lunged at the agent with a metal pole or a broomstick.

Hack this: Researchers turn Verizon device into ‘mobile spy station’

As Florida Verizon customers are just recovering from the revelation that their phone records are being shared with the National Security Agency a new wrinkle appears. Verizon phones may be used as spying devices.

Verizon Florida is the largest cell phone carrier in the state. According to the Verizon Florida website, “Verizon’s powerful networks continue to meet the growing broadband, communications and information needs of Florida and Tampa Bay area consumers and businesses, as the company invested more than $347 million in its Florida wireline networks and information technology infrastructure in 2012.”

GEO Intelligence reports:

Security experts said they have managed to spy on Verizon Wireless mobile phone customers by hacking into devices sold by the US carrier, further fueling the controversy over privacy issues in the wake of the NSA leaks.

Tom Ritter and Doug DePerry demonstrated for Reuters how it is technically possible to eavesdrop on text messages, photos and phone calls made with an Android phone and an iPhone by using compromised Verizon products.

The hacking requires nothing more than a femtocell, which serves as a small cellphone tower to boost signal reception, which Verizon sells for $250; dozens of other carriers also offer the same technology.

The finding comes at a time of intense international debate about privacy after former NSA analyst Edward Snowden last month blew the whistle on a top-secret US surveillance program, known as PRISM, which has the capability to collect and store records on telephone and internet communications around the world.

The Verizon discovery, however, would put the power of spying into the hands of ordinary citizens, according to the researchers.

“This is not about how the NSA would attack ordinary people. This is about how ordinary people would attack ordinary people,” said Tom Ritter, a senior consultant with the security firm iSEC Partners.

Verizon announced it has updated the software on its femtocells to thwart hackers from carrying out a similar attack on its system.

Betrayed: The High Cost of the War on Terror

On August 6, 2011 Florida residents Billy and Karen Vaughn lost their son Arron when the helicopter he was in was shot down. Arron was a member of SEAL Team Six. Now Billy Vaughn has released his new book, co-authored by Major General (Ret.) Paul Vallely. The book is titled, “Betrayed: The High Cost of the War on Terror“. The book is being released in August.

betrayed book coverAbout The Book

August 06, 2011, 2:20 a.m.—Operation Lefty Grove is underway, a highly dangerous mission to take out another high-level Taliban operative, three months after the death of Osama Bin Laden.

In the pitch-black dark of night, twenty-five Special Ops Forces and a five-man flight crew board Extortion 17, a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. Seven unidentified Afghan Commandos are allowed to join them.

Ground forces have already been engaged in a three-hour intensive battle. Extortion 17’s specially trained warriors drop into the Hot Landing Zone to help their fellow warriors. But there’s a problem: the standard chopper escorts have all been directed elsewhere. Mission directions are unclear. Worse, pre-assault fire to cover the Chinook transporting our brave fighting men is not ordered.

Extortion 17 comes into the landing in this hot spot for terrorism. The Taliban shoots down the chopper.

There are no survivors.

Over the next few months as unsettling information on the tragic incident is released to the families, Billy Vaughn, father of one of the downed Special Ops warriors, becomes increasingly disturbed. He is told that the Rules of Engagement have prevented our brave defenders from protecting themselves.

Adding insult to injury, he later learned an Imam was invited to “pray” over their dead bodies. As they lay in their caskets before their last flight home, the Imam damned America’s fallen warriors as infidels who would burn in hell. The Imam boasted over their deaths with words such as “Muslims are the winners.”

BETRAYED: Exposing the High Cost of the War on Terror is a book Billy Vaughn still wishes he didn’t have to write. But his son is gone and there are still unanswered questions. He needs to know if finding the truth may prevent another father from standing in his shoes.

When this bereaved father meets retired Major General Paul Vallely, he finds an ally. General Vallely lends his expertise and in-depth understanding to this tragedy as the two describe in stunning detail the step-by-step events that led to the downing of Extortion 17.

Together they expose the military shift in policy from winning wars to “winning their hearts and minds,” which leaves America’s military in dire peril.

If not reversed, this failed strategy spanning the past two political administrations, will ultimately open the doors to our enemies on our own soil, leaving our country, our homes, and all our families unsafe.

Throughout the process of writing this book, several government officials have made it clear that they are not interested in the truth. When a high-ranking Military officer asked Billy to remain silent, Billy Vaughn asked him, “Sir, what kind of man do you think I would be if I was silent about the things that we have found out?”

Florida: Beware of the terrorists among us

Hezbollah flag.

Hezbollah (the party of Allah) supported by Iran is a terrorist organization that is fighting with the Assad regime in Syria.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, “Hezbollah is a Shiite Muslim political group in Lebanon with a militant wing the United States defines as a terrorist organization. With significant support from Iran and Syria, Hezbollah maintains an extensive security apparatus, political organization, and social services network in Lebanon, where the group is often described as a ‘state within the state’  … [T]he U.S. government considers Hezbollah a global terrorist threat and a menace to regional stability.”

In the report “Los Zetas and Hezbollah, a Deadly Alliance of Terror and Vice Terence Rosenthal writes, “When Americans think about the illegal drug trade and black markets in Mexico, it is probable that they do not associate them with terrorism, or Islamic fundamentalism. One would think that drug cartels like Los Zetas, the most sophisticated and second most powerful drug cartel in Mexico would have enough allies and connections not to need the assistance of an organization like Hezbollah based halfway across the world in Lebanon. However, there is proof that Hezbollah, as well as elements of the Iranian Quds force are functioning with cartels like Los Zetas, the most sophisticated drug cartel in Mexico. The combination of power hungry cartels like Los Zetas, and terrorist organizations like Hezbollah who want a presence in North America, in or near the United States inhibit U.S. companies from wanting to conduct business in Mexico, and should not remain unnoticed.”

Los Zetas beheadings.

According to the National Drug Intelligence Center known Los Zetas cells are in Miami, Gainesville and West Palm Beach, Florida.

The National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC) assesses with high confidence that in 2009, Mexican drug trafficking organizations (DTOs) were operating in the United States in at least 1,286 cities spanning all nine Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) regions, based on law enforcement reporting.

Moreover, NDIC assesses with high confidence that Mexican DTOs in at least 143 of these U.S. cities (see Appendix A) were linked to a specific Mexican Cartel or DTO based in Mexico—the Sinaloa Cartel (at least 75 cities), the Gulf Cartel/Los Zetas (at least 37 cities), the Juárez Cartel (at least 33 cities), the Beltrán-Leyva DTO (at least 30 cities), La Familia Michoacán (at least 27 cities), or the Tijuana Cartel (at least 21 cities). NDIC assesses with high confidence that Mexican DTOs will further expand their drug trafficking operations in the United States in the near term, particularly in the New England, New York/New Jersey, Mid-Atlantic, and Florida/Caribbean Regions.

Rosenthal notes, “Since 2005, Iran and Hezbollah have developed a presence in Latin America, opening 17 cultural centers, and forming relations with the Mexican drug cartels. 200,000 immigrants from Lebanon and Syria, many of whom are illegal residents, live in Mexico, and have established residence with the help of drug cartels like Los Zetas, the most technically advanced of Mexico’s drug cartels.”

“The lure of criminal activity and the drug trade, coupled with the presence of Hezbollah and Iranian Quds forces in neighboring Mexico present the United States with a major threat at its borders,” writes Rosenthal.

Was FL Senator Bill Nelson less than truthful about Benghazi?

Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) sent out a May 7, 2013 email reply to a constituent about the Benghazi attack. In the email Senator Nelson states:

Thank you for contacting me about the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which killed four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. I was one of the first to call for hearings to get to the bottom of what happened. I questioned members of the Administration as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and, more recently, as a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. [Emphasis added]

Senator Nelson was not a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee when he sent the email. He is currently on the Aging,  Budget, Commerce, Armed Services and Finance committees. On November 15, 2012, Tom Curry, NBC News national affairs writer, reported that when Senator John McCain (R-AZ) called for a special Benghazi panel, “A Democrat in the Intelligence Committee, Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida, flatly rejected McCain’s proposal: We have all the relevant committees, including the one that I sit on which is Intel. We’re having a hearing on that tomorrow and he (McCain) sits on the Intel Committee as ex officio (as the senior Republican member of the Armed Services Committee).”

Senator Nelson goes on to state:

The military’s initial response began within minutes of the first incident in Benghazi. An unmanned, unarmed surveillance aircraft was moved over the Benghazi compound. Secretary Panetta and Gen. Dempsey conferred first with the President, and then with senior officials including Gen. Carter Ham, U.S. Africa Command. During those meetings, Secretary Panetta ordered two fleet antiterrorism security team (FAST) platoons to prepare to deploy. The Secretary also issued verbal prepare-to-deploy orders for two special operations teams. In the 12 hours between the start of the attacks and the evacuation from Benghazi, DoD postured forces to meet any contingencies that might develop. The independent Accountability Review Board found that the interagency response was timely, and that no alternative or additional armed U.S. military assets were available within a timeline to be effective in Benghazi. [Emphasis added]

Testimony since this email was sent portrays a completely different picture of what happened in Benghazi. On the ground military assets in Libya were not deployed in a timely manner. Those assets in Europe and the Mediterranean that could have been deployed were told to stand down.  The handpicked Accountability Review Board included as Chair, Former Under Secretary of State Tom Pickering. Note the subpoena referenced in a letter to Pickering in mid-May by House Oversight Chair, Darrell Issa:

Your refusal to allow staff investigators to interview you is inconsistent with your commitment to be “tough and transparent.” I hope you will reconsider your position in order to assist the Committee in gaining a full and complete understanding of the ARB’s work, and to help us address concerns career State Department officials and others have raised. In light of your continuing refusal to appear voluntarily for a transcribed interview, however, I have found it necessary to issue a subpoena to compel your appearance at a deposition. This subpoena creates a legal requirement that you appear in room 2157 of the Rayburn House Office Building at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013, and that you answer questions fully and truthfully. It remains my preference for you to appear voluntarily for a transcribed interview, and if that should also become your preference, please notify my staff and I will consider lifting the subpoena.

Nelson’s letter concludes with:

Congress must do its part to ensure that Americans working abroad are safe from attack. Earlier this year the Senate passed legislation that I cosponsored allowing the transfer of $1.1 billion to enhance security at U.S. Embassies. I remain concerned about the spread of extremism in North Africa, and I assure you that I will keep your views in mind as Congress works to address these issues. [Emphasis added]

On May 16, 2013 Glenn Kessler from The Washington Post fact checked the underfunding of security for Benghazi and found, “During hearings into the attack last fall and this month, State Department officials were specifically asked if a lack of financial resources played a role in the attack. The answer was no.” A key finding in the ARB report was: “Security in Benghazi was not recognized and implemented as a ‘shared responsibility’ by the bureaus in Washington charged with supporting the post, resulting in stove-piped discussions and decisions on policy and security. That said, Embassy Tripoli did not demonstrate strong and sustained advocacy with Washington for increased security for Special Mission Benghazi,” Kessler reported.

Was Senator Nelson pushing the administration’s talking points? His email indicates discrepancies that he should have known about before he sent it.
