Victory Can Be Ours

If there is one thing that is true about elections in our country, it is that things can change very rapidly.

Nothing demonstrates this reality more than the campaign for president.  In the last 90 days, candidate momentum has changed at least three times.  But since Labor Day, there is no doubt that Donald Trump has gained momentum, with polling in almost every battleground state and nationally showing that he has closed the gap with Hillary Clinton.

In key swing states, such as Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Iowa, Virginia and Nevada, Trump has pulled either statistically even or slightly ahead.  And he has significantly closed the gap in a number of other key states, including a few that were not initially thought to be competitive such as Pennsylvania, Colorado, New Hampshire, Michigan and Maine.

The narrative that the media would have us believe, that Hillary Clinton has the race in hand, is not true.  In fact, some of the leading analysts and political pundits are admitting that Donald Trump has a better than 50% chance of winning.  This is a big change from predictions of just a few weeks ago.

This means that America’s law-abiding gun owners are in a position to stop Hillary Clinton, and we now need to put on a full court press to ensure that Trump voters are motivated to get to the polls on Election Day.

It means something else that is also important.  As Mr. Trump has improved his position in key states, we have also seen a similar improvement for several pro-gun Senate candidates.  Holding on to the pro-gun majority in the Senate is also critical, and the prospects for that outcome have improved in a very short time.

In states such as North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri and Florida, gun owners can make the difference in who controls the Senate.  This is critical to stopping Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) from becoming Senate Majority Leader, which would be a disaster for the Second Amendment.

The message for gun owners is clear.  Now is the time to pull out all the stops to work to elect our pro-gun allies.  We need to talk to our friends and family to convince them of the threat that Hillary Clinton poses to our liberties and that we CAN win this election from the top of the ticket down.

We face a serious threat, but we also have a huge opportunity to win on Election Day and advance our efforts to protect the Second Amendment for generations to come.

War on Terror or a War on Guns?

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, was in New York City recently on an official visit. Commenting on the bombs that exploded while he was in town, he opined that such attacks are now simply “part and parcel” of life in major urban centers.

In the last several months there’s been a great deal of talk about how to address this “new normal,” including the need for a so-called “no fly, no buy” gun sales ban, pursuant to which persons on secret federal watchlists would be ineligible to legally purchase firearms. Many groups, including the NRA, oppose such proposals for the use of “vague and overbroad criteria and secret evidence to place individuals on blacklists without a meaningful process to correct government error and clear their names,” resulting in law-abiding Americans wrongly being prohibited along with known or suspected terrorists.

The shortcomings of these watchlists work in the other direction, too, by being under-inclusive. Law enforcement sources confirm that Ahmad Khan Rahami, the suspect charged in the recent New Jersey and New York City bombings, was not placed on any government terror watchlist, although he had been reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and flagged by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in 2014. After conducting an “assessment,” the FBI took no additional action in his matter. But even assuming that a “no-fly” gun ban had been in effect prior to these bombings, such bans focus on gun sales and have questionable preventative value when the weapons of choice are homemade bombs and explosive devices assembled using “over the counter” materials.

In the aftermath of the Orlando nightclub shootings by homegrown jihadist Omar Mateen, both President Obama and Hillary Clinton were quick to call for greater gun control. Here, too, it’s illuminating to examine the existing allegations concerning Rahami. The FBI’s interest in Rahami was prompted by an investigation by local law enforcement. Documents show Ahmad K. Rahami was arrested in 2014 on charges related to stabbing a relative and possessing a firearm “with a purpose to use it unlawfully against… another,” in violation of New Jersey law.

The warrant contains the police officer’s conclusion that there is “reason to believe that the [arrestee] is a danger to himself [and] others.” As it happens, New Jersey is notorious for its draconian gun laws, which featured in several high-profile prosecutions of otherwise law-abiding concealed carry permit-holders like Shaneen AllenBrian Fletcher, and many others, all of whom faced conviction on second degree felony charges with a three-year mandatory minimum prison term, for possessing legal handguns for self-defense. Like those offenses, the gun violation cited in the warrant is a second degree crime. However, it appears Rahami was not prosecuted on these charges after a grand jury declined to indict him

It’s true that much of the facts involving Rahami remain unknown at this time. What is increasingly apparent, though, is that overbroad watchlist bans, hampering the ability of law-abiding “good guys” to possess and carry guns, is not the answer to stopping domestic terror threats.  Now more than ever, our laws need to empower honest citizens to be able to fully exercise their God-given right to self-defense.

Hillary Clinton Labels Americans ‘Deplorable’ and ‘Irredeemable’

If there’s one quality any aspiring president should have, it should be a love for America. And not just the America that supports that person’s candidacy, but the whole melting pot of people, backgrounds, cultures, and viewpoints that make up this great nation.

On the other hand, hatred for America, or any significant part of it, should be a disqualifier.

That’s just common sense.

Even by that modest standard, Hillary Clinton has disqualified herself from occupying the White House. Over this past week, we have seen and heard Clinton and her apologists slam millions upon millions of Americans in the strongest possible terms. And the condemnation comes not because of anything these people have done (the vast majority of them are indisputably law-abiding, hard-working, and family-oriented), but simply because of their personal beliefs.

We have often said that Clinton, notorious amongst Americans of all stripes for her dishonesty, feels most at home when addressing the elite who fund her political ambitions. And so last Friday night, before an adoring crowd at yet another fundraiser (this one in lower Manhattan), Hillary Clinton displayed her true colors in the most unmistakable terms.

Right from the start, Hillary’s remarks at the fundraiser attempted to drive a wedge between her audience and the supporters of her opponent, Donald Trump. “I am all that stands between you and the apocalypse,” she told them. She then went on to accuse Mr. Trump (without explanation) of “coz[ying] up to white supremacists.”

But she was far from finished. Clinton went on to say, “you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” because of what she described as their “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic” views. “Now,” she continued, “some of those folks – they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America.”

For those who are not used to being slandered by a Yale-educated lawyer, the Oxford English Dictionary onlinedefines “deplorable” to mean “grievous, miserable, wretched.”

Clinton didn’t elaborate on when a person’s views crossed the line from simple conservatism into one of her “deplorable” categories, but based on her past comments regarding America’s gun owners, there is little doubt that she would place them in the “basket of deplorables.”

Speaking at a televised “town hall” meeting in June 2014, Clinton endorsed bans on so-called “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” magazines. Referring to those who opposed such measures, she said, “We cannot let a minority of people, and that’s what it is, it is a minority of people, hold a viewpoint that terrorizes the majority of people.”

Notably, Clinton didn’t just condemn the ownership of modern rifles and their magazines. She went further, claiming that what “terrorizes” America is a “viewpoint” that diverges from hers. This “minority” viewpoint is not just ill-advised or misinformed, in her estimation. Rather, it “cannot” be tolerated at all. It is, in short, “deplorable” and “irredeemable” to the woman who would be president of the United States.

Florida Restaurateur Shows his Support for Trump local paper calls it ‘controversial’?

I have written that Donald J. Trump began a campaign for the GOP nomination for President of the United States. That campaign turned into a movement and is now an insurgency against establishment politicians and politics in both parties.

Examples of pro-Trump signs are showing up at businesses across the nation. Florida is no exception.

This battle ground state is key to winning the White House on November 8th. Whoever takes Florida will most likely take the election.

Note the word “controversial” on this screen shot. Photo: Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune’s Adam Cellini in a column titled “Barnacle Bill’s posts controversial text on billboard” writes:

The new marquee at Barnacle Bill’s on North Tamiami Trail reads “NRA member, concealed carry OK, I am a deplorable, vote Trump.”

Restaurant owner William Davis says he doesn’t usually take such a public position, but he plans on leaving this message up until the election is over.

“If you’re going to make a statement, you got to go all the way,” says Davis.

From now until election day, William Davis wants other “deplorables” to know they’re welcome at Barnacle Bill’s on North Tamiami Trail.

Davis posted the political message Tuesday after Hillary Clinton used the phrase “basket of deplorables” to describe half of Trump supporters at a recent fundraiser — something which she later said was “grossly generalistic.”

“I got rather upset when I heard that comment from Hillary, and I just felt I had to take a stand and let people know where I stood,” says Davis

Question: Why did the editor of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune use the word “controversial” in the title of Cellini’s article?

What is controversial about supporting a candidate. What is controversial about supporting the Second Amendment? What is controversial about concealed carry permit holders bringing their firearm to Barnacle Bill’s restaurant?

Answer: Nothing, unless you are a supporter of Hillary Clinton, hate the Second Amendment and fear other people carrying their gun, legally, into Barnacle Bill’s restaurant.

Cellini went out of his way to find someone who supported the anti-Trump bent of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Well he found John Hanlon who eats at Barnacle Bill’s every week. Well we Googled John Hanlon and Sarasota Herald-Tribune and found that Mr. Hanlon has contributed to the news paper and has been mentioned by the paper in other columns.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune has fallen into the trap set by Mr. Davis, the owner of Barnacle Bill’s restaurant. The SH-T has given the Donald Trump campaign free publicity.

Trump currently leads in Florida by 3 percentage points according to CNN. The SH-T article may very well solidify that lead.

Torchbearer – Film Trailer

Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson stars in another type of film, one that promotes America’s morality and values. In an email Robertson writes:

I just finished a powerful film with Citizens United called Torchbearer.

It’s about how America’s Godly values made our nation great, and how turning our back on them will lead us to ruin.

You may watch the new trailer below:

Robertson notes:

Those trying to drive faith from our society, whitewash our history, and lie about what we believe are not many — but they’re loud. It’s time to drown them out.

We can do it by building a movement of courageous Americans who value the Constitution and our shared Judeo-Christian principles, and are willing to engage in the debates of our times.

I hope that Torchbearer will help to provide the necessary spark.

But Citizens United needs your help to cut through the noise and get the word out.

You can bet that the media will howl about this movie. But that’s just fine with me, as long as I know that you’ll be standing there with me.

America would be nothing without our values. Let’s make sure to protect them.

EDITORS NOTE: Readers are asked to please watch the trailer for Torchbearer and make a donation of any amount.

Chicago Officials [Finally] Recognize Criminals Cause Crime

After more than five years in office, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is finally looking beyond his city’s gun control laws to stop the out-of-control violence in the Windy City.  After promising in 2011 to hire a thousand new police when he first ran for office, Mayor Emanuel has announced plans to recruit hundreds of new officers to address the city’s dire personnel shortage.

Chicago officials have also begun to admit that the recent spike in homicides is a crime problem – not a gun problem. Just this week, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson acknowledged that “as long as we fail to hold violent repeat offenders responsible for their actions, we’re going to hear the same stories of murders and shootings in certain parts of our city.”

Johnson blamed Chicago’s broken justice system. “It’s frustrating for [Chicago police] to arrest a guy on Friday for an illegal gun and then the next Thursday they see him right back out on the street with another illegal gun.” A police spokesman echoed Johnson’s frustration: “with nearly half of those we arrest for murder being repeated gun offenders, we need help to ensure these individuals stay off our streets after repeated arrests for guns.”

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez made a similar acknowledgment last week: “Criminals know and understand our system” and “tell prosecutors that Illinois gun laws are ‘a joke.’” She noted that the worst offenders “are spending fewer and fewer days behind bars for their violent and repeat felony gun offenses,” and that “an unexplained revolving door” is “spitting these convicted criminals out of prison after they have served only a fraction of their court-imposed sentences for violent gun offenses.”

The problem is exacerbated by a new policy the Chicago Police implemented through an agreement with the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois. The policy, which took effect on January 1st, requires officers to write a detailed report every time they stop a suspect for a brief investigation. This not only requires time-intensive paperwork, but suspects must also get a receipt indicating the officer’s name, and the time, place, and reason for the stop.

Under the new policy, street stops by Chicago police officers have dropped significantly. Less enforcement combined with weak punishment for violent offenders are driving Chicago’s surging murder rate. Perhaps the seriousness of Chicago’s soaring violent crime problem will cause the city’s leaders to abandon their pursuit of ineffective gun-control measures and instead focus on the actual cause of crime: criminals.

Overcoming Evil Anti-Police Rhetoric with Good

The myth that America suppresses blacks is a poison which has infected the minds of far too many Americans. Biracial NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick won liberal media praise and thumbs down from many Americans when he said he would not stand for our National Anthem because America suppresses blacks. TV reality show star black preacher, Jamal Bryant, wore a Kaepernick football jersey while encouraging his huge black church congregation to sit with Kaepernick in not standing for our National Anthem. Reverend Bryant is furthering the Left’s lie that blacks are suffering in a hellhole of racism called America.

The Democratic party, mainstream media, public education and Hollywood all promoting the lie that America suppresses and cops murder blacks birthed Black Lives Matter terrorism. The hate group feels justified in seeking revenge; physically attacking whites and assassinating police.

My three black brothers are Christians active in their churches. One brother who lives in Maryland said most Baltimore black churches have jumped on the hate-America-bandwagon and places the Democratic party agenda above all else.

My brother attended a conference of Baltimore black churches. One of the topics discussed was their concern that the federal government is redefining what constitutes a church. The consensus was after the election, they will need to hire lawyers to defend their right to practice their faith according to the Bible and keep their 501c3 status. My brother said the pastors and religious leaders in attendance know the relentless assault on religious freedom is coming from the Democratic party and will intensify if Hillary is elected. And yet, he knows the majority of Baltimore’s black pastors and religious leaders will vote democrat.

Never one to mince his words, my brother stood and asked, “Why vote for a candidate that you know you will have to hire lawyers to defend you against them?”

My brother said everyone looked at him as though he had two heads. He was scorned for sounding like a Republican. Clearly, far too many in the black church have a stronger commitment to the Democratic party than they do to Jesus Christ.

The same brother’s wife is a retired Baltimore police officer. He and his wife spent Labor Day at a cookout at the home of one of her longtime friends. Her friend is one of the black cops acquitted in the Freddie Gray case. My brother said everyone at the cookout passionately defended their falsely accused relative. And yet, they failed to see the connection between their police officer relative being falsely accused and the Democrat’s political agenda. My brother suspects that most of the guests at the all black cookout favor Hillary. He expressed his frustration with attempting to get these politically blind people to see.

Folks, what this all amounts to is evil; people sowing lies about whites, lies about cops and lies about America; the greatest land of opportunity on the planet for all who choose to go for it.

The Bible tells us that you overcome evil with good. That is exactly what I am doing this Saturday, September 10th in Daytona Beach, Florida. I am hosting a Blue Lives Matter Celebration event. If you can make it, please come. If not, we are LIVE streaming the show beginning at 11:00 a.m. on YouTube:

We have great musical performers, comedians, politicians, and highly knowledgeable speakers. Naming a few are Victoria Jackson from Saturday Night Live; Jimmy Labriola from Tim Allen’s Home Improvement TV sitcom; Congressman Ron DeSantis; acclaimed jazz vocalist Lisa Scott will sing the National Anthem; Heather Mac Donald author of “The War on Cops: How the New Attack on Law and Order Makes Everyone Less Safe”.

My brother was shocked when I informed him that some considered my event honoring police controversial. He said even before the Black Lives Matter lies and attacks on police, we should have been honoring police who protect us everyday. I said, “Amen bro. Amen!”

PEW poll: 44 percent of American households own guns

People who tell pollsters that they own guns: Now you see them, now you don’t. A new poll from Pew Research has found that 44 percent of American households own guns, up a whopping 29 percent from the figure reported in a poll conducted for the same organization two years ago.

Impressed by the incredible trend, the Washington Examiner reported, “more homes are reporting having a weapon inside,” while Bearing Arms said that the poll showed that there is “an increasing number of gun-owning households in the United States.”

However, what these polls really show is that folks shouldn’t put too much faith in polls. It’s no more true that gun ownership has risen 29 percent in the last two years than it declined 26 percent over a two-year period in the early 1990s, as Gallup polling found at the time.

The “decline” a generation ago just happened to take place right as gun control restrictions were being imposed at the federal level. As we explained in July, “Ever since the early 1990s, when then-President Bill Clinton pushed the Brady bill, the federal so-called ‘assault weapons’ and ‘large’ ammunition magazine ‘ban,’ and regulations that drove many gun dealers out of business, many gun owners have not identified themselves as such during the surveys.”

Gallup recognized as much, saying, “A clear societal change took place regarding gun ownership in the early 1990s, when the percentage of Americans saying there was a gun in their home or on their property dropped from the low to mid-50s into the low to mid-40s and remained at that level for the next 15 years. Whether this reflected a true decline in gun ownership or a cultural shift in Americans’ willingness to say they had guns is unclear.”

With President Obama unable to impose gun control during his last months in office, with Americans increasingly supporting gun ownership rights, and with gun control propaganda having been discredited by recent events at home and abroad, some previously cautious gun owners may now be willing to tell a complete stranger on the phone that they own guns. However, such complacency may change in a hurry, if Hillary Clinton is elected and begins using the power of the presidency to undermine gun owners’ interests.

At the end of the day, no one knows what percentage of American households own guns, and no one should know. Even in our present technological age, when some seem eager to reveal things about themselves to anyone who will pay attention, the rest of us surely can understand that there is nothing to be gained, but perhaps something to be lost, by informing complete strangers that we own something of value, be it guns, jewelry, a big screen TV, a stamp collection, or anything else.

If, for that reason, future polls show artificially low numbers of gun owners, as they have for most of the last 25 years, so be it. The only polls that count are the ones that are conducted on Election Day. If enough of us do our civic duty in November, the message we will send will be anonymous, but the whole country will it receive loud and clear.

Pro-Gun Members of Congress Respond to State Department’s Disastrous Manufacturing “Guidance”

This week, pro-gun members of Congress responded to the Obama administration’s attempt at backdoor gun control through the U.S. State Department (DOS) with strongly worded letters demanding corrective action.

In July, we reported on an ill-advised attempt by the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls of DOS (DDTC) to “clarify” who is a regulated firearms “manufacturer” for purposes of the Arms Export Control Act and its implementing rules, the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

As we noted in that report, DDTC’s “guidance” document creates far more confusion than clarity and threatens to chill lawful behavior and put small commercial gunsmiths who cannot afford ITAR’s heavy compliance costs out of business.

DDTC’s move is all the more egregious, considering the fact that the Obama Administration has for years pledged to remove most firearms and ammunition from ITAR’s scope, in favor of the more business-friendly jurisdiction of the Commerce Department.

This so-called Export Control Reform (ECR) initiative was originally aimed at “building higher walls around a smaller yard” by strengthening controls on America’s most sophisticated defense technologies, while reducing unnecessary restrictions and regulations on less sensitive items.

Firearms and ammunition – among the most common and least sophisticated defense technologies and technologies with obvious and legitimate markets in the private sector – were supposed to be the first categories to be moved over from DDTC’s jurisdiction to that of the Commerce Department.

But because of President Obama’s antigun politics, they remain among the last of the “munitions” categories to be amended. Meanwhile, as DDTC’s ECR website notes, the agency has already reviewed such categories as “Toxological Agents,” “Spacecraft and Related Articles,” and “Directed Energy Weapons.” For DDTC to suggest firearms and ammunition already present in tens of millions of American homes are somehow more militarily sensitive than those items is absurd on its face.

To make matters worse, DDTC has been building the “higher walls” on ITAR’s remaining items, meaning that the firearms and ammunition that remain under ITAR’s control will be even more stringently regulated than in the past.

Fortunately, pro-gun members of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate are aware of the problems and sent Secretary of State John Kerry strongly-worded letters this week expressing their concerns and urging DDTC to complete the process of Export Control Reform. Dozens of senators and well over one hundred representatives signed onto the letters.

According to the letters, “the last thing [the affected small businesses] need is an edict from the federal government imposing crippling fees and requirements which are wholly unnecessary and nonsensical.” They also ask for a specific date by which the administration will finish the process of Export Control Reform.

In the meantime, NRA is working with industry representatives on corrective legislation, should DDTC prove nonresponsive.

We thank U.S. Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) and U.S. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) for their leadership in this critical effort.

Stayed tuned for further updates on this developing situation.

Libertarian VP Candidate William F. Weld Continues to be Anti-Gun

As governor of Massachusetts, William Weld supported various gun control schemes, including a ban on semi-automatic firearms.  Unfortunately, and despite being the Libertarian candidate for vice president, Weld continues his anti-gun ways.

In July 2016, while NRA and other groups concerned with civil liberties were hard at work fighting legislation that would have stripped Americans of their Second Amendment rights without due process based merely on their placement on a secret government watch list, Weld expressed support for such measures.

In an interview with the Washington Post Editorial Board, Weld said of watch list gun control legislation:

I think the Susan Collins stuff looks good. I mean, it’s hard for me, uh, having proposed this super-duper task force getting bits of information from all over to say, it wouldn’t lie with good grace in my mouth to say ‘no, don’t use the terrorist watch list as a source of such information.’ So I would go with that.

In an August interview with Revolt.tv, Weld reiterated this position. When asked about what can be done “to control this flow of guns,” Weld responded, “you shouldn’t have anybody who’s on a terrorist watch list be able to buy any gun at all.”

At another point in the interview Weld characterized commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms and standard-capacity magazines as potential weapons of mass destruction. Displaying a level of ignorance usually attendant to politicians carrying the endorsement of the Brady Campaign, Weld told the interviewer:

The five-shot rifle, that’s a standard military rifle. The problem is if you attach a clip to it so it can fire more shells and if you remove the pin so that it becomes an automatic weapon. And those are independent criminal offenses. That’s when they become essentially a weapon of mass destruction.

Weld went on to suggest to the interviewer that both handguns and AR-15s are a “problem,” stating, “The problem with handguns is probably even worse than the problem of the AR-15.”

This latest episode reveals that when pressed on firearms issues, despite any assurances he has given to voters, Weld’s political instincts are to abandon gun owners and embrace gun control.

Bloomberg School of Public Health Professor: Take Granny’s Gun

Gun ban advocates, knowing their goals aren’t especially popular with the American people, have in recent years tried to couch their agenda in more innocuous-sounding terms. They don’t want to ban all guns, they’ll say, they just want to keep them out of the wrong hands. But once you start paying close attention to their claims, you realize that the “wrong hands” might be closer and more numerous than you think … and might even include the more senior members of your family.

Breitbart News recently pointed out that an “expert” who works at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) is sounding the alarm about firearm possession amongst the elderly. Perhaps not coincidentally, that “expert” also claims that firearm ownership is most common in America for those aged 50 or older.

Dr. Shannon Frattaroli of the Bloomberg School told New America Media that the typical gun control focus on crime and mass shootings leaves out the risks of firearm possession among older Americans. “[A]ny conversation about guns has to include a conversation [about] gun ownership among older adults,” she said. “There’s definitely more to be done on that issue in the United States.”

Frattaroli believes depression, frailty, dementia, grandchildren, and the risks of accidental shootings all counsel against senior citizens keeping firearms in their homes, as she claims, “they would harm someone coming into the home who’s not there for a home invasion, someone there for a legitimate purpose like a caretaker.”

One solution, the New America Media article suggests, is “competency tests for gun owners,” which would be similar to “requiring motorists to prove their proficiency behind the wheel as they grow older.” Another, according to Frattaroli, is allowing a concerned “loved one or neighbor” to obtain a court order to disarm gun owners whom the petitioner considers a risk to themselves or others.

It takes a true gun control extremist to paint Grandma with the same brush as others who are categorically prohibited from possessing firearms, such as felons or those who are addicted to illegal drugs like heroin or methamphetamine.

And while Dr. Frattaroli’s views may seem extreme, she is far from alone in suggesting the aged have a dark side that weighs against trusting them with firearms. Even the Social Security Administration, as we’ve reported, is looking to get into the gun control business by reporting certain of its beneficiaries to the FBI as “mental defectives.”

But lest gun control advocates like Dr. Frattaroli be accused of age discrimination, college students fair no better in their eyes. A spirited classroom discussion is likely to provoke murderous rage, they insist. And if academic debate doesn’t lead to homicide, they argue, binge drinking or other degenerate behavior surely will.

What about adults with children? Shouldn’t someone responsible enough to oversee the well-being of another human being be responsible enough for possessing an inanimate object like a firearm? No, gun control advocates argue. The safest course is for them to forgo guns as well, because the children will find them.

Perhaps single women, then? No, gun controllers will tell you, because they’re too weak to hold onto the gun and too incapable to use it if they do. They’d be better off with whistles to summon help.

Even in an age of advanced political correctness, apparently no stereotype is too offensive to be employed in the pursuit of banning guns. And when it comes to keeping firearms out of the hands of “dangerous people,” even the Bridge Club or the Shuffleboard League could prove just a little too high-risk to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

When History Repeats Itself: Gun Control Means Losing Control

On the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht 1938, when thousands of Jews were kidnapped and thrown into concentration camps, synagogues were burned, Jewish homes and businesses were destroyed, and Jewish property was seized, author Stephen Halbrook explained in his frightening Washington Times article “What made the Nazi Holocaust possible? Gun Control” that the simplest answer was the correct one: Jewish-owned guns were registered “and thus easily confiscated.”

gun control in the third reichThe Al Katz Center will host a series of lectures throughout September on the lessons of gun control for the Jews in Nazi controlled nations, as a German child’s eyewitness account describes:

The doorbell rang, and they came in demanding, “We are looking for weapons.” My father answered that we didn’t have any weapons.  They shouted back, “Get out….”  We went outside in the yard  – other[s] … stood around, just looked at us never saying a word … The mob finally left and we went inside ….

They had wrecked the furniture. Dishes, glass, and ornaments were broken …. I remembered the smell for years.

Another eyewitness of Kristallnacht lost her beloved father that night:

“At our house, the men searched my dad for weapons or something and then took him away.  We learned later that all Jewish men between 18 and 60 had been arrested,” including Louis Katz, father of Al Katz, for whom the Al Katz Center is named.

The schedule of lectures is:

September 11 – The 1931 Nazi takeover plot to deny food to Jews and to execute persons refusing to surrender their guns leading to German registration of all firearms and confiscation thereof

September 13 – Use of gun registration records to identify, disarm, and attack Jews and political opponents of the Nazis accompanied by mass seizures of guns and revocations of gun licenses; Gestapo ban of gun clubs, arrests of their leaders, opponents placed in concentration camps, and prohibition of firearm permits to Jews

September 20 – The new Nazi Weapons Law of November 11, 1938, two days after Kristallnacht, prohibiting all Jews from acquiring, possessing, and carrying firearms, ammunition, and stabbing weapons, under penalty of imprisonment for up to five years

September 27 – Jewish armed resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto, Sobibor concentration camp, and other sites, saving many thousands of lives, despite the fact that weapons were very scarce.

Signs of the cultural schisms and declining love of country that are the chief legacy of the Obama presidency are all around us. And while not the most serious, one of the most unfortunate and pathetic is that Americans can no longer agree that a fellow patriot’s gold medal at the Olympics is something to be celebrated. At least not when the gold involves pulling a trigger.

Nineteen-year-old Virginian Ginny Thrasher became the first gold medalist of the 2016 Summer Olympiad last Saturday, winning the women’s 10-meter air rifle competition in an upset over heavily-favored China, whose competitors in the event have six prior Olympic medals between them.

Ginny’s is a classic Cinderella story of a young athlete ascending to the top of her sport in her very first Olympic appearance. And while her stiffest competition have long been dominating international matches, Ginny’s first exposure to the shooting sports occurred only few years ago, on a hunting trip with her grandfather. Taking her first whitetail proved to be a formative experience for Ginny, as the then-figure skater began devoting her full competitive energies to marksmanship.

Fortunately, in addition to her grandfather, she had support and training from her father, who is retired from the U.S. Air Force. She also had ready access to firearm safety training and scholastic shooting programs at two public institutions, West Springfield High School and perennial NCAA shooting standout West Virginia University. During her freshman year last season at WVU, Ginny won the individual small-bore and air rifle titles, paving her way to national prominence and a place on the U.S. shooting team.

Ginny’s story could only be written in America, where firearms are woven into the fabric of ordinary life and where even a suburban teenage girl can find top notch marksmanship training and support right in her own neighborhood.

“I am so proud of being American,” she told ABC News. “I am so proud to stand on that podium, to listen to my nation’s anthem and to just be able to represent, and start off this Rio 2016 games on such a positive note.”

Now it’s no surprise that the chattering classes from abroad haven’t been as enthusiastic in embracing Ginny as the vast majority of Americans. Gun-hating Piers Morgan, a sterling example of why the British Empire has declined so precipitously, weighed in early with his mockery. “LEAST SURPRISING BREAKING NEWS EVER,” he tweeted, “America’s 1st Olympic Gold Medal is for Shooting. #Thrasher.”

But it’s disappointing that antigun politics prevent even some Americans from celebrating their countrywoman’s outstanding accomplishment. Wil Wheaton (yes, we checked, and apparently he’s a celebrity of sorts), reacted to Ginny’s win with this tweet: “America’s first gold medal in the 2016 Olympics was won by a teenager for shooting. Because we now live inside @TheOnion.”

The Twittersphere featured a number of similar comments, albeit many by people who have no public persona or whose public persona is even more obscure than Wil Wheaton’s.

And the Washington Post, in an otherwise relatively straightforward profile of the golden girl, nevertheless could not help commenting on her “menacing name” and “high-powered, German-made weapon.”

In that regard, the Post was wrong on everything except the origin of Ginny’s Feinwerkbau 700. While it was made in Germany, it’s basically a more sophisticated version of the pellet guns many American children grow up with and use to learn the fundamentals of safe shooting and gun handling. It is designed specifically for marksmanship competitions, not as a weapon. And propelling a .177 caliber pellet at a maximum velocity of 570 feet per second, it’s not even especially powerful by air gun standards. What distinguishes it most is its pinpoint accuracy at competition range, something that only really matters in the hands of an expert user like Ginny Thrasher.

Simply put, any suggestion that Ginny’s participation in elite shooting competition on behalf of her university and country somehow promotes a “culture of violence” or firearm-related crime is like suggesting that the Olympic torch should be faulted for contributing to global warming.

Indeed, a variety of shooting sports have a long-established history in the Olympic Games. And for good reason. Many traditional Olympic events are rooted in disciplines that have a martial pedigree, including biathlon, wrestling, boxing, archery, javelin, and equestrian events. Yet according to the International Olympic Committee’s charter:

“The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.”

In other words, the Olympics provide a forum for countries to contend with one another in contests of strength, courage, precision, speed, and skill, but without bloodshed and with the goal of mutual elevation, not conquest or subjugation.

That’s a pretty intuitive concept for most people to grasp.

As for Ginny, she’s not letting ginned up “controversies” interfere with the achievement of her Olympic dreams. You don’t become Olympic shooting champion, after all, if you are easily distracted. Rather than focus on polemics, Ginny said, “I just tried to focus on the competition.”

That’s what makes Ginny an international winner and an American success story.

And while most Americans will continue to embrace her as a hero, her detractors on Twitter will no doubt keep making fools of themselves, 140 characters at a time.

Czech President Calls for Total Ban on Migrants tells Citizens to Arm Themselves

President Milos Zeman also called for the Czech citizenry to be armed and for those who already own weapons legally to carry them in public.

The president of the Czech Republic Milos Zeman has urged his country to seal the borders to all refugees in an effort to protect the Czech Republic from Islamist terrorism.

“Our country simply cannot afford to risk terrorist attacks like what occurred in France and Germany. By accepting migrants, we would create fertile ground for barbaric attacks,” his spokesman Jiri Ovcacek said in a statement on Tuesday, according to Deutsche Welle.

“The president does not agree with any acceptance of migrants in the Czech territory,” he added.

The president has a stronger political role in the Czech Reublic than in other central European countries, but his power is still shared with the prime minister. He has veto power over legislation but does not set the legislative agenda.

Zeman also told citizens that they should arm themselves, despite previously having opposed an armed citizenry, in an interview with the Czech outlet Blesk.

“I really think that citizens should arm themselves against terrorists. And I honestly admit that I changed my mind, because previously I was against [citizens] having too many weapons. After these attacks, I don’t think so,” he said.

Comparing the Czech Republic to Israel, where he said “almost every man walks with a machine gun over his shoulder,” he called on those who already own firearms to carry them in public.

“These people will have to get used to the fact that their weapon can’t be hidden in a cupboard at home. Not machine guns, but a pistol, for example. And that [pistol], where necessary, will have to be ready for a situation where it has to be used.”

These comments show the changing tide of opinion in Europe towards refugees in the wake of the series of attacks this summer.

While there is no obligation on countries to prejudice the interests of their preexisting citizens in order to secure the rights of refugees, it is important that genuine refugees be provided for in accordance with the universal principles of human rights.

Balancing humanitarian obligations with the imperative to provide security for one’s citizens will become a tougher challenge the longer the refugee crisis and Islamist terrorism goes on.

Both a robust response to radicalization and terrorism in Europe from a security perspective and a concerted effort to integrate refugees from Muslim majority societies can help tackle Islamist extremism while providing the appropriate support to beleaguered migrant populations.

Standing up for the values of secular Europe and not exacerbating the issue by attempting to appease Islamists is essential for such a strategy to work.

If politicians are unable to do this, more and more people will turn to the approach of Milos Zeman and seek to block refugee access altogether.

Yet Another Record-Setting Month for Firearm Purchases

Hillary Clinton lies constantly, apparently, but numbers don’t. While Clinton thinks that people who oppose gun control are in the minority, and that campaigning for gun control will help her win the presidency, FBI data suggest that she may want to give all of that a second thought.

According to the latest figures, there were 16,026,760 firearm-related background checks conducted by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) during the first seven months of 2016, an increase of nearly four million, or 33 percent, over the 12,067,075 checks conducted during the same period in 2015. Additionally:

  • There were 2,197,169 checks in July 2016, 37 percent more than in July 2015 and more, by an even greater margin, than in any July in previous years.
  • July and June 2016 had the 12th and 13th highest numbers, respectively, of monthly checks since NICS’ inception in November 1998. That’s a particularly notable fact, because the summer months usually have the fewest NICS checks during the year.
  • July 2016 was the 15th consecutive month in which the number of checks set a record for the month. That is, there were more checks in May 2015 than in any previous May, more in June 2015 than in any previous June, and so on, through July 2016.
  • At the present rate, there will be over 31 million checks in 2016, 800,000 more than in 2015 and more, by even greater margins, than in previous years. However, as people increasingly pay attention to this year’s presidential contest and Clinton’s stance on gun control, firearm acquisitions may increase at an even greater rate over the next several months.
  • The average monthly number of checks since President Obama came out for gun control in December 2012 has been over 1.9 million, a 51 percent increase over the average in the previous months of his presidency.

The number of NICS checks doesn’t indicate precisely how many firearms are transferred, but the increase in checks has been large enough, over a long enough period of time, that Clinton and other gun control supporters cannot honestly deny that gun ownership is expanding. We said “honestly.”
