Border Patrol Increasingly Encounters People On Terror Watchlist

U.S. Border Patrol has seen a massive spike in southern border encounters with people on the U.S. terror watchlist between ports of entry, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) statistics.

CBP personnel came across individuals on the watchlist 78 times in those areas between October and August, the data reveals. There have been more than 2,000,000 migrant encounters on the southern border so far this fiscal year, a record-breaking surge.

CBP reported only fifteen southern border encounters with people on the watchlist between ports of entry in FY2021. No such incidents were recorded in FY2019.

President Joe Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to address migration’s root causes early last year, and she did not visit the southern border until more than 90 days later. Harris insisted in a “Meet the Press” interview released Sept. 11 that the border was “secure,” admitting, “We also have a broken immigration system and particular[ly] over the last four years before we came in and it needs to be fixed.”

Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz conceded under oath in late July that the southern border was in crisis. Texas Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar said Sept. 9 that the border was not closed, arguing the administration was “not on the same page” when it claimed otherwise.

The White House and CBP did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Sen. Marco Rubio Calls Out Migrants’ Lawsuit Against Gov. DeSantis: ‘They’re Not Even Here Legally’

The Florida senator criticized the class action lawsuit filed by three Venezuelan migrants Tuesday over the flight to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Alianza Americas, a Chicago-based network of migrant-led organizations and the migrants — Yanet Doe, Pablo Doe, and Jesus Doe — argued they were used “for the sole purpose of advancing their own personal, financial, and political interests.”

“Think about this, okay? People came into this country illegally, violating our laws and the first thing they do is get lawyers and use our laws to sue an elected governor, to sue a state,” the senator said. “I mean, just think about that. They just got here, they’re not even here legally, they didn’t enter the country the proper way, and they’re immediately in court demanding rights and claims under our laws. This is outrageous. What other country in the world would that even be allowed? What other country in the world would even tolerate that?”

“This is not immigration, what we’re seeing,” he continued. “This is mass migration. That’s a very different thing. But to just think about the fact that somebody just came here illegally and within a week they’re in court and they have lawyers representing them in court suing the American government whose laws they just violated is unbelievable. It’s outrageous. It angers me and it should anger everybody.”

The migrants alleged that accomplices acting on behalf of DeSantis and his administration “manipulated” and “stripped” them of constitutional rights protected under the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments. The accomplices allegedly pretended to be individuals offering the migrants humanitarian assistance.

“Defendants manipulated them, stripped them of their dignity, deprived them of their liberty, bodily autonomy, due process, and equal protection under law, and impermissibly interfered with the Federal Government’s exclusive control over immigration in furtherance of an unlawful goal and a personal political agenda,” the lawsuit stated.

Taryn Fenske, a spokesperson for DeSantis, said in a statement received by the Daily Caller Tuesday that the migrants voluntarily chose to board the two planes chartered to Massachusetts.

“The transportation of the immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard was done on a voluntary basis,” Fenske said. “The immigrants were homeless, hungry, and abandoned – and these activists didn’t care about them then. Florida’s program gave them a fresh start in a sanctuary state and these individuals opted to take advantage of chartered flights to Massachusetts. It was disappointing that Martha’s Vineyard called in the Massachusetts National Guard to bus them away from the island within 48 hours.”

Migrants received brochures informing them of their destination before boarding the flight to Martha’s Vineyard. The packets showed the location and offered a variety of resources on job opportunities and community services areas.

What does it mean for these other places across the country that are seeing influx? What does it mean to these small towns that Biden has dumped so many people in?”

DeSantis Responds to Sheriff’s Investigation Into Martha’s Vineyard Migrant Flight: ‘Give Me a Break’

Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis joined Fox News’ Sean Hannity during his Monday broadcast to respond to threats of criminal investigations against him for the State of Florida’s transport of 50 illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday. California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has called on the Biden administration’s Department of Justice to investigate DeSantis, while the Sheriff of Bexar County, Texas, Democrat Javier Salazar has also opened an investigation.

DeSantis was dismissive of the arguments against the move, telling Hannity’s audience, “Give me a break.”

He explained, “These were people who were basically destitute and then put in a situation where they could have succeeded, but that was all virtue signaling. And not only did they not welcome them, they deported them the next day with the National Guard. Give me a break.”

“You’ve had migrants die in the Rio Grande. You had 50 die in Texas, in a trailer because they were being neglected. Was there a freak out about that? No, there wasn’t,” he added, going on to describe the influx of criminal aliens pouring over the southern border into American cities.

“You’ve had criminal aliens get across that southern border and victimize Americans, killing some, raping some. Was there any type of outrage about that? No.”

Contrary to the assertions of Newsom and Salazar that the illegal immigrants were essentially dropped at the Massachusetts vacation destination for America’s wealthiest figures, he told Hannity that the illegal immigrants who volunteered for transportation there were well cared for. Hannity alluded that they were “put up in hotels, given accommodations. They were fed. They were showered. They were offered haircuts and any of the services that they were needed.”

DeSantis was quick to add, “Yeah. Not only that. They all signed consent forms to go, and then the vendor that, that is doing this for Florida provided them with a packet that had a map of Martha’s Vineyard. It had the numbers for different services on Martha’s Vineyard, and then it had numbers for the overall agencies in Massachusetts that handle things involving immigration and refugees.”

He then cited the availability of jobs and accommodations on the island. “So it was clearly voluntary, and all the other nonsense you’re hearing is just not true. And why wouldn’t they want to go given where they were? They were in really, really bad shape, and they got to be cleaned up, everything treated well, and then put in a situation — because, Sean, there are jobs available in Martha’s Vineyard. There is lodging available in Martha’s Vineyard.”

About a fifth, 21%, think it is reasonable.

hat if your bank shared what you spent your money on with the federal government? By law, banks and other financial institutions (like car dealerships, jewelers, pawn shops) are required to report certain types of purchases people make to financial regulators. What do Americans think of this?

A new Cato Institute national survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by YouGov finds that 79% of Americans believe it is “unreasonable” for your bank to share your financial records and bank transactions with the federal government. About a fifth, 21%, think it is reasonable.

Instead, and overwhelming majority—83%—think that the government should first obtain a warrant to access your financial records, while 17% think a warrant shouldn’t be needed.

Even in an era of hyper‐​partisanship, Democrats, Republicans, and independents agree on this issue. Majorities of Democrats (68%), independents (83%), and Republicans (89%) think it’s unreasonable for your bank to share your financial records with the government. Similarly, overwhelming majorities of Democrats (82%), independents (76%), and Republicans (87%) think a warrant should be needed first.

The issue somewhat divides a portion of the Democratic coalition. Americans who identify as “very liberal” were the most likely (41%) group to think it’s reasonable for banks to share customers’ records with the federal government compared with 26% of mainline liberals.  Nevertheless, strong majorities of both strong liberals (59%) and moderate liberals (74%) believe sharing what people buy with the federal government is unacceptable. Furthermore, the same percentage (86%) of both say the government should need to obtain a warrant before reviewing purchases people make.

The Cato Institute 2022 Financial Privacy National Survey was designed and conducted by the Cato Institute in collaboration with YouGov. YouGov collected responses online August 17 to 23, 2022, from a national sample of 2,000 Americans 18 years of age and older. Restrictions are put in place to ensure that only the people selected and contacted by YouGov are allowed to participate. The margin of error for the survey is +/- 2.39 percentage points at the 95% level of confidence.

Gun Safety: Good Mother in a Bad Neighborhood

No matter what country, state, or city you live in, every neighborhood has pros and cons. Most big cities in the United States tend to have “good” areas and “bad” ones, though it is unclear to me exactly what differentiates one from the other. What I do know is that too many neighborhoods are wracked by the (supposed) “gun violence” and abuse of gun ownership.

I had a horrible experience in the past, which made me realize that carrying a firearm for self-defense is vital. I have a 2-year-old child and we live in Tolleson, which is among the 10 most dangerous towns in Arizona, so I am fully committed to protecting myself and my family by arming myself and maintaining gun safety.

Regarding firearm safety and awareness, here are two important things to consider:

Care About Mental Health

DRGO released the story of a young woman, Shayna Lopez-Rivas, who was denied her Second Amendment rights just because she was seeking mental health help for an ongoing case of PTSD. As a rape survivor, this woman had already gone through many painful experiences, so she was simply looking to protect herself just like any other citizen.

Psychiatrist Dr. Robert Young, DRGO Editor [Ed: no relation], explains the importance of gun ownership very clearly. He describes the Right to Keep and Bear Arms using the words of St. George Tucker: “the palladium of liberty”. According to Dr. Young, owning guns is a basic individual right just like all other rights of the American people. He also adds that for society to be successful, it is the responsibility of the individuals to care their own safety and the safety of others.

Shootings are not only a societal problem, but they are also a matter of public health. Not just physically, as commonly held by anti-gun academics, but because they can deeply affect survivors’ mental states. At the same time, you should not want your child to hate or reject guns simply because of the risk of misuse. Teaching gun safety is much more effective than banning guns from the home or society. Every citizen has the right to own a firearm, and this right should not be denied based on someone’s mental health short of dangerous ideas.

Make Sure Your Child is Safe in Other Homes

When my child grows older and asks me to spend time at friends’ houses, I will support that. However, I will make sure that neither he nor his playmates come in contact with unsecured guns while they play. I will share my family’s safety measures and will discuss theirs with the playmates’ parents.

Sadly, many neighborhoods have been targeted for their endemic violence, which has led children and adolescents to poor life outcomes and self-perpetuating cycles of deprivation and crime.

In 2019, Everytown Research reported a study of 7-year-olds, showing that 75% of those who lived in urban neighborhoods had heard gunshots at least once, 18% had seen a dead body, and 61% worried that they might get injured or killed.

To prevent children from developing misconceptions about the use of guns, they must understand the deeper meaning behind gun ownership, which is instilled in the country’s Constitution. Parents have the responsibility to communicate openly with their children, explaining the importance of staying safe when using a gun and how they should behave when they see one. As per the US Constitution, citizens cannot be prohibited from firearm possession. However, parents should be aware that kids have a natural curiosity about guns, therefore lack of education about the matter may cost their life.

Parents should explain to children that if they ever come across a gun, they should immediately leave the area and find an adult. As they get older, conversations may be expanded to discuss the difference between gun use in TV shows and video games vs reality. A good way to keep the topic alive is by using the TV news as a starting point to talk about how dangerous guns can be and how to stay safe.

Among the debates about gun ownership, my focus is on the use of guns for self-defense. In particular, firearm use should be evaluated not by how many people have died in shootings, but by how many lives have been saved because of their defensive use, not even fired in 90% of cases. As a mother, I will teach my son that defensive gun use is much more than just owning and carrying a weapon. Successful gun defense occurs when crimes are prevented rather than when someone gets killed. Numerous studies have shown that defensive gun use is more protective than restrictionist anti-gun laws.

Concluding Remarks

Violence can shape the lives of children who witness it, leaving them living in fear that they will become victims. Showing that you are prepared to defend them reassures them that their lives are precious, that they will be kept safe. Teaching them the rules of firearm safety and shooting skills as they grow up encourages them to take their safety into their own hands, as we all must in the end.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said during a press conference Friday that “there will be more” flights and buses of migrants to “sanctuary districts” across the country to protect the residents of his state from President Joe Biden’s “reckless” southern border policies.

“I think what we are doing, [what] we need to do, is use every tool at our disposal to insulate the state of Florida from the negative ramifications of [Biden’s] reckless border policies,” DeSantis said in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Friday. “And that involves helping the transport; it involves suing on ‘catch and release,’ which we have done. It’s involved making sure that contractors are held accountable if they’re facilitating the north state. We have a statewide grand jury that’s looking at different types of practices that may be going on in the state that’s exacerbating the problem. At the end of the day, this is a massive policy failure by the president. This is a massive and intentional policy that is causing a huge amount of damage all across the country, and it’s all rooted in the failure to take care that the laws are faithfully executed and to fulfill his oath of office.”

The CEO of McDonald’s is speaking out about the crime crisis in Chicago and believes the lack of safety is keeping employees from returning to the fast food giant’s Windy City HQ in a warning to Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Chris Kempczinski spoke last Wednesday at the Economic Club of Chicago, where he says the violence has been a problem when trying to convince employees to come back.

He said: ‘Everywhere I go, I’m confronted by the same question: ‘What’s going on in Chicago? There is a general sense out there that our city is in crisis.’

Why Living Under the U.S. Constitution Is the ‘Greatest Political Privilege’ of All

This Constitution Day, let’s remember that it was this document and the system it created that put America on the path to becoming a beacon for the world.

September 17 is Constitution Day, the annual occasion for Americans to pay special tribute to the nation’s most important governing document.

On this day in 1787, delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed the Constitution. Once ratified by the states, it became the law of the land in 1789. British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone described it a century later as “the most wonderful work ever struck off at a given time by the brain and purpose of man.”

Gladstone was right. In the long history of national constitutions (some countries have had dozens of them and paid little attention to any of them), none approach the magnificence of what our founding generation produced in Philadelphia. Now the oldest written and codified national constitution still in force, it provided the most promising foundation for a system of human liberty the world had ever seen.

Was it perfect? Of course not, and the Founders never claimed it was. If they thought it couldn’t be improved, they wouldn’t have laid out a process for amendments or endorsed the first ten right off the bat (the Bill of Rights).

Did it take liberty as far as it could possibly go? For its day, it likely did. Certainly, it took it much further than any other such document. Its authors put both the spirit and the machinery of liberty in place and on which subsequent generations could build, if they chose to, an ever-freer society.

Critics will say that the Constitution did not prevent the massive growth of the central government over the past century or so and therefore, we must regard it as a failure. But has the Constitution failed, or have we failed the Constitution? The case for the latter is far stronger than the former. In any event, the Constitution is still there any time we decide we want to live up to it once again. I’m not aware of a viable alternative.

Calvin Coolidge’s words are as spot-on today as they were in 1923 when he said, “To live under the American Constitution is the greatest political privilege that was ever accorded to the human race.” For a short explanation of why the document is so extraordinary, see “The Genius of the Constitution,” as well as the recommended links at the bottom of this article.

On this Constitution Day, let’s remember that it was this document and the system it created that put America on the path to becoming a beacon for the world, the place millions try to get into every year. If we fail to honor it, or if we ignore it or trash it, we do so at our peril, as the following comments about it would suggest:

I join cordially in admiring and revering the Constitution of the United States, the result of the collected wisdom of our country. That wisdom has committed to us the important task of proving by example that a government, if organized in all its parts on the representative principle unadulterated by the infusion of spurious elements and if founded not in the fears and follies of man but on his reason, on his sense of right, on the predominance of the social over his dissocial passions, may be so free as to restrain him in no moral right, and so firm as to protect him from every moral wrong – Thomas Jefferson, 1801.

In a sense we’ve come to our nation’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.” But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we’ve come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice – Martin Luther King Jr., 1963.

I never thought carefully before about the clause of the constitution that counted slaves as three-fifths of a man for purposes of apportionment. Had they been counted as whole persons, it would’ve increased the South’s power in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College. Thus, rather than being a provision that disparaged black people, it actually was an effort to diminish the power of their oppressors – Bruce Bartlett, 2008.

In all matters but slavery the framers of the Constitution used the very clearest, shortest, and most direct language. But the Constitution alludes to slavery three times without mentioning it once! The language used becomes ambiguous, roundabout, and mystical…Why didn’t they do it? We cannot doubt that it was done on purpose. Only one reason is possible, and that is supplied us by one of the framers of the Constitution—and it is not possible for man to conceive of any other—they expected and desired that the system would come to an end, and meant that when it did, the Constitution should not show that there ever had been a slave in this good free country of ours! – Abraham Lincoln, 1860.

The Constitution made it clear that the government was not to interfere with productive non-violent human energy. This is the key element that has permitted America’s great achievements. It was a great plan; we should all be thankful for the bravery and wisdom of those who established this nation and secured the Constitution for us. Illegal Aliens Released Into the U.S. Under Biden Will Cost American Taxpayers an Additional $20.4 Billion Annually

According to a new cost analysis by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), providing for the needs of illegal aliens who entered the country under President Biden adds an additional $20.4 billion annual burden on American taxpayers. This figure is in addition to the well over $140 billion a year cost burden taxpayers are already bearing to provide benefits and services for the longer-term illegal alien population.

The Biden administration has willingly released approximately 1.3 million illegal aliens into the country’s interior after removals and Title 42 expulsions are accounted for. Add to this figure approximately 1 million “gotaways” according to FAIR’s sources within U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and it can be safely estimated that approximately 2.3 million illegal aliens successfully entered the country’s interior after President Biden took office.

Based on the most recent comprehensive cost study, FAIR conservatively estimates that each illegal alien costs American taxpayers $9,232 per year.

“Even in an age in which trillion dollar spending packages are considered modest, the additional $20.4 billion the Biden Border Crisis has heaped onto the backs of American taxpayers is still staggering,” noted Dan Stein, president of FAIR. “$20.4 billion could address some very important needs of the American public, instead of covering the costs of the surge of illegal migration triggered by this administration’s policies.”

The $20.4 billion that taxpayers will spend this year, on just the illegal aliens who have entered the country in the last year and half, could cover the cost of:

  • Providing every homeless veteran in America $50,000 per year for a decade. This would effectively end veteran homelessness.
  • Giving every family in America earning $50k or less a grocery voucher of roughly $410.
  • Providing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to more than 7 million additional needy families.
  • Funding and expanding the entire National School Lunch Program.
  • Hiring more than 315,000 police officers to combat rising crime across the country.
  • Hiring of 330,000 new teachers, which would easily end the long-standing teacher shortage in America.
  • Construction of nearly the entire Southern Border Wall (which could prevent millions more illegal aliens from entering).

“According to another new report, 35 percent of U.S. families with a full-time worker struggle to meet their basic needs. These are the people President Biden pledged to champion. Instead, he is choosing to divert an additional $20.4 billion away from their needs, in order to fund a radical open borders agenda with no end in sight,” concluded Stein.

Renee’s comments come as The Cape Cod Times’ Gwenn Friss in a September 14th, 2022 article titled Unexpected arrival: 50 migrants flown to Martha’s Vineyard, DeSantis takes credit reported,

A receptionist at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services looked up late Wednesday afternoon to find a group of 50 people – men, women and children – standing in the center’s parking lot.

[ … ]

The migrants thought to be from Venezuela were flown by a chartered aircraft from Florida and/or Texas.

Foxnews.com reported that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent two planes full of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard as part of his “promise to drop off undocumented migrants in progressive states.”

Just this month, Oklahoma has voted and passed a law that ALL drivers’ license exams will be printed in English, and only English, and no other language. Blake Masters: ‘We’re Remaking the Republican Party’ Because the ‘Establishment’ is ‘Out Of Touch’

Republican Arizona Senate candidate Blake Masters said the GOP is out of touch with ordinary Americans and described how he’s breaking from some “establishment” norms in an exclusive interview with the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Masters said Republicans, including himself, were in agreement about many key issues such as low taxes and low regulations, but that he’s more skeptical of foreign intervention and more vocal about crime and immigration than some of his counterparts. He spoke with the DCNF at the National Conservatism conference in Miami Sunday.

“I think I’m speaking more boldly about the southern border and issues of crime than a lot of establishment Republicans,” he told the DCNF. “I’m running on this America First agenda, that’s what I believe in, and I think we’re remaking the Republican Party to really implement that America first agenda. I think that the Republican party that Paul Ryan wants, that’s not the Republican party the American people want.”

Masters is running against Democratic Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, who is leading him by 47 to 45 percentage points roughly two months ahead of election day, according to a Sept. 9 Emerson College poll. The race has been labeled a “toss-up,” according to the non-partisan Cook Political Report.

The “America First” agenda, according to Masters, prioritizes the needs of ordinary Americans, and that means focusing more on domestic issues and less on foreign intervention. He also said establishment Republicans tend to grow disconnected from normal Americans during their time in office, which he said was driving growing support for populist strains of conservatism.

“Establishment Republicans tend to be a little bit too disconnected from the people. I see this especially in the Senate,” he said. “You stack a few six-year terms and suddenly you’re too disconnected from American life and what working class and middle class people are feeling. They live in a bubble, and the America first groundswell happened because establishment Republicans are out of touch.”

One key area were he’s distancing himself from the Republican establishment is foreign policy; he said he is a non-interventionist by default and believe the U.S. government should avoid military intervention when it’s not strictly necessary.

“I’ve been much more skeptical, for instance, about sending $40 billion to Ukraine,” he told the DCNF. “I would’ve voted no, I don’t think we should be doing that, and I think the Republican establishment is still more hawkish on that.”

The comments come amid an apparent rift between Masters and the GOP: the Senatorial Republican Super PAC, which is affiliated with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, pulled millions of dollars in ad buys for Masters in Arizona in August.

Masters didn’t directly comment on whether the funds were being withheld due to the perceived conflict between him and the Republican establishment, but said he was confident that necessary funds would come in from Washington, Silicon Valley and Arizona in apparent references to McConnell and tech entrepreneur Peter Thiel.

“This race is too close, it’s too crucial and it’s too winnable. I don’t know when the dam breaks but I think we’re gonna have all the resources we need,” he said.

McConnell’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

What Are the Top Abused Prescription Drugs?

The illegal manufacturing of drugs and counterfeit street drugs is a significant problem in the U.S. today. In fact, drug abuse can happen to millions of people with a legal prescription written by a licensed doctor and filled by a licensed pharmacist. But with more than 20,000 prescription medications approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the market today, it can be challenging to understand which of these drugs is especially prone to abuse. Here are some of the top abused drugs from that list.

Ranking Drug Abuse Is Tricky

Many factors come into play when determining how abusive a drug is. For one, we can rank drugs based on their dosage size or their overall potency compared to others. We can also compare drugs based on their drug class, deciding which drug class has a higher abuse potential than others. Some might suggest comparing substances by using the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)’s drug schedule list, which ranks drugs based on their addictive potential and medical use.

Another way of comparison is to take the statistics of drug overdoses and fatalities along with national drug use surveys to discover trends that occur with certain drugs on all lists. However, none of these approaches can provide us with a full picture. Many factors can contribute to drug abuse, including biology, family history, metabolism, and stress factors, which can vary from person to person.

Because of this, it is important to know that this list is not exhaustive or in any particular order. Instead, it will include the main prescription drugs that seem to check most, if not all, the category “boxes” mentioned above for abuse potential.

Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines were once the most widely used prescription drug in America. The drugs were developed and promoted in the aftermath of barbiturate drug use and were believed to be a safe alternative to treating a wide variety of symptoms, including anxiety, insomnia, muscle spasms, and seizures. These drugs suppress the central nervous system and produce a relaxing sensation of euphoria, similar to alcohol. Multiple kinds of benzodiazepines are on the market. Most people have heard of Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, and Valium, to name a few.

Each of these benzos varies in its onset of action (how fast it begins working) and duration of action (how long it works). Depending on what the symptoms are, a doctor will prescribe the benzodiazepine that best treats a particular symptom. Unfortunately, these drugs quickly gained a reputation for causing abuse and addiction that their forerunner barbiturate drugs had already gained. In fact, some medical professionals consider the benzodiazepine abuse problem to be an epidemic.

Opioids

Opioids have unquestionably been an epidemic-inducing drug in the United States over the years. Opioid use has been around for quite some time, including when morphine was used for pain management after surgery and battlefield wounds. However, the epidemic of opioid use is focused on the 1990s when OxyContin hit the markets.

By 2001, sales exceeded $1 billion, and Purdue Pharma, the company responsible for manufacturing the drug, controlled a third of the U.S. pharmaceutical market. However, the company has faced a relentless number of lawsuits for the abuse potential of this “poor man’s heroin.” Because of this, the popularity and prescription frequency of OxyContin has decreased dramatically over the years.

However, the abuse surrounding opioid use isn’t limited to OxyContin. Other prescription opioids include Vicodin (hydrocodone), Percocet, and methadone. In the era of drug cutting and accidental overdose, we must mention fentanyl when discussing opioids. Legally made and prescribed fentanyl treats severe chronic pain, such as that in cancer patients. However, illegally made or illegally diverted fentanyl sold on the streets is often added to heroin, making the combination drug deadly to users.

Stimulants

Prescription stimulants are another commonly abused drug. Prescription stimulants include the drugs Adderall and Ritalin, and they work differently from central nervous system (CNS) depressants. Stimulants increase activity in the central nervous system, so they commonly increase energy and focus rather than relaxation. This makes prescription stimulants an effective treatment option for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

When compared to benzos and opioids, prescription stimulants are not as closely related to overdose death statistics, although they can cause deadly results when mixed with other drugs. With that said, prescription stimulants can cause addiction and dependence, and many people who abuse these drugs can experience poor sleep habits and a decline in nutritional habits. Long-term Adderall use can bring about detrimental health consequences, including an increased risk for stroke or heart attack.

Sedatives

Sedative drugs or “Z-drugs” are a class of drugs used almost exclusively as sleep aids. The reason these are referred to as “Z-drugs” is not that they help people sleep but because they include names like zolpidem, eszopiclone, and zaleplon. By far, the most popular of these drugs is zolpidem, which we know by the generic name Ambien. While these drugs are not the same as benzos, they work similarly to benzos and have a moderate-to-high addiction liability. As mentioned earlier about the alcohol-like effects of benzo use, sedative drugs are known for their intoxication effects. “Sleep driving” has been used to refer to someone who drives while “drunk” on sedative drugs like Ambien.

A Mixed Bag

A host of factors come into play with each drug, which can increase or decrease the likelihood of abuse. Because these drugs are so common (and legal with a prescription), one of the most important things to remember is the increased risk of mixing these drugs. The FDA always releases updated warnings for new dangers that come to light with various drugs over the years, and many of these warnings concern the deadly risk of mixing these drugs together.

Just because something comes in a pill bottle with a label and clear directions doesn’t mean it is harmless. If you or someone you love is prescribed any of the drugs mentioned above, remember that abuse is not limited to illegal drug use or failing to follow dosage directions. It can happen to anyone who uses these highly addictive medications as directed.

A Florida sheriff said that his department “always” caught Disney employees during undercover operations, while revealing the results of a week-long investigation into human trafficking.

The large investigation, known as “Fall Haul 2,” was spearheaded by the Polk County Police Department and involved a week-long sting operation in central Florida that netted over 150 arrests.

“Our goal is to identify victims, offer them help, and arrest those who are fueling the exploitation of human beings (Johns) and those profiting from the exploitation of human beings. Prostitution is not a victimless crime – it results in exploitation, disease, dysfunction, drug and alcohol addiction, violence, and broken families,” Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement.

People from Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, California, North Carolina, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Arizona were all arrested during the undercover operation. Notable arrests included a Disney bellhop, a Georgia police deputy chief, and a high school physical education teacher.

The Disney employee, 57-year-old Guillermo Perez, was arrested for soliciting a prostitute. Perez is a bellhop for Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. While showing Perez’s photo while at the press conference, Judd suggested he was not surprised to have arrested a Disney employee.

“Now, where would we be with an undercover operation and no Disney employees?” he said. “Oh yes, we always have Disney employees.”

Also arrested was an independent photographer who the sheriff’s department said is occasionally “contracted by Disney.”

Jason DiPrima, the former deputy chief of administration for the Cartersville Police Department in Georgia, was arrested as well for soliciting a prostitute. DiPrima, who has since resigned from his position, allegedly gave an undercover detective $180 and a pack of White Claw, according to the sheriff.

“He did a mean, nasty thing to his family,” Judd said.

A correctional officer at Lake County Correctional Facility was also detained and will now be “in the jail as a jailbird like those jailbirds he watches,” the sheriff said.

Several school employees were also arrested during the sting. Twenty-six-year-old P.E. teacher John Layton was arrested for soliciting a prostitute and received a terse response from the sheriff when he said that he had track practice in the morning.
