Is it time to have a Federal photo ID for every legal U.S. citizen? Let’s look at this issue.

It seems that every election year one party, group or ethnicity begins the age old discussion about voter identification (IDs).

Let’s look at some studies that take on this issue, but before we do we need to consider the following question:

QUESTION: Should the U.S. government issue photo IDs to every legal citizen?

According to Vital Records Online, “There is currently no federally issued photo identity that is mandatory for citizens to have. The only essential form of identification federally issued is a Social Security card containing an individual’s Social Security number. However, it does not include a photo of the holder. Passport books and passport cards are also federally issued, but they are not mandatory.”

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. These purposes are:

  • Accessing certain federal facilities
  • Boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft
  • Entering nuclear power plants

BTW, I and my wife have military IDs. As a retired veteran we both have a photo ID that allows us to enter any military base, can be used when being screened by TSA before boarding a flight, to enter a PX and commissary and for our Tri-Care for life supplemental medical insurance. When I got my new Military ID my index finger on each hand was digitally scanned.

Our Costco credit card has our photos on the back. Also, we each have a Florida driver’s licence which is the ID to be used when we vote in local, state and national elections. I also have a Veterans Administration photo ID, due to a combat related disability.

ID Cards are Racist

There are many who continue to spread the myth that ID cards are racist.

For example the Brennen Center for Justice on its website has an article published on January 16, 2020 by Theodore R. Johnson titled The New Voter Suppression which states,

Over the last decade, states have enacted voter restrictions that disproportionately disenfranchise racial minorities and distort our democracy.

Over the past decade, half the states in the nation have placed new, direct burdens on people’s right to vote, abetted by a 2013 Supreme Court decision that struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act. And the racial cause and effect of these seemingly race-neutral laws are hard to escape.

Take strict voter ID.

These laws require voters to present a government-issued photo ID in order to vote, and they offer no meaningful fallback options for people who do not possess one of these IDs. Like their Jim Crow predecessors, strict voter ID laws are often defended by reference to a racially neutral need to defend the “integrity” of elections. Specifically, defenders claim that voter ID laws are needed to combat voter impersonation fraud. But study after study has shown that voter impersonation fraud is vanishingly rare.

But is Mr. Johnson correct?

In 2019 in a Daily Caller column titled Study Says Stricter Voter ID Laws Do Not Lead To Voter Suppression Nick Givas reported,

Former Department of Justice attorney J. Christian Adams said voter ID laws do not lead to voter suppression Wednesday on “Fox & Friends,” citing a study from The National Bureau of Economic Research.

“This is a huge survey,” Adams said. “Fifty-thousand sampled. They discovered that voter ID has absolutely no negative impact on voters — something most of us already knew, a small fringe of dishonest people didn’t know. They make money off of this. They raise huge sums of money to pay lawyers to attack states that implement voter ID … This is something most Americans agree with, and now we know it doesn’t do any harm.”

The study examined 10 states with voter ID laws, including Georgia and Wisconsin. It found minorities were not negatively affected by the measures, Adams said.

“A huge survey found that it did not effect minorities negatively, which tells you they have been lying,” he added.

The Bottom Line

To end this he said/he said argument perhaps it is time for every legal American citizen to have a national photo ID. Each individual state would issue the ID under a new law passed by the U.S. Congress. This new law would give every legal citizen, and only a legal citizen, a means of identification.

This new photo ID can be used as a drivers licence, to board an aircraft, as a passport, etc. It would be an American identification card only for U.S. citizens.

Anyone without this ID card, or with a fraudulent one, would be arrested, charged, tried and if convicted sent to prison or deported.

This would eliminate the need for illegal aliens to appear in court. If you don’t have a U.S. National photo ID then you don’t belong here.

Additionally, businesses would be required before they hire someone to see their U.S. National photo ID card. No business can, under penalty of law, hire anyone without this card as proof of citizenship.

Every level of law enforcement would be able to then identify those who are here legally and those who are not.

If every legal citizen is required to have his or her own U.S. National photo ID then there is, by definition, no discrimination of any kind.

Problem solved.

ROOKE: D.C. Republicans Prove The Swamp Is As Infested And Useless As Ever

After losing over and over again, state after state, to former President Donald Trump, Nikki Haley finally won a Republican Primary race in the District of Columbia.

If Republican voters were ever in doubt about whether Republicans in D.C. understand them and the issues facing everyday Americans, Haley’s win should solidify in their minds that they don’t. In the 2020 general election, D.C. voters overwhelmingly voted for President Joe Biden. Trump garnered just 5% of the vote in the district. The 2024 GOP primary was more of the same. Only about 2,000 people voted, and of that sampling, Haley won 63% of the vote to Trump’s 33%.

In open primary states, Haley has been able to hang on because Democrats are willing to jump the aisle to side with the “anyone but Trump” option in hopes their failing candidate, Biden, will be able to sneak out a win in November against a candidate adamantly rejected by the Republican base.

However, D.C. is not an open primary. Only registered Republicans can vote in the D.C. primary, making her win an eye-opener for voters about who is running the offices of the most important officials in the country.

Haley is not the base’s choice in Iowa, South Carolina, Michigan, Missouri, Idaho, New Hampshire, etc., but the D.C. political class overwhelmingly supports her. The people who think they know better than the Republican base about what issues and policies are good for them love Haley.

Chair of the D.C. Republican Party Patrick Mara and Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) at National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors Dan Schuberth perfectly encapsulated this point with their quotes about Haley’s win to Politico.

“This universe is a little more sophisticated than just about any universe in any other state,” Mara told the outlet. “I listen to the political podcasts in the morning. I read the newsletters throughout the day. That’s probably, like, half the people showing up at this.”

“You’ve got a really dialed-in political class,” Schuberth, who hosted Haley’s D.C. campaign stop, said. “You know, folks read POLITICO. They read The Hill. Folks here are reading the Washington Post.”

Mara and Schuberth are among the Republicans living inside the D.C. echo chamber who believe that reading mainstream media newsletters and political punditry, knowing all the people working on the campaigns and living in the district gives them a better understanding of what’s good for Americans. In the political class system, they would consider themselves at the top, while a family of six burdened by the economic and social repercussions of their hubris is an uninformed lemming.

Haley’s presidential campaign has been nothing short of a wish list for the old guard of the Republican Party that flies in direct contrast to the new GOP. Middle America does not want to send their boys to fight in another endless war in the desert, where death is inevitable. Parents are disgusted with the state of the U.S. education system, which acts as an indoctrination camp for far-left policies. Working-class Americans can not only see but feel how illegal immigration puts their families at risk, lowers their wages, and makes them compete for jobs that are rightfully theirs.

Trump captures the angst of everyday Americans in the way the Democrats used to do, while Haley campaigns like a Reagan-era Republican devoid of this insight. He stands up for these people, tells them it’s okay to recognize how these policies affect them, and promises to right the wayward ship once he’s back in office.

To disregard this reality the way the GOP political class does is why the base will take two steps forward and one step back. While at the state level, Republicans are fortifying election integrity, fighting back against open borders and killing the infestation of DEI, the D.C. swamp is terrified even to admit these issues are a problem, much less take the fight to the radicals implementing them.

It takes a level of ignorance and arrogance to tell Republican voters they can’t have the safe, prosperous country they grew up in. That their wish to have policies focused on putting Americans first isn’t popular or winnable when Trump beats their preferred candidate, Haley, into the ground in every state, gaining momentum with each victory. He’s a political force not just because of his one-liners and smash-mouth style of campaigning but because he gave a voice to the base when everyone else told them to forget their patriotism, forget their American dream and instead bow down to the global machine ruining their country.

ELECTION FRAUD: Biden’s Border Invasion Will Inflate Democrats’ Electoral College Majority

The hostile invasion by illegals (or as the Democrats call them, ‘newcomers’) is by design.

It’s about seizing and keeping power absolutely.

Biden’s Border Invasion Will Bolster Democrats’ Electoral College Majority

By: Dawn Buckingham, The Federalist, March 04, 2024

Democrats don’t care about public safety. They only care about securing more Electoral College votes and amassing power.

At noon on Jan. 20, 2021, President Biden took the oath of office. What do you think he did in his first 12 hours? He signed an executive order titled “Executive Order on Ensuring a Lawful and Accurate Enumeration and Apportionment Pursuant to the Decennial Census.” That is government speak for directing the Census Bureau to count all illegal aliens when the census is taken.

Every 10 years, when the census is conducted, the population numbers are used to redraw congressional district lines so that they generally have the same amount of people in each district across the country. The more people counted, the more congressional seats a state receives. So if you are a state like California losing population, you lose seats in Congress. If you gain population, like Texas, you gain congressional seats. The number of congressional seats also directly relates to the number of electors each state can send to the Electoral College. More population equals more congressional seats. More congressional seats equal more votes in the Electoral College.

To the Democrats, this is simple math — sovereignty and public safety be damned. I’ve listened to many Texans ask in exasperation: When will enough be enough? When will there be enough illegal immigration, enough crime, and enough handouts of “free” phones, plane tickets, hotels, and cash for noncitizens who enter this country illegally? Is it 7 million more or maybe 20 million more? I believe the answer to that question is 270. That is the number of electoral votes required to win the presidency in the Electoral College.

The crisis at the border is not an accident, nor is it a confluence of outside factors resulting in unchecked illegal immigration. Instead, it is planned and facilitated by the Democrats in Washington, D.C., to bolster failing blue states, increase their representation in Congress, and cement a permanent majority in the Electoral College. Many reasonable Texans wonder why anyone would want a sanctuary city or sanctuary state. The logic becomes more obvious once you understand the end game: to create a welcoming enclave free from consequences, flaunt the law, refuse to cooperate with law enforcement, and swell a population dependent on the state. Then count everyone, citizen and noncitizen alike, to amass power.

Does this sound crazy? Is the government capable of executing such a plan, or are they simply incompetent? Usually, the simplest answer is the right one, so incompetence could be a reasonable answer. Still, there is no denying that Democrats are aware of the power of counting illegal aliens in the census.

Supreme Court Rules Trump Cannot Be Removed From Colorado Ballot

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that former President Donald Trump cannot be removed from Colorado’s 2024 ballot.

The Colorado Supreme Court found Trump ineligible for the state’s ballot in December, ruling he was disqualified under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. The Civil-war era provision bars individuals who took an oath to the Constitution and then “engaged in insurrection” from holding office.

“Because the Constitution makes Congress, rather than the States, responsible for enforcing Section 3 against federal officeholders and candidates, we reverse,” the court’s ruling stated.

A group of Colorado voters, backed by the left-wing group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, sued to remove Trump in September, arguing his role in “recruiting, inciting and encouraging a violent mob” on Jan. 6, 2021 was disqualifying. Maine and, just last week, Illinois, followed by also finding Trump ineligible.

Over 60 challenges have been filed in various states challenging Trump’s eligibility for the ballot, according to court documents.

During oral arguments, nearly every justice expressed reservations about allowing a single state to remove Trump from the ballot.

In April, the Supreme Court will hear another consequential case considering whether Trump is immune from prosecution in his federal election interference case. The trial in Washington, D.C., is currently on hold pending the decision on Trump’s appeal.

Appeals Court Overturns Jan. 6 Defendant’s Sentence, Impacting Dozens of Cases

Even so, the Biden regime is jailing journalists and putting them in leg and belly Chains to face Jan. 6 ‘misdemeanors.’

The prosecutions are/were treason at the highest level.

That the 2020 election was stolen.

These criminal actions merely secure the coup.

Dozens of Jan. 6 cases might be impacted after the court’s ruling on Friday.

By: Jack Phillips, Epoch Times, March 1, 2024;

An appeals court in Washington unanimously ruled that a Jan. 6 defendant’s sentence was improperly enhanced, a move that could impact numerous other Jan. 6 cases.

On Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled that Larry Brock, who was convicted for a range of crimes related to Jan. 6, improperly had additional charges of “interference with the administration of justice.” The judge who wrote the court’s opinion wrote that the charge doesn’t apply to a sentencing enhancement, however, and struck it down.

“Brock challenges both the district court’s interpretation of Section 1512(c)(2)’s elements and the sufficiency of the evidence to support that conviction,” wrote the judge, Patricia Millett.

The judge, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, concluded that any interference with Congress’ certification of the 2020 electoral votes isn’t tantamount to a sentencing enhancement.

“Because Section 2J1.2’s text, commentary, and context establish that the ‘administration of justice’ does not extend to Congress’s counting and certification of electoral college votes, the district court erred in applying Section 2J1.2(b)(2)’s three-level sentencing enhancement to Brock’s Section 1512(c)(2) conviction,” the judge wrote.

The judges, in siding with Mr. Brock, wrote that Congress’ function on Jan. 6 was not judicial but was only a part of the 2020 presidential election process.

“Taken as a whole, the multi-step process of certifying electoral college votes—as important to our democratic system of government as it is—bears little resemblance to the traditional understanding of the administration of justice as the judicial or quasi-judicial investigation or determination of individual rights,” the panel concluded.

Law enforcement officials who were there at the Capitol on that day, they added, were “to protect the lawmakers and their process, not to investigate individuals’ rights or to enforce Congress’s certification decision.”

“After all,” the judges wrote, “law enforcement is present for security purposes for a broad variety of governmental proceedings that do not involve the ‘administration of justice’—presidential inaugurations, for example, and the pardoning of the Thanksgiving Turkey.”

Ten Percent Of 2020 Biden Voters Now Back Trump: POLL

Ten percent of President Joe Biden’s 2020 voters now back former President Donald Trump, a new poll found.

While 97 percent of voters who cast their ballot for Trump in 2020 still plan to vote for him, Biden is only attracting 83 percent of his previous voters, according to a New York Times and Siena College poll. Trump has a five-point lead overall, ranking ahead of Biden 48% to 43%, the poll shows.

Just 36% of voters say they approve or strongly approve of how Biden is handling his job as president, with 43% of voters saying they think his policies have hurt them personally.

Trump has earned voters from blocs that traditionally vote Democrat, according to the NYT. Women are equally split between Trump and Biden, while Trump gained a lead among Latinos, according to the NYT.

The NYT/Siena College poll surveyed 980 voters nationwide between Feb. 25 to 28, 2024 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for registered voters.

Another recent Bloomberg News/Morning Consult survey found the majority of voters in seven key battleground states blame Biden and Democrats for the border crisis.

In the Michigan Democratic primary on Tuesday, Biden received just over 80% support, which some analysts and consultants said is a “warning” sign and indication there is “not a lot of enthusiasm” for Biden among Democrats.

Around 23% of Democratic primary voters surveyed in the NYT/Siena College poll said they were enthusiastic about Biden, while 48% of Republicans said they were enthusiastic about Trump being the nominee.

The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

An Election Integrity Analogy: Good Efforts do NOT assure Good Results

When faced with a complicated, multi-faceted problem like election integrity, it’s often easier to get a much better grasp of it by using an analogy…

home remodeling project might be a good comparison. Let’s say we have a 250-year-old, 3-story home, that has exceptional historical significance. (For example, let’s imagine that in this home a group of patriots met and drafted up the first version of the Constitution!) Additionally, it is an architecturally beautiful building.

Although the home mostly has “good bones,” it has fallen on hard times due to decades of neglect, disputes of ownership, self-serving actions by caretakers, etc.

Some of the current issues are: dilapidated siding, deuterating porches, large holes in the roof, a woefully inadequate electrical system, antiquated plumbing, floors that need refinishing, walls that must be painted or repapered, etc. Although the foundation needs minor attention, it still seems to be solid.

Since no one else is doing anything meaningful about this property (other than a lot of talk, blame, and obfuscation), a group of patriotic citizens decides that they will step in.

These selfless volunteers get permission and then (at their own expense!) energetically do the following: start cleaning up the mess, wallpapering and painting walls, sanding floors, upgrading the electrical system, installing new plumbing, fixing broken windows, repairing porches, pointing chimneys, and improving the landscaping.

Do you see any problems here in my made-up analogy?

I’ve phrased it in such a way that it’s clear that there is no professional oversight to organize and direct these excellent efforts, in an appropriate, effective way. For example, renovation of such a property needs to be done in the proper sequence. In this case, it is a waste of time, effort and money to be finishing interior walls and floors before ALL of the needed plumbing and electrical work is done.

The biggest error in this analogy is also a sequential failure. The number one priority of this renovation MUST be to fix the roof. Almost any work on the interior is likely wasted until the inside is no longer exposed to the elements.

So what’s the parallel with election integrity?

We have almost 250 years of election history, architecturally attractive, and built on a solid foundation. However, our election system has fallen on very hard times due to decades of neglect, disputes about responsibility, self-serving actions by those elected to be caretakers, etc.

One of the few positives about the 2020 election is that it woke up many citizens to the reality that our election system has become seriously deteriorated.

In response, many hundreds of patriotic people have dedicated considerable time, effort, and money in an attempt to renovate our election system. My point here is that unless the contributions of these volunteers are properly focused, it’s likely that the majority of it will do very little. (The 2022 elections should have been a wake-up call!)

So what is the elections parallel with starting by properly fixing the roof?

Meaningful post-election audits!

(See “The Solution” for election integrity: here.)

Without doing that, very little of the rest of the superior efforts will be of any avail!

Everything You Need to Know about the Government’s Mass Censorship Campaign

Federal Court Rules Major Biden Spending Bill Was Passed Unconstitutionally

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that a $1.7 trillion spending bill was unconstitutionally passed in December 2022 due to the lack of a quorum, blocking enforcement of a law about pregnant women in the workplace.

United States District Judge James Wesley Hendrix of the Northern District of Texas said that the House of Representatives improperly passed the spending package because a quorum of members was not physically present. The then-Democrat-controlled body allowed proxy voting for the measure, which 215 Democrats and nine Republicans supported.

“Although the Court finds that the passage of the Consolidated Appropriations Act violated the Constitution, Texas does not seek an injunction of—and the Court does not enjoin—the entire Act,” Hendrix wrote in the 120-page opinion. “Rather, the Court enjoins only the application of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act against Texas. The relief granted here is limited to abating the injury that Texas has proven will occur.”

“Based on the Quorum Clause’s text, original public meaning, and historical practice, the Court concludes that the Quorum Clause bars the creation of a quorum by including non-present members participating by proxy,” Hendrix added. “Supreme Court precedent has long held that the Quorum Clause requires presence, and the Clause’s text distinguishes those absent members from the quorum and provides a mechanism for obtaining a physical quorum by compelling absent members to attend. This power to compel attendance makes little sense divorced from physical presence.”

Paxton sued President Joe Biden in February 2023 for signing the measure, arguing in court documents that congressional power to force absent members to attend “would make little sense if the Constitution did not require physical attendance.”

“Congress acted egregiously by passing the largest spending bill in U.S. history with fewer than half the members of the House bothering to do their jobs, show up, and vote in person,” Paxton said in a Tuesday afternoon release. “Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi abused proxy voting under the pretext of COVID-19 to pass this law, then Biden signed it, knowing they violated the Constitution. This was a stunning violation of the rule of law. I am relieved the Court upheld the Constitution.”

The Supreme Court ruled against Republican efforts to challenge the proxy voting rule put in place during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in January 2022.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Expert: Biden Admin Using Federal Agencies and Left-Wing NGOs to Illegally Amass Votes

Last week, it was reported that the Biden administration is utilizing at least one federal agency to collude with left-wing non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in an effort to conduct get out the vote campaigns. Experts say the administration’s actions violate federal law.

On February 20, news broke that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) worked directly with an NGO known as Demos to increase voter turnout. Demos’s website states that it is “committed to racial justice” through “research, litigation, [and] strategic communications” in order to “build power with and for Black and brown communities.”

Demos’s stated policy positions include “climate equity,” defined as “[c]limate change solutions” that “must address racial and economic inequity/inequality” and “debt-free college,” among other left-wing causes. But as described by Hans von Spakovsky, a senior legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation, perhaps most troubling is Demos’s activism against election integrity.

“They’ve been around for quite a while,” he explained on “Washington Watch” last week. “In fact, I dealt with them 20 years ago when I was working at [DOJ] during the Bush administration. Demos is one of these organizations that’s against any and all kinds of election reforms. They’re against voter ID — they don’t want voter registration lists cleaned up. They believe that aliens should be given the right to vote. I mean, you, you name it. And they’re on the wrong position on every issue entirely involved in election integrity. So having them involved in [get out the vote efforts] is … a good move for [the Biden administration] politically, but a bad move for anyone who believes in honest elections.”

Observers have noted that in March 2021, President Joe Biden issued an executive order (EO) stating that federal agencies “shall consider ways to expand citizens’ opportunities to register to vote and to obtain information about, and participate in, the electoral process.” In January 2022, House Republicans sent a letter to the Office of Management and Budget pointing out that Biden’s EO “is nearly identical to a federal election takeover plan crafted by the radical left-leaning group known as Demos.”

As von Spakovsky underscored, the EO “reaches all levels and every single department of the executive branch [telling] every single department to come up with a strategic plan … to engage in voter registration with any and all individuals that you deal with and to help them with their voting process, obtaining absentee ballots, etc. And of course, one, [Biden] doesn’t have the authority to do this. Two, he’s never been authorized [to] provide any funding with this.”

But the “biggest problem,” von Spakovsky contended, is how Biden is leveraging government benefits for political gain. “Assume that you are, for example, applying for Social Security disability benefits. And the clerk you are dealing with says, ‘Oh, by the way, we may want to be sure that you get registered to vote. Oh, and here, I want to help you with your absentee ballot.’ Well, the people that apply for benefits for the federal government are often elderly, disabled, very vulnerable. What’s their thought going to be? ‘Boy, I better vote the way. The White House would like me to vote. I better vote to support Democrats who control the government, otherwise I might not get my benefits.’”

Von Spakovsky further noted that despite The Heritage Foundation and other organizations’ attempts to gather information about the administration’s actions through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, the administration has not been forthcoming.

“[T]he White House and the [DOJ] have been fighting all attempts to turn over any of this information,” he explained. “In fact, lots of litigation lawsuits have been filed to try to force them to provide it because they don’t want to do it. And by the way, part of the order … was that they should contract with third-party organizations to help them with this voter registration. Well, they certainly aren’t going to contract with any conservative organizations. All they’re doing is going to their political allies, left-wing advocacy groups, to help them do that. In essence, what they are doing is moving the get out the vote campaign — that normally political parties and campaigns have to pay for — into the federal government and having the federal government get out the vote for Joe Biden and his political party and his candidates.”

Furthermore, von Spakovsky argued that Biden’s action constitutes a violation of the Hatch Act, a 1939 law that prohibits federal employees from engaging in specific forms of political activity.

“[W]ho is supposed to enforce violations of the Hatch Act? Why the U.S. Department of Justice under the control of Merrick Garland,” von Spakovsky emphasized. “And you and I both know that they are not going to in any way. In fact, they haven’t objected to this executive order [or] put up any opposition to it. And they certainly aren’t going to go after any of the bureaucrats or political appointees within different departments, like the Department of Agriculture, who are engaging in partisan political activities to carry out this executive order. That’s just not going to happen.”

2024: The Year of Consequential Elections

As the 2024 U.S. presidential election comes into sharper focus, much of the political punditry has focused on the potential rematch of Joe Biden versus Donald Trump. In recent weeks, the American press has reported extensively on former President Trump’s ongoing court cases and Special Counsel Robert Hur’s characterization of President Biden as a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

Although Americans should expect an avalanche of news related to the presidential election over the next 10 months, it is important to remember that other offices besides the presidency will also be on the ballot ?” including 34 U.S. Senate seats, all 435 U.S. House seats, 11 governorships, and legislative seats in 44 states. The results of these elections will have massive consequences for years to come.

The United States isn’t the only country engaging in national elections this year: at least 64 other countries will be choosing leaders as well. Already, millions of people have voted in elections in Bangladesh (January 7), Taiwan (January 13), Finland (January 28), El Salvador (February 4), Pakistan (February 8), and Indonesia (February 14). In the coming months, citizens in many other nations will cast ballots.

As Christians, we recognize that participating in elections is a stewardship and an opportunity to love our neighbors in a practical way. Since the outcome of these elections will affect the rights and livelihoods of so many people, Christians ought to pray that those participating in the political process make wise choices.

Africa

South Africa will hold its general election on May 29. Observers expect it will be the most competitive election in that country since the end of Apartheid. Additionally, many analysts predict that the governing African National Congress will lose its parliamentary majority for the first time since 1994. With unemployment and poverty on voters’ minds, incumbent president Cyril Ramaphosa faces a challenging re-election campaign.

Other countries with elections include Togo (legislative, April 13), Ghana (general, December 7), Botswana, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, and Somaliland.

Asia

This spring, voters in India will decide whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be elected for a third term. Modi’s party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, is popular and holds the most seats in the Indian Parliament.

On April 10, South Korea will hold legislative elections that will determine the composition of the 300-seat National Assembly. President Yoon Suk Yeol (elected in 2022) is hoping his conservative People Power Party, currently the second largest party in the National Assembly, will wrest control from the more liberal Democratic Party of Korea.

Americas

On June 2, Mexican citizens will participate in a general election to pick a new president and legislature. Incumbent president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who is ineligible for a second term, has endorsed former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as his successor. Sheinbaum is a member of Mexico’s more liberal party and is competing against Xóchitl Gálvez, the leader of a center-right coalition.

Other countries with elections include Panama (general, May 5), the Dominican Republic (general, May 19), and Uruguay (general, October 27).

Europe

The European Parliament, the legislative body of the European Union (EU), will hold its quinquennial election on June 6-9. All 720 seats are up for election. With an estimated 400 million eligible voters, the election will be the largest transnational election in the world. It will also be the EU’s first parliamentary election since the United Kingdom’s exit in 2020. Many pollsters are predicting a strong showing by conservative parties, an outcome that would dramatically affect the EU’s political landscape.

European countries with elections this year include Portugal (legislative, March 10), Slovakia (presidential, March 23), Lithuania (presidential, May 12), Georgia (general, November 5), Croatia (general, TBD), and Romania (presidential, TBD).

Expected Elections

In addition to these confirmed elections, other nations expected to hold elections in 2024 include Austria (legislative), Jordan (legislative), Moldova (presidential), Syria (legislative), and Uzbekistan (legislative).

Worth noting is that Russia is also scheduled to hold a presidential election in March, although observers expect President Vladimir Putin to win upwards of 90% of the vote in an election a Kremlin spokesman conceded “is not really democracy.” Additionally, it is possible that the United Kingdom will hold its general election this fall, with polls indicating the ruling Conservative Party may lose 10 Downing Street to the Labour Party for the first time in 14 years.

In short, 2024 has already proved itself to be a consequential election year. By the year’s conclusion, nearly half of the world’s population will have seen a national election take place in their country. As hundreds of millions of people participate in these elections, Christians should commit to praying for voters as well as the leaders who will take office.

In an interconnected world, what happens in one country inevitably affects another. Elections matter because people matter, and the 2024 elections will undoubtedly affect an untold number of people. Thus, until King Jesus returns, Christians should pray, vote, and engage with politics, remembering that faithfulness, not results, is how we will ultimately be judged.

Donald Trump Appeals New York Civil Fraud Trial Verdict

Former President Donald Trump has appealed a verdict by the New York Supreme Court that found him guilty of civil fraud and fined hundreds of millions of dollars.

Trump, the leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, was ordered to pay the State of New York approximately $355 million on Feb. 16, a figure that was revised to $454 million, according to Democratic Attorney General Letitia James of New York, whose office sued Trump in the case. On Monday, Trump filed a notice of appeal with the New York Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, seeking to overturn the verdict.

“PLEASE TAKE NOTICE THAT…Defendants President Donald J. Trump, Donald Trump, Jr., Eric Trump, Allen Weisselberg, Jeffrey McConney, the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, the Trump Organization, Inc….hereby appeal to the Appellate Division, First Department, from the Decision,” wrote Trump’s attorneys in the notice of appeal. The trial verdict was issued by Justice Arthur F. Engoron of the New York Supreme Court’s Trial Decision, who had been previously criticized by Trump while presiding over the case.

Notice of Appeal by Donald J. Trump in People of the State of New York v. Trump, Et. Al. (Feb. 26, 2024) by Daily Caller News Foundation on Scribd

James later claimed that the actual amount Trump was required to pay was $464 million. Trump’s net worth is currently $2.6 billion, according to Forbes, with most of his wealth comprising the ownership of properties in New York City, such as Trump Tower.

The verdict in the case was handed down after a trial beginning on Oct. 2 that was attended several times by Trump. He later testified in the trial in a chaotic session that saw Engoron chide him multiple times to conform to the court’s rules, though was later allowed to deliver his testimony without interruption.

“The fraud is on the court, not on me,” Trump said, according to CNN. “This is not a political rally,” Engoron responded to Trump’s attacks while on the stand.

The verdict and subsequent appeal is one of many civil and criminal proceedings that implicate Trump. He is presently under indictment on dozens of state felony charges in New York City and Miami — regarding allegedly falsified business records and his possession of highly classified documents after leaving office — as well as in Washington, D.C., and Fulton County, Georgia, which concern his alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Additionally, Trump is currently involved in litigation at the Supreme Court of the United States regarding the decisions of state authorities in Colorado and Maine to disqualify him from the ballot in the 2024 presidential election, based on Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment, and is petitioning the court for a writ of certiorari regarding his Washington, D.C. indictment to claim constitutional immunity from prosecution.

Furthermore, Trump was ordered to pay $83 million to E. Jean Carroll as damages for defamation following his criticism of her after she successfully sued him for an alleged sexual assault in the 1990s, where he was ordered to pay her $5 million.

The New York Attorney General’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

Democrats Say They Won’t Certify 2024 Election Results If Trump Wins: Report

Democrats: The worst thing in the history of the world — punishable perhaps by death — is not voting to certify an election.

Also from Democrats: We are conspiring right now to not certify the next election if our opponent wins.

Wait, what? Isn’t that their definition of insurrection?

Did you really think the Democrat party of treason would stop at at close to a hundred bogus indictments?

How Democrats Could Disqualify Trump If the Supreme Court Doesn’t

Without clear guidance from the Court, House Democrats suggest that they might not certify a Trump win on January 6.

By Russell Berman

Near the end of the Supreme Court’s oral arguments about whether Colorado could exclude former President Donald Trump from its ballot as an insurrectionist, the attorney representing voters from the state offered a warning to the justices—one evoking the January 6 riot that had set the case in motion.

By this point in the hearing, the justices had made clear that they didn’t like the idea of allowing a single state to kick Trump out of the presidential race, and they didn’t appear comfortable with the Court doing so either. Sensing that Trump would likely stay on the ballot, the attorney, Jason Murray, said that if the Supreme Court didn’t resolve the question of Trump’s eligibility, “it could come back with a vengeance”—after the election, when Congress meets once again to count and certify the votes of the Electoral College.

Murray and other legal scholars say that, absent clear guidance from the Supreme Court, a Trump win could lead to a constitutional crisis in Congress. Democrats would have to choose between confirming a winner many of them believe is ineligible and defying the will of voters who elected him.
