‘No Federal Right To An Abortion’: Idaho GOP Members Lead Amicus Brief Supporting Pro-Life SCOTUS Case

Idaho Republican Sen. Jim Risch and fellow GOP Rep. Russ Fulcher filed an amicus brief Tuesday with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of defending the state’s pro-life case against the Biden administration, the Daily Caller learned first.

In a press release obtained by the Daily Caller, two leading Republicans were joined by the state’s entire delegation, along with 24 U.S. senators, and 93 U.S. representatives, to advocate for the pro-life law, the Defense of Life Act, after the Biden Administration previously attempted to override it. Prior to the GOP leaders’ move, an opening brief was filed with the U.S. Supreme Court on Feb. 20 by the state’s Republican Attorney General Raúl Labrador asking the high court to intervene in a legal battle between federal officials, motivating Republican leaders to also push for the case.

“Idahoans have passed a strong law to protect the lives of mothers and the unborn, yet the Biden administration is seeking every opportunity to expand abortion. This administration cherrypicked pieces of existing statute and wrongfully reinterpreted it to fit their agenda,” Risch stated. “Their manipulation of federal law cannot usurp state law, and there is no federal right to an abortion. This amicus brief demonstrates how the administration’s substantial federal overreach is aimed at undermining pro-life protections not only in Idaho but around the nation.”

In 2020, Idaho enacted a measure that made it a felony for doctors to perform most abortions, with exceptions when “necessary to prevent the death of the pregnant woman” or within the first trimester if the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest. Following Roe v. Wade’s overturning in June 2022, the law came into effect. However, nearly two months later in August, the Justice Department sued the state over the measure.

The Biden administration claimed that the state was in violation of the Constitution and was ultimately prevented by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA). However, the state claims that there is not only no conflict between EMTALA and Idaho’s law, but also argues that the Biden administration is attempting to “rewrite” the health act to prevent the state from enforcing the pro-life law, according to Labrador.

23-726 Amicus Brief of 121 … by hailey

EMTALA, enacted by Congress in 1986, requires hospitals with emergency departments to provide any patient with a medical examination and prohibits the departments from “refusing to examine or treat individuals with an emergency medical condition.” Notably, while there is a duty to pregnant women and the “health” of her unborn child within EMTALA, there is no mention of abortion.

While the state continued its back-and-forth legal battle with the Ninth Circuit panel, by January, SCOTUS ultimately placed a stay on two cases, Moyle v. United States and Idaho v. United States, that were impacted by the Biden administration.

“The case of Moyle v. United States and Idaho v. United States involves an elective, induced abortion which is against Idaho law,” Fulcher stated. “The Biden administration has no authority to use EMTALA to avoid holding these individuals accountable for breaking the law, and this sets a precedence that is harmful to women and children around the country.”

The GOP leaders are seeking to have the amicus brief clarify EMTALA’s correct definition, proper federal use, and the determination of no Constitutional right to an abortion based on the SCOTUS ruling within Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. Additional supporting organizations behind the legal move are: Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, National Right to Life, March for Life Action, Americans United for Life, Alliance Defending Freedom, Family Research Council, Catholic Vote, Concerned Women for America, Family Policy Alliance and Human Coalition Action.

“The Supreme Court has ruled it is the states’ ability to protect the right to life, yet the Biden Administration continues to exercise federal overreach to advance its abortion agenda,” state Republican Sen. Mike Crapo stated. “The Administration must stop its ongoing attacks on state-issued pro-life protections, including in Idaho.”

Arguments for the cases are set to appear before SCOTUS during their April session.

Republican Lawmakers Set Their Sights On Abortion ‘Trafficking’ In Latest Post-Dobbs Fight

  • Republican state lawmakers are going after abortion “trafficking” in an effort to stop abortion advocates from evading state bans around the country and protect pregnant minors.
  • Idaho, Texas and now Tennessee have all pushed legislation on the issue and Republican state Rep. Jason Zachary of Tennessee told the Daily Caller News Foundation that his bill was personal after he had been “directly involved” with a family whose 14-year-old daughter had been taken away to get an abortion without their knowledge.
  • “It should be the easiest thing in the world to say it’s unacceptable for an adult to take somebody else’s kid anywhere without their parents knowing,” Katie Daniels, state policy director for Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, told the DCNF.

Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Republican state lawmakers have proposed a variety of pro-life laws, with three states placing a new focus on abortion “trafficking.”

Following the Dobbs decision, Idaho became the first state in 2023 to pass a bill enforcing criminal penalties for individuals “trafficking” a minor to another state to get an abortion and since then, Texas and Tennessee have followed suit on both the state and local levels. Republican state Rep. Jason Zachary of Tennessee told the Daily Caller News Foundation that he introduced his bill Monday after having been involved in a situation where a 14-year-old girl was taken without her parents’ knowledge to get an abortion last year.

“A young girl, a 14-year-old girl in East Tennessee, unbeknownst to her guardian was taken to West Tennessee and was not notified until the child was taken to West Tennessee. The child called the parents and said, ‘I’m in West Tennessee and I’m being taken to get an abortion.’ I was on the phone with the dad and the mom, [who were] crying asking me what I can do to help stop it. There was nothing I could do,” Zachary told the DCNF.

Zachary’s bill would make it a “criminal offense” for anyone other than a parent or guardian to take a minor out of Tennessee for an abortion and also “provide for a civil action against a person committing the offense of abortion trafficking of a minor for the wrongful death of an unborn child that was aborted,” according to the text. If passed a minor could not travel with someone other than their legal guardian to get a chemical or surgical abortion.

Texas has taken a slightly different approach than Idaho or Tennessee as multiple city councils have established new ordinances barring its citizens from being transported on their state highways to get an abortion, according to the Texas Tribune. The city council in Amarillo, Texas, is one of the latest to consider a travel ban but postponed any vote during a meeting on Dec. 19 for further review.

If passed, Amarillo’s ordinance would allow private citizens to sue anyone who “aids and abet[s]” someone to get an abortion using the highways, according to the Texas Tribune. Similar measures have been proposed in other counties, such as LubbockLlano, Odessa, Dallas and San Antonio, according to The Washington Post.

Some city council members have expressed concerns that the ordinances and their framing may be too extreme, according to the Post.

“I hate abortion. I’m a Jesus lover like all of you in here,” Llano councilwoman Laura Almond said during a meeting in August, according to the Post. She explained that in college she had once picked up a friend from an abortion clinic and that the law would have put her at risk of a lawsuit despite her personal beliefs on the subject.

“It’s overreaching,” Almond said during the meeting, according to the Post. “We’re talking about people here.”

Republicans have struggled on the issue of abortion over the last several elections due to poor messaging and a divided base regarding how strong candidates should be on pro-life issues. With the presidential election coming up in November, Katie Daniels, state policy director for Susan B. Anthony (SBA) Pro-Life America, told the DCNF that it will be important for Republican candidates endorsing any kind of abortion legislation, including anti-trafficking measures, to “talk about what they are for” and not just what they are against.

“It should be the easiest thing in the world to say it’s unacceptable for an adult to take somebody else’s kid anywhere without their parents knowing, let alone to another state for a medical procedure that’s illegal in their state. That should be a real point of consensus, regardless of political party,” Daniels said. “Beyond that, candidates should be talking about what they’re for. They’re for resources being available to women and their children, they’re for the pregnancy centers that help these women and they are for the life of both the mom and her baby.”

Daniels argued polling had found that “two-thirds of Americans” support parental notification and consent before minors can get a chemical abortion through the mail and a Rasmussen poll from July 2022 found that 64% of Americans support parental notification before a child gets an abortion.

“This is a very common sense position if you ask normal people. It’s politicians who are tied up to the industry that seem to have trouble with it,” Daniels told the DCNF.

Idaho Muslim migrant sex assault case: Obama-appointed prosecutor threatens community

“The Obama-appointed U.S. attorney for Idaho has taken the highly unusual step of intervening in a local criminal case involving an alleged sexual assault by juvenile Muslim migrants and threatened the community and media with federal prosecution if they ‘spread false information or inflammatory statements about the perpetrators.’”

In what other sex assault case has the prosecutor shown such solicitude for the perpetrators? This is clear evidence that a coverup is in full swing, and that Idaho and federal authorities are deeply embarrassed about this case for what it reveals about their suicidal policies regarding Muslim migrants.

wendy-olson-

Wendy J. Olson

“Explosive new twist in Idaho sex assault case,” by Leo Hohmann, WND, June 25, 2016:

The Obama-appointed U.S. attorney for Idaho has taken the highly unusual step of intervening in a local criminal case involving an alleged sexual assault by juvenile Muslim migrants and threatened the community and media with federal prosecution if they “spread false information or inflammatory statements about the perpetrators.”

WND and other news outlets have reported on the case involving three juvenile boys, two from Sudan and one from Iraq, who allegedly sexually assaulted a 5-year-old special-needs girl in the laundry room of the Fawnbrook Apartments in Twin Falls, Idaho.

The incident occurred on June 2, but did not come to light until more than two weeks later when stories began to swirl on social media.

The two older boys from Sudan were arrested on June 17 and released from juvenile detention less than a week later on June 23 pending further court proceedings.

Read WND’s previous stories on the Idaho case here and here.

The following is a news release issued late Friday from the office of United States Attorney Wendy J. Olson.

“BOISE – The United States Attorney’s Office extends its support to the five-year-old victim of assault, and her family, at the Fawnbrook Apartments in Twin Falls.

“The United States Attorney’s Office further encourages community members in Twin Falls and throughout Idaho to remain calm and supportive, to pay close attention to the facts that have been released by law enforcement and the prosecuting attorney, and to avoid spreading false rumors and inaccuracies.

“Grant Loebs is an experienced prosecutor, and Chief Craig Kingsbury is an experienced law enforcement officer. They are moving fairly and thoughtfully in this case,” said Wendy J. Olson, U.S. Attorney for Idaho. “As Mr. Loebs and Chief Kingsbury informed the public, the subjects in this case are juveniles, ages 14, 10 and 7. The criminal justice system, whether at the state or federal level, requires that juveniles be afforded a specific process with significant restrictions on the information that can be released. The fact that the subjects are juveniles in no way lessens the harm to or impact on the victim and her family.”

Olson continued, saying:

“The spread of false information or inflammatory or threatening statements about the perpetrators or the crime itself reduces public safety and may violate federal law. We have seen time and again that the spread of falsehoods about refugees divides our communities. I urge all citizens and residents to allow Mr. Loebs and Chief Kingsbury and their teams to do their jobs.”

As one of 93 U.S. attorneys, Olson represents the federal government in all civil and criminal cases within her state.

Olson was appointed to her post in 2010 by President Obama and has a history of taking strong stands against “anti-Muslim bias.”

Ann Corcoran, the author of the Refugee Resettlement Watch blog and the book “Refugee Resettlement and the Hijra to America,” said Olson’s statement is reminiscent of Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s warning the day after the San Bernardino jihad massacre in which Lynch said she would take “aggressive action” to prosecute “anti-Muslim” rhetoric that “edges toward violence.” Lynch was forced to walk back those comments after outrage from free speech advocates.

“This is threatening free speech,” Corcoran said of Olson’s statement. “It’s the federal government trying to intimidate into silence those citizens who don’t have resources or connections. This must mean we have hit a nerve with this administration.”

WND was the first to report a set of facts about the Twin Falls assault based on the eyewitness account of an 89-year-old grandmother who saw “something funny” going on at the laundry room entrance. It was there, on the afternoon of June 2, that Jolene Payne said she saw a 14-year-old boy filming something through a crack in the laundry room door. She flung open the door and was shocked at what she found. She said she saw two younger boys, ages 10 and 7, both naked, along with the little girl, who the boys had also allegedly stripped of her clothing.

The girl was covered in urine, Payne told WND.

The rest of the details are foggy due to the case being sealed, which is standard in juvenile cases.

A number of bloggers and at least one conservative news website reported erroneously that the girl had been “gang-raped” at “knifepoint” by “Syrian refugees.”

WND’s report clarified exactly what happened, however, and was circulated widely on social media.

Olson has often been at odds with conservative voices in the Idaho community.

Read Wendy J. Olson’s full bio.

She issued a statement on ‘building resilient communities” on July 10, 2015, after meeting with law enforcement, the ACLU and other groups to discuss “anti-refugee” and “anti-Muslim” sentiments in Idaho and across the country that she deemed were “seeking to divide communities.”

Adopting Obama’s ‘violent extremism’ rhetoric

Olson used the language of the United Nations-sanctioned “Strong Cities Network” or SCN, which was announced by Attorney General Loretta Lynch at the U.N. last fall, when she called for building “resilient communities” in the fight against “violent extremism.”

Lynch announced the SCN at the U.N. on Sept. 30, 2015, a program that attempts to globalize law enforcement agencies, connecting U.S. agencies with those overseas to combat violent extremism in all its forms. By eliminating the focus on Islamic terrorism, however, many conservatives viewed the SCN initiative as an attempt to single out and silence conservatives under the guise of branding them “right wing extremists.”

On July 8, 2015, just over two months before Lynch’s U.N. announcement, Olson said her staff met with representatives from the refugee community, refugee support agencies, the Idaho Muslim community, Boise Police Department, FBI, the Intermountain Fair Housing Council, the ACLU and Stand Up America to discuss community responses to recent incidents in Idaho and across the country.

“We are at a critical time in our nation and in our own community – from the shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, to anti-refugee and anti-Muslim sentiments expressed by groups and individuals in Idaho, to defiance in parts of some states to the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage in Obergefell v. Hodges,” said Olson in a statement last summer. “There are many currents that seek to divide communities. Instead, we have to come together. We need to stand up and form strategies against those who espouse extremist ideologies and recruit others to engage in violent acts in our communities on their behalf. We want to mentor our young people, educate parents, identify solutions, and form closer relationships between refugees and Idahoans who have been here for generations.”

Protecting Muslims against ‘bias’

Olson said that an immediate objective of the July 8 meeting was to reassure members of the refugee and Muslim communities that with the federal terrorism trial in United States v. Kurbanov scheduled to begin July 13, “law enforcement officers will be vigilant to protecting them against bias crimes.”

Olson called this meeting and issued her statement ahead of the trial that ended up convicting Fazliddin Kurbanov, a Muslim refugee from Uzbekistan, of conspiring to blow up U.S. military installations with homemade bombs being made in his Boise apartment. An Idaho jury convicted Kurbanov on terror charges in August last year following a 20-day trial and two days of deliberation.

Twin Falls, Idaho: Cover-up of Muslim refugees raping a 4-year old girl?

That is what some members of the Twin Falls community wanted to know when they attended a public comment period at their local city council meeting.

There are stories swirling on the internet that a gang of refugee juveniles raped a 4-year old girl and that the police are mum because everyone knows this would be a bombshell in a community already on edge about refugees being poured into the area.

(Since the citizens attended the council meeting detailed below, a local TV station is reporting that the case has been sealed.)

See our extensive coverage of past tensions in Twin Falls by clicking here.

It appears from comments at MagicValley.com that there is something to the story that the mayor and council are trying to hide. Emphasis below is mine.

TWIN FALLS • New concerns about Islam and refugees are being raised in Twin Falls in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in the nation’s history.

Chris Talktington 2

Councilman Chris Talkington

Less than two days after an American-born son of Afghan immigrants murdered 49 people in a gay nightclub in Orlando, four of the five people who spoke at a City Council meeting this week characterized refugees as a problem or called for more information to be released about a sexual assault that is alleged to have been committed by underage refugees.

[….]

On Monday, a small group of residents opposed to refugee resettlement and Islam turned its attention to the City Council, which allows an open-comment period where anyone can speak.

Much of their time was spent disparaging Muslims and asking for more information about an alleged sexual assault, the details of which haven’t confirmed by authorities.

There must be something to the story or we wouldn’t be hearing this. If it were a complete fabrication, they would be saying so.

Twin Falls County Prosecutor Grant Loebs said Wednesday that the rape case in question is under investigation and may involve juveniles. No one has been charged. Police Chief Craig Kingsbury wouldn’t provide any information about the case.

[….]

Julie Ruf is with the local chapter of Act for America, a conservative national security-focused organization involved in promoting anti-Shariah law bills in some states. The group has been accused by critics of being anti-Muslim. She read the Council a list of refugee-related questions and called for some sort of public forum or dialogue where people could express their views and get their questions answered.

Now, please go read the rest of the article at MagicValley.com.

Councilman Chris Talkington made the moral equivalence argument between potato famine Irish and the Islamists coming to America now. Big difference Chris—the Irish weren’t promoting sharia law and slaughtering Americans, they were grateful to be here. And, by the way, I’ll bet a buck that Talkington knows exactly what the rape allegations are!

The concerned citizens in Twin Falls are doing what they should—continuing to get information out to the public. By speaking up at this council meeting they have created more news and thus helped educate more citizens about the problem.  I would also be working really hard to replace Councilman Talkington! Some one of your group should run against him and make the election about this issue because even if you aren’t elected, the media would be forced to report on the campaign.

Muslim Migrants Sexually Assault 5-Year Old In Idaho

Fawnbrook-768x431On 2 June, 2016 a five-year old girl with special needs was playing outside her home at the Fawnbrook Apartments in Twin Falls, Idaho when she was taken by knife point to the shared laundry facilities on the premises by three boys from two refugee families, ages 13, 9, and 8 years old who sexually assaulted and urinated on her. The eight year old is also reported to have cut another young child’s arm with his knife a week before school was adjourned.

According to the victim’s mother, a trusted neighbor discovered her daughter with the three boys. Her clothes had been stripped off by the boys who were also naked and the 13 year old had a phone which allegedly held video of the incident. The mother and father of the victim promptly arrived on the scene after being alerted by the neighbor.

The video on the phone displayed the sexual assault of the five year old girl according to the father who viewed it, and reportedly shows the older boy coaching the younger ones during the assault and attempted rape of the little girl as well as urinating in her mouth and over her body as they pinned her against a wall.

The mother took the victim home immediately, stating she was going to call the police. Shortly after arriving home the mother of one of the attackers showed up at the victim’s home demanding in broken English, “No police, everything ok.”

Burka

Burka clad woman is the mother of the three Muslim boys accused in the sexual assault of the 5-year old girl.

The police were called and arrived on the scene two and a half hours later, at which point the cell phone was given to the local authorities. The mother of the victim has also reported receiving threats by two young men of Middle Eastern descent, who told her they will come after her if she pursues the police with this matter.

The Twin Falls Police Department finally made arrests of the two older boys on June 18, 2016. However, they have not placed a restraining order on the families involved even after the request was made by the girl’s family. Instead the perpetrators remain in the comfort of their own home and have been spotted running around the complex grounds.

In the meantime, the victim’s mother had to find a place where her daughter could be taken care of safely in the immediate aftermath of the trauma, but the family’s funds are limited and the little girl has to stay in the same apartment complex as all three of her attackers.

The police department and county Prosecutor, Grant Loebs, have not acted in a timely fashion to protect the victim and her family from the attack by the Muslim refugees or from intimidation and harassment received from the refugee community in the aftermath.

Twin Falls, Idaho is a hot spot for refugees, and the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) is the only refugee resettlement agency bringing them to the Magic Valley Region. Approximately 300 refugees were placed in fiscal year 2015, and more recent arrivals have included large numbers of individuals from Iraq, Congo, Burma, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and Somalia. Since 1984, 5,000 refugees from Iraq and Iran have been settled there.

According to Julie Ruf, a local leader and concerned citizen, there have been up to 200 local residents who have voiced concerns over the program for over a year to their City Council, Police department, and the CSI trustee board. They have received scorn instead of answers to their numerous questions and concerns regarding the refugees like: the welfare costs involved, the increased tax burden on local residents, healthcare, educational, and last but not least issues of national security and public safety concerns related to these individuals being settled in their city.

The local internet news source, Magic Valley, has published names of concerned citizens who dared question the program and tried to belittle them. If the MagicValley.com news site would print the facts of the Refugee Resettlement Program instead, they may have additional citizens concerned about the settling of Muslim refugees who adhere to Sharia Law within their communities. Incidentally, the mother of the boys involved in the assault wears a full burka in a display of adherence to the Sharia.

Muslim law states a woman’s life is worth half of a man’s, a husband may beat his wife, men are superior to women in intelligence and religion, and they can also be stoned for adultery. (See: Sharia Law for Non-Muslims by Dr. Bill Warner, Chapter 3) These families who are being settled by the tens of thousands and soon to be hundreds of thousands in our country have lived with the common sexual assault of Muslim and non-Muslim women and the lack of negative consequences for those actions.

According to a Magicvalley.com article,

“CSI’s president. Jeff Fox, stated the following last June about the program when opinions from legislators were sent to him out of concerns they were hearing from their constituents.

“There is nothing to hide or fear about the Refugee Center’s operations. There is a long and successful track record.”

There may have been a glowing track record before the Federal refugee program started admitting Sunni Muslim refugees into America from warring Islamic countries, but now there plenty of stories where they don’t assimilate into western culture.

Take into account the skyrocketing sexual assaults happening all over Europe where ever Muslim majority immigrants/refugees have settled. Sweden, for example, is now the rape capital of the West trailing only North Africa. They have a 2% Muslim male population with 77% Muslims perpetrating the reported rapes. It is doubtful Magic Valley news or the CSI pays any attention to those details.

Rep. Maxine Bell, for instance had this to say about concerns being raised about the CSI program,

“The history of incoming refugees goes back a long way. We should be a haven for people to express their own religion and freedoms.”

She continued about concerns from those in the community,

“I’m troubled that they would be concerned, I assume it’s part of a concern about the people in the areas where Sharia law is and where things are different. I hope that CSI is able to put that to rest with people who are really, really concerned.”

Do you think Rep. Bell believes the Muslim refugee boys who sexually assaulted a girl by knife point have a right to practice those freedoms now? Wonder if she would like male refugees with little to no respect for women settled in the same community as her family members or granddaughters? Realistically, however, our legislators are far too wealthy and privileged to live in the same vicinity as the refugees they bring into lower income communities.

Rep. Maxine Bell and all the other legislators who stand by and do nothing but parrot how impressed they are with the refugee program at CSI should be required to take a course in the doctrine of Sharia Law as well as the political ideology espoused by Muslims. Why is it that many regular citizens of this country are more educated on the facts and the dangers of Islam and their elected officials choose to remain ignorant of them?

Most legislators are silent about a program that not only resettles refugees who are in opposition to our Constitution, but is a threat to our personal safety and those of our families. These elected leaders place themselves in dereliction of their duty and should resign if they are not advocating for the safety of their constituents, not the least of which are five year old girls. But, they are far too concerned about the money involved in settling the refugees.

For example the Chobani yogurt factory, owned by the wealthy Muslim immigrant, Hamdi Ulukaya, from Turkey. According to a WND article, he wants to give corporate cash, lobbying initiatives, services and jobs to refugees. Thirty percent of his workforce is dependent on refugees being shipped to him from the Middle East and Africa. Sexual assaults and rapes surely should not get in the way of big business.

Just like this horrific assault to the body, innocence, and future of this five year old child happened because of a program championed by the College of Southern Idaho. Their naive belief that refugees from warring Islamic countries can be “vetted” and brought to live among American citizens without causing countless negative and traumatic consequences is incredulous.

The prime responsibility for this incident lies with President Obama, Congress, the State Department, and all agencies who willingly resettle Muslim refugees into America. From the president who has denied his oath of office by continuing a dangerous refugee program, the State Department whose job is to support Americans interest abroad, but ushers in the very enemies of our Constitution and threats to our national security and personal safety, our Congress who voted to fund the refugee program, and finally volunteer agencies who take money per head, funded by the American tax-payer, in order to place unvetted individuals among Americans.

This story reveals how Muslim refugees never can be totally vetted and there is no way of assessing the violence they will commit due to their ideology and culture. Yet, the Twin Falls local government continues to disregard the local citizens well-founded questions about the refugee program and the federal government continues to accelerate it, damn the consequences.

Idaho: Citizens defeat pro-Muslim Migrant resolution

Increasingly city and county governments are making themselves heard on the issue of UN/US State Department refugee resettlement for their communities.  We told you here recently about Craven Co. North Carolina considering a resolution opposing more refugees. And, then here in Montana, the Missoula County Commission opened the door for the resettlement of third-worlders from the Middle East and Africa.

In Idaho, a heated public meeting of the Sandpoint City Council in Bonner County in the far northern reaches of the state resulted in the withdrawal of a resolution to support refugee resettlement to the community.

The federal government and their paid resettlement contractors (listed here) will be quick to say that local governments have no right to say whether refugees are seeded there or not.  However, they do frequently say they will not place refugees where the refugees would be “unwelcome”

If Congress was doing its job there would be a major movement to rewrite the Refugee Act of 1980 (or scrap it all together) in order to give local communities a say in what happens to their counties, cities and towns.  I predict there will be increasing tension in towns across America on the controversial issue.

And, it’s not just about the prospect that Islamic terrorists might be in the refugee stream, there are very serious economic costs involved as refugees (as a special immigrant class) are able to access most forms of welfare available only to American citizens. They also add to the shortage of low income housing often pushing poor and disabled Americans to the back of the line.

From Boise Weekly:

Sandpoint mayor

Sandpoint Mayor Shelby Rognstad

Sandpoint City Council members voted Wednesday night to withdraw a resolution supporting refugee resettlement, bringing an end to a heated, month-long controversy.

Cheers erupted from the audience when newly elected Sandpoint Mayor Shelby Rognstad asked the council to withdraw the resolution from consideration. A measure meant to counter statements from Bonner County commissioners and Sheriff Darryl Wheeler opposing the resettlement of refugees, the resolution was intended to restate Sandpoint’s commitments to human rights, according to Rognstad.

“This resolution has only served to divide us and this community,” said Rognstad, as he requested the withdrawal. “That saddens me.”

Once again, anti-refugee activists turned out in force to oppose the resolution and, once again, the council meeting procedure was punctured by applause and shouts. When Rognstad called for order, the crowd responded with catcalls.
