Dear World: Florida Is Doing Fine

We have a friend who lives in London and has checked in on us to make sure we are OK. Why? Because we live in Florida and the international media, taking their cue from the national media, continues to report that Florida is boiling over with Covid cases and the state is overwhelmed. It’s one big triage.

A South Korean acquaintance of one of our children found out that we live in Florida and immediately had the same worries. Are you OK? They too had heard Florida is overwhelmed. Sigh.

Calm down, world. The media is, again, deceiving you. Florida is actually doing just fine, if you look at every single metric beyond new cases — which of  course are necessary in a pandemic.

Let’s start with some data at Worldometer, compiled from the CDC and WHO.

Report coronavirus cases

* – county website does not provide data

The chart above shows Florida ranks 24th in deaths per million among U.S. states at 273 per million residents, well under the U.S. average of 453 per million. The death rate in Florida is extraordinarily low. Note that this chart is tiny and hard to read because Florida is so far down the list of deaths.

That seems kind of relevant, doesn’t it? Good luck finding it in any “news” story. We need to start putting quotes around “news” because it is much more akin to Democrat operative spin than anything resembling news. Our friends in London don’t know this critical context because the reckless, partisan media in Florida and nationally only scream headlines on case count.

This chart above demonstrates clearly that Florida hospitals are nowhere near being overwhelmed by Covid patients. This is a far more relevant metric than case count.

Hospitalizations and medical facilities are not being overrun. Not even close. Hospital bed usage is very low and ICU bed usage is low. In fact, even taking the worst case projections at this point, usage remains well below capacity for hospital beds, and only at the very worst does it move beyond ICU capacity — which I identified in the chart — without hospitals making adjustments for surge capacity, which they would.

Even in the case rate, the only real scare tactic that can be used, Florida ranks 5th in the U.S., behind Louisiana, New York, Arizona and New Jersey. Anyone around the world terrified for friends in those states? The problem is that this metric is heavily dependent on testing. Florida is testing more than 100,000 daily now (it’s never clear if those are actual people or tests administered, but either way it’s a lot) and many states that had heavy Covid loads early missed untold thousands because testing was limited two to three months ago.

So the comparison is weak, yet still there are four other states worse than Florida.

Next we get to the totally screwed up death totals.

The chart above, compiled by Issues & Insights shows the totally wonked system of reporting deaths, as they come in late and in odd bunches, painting a ridiculously inaccurate picture of what is happening in Florida. There is definitely an increase in deaths in the state, but nothing like the spike being reported.

Part of the reason for this is that there was no system in place when Covid hit and so it fell to government agencies to quickly and efficiently create a system to help the medical profession in reporting deaths. Well come on, that was doomed to fail before it started. The reporting may be improving, but slowly.

Timely reporting of deaths must improve if they are going to be released daily. If they were released weekly even, it would be a much more accurate picture. But the media would howl about cover-ups and whatever other nonsense they conjured.

And finally, the much ballyhooed Rt factor is now below 1 in Florida, meaning the virus spread is on the decline, at least at the moment. The Rt factor is watched closely by geeks because it purports to be able to measure how quickly the virus is spread. According to the World Economic Forum, “The R number is a key factor in gauging the coronavirus pandemic. It refers to the ‘effective reproduction number’ of COVID-19. An R value of 1 is a crucial threshold.”

Being below 1 means the spread is under control. Again, at the moment, but remember, this is supposedly the moment when everything is going crazy in Florida.

And an interesting event happened yesterday. Another jurisdiction mandated face masks, this time the Republican-dominated Manatee County Commission, in Florida. During her presentation pushing for the mask mandate, Dr. Jennifer Bencie, director of the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County, told commissioners that the local medical community estimates as much as 48 percent of Manatee County residents may be asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic and spreading the coronavirus. That is an astounding assertion.

Bencie falls into the category of expert we are instructed to listen to. Since the experts say herd immunity is achieved at around 70 percent, although it varies from disease to disease depending on contagiousness and may be a little higher for Covid, then actually this is very good news. It would mean we are more than two-thirds of the way toward herd immunity already in Manatee County, which is by far not the hardest hit place in Florida. If true, this could explain both the “wave” of new cases (mostly just identifying what already is, or was) and the promising Rt factor.

Look, Covid is very dangerous for a very small part of our population. That is true with many diseases. The great thing is that we know exactly who is at risk and can protect them. Treatments are improving rapidly. For the vast, vast majority, it is another disease that is part of life. About half of people, apparently, don’t even show symptoms. Some feel sick, a few very sick. And a tiny, tiny percentage die.

But all of the data relayed here paints a picture of Florida that is wildly different than the media is feeding to the rest of America and the world. So to all of our friends around the world, Florida is doing fine, thank you.

‘Constant Gunshots’: Area Where George Floyd Died Reportedly Becomes Police-Free Zone Plagued By Gun Violence

There has been a reported increase in gun violence, particularly at night in the area of Minneapolis where George Floyd died, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

Police officers have avoided the four-block radius of South Minneapolis where Floyd died, the Times reported. The area contains murals and a garden around a raised fist sculpture, and the words “I can’t breathe” are painted alongside the names of other black victims of police violence on the street, according to the Times.

“What people aren’t recognizing is that people who live there are having a very, very challenging time from the unlawfulness that is occurring after the sun goes down,” City Council Member Andrea Jenkins said, the Times reported. “There are constant gunshots every night.”

“Emergency vehicles can’t get in,” she continued. “Disabled people are not able to access their medications, their appointments, their food deliveries, et cetera. It’s a very challenging situation.”

Ms. Dawkins, a mother of two who lives down the street from where Floyd died, said that during the day the environment is fine, but that she doesn’t feel safe at night, the Times reported.

“But when the other crowd comes at night, I can’t call the police, and that scares the hell out of me,” Dawkins said, the Times reported. “We have kids in this home, so I do want police to protect families … It’s a hard balance. I’m happy this incident brought change, but I want to feel safe.”

Dr. Jackie Kawiecki, who constructed a medic station to treat injured protesters, said night and day in the area where Floyd died is “very different.”

“My nighttime world, after sunset, I have taken care of double gunshot wounds, drug overdoses,” Kawiecki said, the Times reported. She limited the station hours after evading gunfire herself and after a pregnant woman was killed.

Nationwide protests have persisted since Floyd died in May after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes during his arrest, video shows.

A Few of the Democrats Biden Missed When He Called Trump Our First Racist President

My latest in PJ Media:

If President Trump is really a “racist,” as Joe Biden claims, he is one of the strangest racists who ever lived: before the coronavirus hit, black and Hispanic unemployment was at record low levels, the president has repeatedly hailed the achievements of black Americans, and Trump himself, before he entered politics as an unapologetic, non-establishment Republican, was widely respected even by the likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton for his work for the black community. But none of that matters to Joe Biden or whomever is putting words in his mouth: they want us to believe that Trump is a racist, indeed, the first racist president, because for years they’ve been destroying Republicans with this charge, however false it may be. Why stop now? But Biden has missed a few Democrats.

Rating America’s Presidents: An America-First Look at Who Is Best, Who Is Overrated, and Who Was An Absolute Disaster recounts that progressive hero Woodrow Wilson, for example, was born in Virginia a bit more than four years before the Civil War broke out. Throughout his life, he retained the racist attitudes he learned in his youth, and when he became president, he made them U.S. government policy. In 1915, the notorious film The Birth of a Nation became the first motion picture to get a screening in the White House; the film portrayed the Ku Klux Klan as heroes, denigrated blacks in numerous ways, and quoted Wilson as a respected authority.

Wilson was also quoted decrying the supposed “policy of congressional leaders” to “put the white South under the heel of the black South.” In response, Wilson went on, as quoted in the film: “The white men were roused by a mere instinct of self-preservation… until at last there had sprung into existence a great Ku Klux Klan, a veritable empire of the South, to protect the Southern country.”

The showing of The Birth of a Nation was indicative of Wilson’s attitudes: during his administration, government departments in Washington were segregated.

Rating America’s Presidents also shows how another Democrat, James Buchanan, presided over the dissolution of the Union in the years leading up to the Civil War, appealing to the South not to secede by adopting a full-hearted, enthusiastic endorsement of slavery and all it represented. On March 6, 1857, two days after Buchanan took office, the Supreme Court, under the leadership of Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, published its infamous ruling in Dred Scott v. Sandford, a case that had been brought by Dred Scott, a slave who had been taken into free territory and argued that, as a result, he was now free. The court voted 7–2 against Scott. In his opinion, Taney wrote that blacks were a “subordinate and inferior class of beings” who “are not included, and were not intended to be included, under the word ‘citizens’ in the Constitution, and can therefore claim none of the rights and privileges which that instrument provides for and secures to citizens of the United States.”

There is much more. Read the rest here.

Rob Bluey: We are joined on The Daily Signal Podcast today by Kurt Schlichter. He’s fresh off guest-hosting Hugh Hewitt’s radio show. Kurt is a trial lawyer, a retired Army infantry colonel, and a columnist for Townhall.com. Kurt, thanks so much for joining us.

Kurt Schlichter: Thanks for having me.

Bluey: You are the author of a brand new book, “The 21 Biggest Lies About Donald Trump (and You!).” We’re going to get to that in just a moment, but I first wanted to ask you to share a little bit about yourself with our listeners. You bring what I consider to be a unique perspective as a conservative, having been a stand-up comic, a military veteran, and now a prolific commentator. What makes you a conservative?

Schlichter: Oh, God, I was always conservative. I like to think it’s because I am not a halfwit. I mean, I just always saw the alternative as just ridiculously stupid.

Even when I was in like third grade, I remember distinctly watching the news, the Vietnam War was on at the time, there was some argument about, “We’re going to put big red crosses on our military evacuation helicopters and then the communists won’t shoot at them,” and I’m like 5 years old, and I looked at it and I said, “That’s stupid.” And ever since then, I’ve been conservative. Conservative is the triumph of reality over wishful thinking.

Bluey: Yes. Well, it certainly is. I feel a similar way. I felt like I grew up a conservative. There were some people who have those life-changing experiences, be it in college or afterward, and then there are those of us who have just always had, I think, the common sense to have those conservative ideals.

Schlichter: Yeah, I’m not one of those conservatives who’s like, “Yeah, I was liberal before.” I was never liberal, never happened.

Bluey: Well, it’s good to have you in the fight. Now, in your new book, “The 21 Biggest Lies about Donald Trump (and You!),” you call Donald Trump the most effective conservative president in decades. Tell us more about the book, why you wrote it, and how you’re setting the record straight on President Trump.

Schlichter: Well, look, I’m a trial lawyer too, among my other qualifications, and I get lied to by professionals, so I’m kind of a snob about it, and I just find our garbage establishment just so inept at it. I’m not sure whether they’re stupid or they think I’m stupid. They just don’t lie very well, but they lie continuously and it’s a substitution for actual reason and discussion.

So, my basic principle is I’m against arguing with people. I mean, as a lawyer, I argue with people for money, but then again … you got a judge, you got a jury, there’s people who are going to weigh evidence, apply rules, and you’re going to come to a conclusion.

You don’t get that with our leftist establishment. You get a conclusion and then they work backwards. So, they are impervious to reason, and for that reason, I don’t advocate arguing with them.

Now, argument and reason do have important roles to play, but mostly it’s for people who are not already committed. Most Americans aren’t like us, swimming in the cesspool of politics, and it’s going to be late September before they notice, “Oh, yeah, there’s an election coming up.”

And that’s not an unreasonable position, by the way, I’m not looking down on somebody who doesn’t do politics 24/7, in fact, I kind of envy them. And they should be able to, we should have a power structure that is generally competent, capable, and not corrupt enough to not pay attention to until about the last month or so before the election, or not huge attention to, but unfortunately we don’t.

But these people, though, are subject to reason, for instance, you can point out, “Well, the Black Lives Matter and the Antifa guys, they’re kind of toppling statues of Abe Lincoln, and that kind of shows that they’re maybe not being totally square with you and honest.”

And a normal person goes, “Well, I don’t have a Ph.D. in history. And actually, every once in a while I’d take a bong ripper out of my Camaro in the parking lot at high school before I went into history class, but I’m pretty sure I know two things about Lincoln, he had that cool stovepipe hat and he freed the slaves. So, I’m thinking maybe these guys aren’t straight with me.”

So, there is a place for argument left, but not with the garbage elite and the garbage who run our institutions, people in academia, people in the media, a lot of politicians, including some in our own party, and I propose to deal with them instead through the same way they deal with us, which is through the exercise of raw power. I don’t advocate lying about them, I advocate destroying them at the ballot box.

Bluey: Well, and with the facts, I mean, as your book lays out. Now, I agree with you, the media bears a significant amount of the criticism here, rightfully so. The anti-conservative bias is certainly nothing new, past Republican presidents have faced their share of bias themselves, but with President Trump it’s at a whole new level. Why do you think it is so much worse with him today?

Schlichter: Because he rejects the entire establishment. … If we had an establishment that wasn’t garbage, they would look on their unbroken track record of failure with a little humility.

I mean, rarely has America been governed, had its institution run by people who would be so justified in being humble, but they’re not. These are the least humble people, and they’re also the least accomplished.

I like to liken them to the third-generation heirs of Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller, right? They’re living off the trust fund of our culture. They didn’t build our culture, they didn’t struggle for it, they didn’t win World War II, they didn’t put a man on the moon or incidentally dismantle actual systemic racism. These are the guys who gave us Iraq, the Wall Street meltdown, and Grindr. These are not accomplished people.

We have an intellectual class that has boundless self-regard, but it also has an unbroken track record of failure, it’s literally done nothing, and we fired them essentially. We said, “No, we’re putting Trump in. We are going to reject the smartest woman in the world, the woman who is the ultimate embodiment of everything obnoxious about our establishment, and we’re going to put this wild man in from New York.”

I mean, how desperate did America have to be to vote for Donald Trump? If you would’ve said, “America’s going to put Donald Trump in as president,” 10 years ago to me back when I was still subscribing to The Weekly Standard, I would have said, “You’re on drugs. What are you taking?”

But we did because we were that desperate because the people who were running things were that incompetent, and not only incompetent, grasping at more and more power all the time, power over us.

I mean, if these guys were just taking a little off the top, but running things, kind of like the mob, I think we could live with it because if it was like the ’50s and you lived in a neighborhood that was run by the mob, your mom’s going to be able to walk to Mass and come back and she’s not going to get her purse snatched or beaten up by some scumbag because the mob’s going to take care of it, things are going to work. You don’t want to cross paths with them, and they’re obviously taking their share, … but you can live with it.

These guys want to make us better people. I don’t want to be made better people by people who are demonstrably worse than me.

Bluey: It’s a fair point. And I think one of the recent examples that you saw President Trump do and particularly take his fight directly to that establishment was his speeches around July Fourth, particularly the Mount Rushmore speech.

The Washington Post account of that speech began, and I quote, “President Trump’s unyielding push to preserve Confederate symbols and the legacy of white domination crystallized by his harsh denunciation of the racial justice movement Friday night at Mount Rushmore,” I could go on. There’s just one problem, that’s not the speech he delivered. It’s just totally dishonest.

Schlichter: Well, if they’re willing to lie about something that with two clicks on the Web you can double check, what are they not going to lie about? I mean, I see these polls showing Trump is down 15 points, incidentally, Dukakis was up 15 points over George H.W. Bush at—

Bluey: About this same time in July, right?

Schlichter: Yeah. But what’s going to stop them from lying about polls when polls are so opaque and obscure that you really have to look carefully to even start picking them apart without even getting to the point of assuming that the raw data that they’re using is even factual.

So, I mean, our media is so desperate to retain power that it has thrown away the only justification for itself, which is objective reporting. And this is emblematic of other institutions, we could talk about Hollywood or academia or the bureaucracy, but technology has changed things for the media. Let’s just focus on media.

Technology had already changed things, it’s already going through a huge trauma and the people trying to manage this trauma are, like I said, unaccomplished individuals with no competence or capability. They’re also corrupt.

So, the one thing that justifies their treatment with respect, as opposed to just a regular propagandist, they [are] like, “We are neutral truth-tellers who don’t care whose toes we step on, we just want to get to the facts and make sure that the powerful are accountable.”

Well, that’s great, and people like that, scrappy reporters with their little fedora hats and the little press badge and the hat, they deserve a level of respect because they’re doing a tough job. But they want that respect while also being propagandists for their friends.

And of course, there’s the incestuous relationship between these institutions, politics and academia and the media assuring that there isn’t a wall between them.

And look, I’m going to expect guys from CNN to light up their friends. They’re pals with these guys. They’re all a scam, and they’re all fighting to retake power back from Donald Trump, and they think they’re going to hold it forever—of course, none of them know anything about history.

I spent a lot of time listening to Roman history, Greek history, that sort of thing, Persian history, and history is full of people who think, “Yeah, I’m just going to end history and I’m going to establish myself as the permanent power forever. I’m just going to be really tough on people and no one will ever challenge my rule again,” and that never happens.

They have no idea of history, they have no idea of human nature, they lack wisdom, they certainly don’t have any kind of a moral sense other that delivered by a man-bun TA in a gender study seminar at Goucher College.

I mean, if you thought, “Maybe you guys could read the Bible, you might learn something from it, if not the religious part, at least the human nature part,” because I frankly haven’t read anything that better describes the conundrum of human nature than that.

They’re like, “No,” because they know everything, because history started when [Barack] Obama got elected and all those people from the past can’t change anything. It’s stunning arrogance of these people, it’s remarkable, especially when you consider how they are absolute losers.

Bluey: The late Andrew Breitbart had a profound impact on my life, Kurt. I considered him a mentor, someone who welcomed more voices and in many ways inspired—

Schlichter: Still on my phone. His phone number’s still on my cell.

Bluey: … us to create The Daily Signal, inspired you to be a contributor to Big Hollywood. What would Andrew say about what’s happening in America today?

Schlichter: I’d like to think that his critique would mirror mine because mine mirrors his. Andrew was a visionary and he understood the power of technology to disrupt things. And again, technology is one of the huge disruptors that was already, well before Trump, challenging the postwar establishment and the postwar structure, and really democratizing the exchange of information and ideas. No longer did you have three networks, no longer could you have gatekeepers.

And you can see how The Washington Post and New York Times, their columnists—other than Hugh Hewitt, who’s the only actual conservative on either of them—are constantly bemoaning the fact that there’s no gatekeeper, by which they mean, “We’re unable to set the agenda anymore. We don’t control what can be said.” And of course, by controlling what’s said, as [George] Orwell taught us, you control what can be thought.

Andrew understood the potential for technology to open up the Overton window and allow all sorts of troubling ideas to climb in. Not troubling to us, but troubling to the people who are fat, comfortable, and perfectly happy to continue failing as long as they kept power.

Bluey: Yeah, no, it’s so true. Kurt, I mentioned earlier your role as a stand-up comic, and your humor certainly comes through in the book, “The 21 Biggest Lies about Donald Trump (and You!).” Why is it important for conservatives and you in particular to make this part of your work?

Schlichter: Look, I make it no secret that I kind of despise the bow-tie conservative, the overly serious guy who can’t do a pushup and can’t crack a joke.

My feeling is, if you propose to be a conservative leader, I don’t want to hear a word out of your mouth until you’ve been in a fist fight, both on the winning side and the losing side.

Humor is an extremely powerful tool, and really, humor is the tool of the powerful, because if you can laugh at yourself, you are demonstrating invulnerability.

And it’s kind of fun because I’ll be on these things, and some are more serious, some are more humorous, and we’ll be making as many jokes about ourselves as anyone else, and we don’t care. When is the last time you heard a liberal make a joke about him, her, or theirself? You never do—

Bluey: Never.

Schlichter: … because they aren’t confident. Exactly, they’re frightened. You look at the late-night comics, they never make jokes about liberals, and hell, they barely make jokes at all. Instead what they do—I remember Rick Wilson invited me to go with him to watch him on Bill Maher. I’m sitting out in the audience and I’m not a fan of Bill Maher, but I’m there, I’m listening to his a monologue, and the crowd’s not laughing, it’s clapping, and I’m thinking, “That’s something, but that’s not comedy.”

And comedy is subversive, comedy is rebellious. I just despise watching all these comics apologize for what they have to say. Comics should be subversive.

Look, the institution gets fat and flabby if it’s not constantly getting in fist fights. I want an establishment that doesn’t have it easy, I want an establishment that appreciates what it has because it had to help build it, not that it just gets handed out as part of its cultural inheritance, which is what we have.

Bluey: When I think of a leader who gets in fist fights, certainly President Trump comes to mind. You write in the book about some of his virtues, you say realism, courage, common sense, and what you describe as an unapologetic determination to win conservative victories.

Schlichter: Yes.

Bluey: Looking back at the first term, what stands out to you as his greatest achievement or achievements?

Schlichter: I think his work on the economy was magnificent. He basically did what we’d all been saying, which is cut regulations, cut taxes, unleash the American people, and as soon as he did, boy, unemployment goes down to 3.5[%]. Every American had opportunity they didn’t have before. And of course, the elite hated it because they don’t care about prosperity, they care about control.

I also am very happy about his foreign policy in which he doesn’t go looking for wars that really don’t serve an important purpose.

I served 27 years as an Army officer, retired a colonel, I was active in reserve, I deployed to Desert Storm, I deployed to Kosovo after 9/11. So, when I think of American warfare—I’m also a graduated in the Army War College, probably their favorite graduate—I think of it as, if I can’t go to Omaha and explain to the mother of a paratrooper out of the 82nd why her son got killed in whatever place and why it was important to the country that that happened, then maybe we shouldn’t be there.

I am not a dove, I’m a hawk, but I’m a Jacksonian hawk. I believe we fight when we need to fight. And if we’re going to fight, we do it to win. And if you don’t have those qualifications, then there are other elements of national power, including diplomacy, information, and economics that you can leverage, but don’t ask us to spend the blood of our young people if you don’t think it’s worth winning.

Bluey: Well, it’s true. I mean, it’s very much an issue, I think, on the hearts and minds of a lot of Americans and one of the reasons that they’ve come to appreciate Donald Trump. Kurt, you mentioned your service to our country, thank you for that, you’re—

Schlichter: I was a colonel, I didn’t do s—.

Bluey: Well, you’ve deployed overseas, but you also have had experience right here at home with the Los Angeles riots, the Northridge earthquake. Could you share with us, our listeners, about how those experiences with the military shaped your own life and your own thinking?

Schlichter: Well, those were very interesting, both of them, and they both happened … Riots in April of ’92, I believe the earthquake was January of ’94, and I was with what was called 3rd Battalion, 160th Infantry, and that’s located in Inglewood, that is in South-Central, essentially South-Central Los Angeles.

And look, I’m a middle-class kid from the suburbs of San Francisco, this was not my milieu, but that’s where I was and that’s where my troops largely came from.

So, I’m this guy who has no experience in the inner city and I’m thrust into it in riots, and then later in the earthquakes, and what I saw really changed a lot of things in my mind. We were hugged by the residents of South-Central because by coming in there we cleared out the bad guys and kids could play in the parks, and people were like, “We couldn’t do that before.” And I still see that today, they can’t do that, but we had the power to do it.

And then during the earthquake, I remember we went out to an area where they had set up a relief area, but it wasn’t the government that did it, local government, the Democrats were spending all their time with the rich areas. This was poor people, a lot of them illegal aliens, and the Mexican radio station that played all Mexican corridos and other music, it was organizing relief for these guys, and I’m sitting here going, “Well, these are the guys who need the help, you don’t need it in Beverly Hills, yet the only people here are soldiers and these radio folks.”

Now, I love that Americans, including first-generation Americans, worked together to help each other, I like to see that and we need more of it, but it really gave me an understanding of the total contempt that our inner-city Democrat governments have for their own people, and I’m still seeing it today.

For instance, Los Angeles Unified School District’s absolutely refusing to open up, it’s condemning hundreds of thousands of kids to a lost year of education, and they don’t care because they’ve got to suck up to the teachers’ union.

And these experiences down there, I know that it’s not exciting, it’s not shooting and blowing stuff up, but these are experiences that just reinforced what I believe as a conservative to the extent that government should act, it should act on behalf of all citizens, not just the favored few, but that’s what happens.

Bluey: You’re absolutely right. And it’s not just the decisions on reopening schools, I mean, it’s the riots that are playing out and destroying many of these neighborhoods and the refusal of the local leaders to step up and do anything, which is why I think you’re seeing President Trump bring in, whether it’s Department of Homeland Security personnel or others who are trying to restore some law and order in these places. And it’s sad that it really needs to come from the federal level. It should be a local decision. But I think that their failure to act has led us down this path.

Schlichter: Well, look, the federal government has an indisputable—except by stupid people in the media who may actually even believe that the federal government has no right to go in and enforce federal law. But I don’t support Trump mobilizing the Army and sending it in to clear out Portland or Seattle, I believe in letting them stew in their own filth, but you don’t get to attack a courthouse.

And I know that the Democrats are outraged that Donald Trump’s not rolling over. I think he should send more forces in, and I love the idea of charging these guys of federal crimes because then the sorrow spot DAs can’t release them. And it becomes a lot less fun to a live-action role-play revolutionary when suddenly you figure out the U.S. attorney is looking to put you away for five years for crossing a state line to set fire to a building, and I’d like to see more of that.

These people are scumbags. These people are evil. There aren’t that many of them. Remember, this is a giant information operation. If you look at the mass of the United States, it’s probably five football fields full of riots right now, but you would think the whole country’s on fire. …

From my palatial corner office I’m looking out the whole valley where Los Angeles is, the whole basin, and I don’t see any flames or fires, it’s just not happening. It’s designed to convince us that we are out of control, that we can’t be protected, and that, “Gosh, you just have to vote for that creepy, old weirdo who lives in a basement, and then everything will calm down. We’ll be good if you do that.” And I like Trump pushing back on that.

Bluey: Well, thank you for helping to put it in perspective too. Again, we’re talking to Kurt Schlichter, and his book is called “The 21 Biggest Lies About Donald Trump (and You!).”

Kurt, we appreciate you bringing your trial lawyer nature and your comic humor to the book, it’s a tremendous read. It’s available on Amazon or wherever books are sold. We’ll also make sure we leave a link in the show notes. Any closing words, though, or places that people can follow your work you want to leave them with?

Schlichter: Oh, yeah. I’m a senior columnist over at Townhall, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, check out my stuff. Today it’s “Brace for the Backlash.” And also follow me on Twitter, @KurtSchlichter.

Bluey: Kurt, thanks so much for being with The Daily Signal Podcast. Best wishes as you continue to fight the good fight and bring common sense to Americans. We appreciate it.

Schlichter: Thank you very much.

Democrat’s Draft 2020 Party Platform filled with Extremist Socialist Policies

The Democrats are circulating their draft 2020 Democratic Party Platform. The document reveals just how extreme and Socialist the party has become.

Breitbart’s Joel B. Pollack in a column titled “23 Extreme Left-wing Ideas in the Democrats’ Draft 2020 Platform” wrote:

Amidst much verbiage, it includes many extremist ideas, including:

  1. “Systemic racism.” The platform begins from the premise that the United States suffers from “systemic racism in our economy and our society.” Having condemned the country they seek to govern, Democrats offer their radical solutions.
  2. Rejoining the Paris Climate Accords. The agreement did little but force the U.S. to cut back our economy while letting China and other nations off the hook. We are the only major signatory reducing emissions — without the accord.
  3. Declaring housing a “right.” Providing housing for everyone is a worthy goal, but declaring it a “right” is a socialist ruse that creates massive problems. Just ask South Africa, which has a “right” to housing — and millions living in shacks.
  4. Repealing right-to-work laws. These laws protecting the rights of workers not to join a union have fueled the manufacturing boom in the South, which has prospered while heavily unionized states have lost jobs and population.
  5. “Card check.” This system eliminates the secret ballot in union elections and allows organizers to intimidate workers until they agree to form a union. Even left-wing George McGovern opposed “card check” last time Democrats tried it.
  6. Raising taxes. Democrats want to raise taxes in the middle of a recession, falsely describing the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as a giveaway to the wealthy, when in fact the middle class benefited most. Higher taxes mean fewer jobs.
  7. Medicare for All. Though the platform adopts a “public option” — too left-wing for Democrats under Barack Obama — it “welcomes … those who support a Medicare for All approach,” paving the way for government-run health care later.
  8. Cutting police. Though it is careful to avoid the actual words “defund the police,” the Democratic draft platform describes minority communities as “overpoliced,” meaning they will cut police in the areas that need the most help.
  9. Gun control. Democrats have not wavered in their determination to restrict firearms ownership — even though the recent unrest made it clear there is no other option for Americans when political leaders refuse to restrain the mob.
  10. Preventing arrests at school. There is nothing racist about punishing criminal behavior. As Parkland dad Andrew Pollack noted, the shooter was protected from arrest by the school and police, allowing him to buy his murder weapons.
  11. Reparations for slavery. We fought a bloody Civil War to end slavery. Democrats want to “study” reparations, even though it would be impossible to determine who should pay and who should benefit, or how it would help anyone.
  12. Federal funding for abortion. Democrats want to repeal the Hyde amendment, providing for publicly funded abortion through birth. In one section, Democrats even refer to abortion as a “human right” — ignoring unborn children.
  13. Green bonanza. Democrats promise 500 million solar panels, 60,000 wind turbines, and 500,000 electric buses — in five years. It is an absurd proposal, ignoring domestic manufacturing capacity — and, for turbines, environmental permits.
  14. Restricting political speech. Democrats are reviving Hillary Clinton’s proposal to pass a constitutional amendment to restrict political speech to overcome the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United — overturning the First Amendment.
  15. D.C. statehood. Democrats want to make Washington, DC, the 51st state, meaning two permanent Democrat seats in the U.S. Senate. They hint at possible statehood for Puerto Rico as well. Republicans would be a permanent minority.
  16. Stopping the border wall. Democrats would abandon the construction of the wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, leaving it vulnerable to illegal immigration and to cartels. They describe the border itself as a manifestation of “systemic racism.”
  17. “Path to citizenship” for illegal aliens. Democrats want to turn millions of illegal aliens who have “been in the country for an extended period of time” — not just people who were brought as minors — into citizens with voting rights.
  18. Restricting charter schools and ending vouchers. In deference to the teachers unions that have kept urban schools in a state of permanent failure, Democrats want to prevent African American and Latino children from escaping.
  19. Rejoining the UN Human Rights Council. The misnamed Human Rights Council is a club of dictators that exists to condemn the United States and especially Israel. Rejoining it would be a massive setback for the cause of human rights.
  20. Net Neutrality. Our economy functions remotely during coronavirus because the FCC repealed Net Neutrality, which regulated the Internet like an old-style utility and discouraged investment. Democrats want to restore their failed policy.
  21. End the China “trade war.” Democrats attack the “trade war,” which has been successful, while claiming they will “mobilize more than half the world’s economy to stand up to China,” yet cooperate with it on issues like climate change.
  22. Returning to the Iran deal. Obama’s deal allowed Iran to become a nuclear power and did nothing to stop Iran’s militarism and terror. The Democrats would strengthen the regime at the expense of the Iranian people and U.S. allies.
  23. Paying Palestinian terrorists. The Democrat promise to “restore” funding to the Palestinians that was cut because U.S. taxpayer money was being used to pay stipends to jailed terrorists and perpetuate the Palestinian refugee “problem.”

UK VIDEO: Muslim Rape Gang Survivor Reveals At Least 500,000 Non-Muslim Girls Have Been Raped by Muslims

Ella Hill is a survivor of a Rotherham Muslim rape gang. Recently she was interviewed on Triggernometry, a British interview and discussion program run by two comedians, Konstantin Kisin and Francis Foster. During the interview, she revealed that Muslim rape gangs had sexually abused at least 500,000 non-Muslim girls. The victims were particularly white girls, but there have been many other victims as well, such as Sikh girls.

This is unbelievable. It is a national scandal which politicians still fail to mention. Many argue that the number of victims abused by Muslim rape gangs actually exceeds one million, but even if Ella Hill is correct and there have been only half a million victims, that is bad enough. Many more survivors of these “grooming gangs” are now speaking out. Their cases are unbelievable, as they explain how the Muslim gangs tortured and intimidated young non-Muslim girls.

The UK Home office has still failed to publish its report on the “grooming gangs.” Its reason for keeping the report under wraps most likely involve the fact that the rape gangs were made up of the wrong perpetrators, and targeted the wrong victims, for the mainstream narrative.

Furthermore, Ella also emphasised the fact that when she was abused by the Muslim rape gang, authorities and police did not even care in the slightest, because they feared being called ‘racist’ for doing their job. The scandals that have been exposed in numerous cities are horrific. The failure of the police is horrendous. Another survivor, Sammy Woodhouse, stated that when she was raped by Muslims, the police arrested her while she was in bed with the rapist, instead of arresting the rapist. That is how shocking this rape jihad is.

In this interview, Ella also mentioned that her rapists were ‘religiously motivated’. This is a key fact which many people, particularly Britain’s corrupt MPs and police continue to ignore.

The Koran advocates the rape of infidel women and girls numerous times; see verses 4:3, 4:24, 23:6, and 33:50. It also emphasises that Muslims can have sex with underage girls; see surah 65:4. These Muslim rape gangs have proliferated in numerous cities is because of Islamic ideology. This fact has been concealed by the elites, such as the Muslim former prosecutor Nazir Afzal. He denies that the perpetrators were committing their evil deeds because of Islam. He must know that this is a complete lie.

White non-Muslim girls that have been predominantly the targets because of another belief which originates from Islam, that white sex slaves bring a higher reward to their owners. Mohammed had a white sex slave called Miriam a Coptic Christian. This practice has been emulated all over the Islamic world through fourteen centuries of jihad. Even the supposed Islamic Golden Age in Spain included Muslims taking sex slaves, because they were emulating Mohammed.

It is absolutely disgusting how the authorities have allowed this to happen for decades.

Epstein floodgates open as judge rules explosive docs detailing Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex life can be UNSEALED in Virginia Giuffre’s defamation case within a week

This is getting interesting.

Bill is hiding under Hillary’s immense pantsuit. Move over, Huma!

  • Judge Loretta Preska in Manhattan ruled on Thursday to unseal more than 80 documents that Ghislaine Maxwell had wanted to keep under wraps
  • Preska said the documents – which will run to hundreds of pages – should be made public within a week
  • They include flight logs from Epstein’s jets, a deposition in 2016 in which Maxwell’s lawyers said she was asked ‘intrusive’ questions about her sex life
  • The documents also include police reports from Palm Beach, Florida, where Epstein had a home
  • It will include communications between Maxwell and Epstein from January 2015 when Virginia Roberts Giuffre made allegations about them in court papers
  • In the papers Giuffre claimed she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew three times when she was just 17 at Epstein’s command
  • The documents were part of a defamation lawsuit brought by Giuffre against Maxwell, which was confidentially settled in 2017
  • The case is separate from the criminal proceedings against Maxwell, who is accused of procuring girls as young as 14 for Epstein to abuse

By Daniel Bates For Dailymail.com, 23 July 2020

A judge today has ordered the unsealing of a vast tranche of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, which could shed light on his friendship with powerful men accused of having sex with his victims.

Judge Loretta Preska said that 80 documents – which will run to hundreds of pages – should be made public within a week.

The documents will include depositions from Ghislaine Maxwell, which could explain her alleged role in Epstein’s sex trafficking operation.

They could include details about Maxwell’s sex life that her lawyers have previously tried to stop from being released, relating to a seven-hour, 418-page deposition Maxwell gave which her legal team said was ‘extremely personal, confidential’.

In filings Maxwell’s lawyers have called the depositions a ‘series of (efforts) to compel Maxwell to answer intrusive questions about her sex life’.

The documents will also include communications between Maxwell and Epstein from January 2015 when Virginia Roberts made explosive allegations about them in court papers.

In the papers Roberts claimed she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew three times when she was just 17 at Epstein’s command.

The case is separate from the criminal proceedings against Maxwell, 58, who is accused by federal prosecutors of procuring girls as young as 14 for Epstein to abuse. She has pleaded not guilty and is due to stand trial next year.

A judge today has ordered the unsealing of a vast tranche of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein , which could shed light on his friendship with powerful men accused of having sex with his victims. The documents will include depositions from Ghislaine Maxwell , which could explain her alleged role in Epstein’s sex trafficking operation

They include flight logs from Epstein’s jets, a deposition in 2016 in which Maxwell’s lawyers said she was asked ‘intrusive’ questions about her sex life. The documents also include police reports from Palm Beach, Florida, where Epstein had a home

Although the case is separate from Maxwell’s criminal case, one of the unsealed deposition documents is linked to her perjury charge.

The case ruled on Thursday was originally brought by Roberts, now a 36-year-old mother-of-three who lives in Australia and goes by her married name Virginia Giuffre.

She sued Maxwell in 2015 for defamation because Maxwell accused her of lying.

Roberts said in court filings that Maxwell recruited her and other girls into a sex trafficking ring for ‘politically connected and financially powerful people’.

The case was settled in 2017 for an undisclosed sum but media organizations sued for documents in the case to be made public.

Judge Loretta Preska said that 80 documents – which will run to hundreds of pages – should be made public within a week

During the hearing at Manhattan’s federal court, Judge Preska said Maxwell’s right to privacy was outweighed by the need for the documents to become public.

She went through the dozens of documents, which included Giuffre’s depositions and various dull-sounding legal papers.

The contents however could be explosive and may contain fresh evidence against the wealthy elite who socialized with Epstein.

After the ruling Maxwell’s lawyer Laura Menninger asked for a two week delay in the unsealing so they could file an appeal in the Second Circuit in New York.

Menninger said: ‘There have been some significant changes with respect to my client’s positions and perhaps known to everyone listening to this, while we were speaking about a potential ongoing criminal investigation (before), since that time Miss Maxwell has been indicted and a trial has been scheduled.

‘Now we are in a vastly different position and have grave concerns about our clients ability to receive a fair trial given the intense media scrutiny around anything that is unsealed’.

Giuffre’s lawyer Sigrid McCawley said she wanted the documents made public ‘as swiftly as possible’.

Judge Preska said if the Second Circuit had not ruled within a week then the files should be made public.

‘Fascist’: What Top Democrats Say About Federal Law Enforcement Help for Their Cities

Democratic mayors and other leaders of some large cities have grown edgier in opposing President Donald Trump’s push to use federal agents to quell violence, using terms such as “resist” and “fascist.”

Some elected Democrats in affected cities have vowed to sue and even arrest federal agents as they criticize federal action to protect government property in Portland, Oregon.

For “Operation Legend,” the White House has announced plans to send federal law enforcement officials to Chicago; Kansas City, Missouri; and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Over the next three weeks, the Justice Department intends to expand the effort into Cleveland, Detroit, and Milwaukee.

Two regimes are fighting an ideological war in America today. But what side are you on? And how can you sharpen up on how to defend your position? Learn more now >>

Democratic mayors and other leaders in these and other cities mostly object, according to news reports.

Marching with protesters Wednesday night in Portland, Mayor Ted Wheeler was tear-gassed by federal agents. Wheeler said he was “pissed off” and called the situation “flat-out urban warfare” wrought by the president.

Cities across the nation have seen various levels of unrest and violence since the May 25 death of a black man, George Floyd, in police custody in Minneapolis.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who heads one of America’s most violent cities, previously opposed intervention by federal officials. However, after Trump’s announcement Wednesday of “Operation Legend,” Lightfoot offered a more diplomatic comment.

“I’ve been very clear that we welcome actual partnership,” Lightfoot said. “But we do not welcome dictatorship. We do not welcome authoritarianism, and we do not welcome unconstitutional arrest and detainment of our residents. That is something I will not tolerate.”

Leo Schmitz, chief of public safety at the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, attended the White House event Wednesday announcing “Operation Legend.” His jurisdiction includes Chicago.

Before his announcement on putting down violent crime in cities, Trump had mentioned the possibility of sending federal law enforcement to New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore, and Oakland, California, which are among U.S. cities with the highest crime rates.

“I’m going to do something—that I can tell you,” Trump told reporters Monday in the Oval Office. “Because we’re not going to let New York and Chicago and Philadelphia and Detroit and Baltimore and all of these—Oakland is a mess. We’re not going to let this happen in our country. All run by liberal Democrats.”

That same day, Philadelphia officials provided some of the most aggressive rhetoric, even threatening to arrest federal officials in the city, making fascist comparisons, and vowing to “resist.”

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said: “My dad volunteered and served in World War II to fight fascism, like most of my uncles, so we would not have an American president brutalizing and kidnapping Americans for exercising their constitutional rights and trying to make America a better place, which is what patriots do.”

“Anyone, including federal law enforcement, who unlawfully assaults and kidnaps people will face criminal charges from my office. At trial, they will face a Philadelphia jury,” added Krasner, who was elected in 2018 with the help of a super PAC funded by liberal billionaire George Soros. “It’s the least we can do to honor those who fought fascism, including those who are fighting it even now.”

In another interview with Democracy Now, Krasner said:

These are Pennsylvania offenses over which the district attorney in Philly has jurisdiction over that area, and we can bring those charges. The law is very clear. We can proceed with those charges in state court. Under certain circumstances, they might end up being processed in federal court. But, initially, we can bring those charges. We can pursue them. And as much as possible, we can put those individuals in front of a Philadelphia jury, who might have something to say about those tactics.

[ … ]

I would say President Trump is definitely a wannabe fascist. I’m not sure he can spell the word, but he definitely is someone who’s in love with dictators.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney didn’t push back quite as hard, but still resisted the idea of federal law enforcement assistance.

“The president’s threat is wrong on many levels,” Kenney said. “To send federal agents to police U.S. cities that have not requested such aid can only impede the work of local governments and exacerbate already heightened tensions in these cities. And to target cities that are led by Democratic mayors is clearly a politicization of federal resources that should outrage all taxpayers.”

“While the city of Philadelphia has not received any formal notification that federal agents will be sent here,” the mayor said, “we would use all available means to resist such a wrongheaded effort and abuse of power.”

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday that the city would sue to keep federal law enforcement out, Fox News reported.

“I want to be very, very clear that we will not allow this to happen,” de Blasio said, adding: “We are New Yorkers and we won’t take lightly if we see federal officers in New York City. If we do, we’ll be in court.”

Trump said “Operation Legend” is named for 4-year-old LeGend Taliferro of Kansas City, who was shot and killed in late June. His killer hasn’t been found.

Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith was among those attending the White House event Wednesday where Trump announced the operation.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, however,  called the law enforcement initiative “dog-whistling.”

“What we don’t support is an expanded and broadened mission, which is what we’ve seen in Portland and what we’ve seen hinted at in interviews from the president that look like a federal takeover of policing in Kansas City,” Lucas said, according to The Kansas City Star.

Sheriff Manuel Gonzales of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, a top law enforcement official in the Albuquerque area, also attended the White House event.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, however, told CNN that the law enforcement operation is “about inciting violence.”

“You almost know that something is up because one, the president is talking about Albuquerque, which doesn’t usually happen,” Keller said, “but two, we’ve been told nothing and usually we get formal MOUs [memos of understanding], we get details, there’s task forces that are put in place. We have received no formal documentation on this at all.”

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said a federal presence would be divisive, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.

“With few exceptions, protests in Milwaukee have been peaceful,” Barrett said in a statement. “It is preposterous to suggest Milwaukee needs federal agents to quell unrest or manage peaceful protests. Their presence at this time could be counterproductive.”

After Trump named Cleveland as one city that would get assistance from federal law enforcement, Mayor Frank Jackson’s administration told the Plain Dealer newspaper that it “has not been made aware of any additional federal law enforcement resources coming to the city.”

“The Cleveland Division of Police has in the past and will continue to partner with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to combat violent crime in our neighborhoods,” the statement reads. “In [December], the Division of Police announced the Relentless Pursuit initiative, which is designed to combat violent crimes in our neighborhoods with our federal, state and local partners.”

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan told local media: “Early on, we made the decision [that] the bond between the Detroit Police Department and the community was strong enough we could handle the protests ourselves.”

Separately, Duggan issued a joint statement with Detroit Police Chief James Craig opposing federal assistance, which said:

There could be no possible justification for such an action. The Detroit Police Department has had the support of the Detroit community in making sure our city did not have a single store looted or a single fire started during the protests.

Unlike nearly every other major city in the country, the Detroit Police Department never requested assistance from the National Guard–we handled our issues as a community. We definitely have no need for any federal presence being sent in now.

Although Trump mentioned Baltimore earlier this week, a spokesman for Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young told the Baltimore Sun that the city had no indication that the Trump administration had moved on any plans to send federal law enforcement.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf accused Trump of trying to distract Americans from COVID-19.

“I don’t need law enforcement in Oakland; I need testing, I need personal protective equipment,” Schaaf said. “We need direct income support for people who are out of work, that’s what we need. This president seems to confuse a political bent.”

VIDEO: When the New York Times covered up one of communism’s worst atrocities

A drama about the Holodomor, the 1930s genocide in Ukraine, is also a warning about fake news.

One of the great, universal truths is that everybody lies. From tiny white lies to great big whoppers, everyone does it, even babies. Don’t believe me?

“Sorry I’m late, traffic was terrible.”

“It’s so great to see you!”

“Doing well, thanks for asking!”

“I have read and agree to the above terms and conditions.”

These are just a handful of the easy, casual lies that we all offer up on an everyday basis. And much of the time, these kinds of lies are fairly harmless. These tiny deceptions are baked into most of our social interactions and, in many ways, grease the wheels of polite society. After all, how awkward and uncomfortable would our conversations be if we actually told the truth every time someone asked how we’re doing?

These are the lies we expect to be told and are expected to tell. And while I would personally like to see more honesty in everyone’s day-to-day interactions, I understand the purpose of these kinds of deceptions.

That said, the truth always matters. We may expect some level of insincerity in certain situations, but in others, honesty is more than simply suggested—it’s required.

When it comes to reporting news, telling the truth is vitally important.

The term “fake news” has been abused to the point of uselessness, but false reporting does exist and has for a long time. The information we receive through various media outlets and platforms is frequently critical for how we plan our days and how we plan our lives. When that information is false, intentionally or not, it can cause us very real problems.

Sometimes, the consequences are as simple and relatively benign as getting caught in the rain without an umbrella. Sometimes, though—and especially with intentionally misleading or false information—the results can be devastating to livelihoods and lives.

One of the most egregious examples of this was the coordinated cover-up of the Holodomor—a famine in the Ukraine deliberately created by the Soviet Union in 1932 and ’33.

In the span of a year, decreased output due to the forced collectivization of farms and the confiscation of foodstuffs by the Soviet army led to the deaths of between seven and ten million people, mostly ethnic Ukrainians. It was, in short, a genocide by means of starvation.

Freelance reporter Gareth Jones broke the story. He did what he was supposed to do as a journalist. He told the truth.

Unfortunately, Jones’s reporting shined an incredibly unflattering light on the fact that the news reports coming out of Moscow regarding the impressive successes of Soviet agriculture were false. Walter Duranty, the Moscow Bureau Chief for the New York Times, and the rest of the foreign press corps in Moscow promptly launched a coordinated campaign to discredit Jones’s reporting, despite the fact they all knew Jones was telling the truth.

Eugene Lyons, who was the Moscow correspondent for United Press at the time, even wrote in his 1937 book Assignment in Utopia:

Throwing down Jones was as unpleasant a chore as fell to any of us in years of juggling facts to please dictatorial regimes—but throw him down we did, unanimously and in almost identical formulations of equivocation. Poor Gareth Jones must have been the most surprised human being alive when the facts he so painstakingly garnered from our mouths were snowed under by our denials. … There was much bargaining in a spirit of gentlemanly give-and-take, under the effulgence of [Foreign Press Corps Soviet Official Konstantin] Umansky’s gilded smile, before a formal denial was worked out. We admitted enough to soothe our consciences, but in roundabout phrases that damned Jones as a liar. The filthy business having been disposed of, someone ordered vodka and zakuski.

It should be noted that both Duranty and Lyons were true believers in the communist cause and didn’t hesitate to use their positions as arbiters of truth to deceive the western world regarding the actual situation in the Soviet Union. As a result, around ten million people were starved to death during the Holodomor, and yet the Soviet Union continued to be propped up by Western governments and their investments. Furthermore, in total, approximately 100 million people have been killed by communist states since the Bolshevik Revolution which was allowed, in part, by the deceptions of professional “truth-tellers.”

This is not to say that bias, in and of itself, is to blame. Another great, universal truth is that everyone has some kind of bias. No matter how hard we try to be objective and relate only the facts, at least a little bit of that bias is going to show through. But there isn’t anything inherently wrong with having a bias, especially when it’s acknowledged.

The problems come when the bias in people we rely on to report the actual facts internally absolves them of telling outright lies to further their ideological goals.

This is not a problem of the past, either. Whether it’s an incident of claiming to have COVID-19 when they don’t or building an entire career out of fabricated “news” articles, the long and sordid story of falsified reports continues to this day.

This kind of “reporting” isn’t limited to simply lying, either. Blithely passing along uninvestigated press releases or unconfirmed allegations as fact also damages our trust in news media. Given how common such reporting is, it’s no wonder trust in news media in the US is only about 29 percent.

And then we wonder why so few people comply with suggestions and warnings given by the news media.

A commonly-offered solution to this problem with news media trust is fact-checking by a small handful of officially approved arbiters. However, the reason that Duranty and the New York Times, Lyons and the United Press, and the other members of the foreign press corps in Moscow were able to cover up the horrors of the Holodomor is precisely because only a handful of media outlets were considered legitimate.

Policies, regardless of who institute them, that centralize the distribution and judgment of truth would end up doing the opposite of what they intend. We would be right back to the bad old days of journalism where media monopolies could spread misinformation largely unchallenged.

It’s not hard to find some pretty spectacular fact-checking failures, and this is beside the fact that people tend to reject fact-checks that contradict their core beliefs regardless.

We in the US enjoy fairly robust legal protections for free speech and a free press, which, to be clear, is good thing. But what can we do when reporters don’t do their jobs correctly?

The solution is not to curb or restrict speech that doesn’t meet certain criteria. And it’s certainly not to limit the sources of various kinds of information. The only way to improve speech is to encourage more speech. We need an actual marketplace of ideas where consumers of information are able to judge for themselves what sources of that information meet their quality requirements and which do not.

The solution isn’t a single, official voice of truth. It’s billions of voices. It’s the competition of different ideas and their purveyors. It’s individuals thinking for themselves and accepting the responsibility that comes with that.

The reason the true believers of the Moscow foreign press corps faked their stories was that they feared the truth would hinder the cause they’d placed their faith in. But if a cause can be crushed by the simple telling of truth, it’s not much of a cause at all.

The truth matters and the truth will out, even in our world of “fake news” and clickbait.

But only if we let it and only if we demand it.

Jessi Melton, GOP Candidate for U.S. House of Representatives in Florida’s District 22, Dominates Contenders in One Quarter Despite COVID Restrictions

BOCA RATON, Fla. /PRNewswire/ — The race for Florida’s 22nd congressional district has picked up in pace. One clear winner is headed for the finish line against her Republican contenders. Jessica “Jessi” Melton is the only Republican candidate for Florida House District 22 that seems to be capable of taking on “The Squad” in Washington, D.C. The district encompasses the coastline of Broward County to southern Palm Beach County. Including Boca RatonFort Lauderdale, part of Pompano Beach, and Coral Springs. Jessi is a 32-year old telecommunications business owner and mother, positioned to meet the needs of the Republican voter in South Florida.

As with most Americans, Jessi’s road to success was met with challenges. After working different jobs, Jessi was finally able to achieve the American dream. Her leadership skills, and social media savvy, shine in this hotly contested race. She has been the target of attacks from opponents. Fran Flynn approached Jessi in close proximity on stage, defying social distancing restrictions during the Americans For Trump event held last week. Flynn does not have any financial data available on the Federal Election Commission (FEC). The tension stemmed from a claim that Flynn hired a blogger to author negative articles about Jessi. Flynn responded and admitted paying for advertising on the blog. The incident, caught on video, circulated throughout social media.

Jessi Melton is the leader in fundraising according to the statistics in the race against incumbent Democrat Ted Deutch. This may be why her opponents are resorting to low-blows. A review of the data available on the FEC website, www.fec.gov, shows why Jessi is feared by her competition and revered by her supporters. In this quarter, she raised ~$93,000, demonstrating her ability to connect with voters. This far surpasses her closet opponent. James “Jim” Pruden. Pruden reported $0 of fundraising in this quarter and only raised ~$32,000 in the several months after his initial candidate contribution. Darlene Swaffer would be assumed to be in last place, with only ~$12,000 raised. The only thing saving her from that fate, Fran Flynn. She has no financial data, putting her number at $0.  Melton is in first place, raising more in a single quarter than all of her opponents for the Republican primary.
