9/11 Survivor and Humble Christian Sued by the New York Attorney General Finally Tells Her Story In Court

ANN ARBOR, MI – Over eight months after first being sued by the New York Attorney General, and after a marathon preliminary injunction hearing that stretched over four weeks, Angela Braxton, a pro-life Christian and side walk counselor, finally took the stand late last week to explain why she spent years regularly ministering outside of a large abortion facility in Jamaica, Queens.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who complained about “a sense of entitlement by protestors to run their mouth,” named Braxton and more than a dozen other Christians as defendants in his federal lawsuit filed last June. The lawsuit asked a federal court to impose a sixteen-foot buffer zone around the abortion premises and levy draconian fines, attorney fees and compensatory damages against the defendants.

The Thomas More Law Center (“TMLC”), a national public interest law firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is defending Braxton and co-defendant Jasmine Lalande, another Christian sidewalk counselor, in the lawsuit. Tyler Brooks, TMLC’s lead attorney in the case, who conducted the direct examination of Ms. Braxton, commented, “It is a privilege to be able to defend these two brave individuals against the Attorney Generals’ unconstitutional assault on free speech.”

Richard Thompson, TMLC’s President, added, “After over a dozen witnesses called during the four-week hearing, the only picture of our clients emerged was that they were two humble Christian women peaceably making the last chance effort to save the lives of unborn children.”

In her moving testimony, Braxton described growing up in Brooklyn, New York, including being among the first African-American students bused to majority white schools as part of desegregating the New York City school system. She also explained having suffered numerous miscarriages as a young woman—an emotional experience that made her realize the preciousness of all life.

Her Life Changed After 9/11

Braxton further told the Court how her life changed after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. On that day, Braxton was working on the 80th floor of One World Trade Center. Braxton detailed for the Court the harrowing experience of trying to escape the burning building until she made it to the underground mall below the World Trade Center Complex. While trying to make her way out of the mall, she suddenly felt rumbling, which she would later learn was caused by the collapsing of Two World Trade Center above her. The force of the building’s collapse caused her to be “thrown around like . . . being thrown up in a tornado,” Braxton testified. In that moment, Braxton said,“I’m screeching for God not to let me die.”

An Associated Press photographer took an iconic photo of the debris-covered Braxton as she escaped from the fallen tower. That photograph now hangs in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.  To view the photo, click here.

Following the 9/11 attacks, Braxton turned to faith and became a Christian. Several years later, she felt called to start ministering to patients entering abortion clinics. In her testimony, Braxton explained why she used to spend Saturday mornings trying to speak to women who might be contemplating abortion:

“I believe because of what I went through as far as wanting so many children….It’s the worst thing. It’s never healed. You always long for them.  And I wanted other people to know that.  But more importantly, God saved me when I was a sinner. Christ died for me. He gave me a new heart, and He gave me a heart to love Him, to love my neighbor….Why wouldn’t I love my neighbor enough [to share this]? That’s my belief, and I believe God’s Word is true.”

Braxton, who has numerous medical conditions linked to her injuries from 9/11, also described being fearful of how a victory by the Attorney General in this lawsuit would prevent her from continuing to evangelize and spread the Gospel. If the fees sought by the Attorney General are assessed, Braxton said she would lose her apartment, but she courageously added: “I know God would provide.”

Federal District Court Judge Carol Bagley Amon will hear oral arguments on the Attorney General’s motion for a preliminary injunction on May 10, 2018 at 2:00 PM.  Yet to be decided is TMLC’s motion to dismiss the Attorney General’s case, which was filed on July 17, 2017.

Gun Control Rallies: How Today’s students have been Brainwashed to prepare for this moment their whole lives

How Today’s students have been Brainwashed to prepare for this moment their whole lives

Cataluna March 9, 2018: …In some ways, today’s students have been preparing for this moment their whole lives. Their educational experiences have been shaped by concepts like collaborative work, project-based learning, real-world scenarios, finding innovative solutions, and the underlying mantra that they can save the world.

In lower elementary, perhaps they’re taken out to a weedy, forgotten corner of campus and asked to imagine a verdant garden thriving in that very spot. And then maybe they’re given tools and seeds and time in their day to make that garden happen.

In middle school they might break into groups and build little cars that run on solar panels or draw designs for water filtration systems to solve the drinking water crisis in faraway countries.

In high school they write position papers on current political issues and practice debating both sides of an argument. They’re encouraged to form their own club if what they’re interested in isn’t represented on campus. They organize food drives for the hungry, slipper drives for the homeless, projects that have impact beyond their campus.

So much of what used to be taught in school was facts and formulas — information that is now easily searchable on a smartphone. New models of teaching encourage students to use this readily available information to come up with new ways of seeing the world, new solutions to old problems.

On Wednesday students in schools around the state will join with students across the country in a peaceful demonstration, a 17-minute walkout to remember the 17 people killed in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month….

DoE Teams with Democrat Women’s March to Push Anti-Gun Rallies At Least 20 Schools

HTH March 11, 2018: …The protest is championed under the Women’s March Youth EMPOWER organization. (In partnership with TEENVogue Magazine.)  It’s slated to begin at 10 a.m. across all time zones and last 17 minutes, to honor the 17 people who died in the massacre. Youth EMPOWER said it hopes the movement encourages Congress to pass stricter gun legislation….

Hawaii’s Department of Education … advised schools in a letter last week to create a designated “walkout area” for students wanting to participate….

Agpaoa said he decided to organize a walkout at Keaau “because no one else was.” He’s asking Keaau students to congregate along a fence facing the highway and wave signs. He said the plan has been approved by Keaau administration and he’s hoping at least 500 Keaau students — or at least half the student body — will participate….

In the Honokaa-Kealakehe-Kohala-Konawaena Complex Area, schools were advised to draft their own plan according to how they think is best, according to Superintendent Art Souza.

“Some schools might just attach 17 minutes to an existing recess period and others might decide they want a particular space and time,” Souza said….

Hilo High School is allowing students to gather on the campus patio during the designated walkout time and read aloud any comments they have about school safety or gun violence.

Waiakea High School will be passing out paper butterflies to students and encouraging them to write out their “goal” on how to make others feel included…

Participating Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science students will wear a common color and also walk out to a designated space, assistant school director Terri York said. York said the goal at HAAS is “to support students who want to participate”…

U.S. Senator CONFRONTS Twitter with Project Veritas Video

This follows our recent investigation that exposed Twitter’s disturbing censorship, “shadow-banning”, and anti-Trump bias. Now, Congress and the American people are taking action against Social Media Propaganda.

Take a look at Senator Ted Cruz confronting Twitter with videos from Project Veritas.

Watch now.

Representatives from YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter appeared at a hearing by The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. During the hearing, Senator Ted Cruz blasted Twitter with a transcript of Project Veritas’ videos.

Here’s part of what Senator Cruz had to say:

There have been several videos that were released in recent weeks that I, and a lot of other people, find highly troubling.

This is highly troubling, indeed: it’s probably why the Twitter COO immediately resigned when Project Veritas exposed Twitter.

And we’re just getting started!

These Social Media Giants are on notice –– if they don’t stop their shameful practices of censorship – then Congress and the American people will continue to hold them accountable.

Divine Providence Still Guides Us

Bevil Bramwell OMI: People (and nations) who lose their sense of history lose their way. And the end of history (and our own lives) is eternal happiness.

There is a very interesting line in the Book of Isaiah:

“Thus says the Lord to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand I grasp, Subduing nations before him, stripping kings of their strength, opening doors before him, leaving the gates unbarred: I will go before you and level the mountains; Bronze doors I will shatter, iron bars I will snap.” (Isaiah 45:1-2)

God’s prophet is announcing to Israel that even the pagan king of Persia is under God’s protection. And then importantly, that Cyrus is being allowed to conquer and shake up the existing power structures in the Middle East, “for the sake of Jacob, my servant, of Israel my chosen one.” (Isaiah 45:4) God was ordering human history so that the Old Testament People of God could be protected and advanced. There is a divine goal for them.

Remarkably God is guiding history, now as then, although we are largely unaware of it – often even doubt it. There are many erroneous views on these matters: God only works when I am attentive; the distant God set the universe going and then went away to play golf. Or worse, that history is only about me – politicians and other public officials, for example, who take office to add to their CV and not for the good of the country.

For millennia, God has been leading the whole of history generally, and the history of the People of God specifically, to a conclusion that he has designed from the beginning: namely union with Him. The contrary, incorrect, and impersonal view of history is that history is just random occurrences that lead to our current situation. With diverse variations, the latter view comes to us from the Enlightenment.

Why bother to understand history correctly? The short answer is that people who lose their sense of history lose their way, sometimes quite literally, as we sadly see in the cases of people with Alzheimer’s – but in nations, movements, and organizations too. Even so, the patient does not simply fall out of history, because loved ones gather round to help the Alzheimer’s individual – as instruments and objects of God’s providence.

Allegory of Divine Providence (and Barberini Power) by Pietro da Cortona, 1633-39 [ceiling at the Galleria Nazionale d’ Arte Antica (Palazzo Barberini), Rome]

Helping nations and movements and organizations that lose history to recover themselves can be as difficult, sometimes more so. But the fact of the providential nature of history helps us not to lose our way before God and keeps us aware that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves. The way that Vatican II expressed it was to say: “Fallen in Adam, God the Father did not leave men to themselves, but ceaselessly offered helps to salvation, in view of Christ.” With this we are close to the Catholic Encyclopedia definition: “As applied to God, Providence is God Himself considered in that act by which, in his wisdom, He so orders all events within the universe, that the end for which it was created may be realized.”

These are good neutral descriptions, but the real illumination lies in the goal of this vast history. The goal is the goal of all existence as decided by God, who is all good – so good we cannot second-guess his goodness. In fact, the Catholic Encyclopedia reminds us that the “end is that all creatures should manifest the glory of God, and in particular that man should glorify Him, recognizing in nature the work of His hand, serving Him in obedience and love, and thereby attaining to the full development of his nature and to eternal happiness in God.”

The key words here are manifesting, obeying, loving, recognizing, serving, and attaining. God’s Providence is already at work, with us or without us, and these are the activities of faithful individuals and communities, conscious of this divine history. In doing these works, even in the face of the most terrible tragedies, we fully develop our natures and reach eternal happiness.

Also, most importantly, Jesus supremely fulfilled these activities in his life, death, and resurrection. We join him in his Church where we participate in his fulfillment and learn to do these actions well.

Manifesting the glory of God takes us as beings with bodies and spirits into the moral use of our bodies and spirits. Internet porn, for example, contradicts both of these and debases us in both dimensions.

Meanwhile being in the right place at the right time, cooperating with Providence for the Church, our families, our neighborhoods, our country and other countries simultaneously serves both of these goals.

Providence has given us the Scriptures (history) and the Church’s tradition (another history). These long historical narratives are steady guides for us as to how to collaborate with Divine Providence. We should spend a lot more time becoming familiar with them than in aimlessly searching the web, where not only porn but mind-numbing silliness are, seemingly, without end.

In our time, various social forces are at work trying to replace our living sense of Divine Providence with the belief that an all-powerful state can tell us what we need and provide it. But even this effort at usurping God’s prerogatives is used by Providence because: “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

Manifest the glory of God with joy. You are borne by his Providence!

Sheriff Scott Israel – ‘We are Jihad — We are Hamas’

The recent shooting at a Parkland, FL high school is the result of failure on the part of many authorities who had both the opportunity and the responsibility to prevent it from happening. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel was the local law enforcement authority who arguably could have stopped the massacre before it happened. But he didn’t do that.

Sheriff Israel’s Department ignored repeated warnings about the serious mental issues those who knew the shooter reported. He also failed to ensure that his Deputies were adequately informed and trained on protocols for responding to an active shooting scenario in a school.

Perhaps worst of all, Sheriff Israel hired Deputy Nezar Hamze, who not only lacked even the most basic qualifications for the job according to Broward County PD’s own senior reviewing officers, but was and remains an actively-serving Florida state-level official for the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), HAMAS’ Muslim Brotherhood front group in the U.S.–for whom he conducted active shooter weapons training inside identifiable Muslim Brotherhood Islamic Centers–but obviously failed adequately to train his own Broward County deputies on how to defend Florida students from an active shooter inside a school.

No, Sheriff Israel: this is not ‘amazing leadership.’

Dick’s, Wal-Mart, L.L. Bean and Others Enact Discriminatory Policies in Response to Gun Control Tantrum

In what appears to be a bid to alienate a large swath of the American public in order to appease anti-gun extremists, last week Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO and Chairman Ed Stack issued an open letter in which he announced several changes to the company’s firearms sales policies. According to the missive, Dick’s will no longer sell some configurations of commonly-owned semi-automatic rifles and certain capacity magazines. The company will also refuse to sell firearms to adults ages 18 to 20.

These new policies will also cover Field & Stream stores, which are a Dick’s subsidiary that focuses primarily on outdoor recreation. Gun rights supporters should know that Field & Stream stores have no relation to the publication of the same name. Dick’s also owns Golf Galaxy.

In the days following Stack’s letter, Wal-Mart, Kroger-owned Fred Meyer, and L.L. Bean announced that they would also refuse to recognize the Second Amendment rights of adults ages 18 to 20. Wal-Mart took the additional step of purging nonlethal products that resemble commonly-owned semi-automatic rifles, such as toys and airsoft guns, from their website.

Rather than serving to protect the nation’s schools from violence, the recent corporate outburst against rifles and firearm purchasers serves to reveal an anti-freedom agenda.

Contrary to the inflammatory language used by those in the anti-gun media, the numbers make clear that the U.S. is not experiencing an epidemic of school shootings. While any school shooting is tragic, research by Northeastern University Professor of Criminology, Law, and Public Policy James Alan Fox found that school shootings have been declining since the 1990s. Further, in an article summarizing his research, Fox rejected the idea that a ban on rifle sales to those ages 18 to 20 could curb mass shootings because such incidents are so rare. Fox explained, “The thing to remember is that these are extremely rare events, and no matter what you can come up with to prevent it, the shooter will have a workaround.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting data shows that there were 374 murders committed with all types of rifles in 2016. That same year, 656 people were murdered where the perpetrator used only their hands and feet. 1,604 people were murdered with “knives or cutting instruments.” Blunt objects, such as bats or golf clubs, were used to commit 472 murders. There has been no word on whether Field & Stream intends to institute background checks on knife sales, nor whether Golf Galaxy will halt their dangerous practice of selling pitching wedges to young adults over the internet.

That there were 374 murders carried out with rifles in 2016 is tragic, but efforts to combat such a small number of fatalities in a nation of more than 320 million by further restricting rifles are destined to fail. The relatively small number of crimes perpetrated with rifles is one of the reasons why federally-funded researchers have repeatedly determined that the 1994 Dianne Feinstein semi-auto rifle and magazine ban did not have an appreciable effect on violent crime.

A 1997 Department of Justice-funded study from the Urban Institute, titled, “Impact Evaluation of the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act of 1994,” admitted, “At best, the assault weapons ban can have only a limited effect on total gun murders, because the banned weapons and magazines were never involved in more than a modest fraction of all gun murders.”

A follow-up study published in 2004 on the eve of the sunset of the semi-auto ban, titled, “An Updated Assessment of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban: Impacts on Gun Markets and Gun Violence, 1994-2003,” came to a similar conclusion. The researchers noted, “the ban’s impact on gun violence is likely to be small at best, and perhaps too small for reliable measurement.” The study also made clear that “estimates consistently show that AWs [commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms] are used in a small fraction of gun crimes.”

A 2013 Department of Justice memorandum reiterated that commonly-owned semi-automatic rifles are rarely used in crime and that further restricting their sale would be futile. The memo acknowledged, “a complete elimination of assault weapons would not have a large impact on gun homicides.” The document went on to explain, “Since assault weapons are not a major contributor to US gun homicide and the existing stock of guns is large, an assault weapon ban is unlikely to have an impact on gun violence.” The survey also noted that restrictions on the sale of standard-capacity magazines would be fruitless unless coupled with a massive confiscation effort.

Aside from being poor policy, in some circumstances the new corporate restrictions may violate state and local anti-discrimination laws. As First and Second Amendment scholar and UCLA Law Professor Eugene Volokh pointed out in a recent blog post, certain state and local governments have enacted statutes and ordinances that bar discrimination in retail sales involving adults ages 18 to 20.

Dick’s’ corporate counsel doesn’t seem to have considered this eventuality, even though it could affect business in their home state of Pennsylvania. Section 953 of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act states,

The opportunity for an individual to obtain employment for which he is qualified, and to obtain all the accommodations, advantages, facilities and privileges of any public accommodation and of any housing accommodation and commercial property without discrimination because of race, color, familial status, religious creed, ancestry, handicap or disability, age, sex, national origin, the use of a guide or support animal because of the blindness, deafness or physical handicap of the user or because the user is a handler or trainer of support or guide animals is hereby recognized as and declared to be a civil right which shall be enforceable as set forth in this act.

The act goes on to define “public accommodation” to include “retail stores and establishments.”

Fred Meyer’s policy could also face a challenge in their home state of Oregon. Section 659A.403(1) of the Oregon Revised Statutes makes clear,

all persons within the jurisdiction of this state are entitled to the full and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities and privileges of any place of public accommodation, without any distinction, discrimination or restriction on account of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, marital status or age if the individual is of age, as described in this section, or older.

The sale of alcohol and marijuana are specifically exempted from this section, but there is no such exemption for the sale of firearms.

Astute gun rights supporters will remember that this is not the first time Dick’s has turned their back on gun owners. Back in 2012, Dick’s made headlines when it responded to the shooting in Newtown, Conn. by removing AR-15s from its stores. In doing so, Dick’s reneged on a deal with AR-15 manufacturer Troy Industries to supply the sporting goods chain with rifles. Suggesting that their position on the topic was the product of political posturing rather than actual conviction, when Dick’s launched its Field & Stream brand stores the company made sure to stock them with AR-15s.

Further, gun owners who value their privacy have long-avoided purchasing firearms at Wal-Mart. In 2008, Wal-Mart collaborated with billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun group Mayors Against Illegal Guns to more thoroughly track retail gun sales. As part of the effort, Wal-Mart agreed to maintain a video record of all firearms transactions within their stores. Some viewed the changes as an attempt to curry favor with then-New York City Mayor Bloomberg in order to improve the company’s chances of opening a store in Gotham.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation estimated that in 2017 the firearms and ammunition industry accounted for $51.3 billion in total economic activity. With 100 million gun owners nationwide, the shooting sports are big business and the industry’s customers can exert a significant amount of influence when they make decisions regarding their firearms and ammunition purchases and their buying habits more generally. Moreover, retailers should be aware that firearms consumers exhibit a loyalty and political awareness uncommon to many industries – a trait born out of necessity. Let there be no doubt that America’s gun owners will remember the corporations that sought to scapegoat them during a moment of tragedy.

Planned Profiting: Abortion Biz Rakes in Taxpayer Cash

Breaking the law doesn’t help your chances for earning federal dollars — but apparently, it doesn’t hurt them either! If there’s one thing Planned Parenthood’s learned over the last few years, it’s that crime does pay. A lot, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO). Despite piles of evidence (some of it from the group’s own mouth) that Cecile Richards’s group was illegally selling baby body parts (after performing equally illegal late-term abortions), a new report shows the wrongdoing hasn’t made the slightest dent in its taxpayer-funded gravy train — at least on the federal level. On the contrary, GAO officials found, being referred for criminal prosecution didn’t result in so much as a financial blip for Richards and company.

Between 2013-15, Planned Parenthood, its international affiliates, and Marie Stopes International dug deep into taxpayers’ pockets, banking a whopping $1.5 billion from federal and state programs like Medicaid, Medicare, Title X, and CHIP.

But even more amazingly, four of the five Planned Parenthood locations that raked in the most money are the same ones under investigation by the FBI! Planned Parenthood offices in Mar Monte ($229 million), Los Angeles ($106 million), Pacific Southwest ($105 million), and Northern California ($104 million). The news disgusted a number of House conservatives, many of whom were part of the select panel a couple of years later that referred the organization to the Justice Department. Obviously, it’s offensive that taxpayers are forced to fund anyone that performs abortion — but we certainly shouldn’t fund the groups who break the law doing it! Live Action president Lila Rose can’t understand why Democrats don’t agree.

“This should not be a partisan issue. Even those politicians who support abortion should be honest enough to admit that taxpayers shouldn’t be funding an organization embroiled in such barbaric and likely criminal acts – especially when there are federally-qualified health centers where the money could be redirected to help more people. DaVinci Biosciences, one of Planned Parenthood’s partners in the baby organ trade, has already admitted to breaking federal law.”

Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), who, along with fellow Tennessean Marsha Blackburn (R) has been leading the fight to defund Planned Parenthood, is absolutely sickened by this betrayal of taxpayers’ trust. “Industry giants like Planned Parenthood perform more than 320,000 abortions every year, and this GAO report exposes that these atrocities are done at the expense of taxpayers…. Abortion is not family planning,” she added. “Abortion is family destruction, and the fact that $1.5 billion in taxpayer dollars is funneled to this industry is sickening. The American people deserve better.”

Most agree. Only 36 percent of the country thinks taxpayers should be forced to foot the bill for abortion. But I’m willing to bet that even they wouldn’t approve of sending that money to an organization that’s believed to have broken a long list of federal and state laws.

As for Republicans, 120 asked GAO to run the numbers, this report ought to light another fire under Congress to ramp up its push to defund Planned Parenthood. If Democrats want to stop the GOP, let them stand in front of voters and own it. President Trump has done what he can internationally and through executive order. He needs the House and Senate to do the rest.

Tapes show Broward County Deputy Sheriff told police to ‘stay away’ and then lied about it

The Miami Herald reported:

Roundly vilified for not entering a Parkland high school during a mass shooting, Broward Deputy Scot Peterson insisted publicly that he believed that gunfire was happening outside on campus — not from inside the building.

Watch this ABC News video report on former Broward County Deputy Sheriff Scot Peterson:

The recording from the call he made on the day of the shooting shows he lied about his role:

But internal radio dispatches released by the sheriff’s office Thursday show Peterson immediately fixated on Building 12 and even radioed that gunfire was happening “inside.”

And, just as school shooter Nikolas Cruz was fleeing the building after killing 17 people, Peterson warned his fellow officers to stay away — even as wounded students and staff lay inside.

BSO policy calls for deputies to engage an active shooter and eliminate the threat.

“Do not approach the 12 or 1300 building, stay at least 500 feet away,” Peterson said over the radio, according to the records released Thursday.

The second-by-second timeline and audio recording of police radio chatter sheds new light on the chaotic and much scrutinized law-enforcement response to the bloodshed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High on Feb. 14, the state’s worst school shooting.

#StopSocialMediaCensorship: Friends Don’t Censor Friends

The first social media site was called Six Degrees. It was named after the ‘six degrees of separation’ theory and lasted from 1997 to 2001. Six degrees of separation is the idea that all living things and everything else in the world are six or fewer steps away from each other so that a chain of “a friend of a friend” statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps.

Six Degrees allowed users to create a profile and then friend other users. Six Degrees was the seed from which grew social media platforms like Facebook, Google and Twitter.

The idea is that friends may freely share their ideas, beliefs, thoughts and personal lives with other friends.

Facebook’s slogan is, “Be Connected. Be Discovered. Be on Facebook.” For Google “Don’t be evil” is their informal slogan. But “You can make money without doing evil” is Google’s official slogan. Twitter’s slogan is “Yours To Discover.

All of these slogans have become untrue as Facebook, Google and Twitter began creating “community standards” and policies that embraced some but censored others. Facebook is actively preventing certain people from being connected. Google is making money by doing evil and some on Twitter cannot be discovered.

Many members of various social media sites use them as a means to distribute their political views, policies and positions (e.g. President Trump’s Tweets) to their followers. Followers become force multipliers in sharing the link, tweet, or web-page, with other friends. The six degrees of separation becomes larger and larger until it can actually change public policy.

How and Why is this happening?

How this is happening:

  • Each of the biggest social media sites, Facebook, Google and Twitter, have refined their community standards and policies.
  • Some of the social media have changed their algorithms which changes how searches on Goggle, for example, appear and which sites come first and which last.
  • Several of the social media sites have partnered with other entities, e.g. the Southern Poverty Law Center and Anti-Defamation League, to censor their content.
  • Social media sites restrict certain speech by its members, i.e. shadow banning, on their platforms.
  • Social media sites delete accounts based upon their community standards, when a site is reported and if the site is black balled by their partners as “hate speech.”

Why is this happening?

  • Social media sites have seen growing numbers of organizations with a political position and/or affiliation. These friend organizations are also media outlets and have grow exponentially both in terms of number of organization but also in the number of followers.
  • Facebook began as individuals connecting, now more and more like minded groups are connecting many focused on political and social issues.
  • The founders, senior leadership and/or management of social media sites have their political views, which they want to promote.
  • Those individuals, organizations and institutions that conflict with the political views of the owner/leadership of social media are subject to restricted speech or shut down completely.
  • Social media derives income from advertisements. Some groups are not allowed to advertise on certain social media sites because they are inconsistent with the political views of the social media platform.

Watch this video of Twitter engineers talking about how they “shadow ban” the speech of some members:

What can you do to stop this censorship?

Here are some ways to deal with social media platforms that you believe are stifling your freedom of expression.

  • Tell the social media site about your concerns.
  • Leave the social media site entirely.
  • Stay with the social media site and put up with their multiple ways of censoring freedom of expression, but understand that they are censoring.
  • Find a social media site that does not censor freedom of expression (e.g. social media site Gab.ai and search engine DuckDuckGo.com)
  • Create your own social media site.

We have created the following confidential survey to learn which social media site(s) are censoring you and how it has impacted you personally or as a business. Please tell us your story. We will publish another column on this issue of growing concern to all.

New U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Mission Statement puts Americans First

For far too long our federal government, and many state and local governments, have been representing everyone and anyone but the citizens of the United States.

As an Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) agent I became painfully aware of how the supposedly “broken” immigration system has been operating as one of the most efficient delivery systems in the entire federal government, rivaling the both Fed-Ex and UPS.  The broken immigration system has been delivering a virtually unlimited supply of foreign tourists, foreign students and especially an unlimited supply of exploitable Third World workers who bring with them Third World expectations of Third World wages and working conditions.

Over time the magnitude of the immigration crisis grew exponentially.  This crisis undermines national security, public safety and the overall well-being of America and Americans.

The Amnesty of 1986 that was part of the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) not only resulted in nearly four million illegal aliens acquiring lawful status and ultimately enabling those newly legalized aliens to petition to have their family members admitted as lawful immigrants, but encouraged an influx of even more illegal aliens who believed that if one amnesty could be enacted to “solve” the immigration crisis, other such amnesties would likely follow.

The immigration system became ever more ineffective and politicians from both parties made false claims that since there were so many illegal aliens in the United States the only way of solving this huge problem was to legalize all of the illegal aliens and secure the U.S./Mexican border so that more illegal aliens ostensibly could not enter the country.

Of course, while the U.S./Mexican border must be made secure, as I have noted in many of my articles and especially in my testimony before a succession of congressional hearings in both the House and Senate, our nation does not have four border states (California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas), but 50 “border states.” Any state that lies along America’s northern and southern borders are border states, as are those states that have access to the estimated 95,000 miles of the U.S. coastline and any state that has an international airport.

On November 15, 2014 the David Horowitz Freedom Center sponsored an event in which I was honored to join three true leaders in the United States Congress in a panel discussion on immigration: then-U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions and Congressmen Louis Gohmert and John Fleming.  A video of this panel discussion has been posted and includes a statement by Rep. Gohmert in which he said that my perspective on America having 50 border states was gaining traction in Washington.

It is encouraging when we are able to change the perspectives of our political leaders.  However, those instances are far too infrequent.

This weekend I was elated to find out that I may have had an impact on how the leadership of USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) perceives its vital mission in adjudicating applications for a wide variety of immigration benefits, which include applications for political asylum, lawful immigrant status and United States citizenship. This is a welcome change from years of inadequate leadership, especially during the Obama administration.

On March 20, 2013 during the disastrous Obama administration, I testified at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the topic, “Building An Immigration System Worthy Of American Values.” I concluded my prepared testimony with the following paragraphs:

I want to make this clear: Law enforcement is at its best when it creates a climate of deterrence to convince those who might be contemplating violating the law that such an effort is likely to be discovered and that, if discovered, adverse consequences will result for the law violators. Current policies and statements by the administration, in my view, encourages aspiring illegal aliens from around the world to head for the United States. In effect, the starter’s pistol has been fired, and for these folks, the finish line to this race is the border of the United States.

Back when I was an INS special agent, I recall that Doris Meissner, who was at the time the Commissioner of the INS, said that the agency needed to be ‘‘customer oriented.’’ Unfortunately, while I agree about the need to be customer oriented, what Ms. Meissner and apparently too many politicians today seem to have forgotten is that the ‘‘customers’’ of the INS and of our Government in general are the citizens of the United States of America.

I have referenced Meissner’s fatally flawed perceptions and guidance in numerous articles and speaking events in addition to my prepared testimony at that Senate hearing.

On February 22, 2018 NPR reported “America No Longer A ‘Nation Of Immigrants,’ USCIS Says.” Here is an excerpt from the NPR article bemoaning the removal of the phrase “nation of immigrants” and the term customer:

The agency’s new mission statement as it appears on the agency’s website reads:

“U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services administers the nation’s lawful immigration system, safeguarding its integrity and promise by efficiently and fairly adjudicating requests for immigration benefits while protecting Americans, securing the homeland, and honoring our values.”

Here is USCIS’s previous mission statement:

“USCIS secures America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system.”

The removal of the phrase “nation of immigrants” was announced to agency staff in an email letter from Director L. Francis Cissna.

In the letter, Cissna said, “I believe this simple, straightforward statement clearly defines the agency’s role in our country’s lawful immigration system and the commitment we have to the American people.”

He also explained why the new mission statement deletes the reference to agency applicants as “customers.”

“What we do at USCIS is so important to our nation, so meaningful to the applicants and petitioners, and the nature of the work is often so complicated, that we should never allow our work to be regarded as a mere production line or even described in business or commercial terms. In particular, referring to applicants and petitioners for immigration benefits, and the beneficiaries of such applications and petitions, as “customers” promotes an institutional culture that emphasizes the ultimate satisfaction of applicants and petitioners, rather than the correct adjudication of such applications and petitions according to the law. Use of the term leads to the erroneous belief that applicants and petitioners, rather than the American people, are whom we ultimately serve.”

Director Cissna’s understanding of the true mission of his agency is a refreshing change from those who preceded him and insisted that the adjudications officers “get to yes” and seek to approve virtually every application that lands on their desks.

In the business world, it is said that “the customer is always right.”  Bringing that dangerous notion to an element of homeland security encourages and enables immigration fraud, a key vulnerability exploited by the majority of terrorists who have entered the United States determined to carry out and/or support deadly terror attacks.

Undoubtedly there are going to be some employees as USCIS who will find the change in fundamental philosophy to be a shock to their systems, particularly if they have entered on duty during the Obama administration where the “customer” was always right.

However, the clear and unequivocal message that the new mission statement and use of terminology sends to personnel at USCIS and to all who interact with USCIS is that the priority is to imbue the system with integrity.

The 9/11 Commission Staff Report on Terrorist Travel detailed numerous examples of instances where terrorists made use of visa and immigration benefit fraud to embed themselves in the United States. For example, page 54 contained the following excerpt under the title “3.2 Terrorist Travel Tactics by Plot”:

Although there is evidence that some land and sea border entries (of terrorists) without inspection occurred, these conspirators mainly subverted the legal entry system by entering at airports.

In doing so, they relied on a wide variety of fraudulent documents, on aliases, and on government corruption. Because terrorist operations were not suicide missions in the early to mid-1990s, once in the United States terrorists and their supporters tried to get legal immigration status that would permit them to remain here, primarily by committing serial, or repeated, immigration fraud, by claiming political asylum, and by marrying Americans. Many of these tactics would remain largely unchanged and undetected throughout the 1990s and up to the 9/11 attack.

This new and welcome philosophy will help to deter potential fraudsters from filing fraud-laden applications by those who thought that as “customers” they could game this system.

As the number of applications for immigration benefits decline, beleaguered USCIS adjudications officers will have more time to more carefully scrutinize each application. (It takes just minutes to approve an application, but can take days or longer to deny an application.)  This will likely result in more fraud being discovered, thus deterring the filing of fraudulent applications as the word gets out. Deterrence through enforcement works.

Fact Check: What Percentage of Americans Have Concealed Carry Permits?

Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie claimed recently on NBC that 8 percent of Americans outside of New York and California have concealed carry permits.

Verdict: True

dcnf-logo

The Republican congressman’s figure holds up, although permits as a percentage of the adult population for all 50 states is lower at 6.6 percent.

Fact Check:

Many Republicans, including President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Rick Scott, have warmed to enacting new gun control measures in the wake of a Florida school shooting that left 17 dead. Recent polls indicate that around two-thirds of Americans, including—according to some polling—a slight majority of Republicans, support stricter gun control.

Yet Massie, founder and head of the Congressional Second Amendment Caucus, has remained steadfastly opposed to gun control measures that Trump, Scott, and even the National Rifle Association support. When asked about his views, Massie told NBC host Chuck Todd that gun culture is more widespread than he might suspect.

“You’re in a bubble. If you take out New York and California, 8 percent of Americans have concealed carry permits,” Massie claimed on “Meet the Press.” “And the people watching this show right now? There are a lot of them getting ready for church in middle America. Putting their guns on. Millions of them, they’re going to be carrying guns to church, and to family dinner after that, and they’re going to be safe.”

Data from the Crime Prevention Research Center, a pro-gun rights think tank, indicate that there are about 16.5 million active concealed carry permits in the U.S., only 182,000 of which have been issued by the populous states of California and New York. “Outside the restrictive states of California and New York, about 8 percent of the adult population has a permit,” a July report from the center noted.

The center’s data, which has been updated since July, reveals that permits as a percentage of the adult population is 6.6 percent for all 50 states.

The Government Accountability Office released a similar study about concealed carry licenses in 2012.

Data from that study, however, shows that permits as a percentage of the adult population (20 years of age or older) in states other than California and New York was only 4.2 percent in 2011, and only 3.5 percent for all 50 states combined—around half of what the Crime Prevention Research Center data suggests. (Although the GAO did not have permit data for five states.)

But due to a recent surge in concealed carry permits in the U.S., the GAO findings are outdated.

“During the eight years from 1999 to 2007, the number of permits increased by about 240,000 annually. During the next four years, the number of permits surged by 850,000 annually. Then, in 2012 and 2013, the yearly increase accelerated to 1,550,000,” a July Crime Prevention Research Center report explained. “Record increases after that: 1,690,000 in 2015, 1,730,000 in 2016, and 1,787,115 in 2017.”

Although Massie’s figure is correct, the permit data it’s based upon does have some limitations.

The Crime Prevention Research Center, for example, lumps the permits that states grant to residents together with permits granted to nonresidents. Examining overall active permits may therefore involve double-counting of Americans who possess more than one concealed carry permit. (Many states, however, have agreed to honor each others’ concealed carry permits to prevent the need for multiple permits.)

The center reported that states have granted active permits to 15.6 million residents, so the real number of permit holders falls somewhere between 15.6 million and 16.3 million, according to its July report. The lower bound translates to 7.7 percent of the adult population outside of New York and California.

While millions of Americans have applied for concealed carry permits over the last decade, many states have scrapped the need for one altogether.

Just one state, Vermont, allowed constitutional or permit-less concealed carry in 2003. Eleven more states have passed or implemented permit-less carry laws in the time since. More than half of these states—IdahoNorth DakotaMissouriMississippiNew Hampshire, and West Virginia—have done so in the past two calendar years alone.

Studies suggest, however, that only a fraction of Americans who conceal carry actually do so on a routine basis. A recent study of 2015 survey data estimated that 9 million Americans carry at least once a month, while only 3 million do every day—about 1.2 percent of the American adult population.

I Go to a School Where an Attack Was Foiled. Here’s Why I’m Against Limiting Gun Rights.

Police cars surrounded my high school as I walked fast across the street to the science building. Eyes were glancing in many directions. The slight panic—bordering on hysteria—was obvious.

Hundreds of students stayed home, but I did not. Why? Because the threat was safely locked away in jail.

Four months before the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, my own school in Cherokee County, Georgia, was under serious threat in October from two 17-year-old students.

Together, the two juniors at Etowah High School planned a Columbine-style attack using explosives, law enforcement authorities said.

But campus police and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office learned about the pair’s plans ahead of time through a tip, and reacted immediately to the first report. The two students are charged as adults with attempted murder and other offenses.

If that threat had not been stopped, many people at my school would be dead. It could have been me, my brother, my closest friends, or all of us.

But it was stopped. We are alive.

Having this perspective, my heart was shattered into pieces when I heard the news Feb. 14 about Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. I have been praying for all of the students, teachers, and families who are going through hell right now.

“Take away gun rights. Something needs to be done,” my friends keep telling me.

Yes, something absolutely does need to be done, but not that way.

Reports and tips need to be taken seriously. Death is an unchangeable thing, and anyone who jokes about it is sick. A threat is not a joke; it is illegal, and it demands an immediate response.

Next, teachers should be trained and armed with guns, if they choose to be. I am constantly hearing friends say that if teachers were armed, they would be too scared to shoot back. That is an offensive statement, and it needs to stop.

A coach at Douglas High died because he ran into the shooting and jumped in front of a bullet. How could anyone say that man would have been afraid to shoot back? He chose to die so his students didn’t have to, yet people say teachers would have been hiding if they had guns.

Taking away gun rights isn’t going to help the cause. Immediately after our Founding Fathers listed our God-given rights, they decided that every American’s right “to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Everyone needs a way to defend himself or herself. I realize that many people simply want to add restrictions to buying a gun for everyone, which I thought seemed reasonable at first until I researched it.

Some of the most infamous shooters were approved to buy a gun because their previous felonies had not been reported to gun shop owners. Those shooters should not have been approved, but they were.

The system of background checks needs to be tightened to include felons and those who courts say are mentally ill.

Taking away Second Amendment rights from everyone is not the solution.
