In 1994 the 30-year-old Harris was dating 60-year-old Willie Brown, who at that time was the Democratic speaker of the California State Assembly, making him one of the most powerful politicians in the state. Brown had been separated but not divorced from his wife since the 1980s. In June of ’94, Harris took a leave of absence from her job as a deputy prosecutor in Alameda County and was appointed by Harris to a $97,000-per-year position with the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (CUIAB). Harris then resigned from that board five months later and was immediately appointed by Brown to a $70,000-per-year job with the California Medical Assistance Commission (CMAC), a post she would hold until 1998. Harris had no medical background whatsoever when she joined the CMAC, which was noteworthy in light of the fact that Commission members were technically required to have experience in health-and-medical-related fields. Moreover, all the other CMAC members were former state officials who were either nearing retirement or already semi-retired, thus Harris was approximately three decades younger than anyone else on the Commission. According to former California Republican state assemblyman Brett Granlund: “Both boards [CUIAB and CMAC] are reserved for political payback or occasionally for personal rewards for personal service. The boards are considered plumb appointments as they require no work, no policy credentials, and are paid the equivalent of a full-time [state] senator for arriving at a one-to-two-hour meeting each month.”

Trump Stands Between You and the Poverty the Democrats Have Ready for You

My latest at PJ Media:

Speaking at the Whirlpool Manufacturing Plant in Clyde, Ohio, on Thursday, President Donald Trump once again articulated the guiding principle of his administration: “The duty of a president is to put this nation’s own citizens first. That’s why my administration swears by two simple, but crucial rules, buy American and hire American.” His twilight struggle with the Democrats over the future of the nation, or whether the nation will even have a future at all, is coming down to the question of whether that principle will be upheld and defended, or consigned forever to the dustbin of history.

Trump drew the battle lines sharply at Whirlpool, charging that “on the question of foreign trade, previous leaders were guided by a shameful policy of capitulation, submission, and retreat…. For decades, you watched as politicians let foreign nations steal our jobs, loot our factories, and plunder the crown jewels of the US economy….For eight years, Whirlpool begged the Obama-Biden administration who did nothing to protect American workers from the flagrant dumping of foreign washers, dryers into America. But your cries for help fell on deaf ears. You didn’t see any action. They didn’t act, they didn’t care, and they never will.”

They didn’t care because they were among the beneficiaries of the pole-axing of American workers and the outsourcing of American industries. And it has been known for decades. That noted economist Sid Vicious sang back in 1977 about “a cheap holiday in other people’s misery,” and the leftist establishment moved quickly from cheap holidays in other people’s misery to cheap labor in other people’s misery. The labor is cheaper outside the United States, so American workers had to lose their jobs to provide low prices for rich and powerful socialist internationalists. Another farsighted economist, Bob Dylan, noticed this in 1983, singing about a woman in Brazil crafting furniture for import into the United States and “bringin’ home thirty cents a day to a family of twelve, you know, that’s a lot of money to her.”

This has been a struggle for practically as long as there has been a United States. The new book Rating America’s Presidents: An America-First Look at Who Is Best, Who Is Overrated, and Who Was An Absolute Disaster details how the struggle between advocates of free trade and the supporters of high tariffs has been the key element of numerous presidential elections, including that of 1888, when the Republican platform declared: “We are uncompromisingly in favor of the American system of protection. We protest against its destruction, as proposed by the President and his party. They serve the interests of Europe; we will support the interests of America.” Republican marchers held aloft banners saying that Democratic candidate Grover “Cleveland Runs Well in England” and “We Are Not Going to Vote Away Our Wages.” They argued that lowering tariffs would mean the end of American prosperity. Although the Republican candidate Benjamin Harrison won the election, this message didn’t exactly resonate with the American voter, who was also hearing from the Democrats that low tariffs would mean low prices.

There is much more. Read the rest here.

Sixties Radicals Pass their Hatred on to a New Generation

Hard-core true believers didn’t go away. Some of them became university lecturers.

One of the advantages of aging is that you actually can witness history “rhyming,” see the same ideas and events recycle through culture and, sometimes, witness the same consequences.

When I was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, there were two kinds of counterculture revolutionaries. First, there were the hippies, spoiled suburban kids like myself who listened to folk rock music and dreamed of a life closer to nature. This was mostly just a fad and, for most, it didn’t stick. The playful hippies, who smoked pot but didn’t wish anyone harm, soon outgrew their bell bottoms and love beads and grew up to be lawyers and investment bankers.

But there was another, smaller, more sinister group in the 1970s for whom the counterculture was not a mere fashion statement. They were hard-core Marxist true believers who, brainwashed by such left-wing radicals as Herbert Marcuse and George Jackson, genuinely despised America and her founding ideals of freedom and equality under the law.

These people didn’t live in tipis in the woods. They planted bombs in the U.S. capitol, Pentagon and State Department, ambushed policemurdered black officials they deemed insufficiently loyal to the cause, sought “asylum” in places like North Vietnam and Cuba, and talked openly of igniting race wars as a means of destroying capitalist society.

Virtually all “anti-fascist” communists of one form or another, given to street brawls with the police, these self-styled urban commandos had names like the Students for a Democratic Society, the Weather Underground, the Black Panthers, the Symbionese Liberation Army, Black Muslims, and the Black Liberation Army.

They openly promoted violence and hatred of “Amerika.” They said Martin Luther King’s ideal of a colorblind society was merely another form of white supremacy. They insisted, like Mao, that political power comes out of the barrel of a gun.

If you think society is unraveling today, try living in the 1970s — the era of plane hijackings, race riots and seemingly daily bombings of federal institutions.

I remember very clearly when Patty Hearst, the heiress, was kidnapped in 1974. I was seventeen and in my junior year at a Catholic high school.

She was only two years older than I was, and yet, after she was brainwashed by her captors, there Patty was on the evening news, brandishing her sawed-off M-1 rifle during a bank robbery. In a chilling 1975 film called Katharine, Sissy Spacek portrayed this type of brainwashed white girl who joins a violent underground terror cell, loosely based on the Weather Underground’s Diana Oughton.

Well, you know the rest of the story.

Most of sane America recoiled from these would-be communist revolutionaries — opposed, as they were, to everything America represented. Even the Beatles mocked them (“You say you want a Revolution?”).

The country elected law and order candidates like Richard Nixon in 1968 and 1972 and Ronald Reagan in 1980, vigilante movies like Dirty Harry (1971) and Death Wish (1974) became popular, and people even began to reconsider the whole drug and free love culture that, some suspected, may have led to this insanity.

Yet the hard-core true believers didn’t go away: after serving time in some cases for their crimes, they began the “long march through the institutions” advocated by the Italian Marxist theoretician Antonio Gramsci.

Having failed to overthrow society directly, the urban commandos infiltrated America’s schools, newspapers, TV networks, and board rooms. The members of the Weather Underground, like founders Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, became “educators” and lawyers, and hob-nobbed with future president Barack Obama, who himself became a “community organizer”.

The hard-left revolutionaries who built bombs in the 1970s went on to join college faculties and the media, brainwashing a whole new generation of impressionable kids with their hatred of peaceful “suburban” society. Many are now in their 70s and 80s, demented former radicals who show up at Black Lives Matters demonstrations and yell insults at the police, just like when they were seventeen.

Their messages are the same today as they were in the 1970s: America is racist to the corepolice are the enemydemocracy is a con, and violence is necessary to effect political change.
Their children, as well, have taken up the cause of screaming insults at police and undermining America’s democratic institutions from within.

Chesa Boudin, the son of Weathermen Kathy Boudin and David Gilbert — convicted of killing two police officers and a security guard during a 1981 robbery of a Brinks armored car — is now the San Francisco District Attorney. Like his parents, Boudin believes the criminal justice system is inherently racist and advocates eliminating cash bail, emptying the prisons, and prosecuting members of the country’s border police.

Yet just as the riots and domestic terrorism of the 1970s filled America with revulsion, so, too, the “mostly peaceful protesters” of today — the rioters in the streets of Portland and those tearing down monuments of America’s founding fathers — are also triggering a massive backlash among ordinary Americans of all colors. A recent Gallup survey found that, contrary to what the controlled media claim, most black Americans want the same or more police in their neighborhoods, not less.

Bottom line: America is a center-right country that cherishes her democratic history and institutions. You can peacefully protest all you want (it’s a right guaranteed in the First Amendment), but the moment you start throwing bricks and burning down buildings, you lose the argument with ordinary Americans.

That is the lesson that the Sixties radicals who bombed buildings and murdered police officers, and their many sympathizers in the media and academia, never learned.

SOTN Editor’s Note: It must be pointed out that one of the easiest, quickest and most effective ways of destroying any politician’s career is to plant child pornography on their computer or smartphone.  Or, to maliciously accuse them of child sexual abuse, or falsely charge them with a sex crime related to a child or minor, or defame their character with a baseless allegation of sexual impropriety toward an underaged individual.  Each of these smearing tactics are routinely used by The Powers That Be who manipulate the Pedogate control mechanism that is used to coerce and blackmail political leaders around the world.  This multi-decade control system is especially utilized to forever ruin political careers of those individuals who have left the reservation of political correctness. (See: PEDOGATE: A Global Child Trafficking and Exploitation Crime Syndicate)  In light of this stark reality, we leave it to each reader to decide which of the preceding cases are in fact true; and which were fabricated by the prosecuting authorities.

Vote by Mail? No Thanks!

There are several reasons to be suspect of mail-in voting, including a dismal 2020 showing in New York’s botched June 23 primary.

As a general rule, whatever comes cheap and easy isn’t highly valued. Yet some people these days want to take something once cherished—sacrificed for with oceans of blood and treasure—and reduce it to nothing more than a short walk to the mailbox.

I am referring to the act of voting.

About 110 billion human beings have lived on this planet since Adam and Eve. What portion of that total do you suppose were empowered to cast a secret ballot in a free and fair election? I doubt it was even as much as six or seven percent.

Where do you stand on the question of mail-in voting for this November’s election? It is a hot topic right now, propelled to the fore by the pandemic. One side says that since we are supposed to keep our distance, casting our ballots by mail will avoid circumstances that could spread the virus. The main argument from the other side is that mail-in voting presents unacceptable risks of fraud, dysfunction and uncertainty that would jeopardize the integrity of the electoral process.

Personally, I think those risks are real. Just because a mailed-in ballot gets delivered to the right place at the right time does not mean there wasn’t some hanky-panky at the moment the boxes were checked. But I do know that when you show up at a polling place, it is you and only you who’s checking those boxes in the privacy of the booth.

It took more than a month for the results of several races in the June 23 New York primary to be known, all because of a surge in virus-related mail-in balloting. Roughly 20 percent of mail ballots were ultimately rejected during the certification process.

Imagine the potential for confusion and abuse if vote-by-mailman were mandated nationwide for legislative, congressional, and presidential contests. Moreover, I am suspicious of the idea because those who are calling for it are pretty much the same crowd that doesn’t want a voter to ever have to produce identification. I think they realize that anything that makes fraud more feasible will help their political party—which is a sad commentary on that party.

In a recent commentary, the Heritage Foundation’s Hans Spakovsky argued that “Americans should insist on their right to vote in-person in their polling places in November, where they can be sure their ballots are safely received and counted.”

He reasons as follows:

Mail-in ballots are the ballots most vulnerable to being altered, stolen, or forged. Just look at the current investigation going on in Paterson, N.J., over a recent municipal election conducted entirely by mail.

Four Paterson residents have already been charged with criminal election fraud, including a councilman and councilman-elect. Evidence is surfacing of everything from voters reporting that they never received their absentee ballots (even though they are recorded as having voted) to accusations that one of the campaigns may have submitted fraudulent ballots.

Mail-in ballots also have a higher rejection rate than votes cast in person. In the Paterson case, election officials apparently rejected one in five ballots for everything from signatures on the ballots not matching the signatures of voters on file, to ballots not complying with the technical rules that apply to absentee ballots.

What about the virus, you ask? No problem. We can add a few extra polling places if necessary. We can wear masks and stand a few feet apart. We can early vote in most states. And if you know you will be out of town or ill on Election Day, you can vote absentee—a legitimate option no one objects to when it’s necessary and minimal. If the virus nonetheless adds some inconvenience to the voting process, so be it. You can complain about that some day to people who live where they can’t vote at all, or to your 95-year-old grandfather who dodged hellfire on Hacksaw Ridge.

Do not mis-read me. I am not one of those folks who thinks voting, no matter who or what you vote for, is holy writ. I would never support mandatory voting, as a few countries have. I’ve even defended a principled non-voter’s right to send a message by not voting. I urge lazy or thoughtless people to get up to speed or leave the vote to others more serious about public affairs. And to those who see voting as their license for legalized plunder, I say clean up your character or stay home.

What I am against are these two evils: corrupting the process to serve the interests of crooks who lust for power and demeaning it by requiring no real effort.

If mass mail-in voting takes hold in this country, we can add yet another of our hard-won rights to the growing pile we don’t much care for anymore. And if a walk to the mailbox gets too onerous, we could just vote by phone. Punch a few buttons from the convenience of our recliners and bingo! We will have ourselves a President, a Governor or a Senator! Then we can get back to the Khardashians before the commercial’s over.

That is not, in my view, a technique for either strengthening or preserving a free society.

‘Sanctuary’ NYC Creates Its Own ‘Border Patrol’ Once again, leftist hypocrisy rears its ugly head.

Back on March 18th of this year, I wrote an article, “Because of the Coronavirus, Borders Suddenly Matter” which noted that New York State even establishes internal borders.

The irony is that for decades New York City and other cities have adopted “Sanctuary” policies that, to one extent or another, block federal immigration law enforcement officers from interacting with local and state officials. The level of cooperation between local officials and federal immigration authorities or lack thereof, varies greatly from one jurisdiction to another, but as of late, has all but ended in many such jurisdictions across the United States.

The State of New York even has taken to providing illegal aliens with driver’s licenses while blocking DMV (Department of Motor Vehicle) information from federal immigration agencies including the U.S. Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection inspectors at ports of entry, and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) as I reported in my recent article, “New York State Blocks ICE and Border Patrol Access to DMV Database.”

Governor Cuomo has outrageously taken to calling ICE agents “thugs.”

Meanwhile the 9/11 Commission made it abundantly clear that international terrorists, and not just the 9/11 hijacker-terrorists, exploited key vulnerabilities to enter the United States and embed themselves within the immigration system, hiding in plain sight as they went about their deadly preparations. The very same immigration system that the city most devastated on September 11, 2001 — New York — has acted most aggressively to undermine and subvert.

Now in spite of the supposed abhorrence to secure national borders and effective immigration law enforcement, New York City is at it again — apparently creating its own “Border Patrol” to secure the borders of the city of New York!

On August 5, 2020 the New York Times reported, “Virus ‘Checkpoints’ in N.Y.C. to Enforce Travel Rules?”  Well, not exactly. The mayor is sending the sheriff to city bridges and tunnels to try to ward off a second wave of the coronavirus.

This article began with this paragraph:

The announcement by Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday seemed to signal a new crackdown in the citys efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus: Traveler registration checkpoints” would be set up at bridges and tunnels, conjuring images of police officers stopping cars and detaining people from out of state.

The New York Times report then said that this was more about informing motorists about the need to quarantine if they were coming from states where they were experiencing increases in the virus.

In reviewing the policies, however, de Blasio’s program is far more than an “educational” effort but imposes fines of up to ten thousand dollars and forms of stringent punishment.

De Blasio clearly sees those entering the city as posing a potential threat to public health.

What is unquestionable is that America’s immigration laws are similarly focused on protecting America and Americans from foreign nationals who pose a threat to public health — as well as to public safety, national security and the jobs and wages of Americans.

I focused on this very issue in my article, “Open Borders Are Dangerous To Our (Public) Health” in which I reminded folks that Ellis Island was a quarantine station that was run by Immigration and U.S. Public Health officials.

For all of the globalists’ rancor about how racist our immigration laws are, they should review the relevant section of the Immigration and Nationality Act, specifically 8 U.S. Code § 1182, which enumerates the categories of aliens who are deemed inadmissible because they pose a threat to the safety and well-being of America and Americans.

That section of law makes no mention and no distinction about race, religion or ethnicity whatsoever, but does begin by stating:

(a) Classes of aliens ineligible for visas or admission Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, aliens who are inadmissible under the following paragraphs are ineligible to receive visas and ineligible to be admitted to the United States:

  1. Health-related grounds

(A) In general Any alien

(i) who is determined (in accordance with regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services) to have a communicable disease of public health significance; [1]

(ii) except as provided in subparagraph (C), who seeks admission as an immigrant, or who seeks adjustment of status to the status of an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence, and who has failed to present documentation of having received vaccination against vaccine-preventable diseases, which shall include at least the following diseases: mumps, measles, rubella, polio, tetanus and diphtheria toxoids, pertussis, influenza type B and hepatitis B, and any other vaccinations against vaccine-preventable diseases recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices,

That section of federal law that serves as the framework for the decisions made by CBP (Customs and Border Protection) inspectors at ports of entry also deems that aliens who are criminals, terrorists, spies, human rights violators, human traffickers, drug smugglers and others who pose a threat to national security, public safety and the jobs and wages of Americans are to be inadmissible.

If the mayor and governor are concerned about saving innocent lives, why would they undermine federal laws that were enacted to protect innocent lives?

Yet for years New York’s mayor and governor and their acolytes have done everything their twisted minds could come up with to undermine the enforcement of these vital federal immigration laws.

Once again hypocrisy rules in de Blasio’s words, deeds and policies.

Our nation’s immigration laws make absolutely no distinction or even provide any language that pertains to the issues of race, religion or ethnicity.

Nevertheless, a frequent but utterly bogus claim made by the “leaders” of these sanctuary jurisdictions is that they seek to protect the “immigrants” from “unconstitutional” actions of federal immigration authorities and are concerned about the harm that our immigration laws may have on the civil rights of aliens who are illegally present in the United States.

The oft-claimed concerns voiced by these immigration anarchists, about how enforcing our immigration laws violates the Constitution, completely ignores Article IV, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution, which states:

“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.”

Invasion, incidentally, has been defined, in part, as:

An incursion by a large number of people or things into a place or sphere of activity or an unwelcome intrusion into another’s domain.

Today there are tens millions of aliens who have either evaded the inspections process conducted at ports of entry by CBP (Customs and Border Protection) inspectors or were lawfully admitted into the United States and then subsequently violated their terms of admission.

Certainly, the term invasion is appropriate to describe the huge number of foreign nationals (aliens) who are illegally present in our country, undermining public health, public safety, national security and the jobs and wages of Americans.

It is clear that opponents of immigration law enforcement are actually opposed to the Constitution itself and the protections it provides to America and Americans.

Just as the attacks by the anarchists began with attacks on immigration law enforcement that have now metastasized to include the police and all forms of law enforcement, remember Nancy Pelosi referred to federal agents as “Storm Troopers.” It is clear that the anarchists increasingly are seeking to dismantle all of our Constitutionally-protected freedoms, especially our First and Second Amendment rights, as I noted recently in my piece, “Attacks on Law Enforcement Are Attacks on America.”

If Mayor de Blasio wants to raise money for NYC he could charge admission to anyone willing to enter the city’s limits so that they could experience, up close and in person, a city where the loons are running the asylum! I doubt, however, that too many would be willing to enter, let alone pay to witness the “freak show.”

It is clear that the radical politicians aren’t really concerned about public health or public safety but about consolidating their grip on political power, no matter the subsequent cost in human lives.

VIDEO: Nancy Pelosi Crows, “China would prefer Joe Biden”

The Democrats are so far gone, so full of hatred of America, they are boasting. Imagine running on ‘Hitler’s choice!’

Why does China prefer Joe Biden, Nancy? The treasonous Speaker of the House doesn’t even understand why China preferring Joe Biden is a serious problem. The Dems will gift this country to China if they take power in November.

Nancy Pelosi Crows: “China would prefer Joe Biden” [Video]

By 100 Percent Fed up, August 9, 2020

Nancy Pelosi joined CNN’s Dana Bash this morning to discuss the latest on Joe Biden and President Trump. In a strange clip from the interview, House Speaker Pelosi repeatedly claims that China would “prefer” that Joe Biden is POTUS.

Pelosi seems to be pushing this narrative as a positive for Joe Biden when Biden’s history with China is troubling (see report below).

Did she forget that China unleached coronavirus on the world and didn’t tell anyone?

Also, Biden has a long history of friendship with China…this is not good.

One of President Trump’s campaign ads is all about Biden’s connections to China. There’s so much to unpack here because Biden has a long history involving China (see report below).

The effectiveness of an ad can be judged by how loud the opponent yells.

Joe Biden, Dems & media can’t handle the truth of Sleepy Joe’s record plus Hunter trading on his dad’s name for big cash from the Chinese Communists.

Which presidents were the best for America…and which were the worst?

Most historians of the American presidency—walking in lockstep with today’s hard-Left academic establishment—favor presidents who were big-government statists and globalists. They dislike presidents who lowered taxes, protected American workers, and avoided getting the United States entangled in foreign conflicts that had nothing to do with protecting the American people. It is through that prism that they see all of American history.

It’s time for a change. Nowadays, with socialism massively discredited and internationalism facing more opposition than it has since before World War II, it’s time to reevaluate what the Leftist historians have told us. Donald Trump was elected president pledging to put America First, as any nation’s leader should put his or her own people first. There needs to be an America-First reevaluation of him and his predecessors.

This book, therefore, rates the presidents not on the basis of criteria developed by socialist internationalist historians, but on their fidelity to the United States Constitution and to the powers, and limits to those powers, of the president as delineated by the Founding Fathers. America’s presidents are rated on the extent to which they put America First—not in the sense of a narrow isolationism, but whether they really advanced the interests of the American people.

This upends the conventional wisdom about a great deal of American history and present-day reality, and is intended to do so. This book offers what should be the only criteria for rating the occupants of the White House: were they good for America?

EXCLUSIVE: New York City Rifle Permit Applications Surge by 340%

New York City rifle permit applications and pistol license requests have surged this year, according to New York Police Department (NYPD) data obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

NYC residents submitted nearly 149% more handgun permits and nearly 340% more rifle/shotgun permits from Jan. 1 to June 28 compared to the same period in 2019, according to data provided to the DCNF by NYPD spokeswoman Sgt. Jessica McRorie.

A total of 2,338 people applied for handgun licenses from January to the end of June this year, compared to 1,571 last year in the same time frame, according to the NYPD data. Residents applied for 1,492 rifle permits in the six-month span in 2020 compared to 441 in 2019, the data show.

Handgun licenses were approved at a rate of 46% and rifle and shotgun licenses at a rate of 29% in the six month period in 2020, data show. Last year, 77% of handgun licenses were issued and 61% of long gun permits were approved in the same period, according to a data analysis performed by the DCNF.

The apparent decrease in approvals may not necessarily equal an uptick in denials, as residents can end up waiting up to 8-10 months to receive their permits. Thus, many of the currently unapproved applications may have yet to be either approved or denied.

The five boroughs have some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation and are one of three regions in the U.S. to mandate citizens have permits before they can purchase either handguns or rifles, according to the Giffords Law Center.

Residents must apply for the permit that covers the specific class of weapon they’d like to acquire and cannot purchase a gun legally without one, according to New York City Guns, a local firearm-advocacy organization.

A New York City rifle and shotgun permit application is 13-pages long and costs $231 to submit with all relevant materials. Applicants must show four color photographs of themselves, a utility bill or lease, a birth certificate and two character reference letters in addition to being fingerprinted.

If approved, the applicant is granted a license but must then register all of their firearm purchases with the city. License holders are also required to comply with NYC’s assault weapons ban that forbids the ownership of any firearm with a folding stock, pistol grip or threaded barrel, among other common features.

Any component that police deem to be akin to military features can also be banned at their discretion, according to the application.

NYC also has outlawed pistol magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and rifle or shotgun magazines that hold more than five rounds, according to New York City Guns.

The city has experienced a wave of violence since the death of George Floyd, who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for over eight minutes, video showed.

NYC has experienced a 64% increase in shootings in May, a 130% increase in gun incidents in June and a 177% uptick in shootings in July, according to NYPD crime statistics.

Murder in the Boroughs is also on the rise with 79% increase in May killings, 30% rise in June murders and a 59% increase in July killings, NYPD crime comparisons to 2019 showed.

‘Do I Seem Rattled?’: Trump Calmly Describes Shooting Near White House

A few minutes into a press briefing Monday evening, President Donald Trump calmly walked away from the lectern after a Secret Service agent interrupted him and whispered a few words.

News outlets later reported the agent’s words: “We hear shots fired outside.”

“Excuse me,” Trump said to reporters, and departed the White House briefing room without giving a reason.

Confusion ensued for about 10 minutes until, shortly after initial reports of a nearby shooting, Trump returned to the press room as calmly as he had abruptly left.

“Sorry for that. There was a shooting outside of the White House, and it seems to be very well under control,” Trump told reporters. “I’d like to thank the Secret Service for doing their always quick and very effective work.”

“There was an actual shooting,” the president said. “Someone has been taken to the hospital. I don’t know the condition of the person. It seems the person was shot by Secret Service.”

Shortly before 8 p.m., the Secret Service announced on Twitter that an unidentified man and a Secret Service officer had been taken to a Washington hospital.

“At no time during this incident was the White House complex breached or were any protectees in danger,” the tweet said.

The shooting occurred at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, according to the agency.

As reporters’ questions flew earlier, Trump stressed that he didn’t have any details.

“It seems the shooting was done by law enforcement,” the president said. “It was the suspect who was shot.”

One reporter asked:  “Are you rattled by this at all, Mr. President?”

Trump quickly responded: “I don’t know, do I seem rattled? It’s unfortunate. But the world has always been a dangerous place.”

He referred to Fox News Channel’s White House correspondent, John Roberts, who had been outside and reported hearing two shots.

Roberts spoke up in the briefing, at Trump’s request, to say that the two shots were fired in close succession.

Roberts later reported that the incident occurred about 5:48 p.m. at the southeast corner of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, on the far side of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House. He said he “heard two very loud pops in rapid succession.”

News footage showed uniformed officers appearing to administer aid to someone on the pavement.

When a reporter asked whether the Secret Service had taken him to a  White House bunker, Trump said he had gone back to the Oval Office.

“He said, ‘Sir, could you please come with me?’” the president said, recalling the agent’s words.

“You were surprised. I was surprised also,” he told reporters. “I think it’s probably pretty unusual, but [the Secret Service agents are] very, very professional people. They do a fantastic job, as you know.”

He said he was told that no law enforcement officers had been injured, and that the person who was shot had been armed.

“I feel very safe with the Secret Service. They are the best of the best,” Trump added.

Asked why he came back to continue the briefing, Trump said: “I didn’t even think about not coming back.”

His Secret Service detail told him he had to wait a little while, the president said.

At one point, Trump described the shooter as “pretty close” to the White House. In response to a later question, he said, “I don’t believe anything was breached” and added that the person in question was “relatively far away.”

Ken McIntyre contributed to this report.

For years, “Democratic Socialists” have been growing a crop of followers that include students and young professionals. America’s future will be in their hands.

White House Weighs Bill in Response to Big Tech on Free Speech

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows says the Trump administration is contemplating some type of regulation for social media companies as part of the COVID-19 relief legislation being negotiated with Congress.

“As much as I’m a guy that says that the social media companies should be able to have their own—what I would call a wild, wild West way of doing things … I’m over it,” Meadows said Friday in a livestream interview with American Conservative Union Chairman Matt Schlapp.

“This censorship has gotten to the point where if they are going to censor, then I’m going to make sure they are regulated,” Meadows said, reflecting President Donald Trump’s thinking.

During the week, Twitter removed a post by Trump that correctly stated children are less likely to get COVID-19 than adults. In May, Twitter issued a questionable “fact check” on one of Trump’s tweets on problems with mail-in voting.

In addition to Trump, there have been other cases of technology companies’ censorship of conservatives, including YouTube’s blocking of The Heritage Foundation and Prager University.

Trump issued an executive order in April that lifted some of the protection the social media platforms enjoyed under the Communications Decency Act. However, an executive order lacks the power of legislation.

Meadows, who represented North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District from 2013 until becoming Trump’s chief of staff last March, wasn’t clear on the specifics of what any proposed legislation might involve.

“The president has, as you know, put forth a few executive orders, but even in this package—we’ll make news here—we’re looking at, ‘What do we do with regard to some of the protections that social media companies have?’” he said.

Social media platforms have not faced regulations as broadcast media have. Nor could they be held liable for information on their platforms as print or online media could, because they aren’t publishers per se.

However, the platforms have come under scrutiny for picking and choosing content, while not facing accountability.

“We ought to address that in this package we have right now—in the emergency package,” Meadows said. “We’re talking about freedom of the press, freedom of expression. And yet what we have are a number of companies that have decided on what should be communicated and what should not be communicated. And it is very troubling.”

The chief of staff continued:

We’ve seen videos taken down. We’ve seen posts taken down. Ultimately, if you’re allowing the social media companies to be the determiner of free speech, you’re in a very dangerous place.

I spoke to the president last night about actually addressing that in this particular package.

Meadows later added:

It’s perfectly fine for every employee of those social media companies to advocate personally for their candidate of choice, whether it’s the far left or the far right, or someone in between. That’s America.

It’s totally inappropriate for those same people who work at a company to allow the company to put, really, the market cap and the power of these big social media companies on that level, on that scale of justice, to say we are going to determine what you see and what you view, and what is right and what is wrong. It’s inappropriate.

The CEOs of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google testified July 29 before the House Judiciary Committee’s antitrust, commercial, and administrative law subcommittee, and denied any political bias.

Still, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, noted during the hearing that Google temporarily removed the home pages of Breitbart and The Daily Caller and threatened to demonetize The Federalist. All three are conservative media outlets.

Heritage Foundation President Kay C. James weighed in on the hearing.

Jordan, who succeeded Meadows as the committee’s ranking Republican, said the Amazon Smile program won’t allow Amazon customers to give charitable donations to some conservative groups, such as Family Research Council or Alliance Defending Freedom, but allows charitable donations to Planned Parenthood.

Will President Biden Give Pro-Constitution Americans Any Assurances?

My latest at PJ Media:

If Joe Biden is sworn in as president on January 20, 2021, and all the polls are telling us he absolutely has it in the bag, he will swear on that day to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States,” so help him, you know, the thing. But no matter what mandate the Democratic Party propaganda machine known as the American media, and the farce known as mail-in voting, can give the affable grifter, roughly half the country will still be absolutely unwilling to go down the path of managed decline, internationalism, and socialism that a Biden administration promises to give us.

Can Biden offer the Americans who really do want to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution any assurances?

Take, for example, the Second Amendment, Americans’ final safeguard against tyranny. Will Biden pledge not to appoint Beto O’Rourke, who vowed, “Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” to any position in which he actually would be able to disarm Americans and leave them defenseless in an age of ever-escalating antifa and Black Lives Matter violence?

Also in regard to security, Biden has vowed, on his first day in office, to remove what he calls Trump’s “Muslim ban,” which in reality is a travel ban on thirteen countries, eight of which are Muslim, that cannot or will not provide accurate information about prospective immigrants. Biden excoriated this travel ban as “vile” and characterized it as “Donald Trump’s assault on black and brown communities in this country.”

If he does indeed become president and scraps this travel ban on his first day in office, what safeguards will he put into place to ensure that jihad terrorists and others who wish to harm Americans (“black and brown” ones as well as those of other hues) will not take advantage of his hospitality? Migrants, including the Boston Marathon bombers and the San Bernardino shooters, murdered and maimed Americans during the Obama administration. What will Biden do to reassure Americans that this sort of thing won’t happen again?

There is much more. Read the rest here.

The Politics of Heaven and Hell

Robert Royal: Heaven is in Heaven and the New Jerusalem cannot be brought to Earth by our efforts; only God will bring perfect justice at the Second Coming.

Shortly after I arrived in Washington years ago, I reviewed a book with the same title as this column. A friend warned about reviewing books by that particular author – our late lamented colleague James V. Schall, S.J. – because if you start, he said, you won’t have time for anything else. And that was before the supernova of titles that Schall the Great turned out in his seventies, eighties, and even nineties.

Ignatius Press is republishing The Politics of Heaven and Hell this fall with an introduction by another incisive and prolific writer, Robert Reilly. A good thing, too, because in our current chaos, when it seems almost impossible to get sure footing about anything, this relatively neglected volume not only uncovers sure foundations. It explains the ways by which we’ve mixed up eternal and temporal things – and put the times out of joint.

Schall’s central insight is that our central traditions of both faith and reason agree that politics is an important, but circumscribed realm. If we were the highest beings, politics would be the highest science, said Aristotle. That wise pagan – Dante calls him “the master of those who know” – knew that we are not the highest beings. There’s God, for starters, and His Creation, to which we owe deference. Ignore them, and the inevitable result is chaos, suffering, servitude, tyranny, and death.

The ancient Hebrews learned this well before Aristotle. Schall notes how little attention political theorists pay to the Old Testament, the history of a small and obscure nation – Israel – that survived, improbably, down to our own time, with incalculable influence on the history of the whole world. It did so not because of any special policies or virtues: Jewish history is a record of graces given and refused, of return and consequent flourishing, of many rounds of ignoring God, decline, and renewal through Him.

The overall lesson: nations are great not because they accumulate power or wealth. Power and wealth come and go. And aren’t all they seem anyway. Nations are made great, however insignificant they may be in earthly terms, because God makes them so and they conform themselves to God.

Christianity, of course, limited politics in a special way, beginning with Jesus’ famous distinction between the things that are Caesar’s – the arrangements necessary to human flourishing (even, sadly, taxes) – and the things that are God’s. Those few words had immense, cascading effects in the Christian tradition.

And not only in thinkers like Augustine, Aquinas, Suárez, Bellarmine, etc. Countries historically touched by Christianity still mostly protect beliefs about ultimate things from control by politics – indeed, believe that right can and should challenge might. That separation is absent from Muslim societies, ideological regimes like China, or traditional societies where the ruler is regarded as a kind of mortal god.

But it’s not only on high intellectual or social planes that these truths prove themselves. As we’ve seen only too clearly in modern times, when politics becomes the “highest science” men become not philosopher kings, but beasts. The totalizing political systems of Communism, Nazism, and Fascism were killing machines on an unprecedented scale.

And recent decades have given birth to what the Polish philosopher Ryszard Legutko calls the “demon in democracy,” a new totalitarian temptation wherein everything is defined by political ideology. We worry over “polarization,” but there’s a deep geological fault in our politics, far more radical than that. The absence of religion in the public square, with its moderating effects, is a large factor in this development, since once the true God departs the false god of the state arrives.

Even good public impulses then become poisonous – and unlimited. For example, we’ve just seen what can happen when a proper effort to right racism, a historic wrong, is made the measure of everything. Everything becomes “racist” that is not explicitly “anti-racist” – according to someone’s definition, which may differ from someone else’s. Not surprisingly, demands for absolute political justice then turn into “canceling” and anathematizing people who show the slightest deviation from an ideological line – i.e., injustice.

Historic racial inequities need to be fixed, but does injustice only involve race – with occasional bows to gender and class? Andrew Sullivan, a brilliant writer, recently resigned from New York magazine because it couldn’t bear his criticism of “cancel culture,” despite his being gay and liberal on some issues, conservative on others (and somehow also aspiring to be Catholic).

He pointed out that it’s places like the New York Times that really don’t understand a just “diversity.” The Times seems poised to cave in to employee demands that staff reflect the racial makeup of New York City: 24 percent black and more than half “people of color.” And there must be “sensitivity training” – i.e., ideological indoctrination – for everyone.

Sullivan notes that there are other underrepresented groups at the Times. Only 37 percent of New Yorkers, for example, are college graduates – who are overrepresented in the newsroom – as are Asians and Jews. Should some of them resign?  If you wanted fairer proportions of New Yorkers, 10 percent of staff would have to be Republicans, 6 percent Hasidic Jews, and 33 percent Catholic.

It may be a long wait for that because ideologues only care about certain “facts” and rarely have a sense of irony – or humor.

Which takes us back to the politics of Heaven and Hell. Heaven is in Heaven and the New Jerusalem cannot be brought to Earth by our efforts; only God will bring perfect justice at the Second Coming. The road to human hells, however, always lies wide open.

The larger perspective that religion affords us – including elements like human imperfection, sin, forgiveness, tolerance, the limits of earthly politics – does not mean that we need to be any less passionate in pursuing justice and fairness. But it does mean we have to be vigilant and measured about our own motives and the results of our actions. We have on good authority: “Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.” (Lk. 11:3)
