Edith Stein: Jewish philosopher, Carmelite nun, murdered at Auschwitz — A Witness to Truth at 75

Every generation thinks it’s living in unusual times. Ours really is. We are witnessing the passing of our civilization and – like someone having brain surgery while wide-awake – are conscious of what’s happening. Or at least a few of us are. We’re suffering – among other things – massive amnesia. Juvenile rebellion, too, by people of all ages, against what’s taken to be “our civilization.” But the greater problem, by far, is that for most people our basic traditions have just dropped below the horizon. They don’t see that anything else than what they’re familiar with ever existed. And we have fewer and fewer witnesses to the truth.

Today is the 75th anniversary of the death of a woman whom St. John Paul II called “a martyr to truth,” Edith Stein, a brilliant philosopher, a Jewish convert to Catholicism, who got caught up in the Nazi persecutions of Jews and the Church, and died at Auschwitz.

It’s just one reflection of the malice of those days that she and her sister Rosa were picked up by the Gestapo at their Carmelite convent in Holland, where they’d fled for safety, because the Dutch bishops had twelve days earlier issued a pastoral letter denouncing Nazi “racism.” In retaliation, Nazi authorities arrested Jewish converts to Catholicism and shipped them to the gas chambers.

I first got interested in Stein when I wrote The Catholic Martyrs of the Twentieth Century. She was canonized in 1998; controversy erupted over whether she should even be called a martyr since she was killed not in odium fidei, some argued, but because she was Jewish. It also seemed to some critics that JPII was trying to appropriate the Holocaust partly for Catholics.

In Poland, where the Nazis killed several million non-Jews, this is still a sore controversy. But the official Vatican explanation – one typical of what JPII called the “new martyrs” – was that several factors intermingled to make “martyr” the right term for Edith.

Besides the Dutch bishops’ statement of Catholic teaching about “race,” there were at least three features of Stein’s life that could be read as a willingness to accept martyrdom . . .

Iran’s Top Export to Latin America: Radical Islam

Emanuele Ottolenghi and Michaele Fria of the Washington, D.C. based Foundation for Defense of Democracies have thrown a spotlight on Iran’s long program of spreading its anti-Semitic brand of extremist Shia Islam across Latin America establishing cultural and proselytizing centers particularly with vulnerable indigenous populations.

This is a long term program begun early following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. We saw that effort highlighted a decade ago with the several visits made to Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil by former Iranian President Ahmadinejad pursing what he called the Islamic republic’s ‘double lasso” foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere. That included inauguration of air routes directly from Tehran to several capitals in Latin America.

We can see elements of Iran’s nefarious policies and cultivation in the current crisis in Venezuela begun under the Chavismo regime founder the late Hugo Chavez and his successor embattled President Nicolas Maduro. Among the 13 US sanctioned officials for human rights abuses and drug smuggling is Vice President Tarek El Aissami of Lebanese Druze origins with deep connections to Iran proxy Hezbollah. Another Venezuelan of Lebanese origins is Tarek Saab, the newly appointed Attorney General who replaced dissident Louisa Ortega at the order of the Maduro regime’s puppet Constituent Assembly. He was denied visas to enter the Us because of connection to international terrorist networks.

Then there is the painful memory of the 1992 Israel Embassy and 1994 AMIA Jewish Center bombings in Buenos Aires that killed over 123 Israeli and Argentinian Jews and non-Jews, injuring more than several hundred. Those were planned and executed by Hezbollah terrorist mastermind, the late Imad Mughniyah. As pointed out by Ottollenghi Mohsen Rabbani , who established a so-called cultural center was the other mastermind of the AMIA bombing. Argentine Prosecutor Alberto Nisman, many believe was murdered in January 2015 on orders of Tehran, just as he was about to file his dossier of Argentinean and Iranian involvement in the AMIA bombing.

Ayatollah Mohsen Araki, who openly calls for the “annihilation of Zionism” and has promoted friendly relations with the Taliban, arrived in São Paulo, Brazil and discussed how Muslims can fight “radical terrorism”. Araki holds a senior position within Iran’s clerical regime; his pretense of being an opponent of extremism perfectly captures how Iran has sought to depict itself as an ally of the West in its battle against the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda. In fact, the opposite is true. Araki’s visit is yet another demonstration of how the Iranian regime is busy exporting its own brand of radical Islam, in order to radicalize Shi’a expatriate communities while spreading Tehran’s influence in the region.
The hosts for Araki’s lecture in Brazil on July 29th were none other than local Hezbollah-linked religious centers that promote Iran’s Islamic revolution.

Guests from across the continent included Latin American and Iranian clerics who are disciples of Mohsen Rabbani, Iran’s former cultural attaché in Latin America and the mastermind of Argentina’s 1994 AMIA terrorist attack that left 85 dead at a Jewish center.

Since the 1980s, Tehran has worked diligently to create the infrastructure for both overt and covert operations in the Western Hemisphere. Araki’s visit is part of a well-orchestrated plan to indoctrinate and radicalize existing Shi’a communities while seeking new acolytes among local sympathizers of Iran’s political agenda.

Brazil is not the only target of Iran’s efforts. Across the region, Iranian preachers and their local enablers have presented themselves as advocates of human rights and social justice to gain footholds among disenfranchised and marginalized communities in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico, and Peru. Relying on allies such as Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, Iran has established forward operating bases for the spread of their propaganda.

A case in point is Edwar Quiroga Vargas, a Peruvian indigenous rights activist who has adopted Iran’s incendiary rhetoric upon converting to Shi’a Islam. Through introductions made by an Iranian diplomat, Quiroga discovered Shi’a Islam at a 2009 conference in Bolivia sponsored by the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas (ALBA), a trade bloc founded by Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez in which Iran participates as an observer state. Soon after, Quiroga travelled to Iran for three months, where he studied under Rabbani. Upon returning to Peru, Quiroga established Inkarri-Islam, the country’s first Shi’a Islamic cultural center.

Inkarri-Islam perfectly encapsulates the Iranian strategy of blending traditional indigenous teachings with revolutionary Shi’a Islam by capitalizing on loose parallels in historical narratives. By juxtaposing similar narratives like Shi’a Muslim’s belief in the return of the Mahdi with indigenous myths such as the return of the Inca, Quiroga built his cultural center a façade of legitimacy while pursuing a radical agenda on Iran’s behalf. As seen in its mission statement, Inkarri-Islam calls for the liberation of the Incas from “Zionist colonization” and hopes that the “cleansing and extinction of the Zionist state” will propitiate the rise of their political redeemer.

Antisemitism is never far from hatred for Israel. True to form, Quiroga has publicly accused “300 Jewish Zionist bankers” of holding the economy of 31 million Peruvians hostage. He is on record accusing Israeli Mossad agents of having carried out the AMIA bombing. And he has declared his readiness to serve as “a soldier of Islam” on behalf of Iran’s revolution, a pledge he may seek to fulfill through the political party he recently established in Peru, which he called Partido de Dios – or Hezbollah in Spanish.

Quiroga is not an isolated phenomenon, and not only because since 2011, he has opened five more cultural centers across Peru and overseen nearly twenty-five students who have traveled to Iran to attend Rabbani’s religious programs in Qom. Iranian cultural centers and their Iranian-trained local converts promote a similar radical agenda across Latin America and, indeed, globally. The Iranian backed center in Santiago de Chile, for example, offers a Spanish translation of writings by French Holocaust denier Roger Garaudy and many centers across the continent routinely promote conspiracy theories through social media and glorify the terror organization Hezbollah. Meanwhile, Iranian-backed Spanish-language media such as HispanTV spread revolutionary and anti-imperialist themes.

Ultimately, Iran threatens the national security of the U.S. and its allies with its spread of anti-Zionist hatred and Islamic revolutionary rhetoric to the Western Hemisphere. The networks established by Iran do not just promote hate speech; they are intimately involved in criminal enterprises such as narco-trafficking to generate tens of millions of dollars to fund Hezbollah and other Iranian clients.

Despite strong religious intolerance and hate speech laws, the Brazilian government allowed Araki’s visit, stirring outrage in the country’s religious communities. This trip should be the last of its kind for any Iranian clerics promoting radicalization and hatred. Latin American governments should take stock of Iranian-backed radical activities such as his lecture tour and work closely with local governments and organizations to prevent the spread of Iranian-backed extremism in Latin America, especially under the conceit of moderation.

Starbucks interviewing refugees in California for jobs as baristas

They say they ultimately want to hire 10,000 refugees because no American young people need jobs! (No they didn’t say that, but they must be thinking it!).

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV)–Store managers from throughout San Diego will gather tomorrow at a Starbucks hiring event for refugees who want to train to be baristas.

The U.S. company announced in January it would hire 10,000 refugees over the next five years. The announcement by CEO Howard Schultz came two days after President Donald Trump issued his first executive order putting a four-month hold on allowing refugees into the U.S.

The world’s largest coffee chain said it would focus initial efforts on markets where refugee need is greatest and there’s a store base to meet the need.

According to state and federal data, San Diego fits the bill.

No other California county has received more refugees during the past decade than San Diego county.

In 2016, San Diego settled 3,100 refugees, along with 520 military interpreters on special immigrant visas.

About 30 Starbucks managers will conduct on-the-spot interviews at the International Rescue Committee***‘s office located at 131 E. Main Street in El Cajon from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8. Applicants are encouraged to visit Starbucks online career center prior to the event and bring resumes along with them.

Sheesh, the plot thickens…

At Forbes yesterday (Starbuck’s bad dream).  The story is about a bogus ad campaign (kinda funny, but fake).  But, I learned this:

Say what you will about Howard Schultz, and there’s plenty to say. Mr. Schultz, who served as Starbucks CEO until earlier this year, ran the company like a kid in a candy store, opening all the jars and boxes to taste the goodies inside before moving on. He bought a chain of tea shops, Teavana, then shut them down. He bought a chain of bakeries, La Boulange, then shut them down. He weathered the scorn of critics who called the coffee over-roasted and who derided his plan to hire refugees overseas. [San Diego is not overseas!—ed]

It doesn’t hurt to remember that Mr. Schultz is often mentioned as a contender for the democratic presidential nomination in 2020, so there’s a possibility that the latest news is part of an early whisper-campaign to tarnish his image.

Today’s news doesn’t actually involve Mr. Schultz by name but by his commitment to hire 100,000 new employees over the next decade. In the United States, they would be veterans and members of traditionally disadvantaged communities. At the stores outside the US (and Starbucks does business in 27 countries) Starbucks announced that many of the new hires would be refugees.

[Really! Then why are they hiring refugees in California? What about Big Meat and Big Chicken? Won’t Starbucks be competing with them in Cali?—ed]

*** For new readers, the International Rescue Committee is one of the Federal contractors/middlemen/employment agencies/propagandists/lobbyists/community organizers? paid by you to place refugees in your towns and cities listed below.  Under the nine major contractors are hundreds of subcontractors.

The contractors income is largely dependent on taxpayer dollars based on the number of refugees admitted to the US, but they also receive myriad grants to service their “New Americans.”

If you are a good-hearted soul and think refugee resettlement is all about humanitarianism, think again! Big businesses/global corporations like Starbucks depend on the free flow of cheap (some call it slave) labor.

The only way for real reform of how the US admits refugees is to remove these contractors/Leftwing activists/big business head hunters from the process.

Google Lobbyists Fighting Anti-Human Trafficking Legislation

Google lobbyists are blitzing members of the U.S. Congress to stop their efforts to combat online sex trafficking by amending section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) in the respective bills S. 1693 and H.R. 1865.

As currently interpreted by U.S. federal courts, Section 230 of the CDA grants broad immunity to Internet platforms for third-party posts, even to websites that intentionally facilitate sex trafficking online such as Backpage.com.

Research by Consumer Watchdog reveals that Google has provided millions of dollars to support Backpage’s legal defense. Much of that legal defense hinges on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA).

Moreover, a Harvard professor uncovered that in 2011 that Google earned over a billion dollars in revenue from unlawful advertising they had failed to block which included child sex trafficking.

Tech lobbyists are claiming that this law is an attack on free speech, but this is only an attack on criminal acts (read more myths vs facts about this legislation here.)

Google has an army of lobbyists and a trove of financial resources, so if you are fighting to defend women, children, and men from trafficking or prostitution or sexual violence then your voice is needed in this effort!

Ways you can take action:

  1.  Email your elected officials and ask them to support efforts to amend section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
  2.  Sign the petition to ask Google to stop defending websites that facilitate sex trafficking.
  3. Spread the word! Talk to your friends about this problem, ask any journalists you know to cover this story, and share the below graphics on social media.

A senior software engineer at the company claimed in a document that was distributed to colleagues that right-wing employees were forced to keep their views ‘in the closet’ to avoid hostility….

The engineer claims Google’s ‘left bias’ has created ‘a politically correct monoculture that maintains its hold by shaming dissenters into silence’.

He adds: ‘This silencing has created an ideological echo chamber where some ideas are too sacred to be honestly discussed.’…

The anti-diversity manifesto claimed that Google should focus on ‘ideological diversity’….

In a section of the document titled ‘Stop Alienating Conservatives,’ he argues for the importance of ‘viewpoint diversity.’

‘In highly progressive environments, conservatives are a minority that feel like they need to stay in the closet to avoid open hostility,’ he claims.

‘We should empower those with different ideologies to be able to express themselves.

‘Alienating conservatives is both non-inclusive and generally bad business because conservatives tend to be higher in conscientiousness, which is require for much of the drudgery and maintenance work characteristic of a mature company.’

The author was being lambasted on social media….

Remember Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) sought to REDUCE security screening for Syrians in 2015

Editor: This is a repost of a repost!  Since President Trump was ‘highlighting’ the storied career of Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal yesterday (so that Blumenthal today is all over the Leftwing cable news), I thought new readers might like to know more about the man.

Come to think of it, I haven’t heard Blumenthal lately asking for more Syrian refugees for Connecticut.

Here is my post from earlier this year, which is a repost itself from 2015:

Because he is all over the news today as the focal point in one more attack on President Donald Trump, I’m re-posting this story from 2015 so you know just who Senator Blumenthal is and why he must be pretty unhappy with Trump.

In 2015 Senator Blumenthal held a press conference with the director of CAIR Connecticut seeking to speed up Syrian refugees to America by reducing security screening requirements. 98% of Syrians entering the U.S. are Muslims.

This is what I said October 7, 2015:

Update: Who was that man over Senator Blumenthal’s left shoulder? That is CAIR-Connecticut’s Executive Director behind Senator Blumenthal. Getting pretty brazen aren’t they, or is Blumenthal just pretty dense to invite CAIR to be so prominently involved in lessening security screening for refugees?

Yesterday we told you that Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) is leading the charge to lessen the security screening for Syrian and other Middle Eastern refugees and he wants to expand the so-called P-3 (fraud ridden!) family reunification program.

Now we know the answer to the question I asked all of you to help answer.  Looming over Blumenthal’s shoulder is none other than Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR)- Connecticut director Mongi Dhaouadi [pictured right].

(When I mentioned to a friend that I had updated my post with that information (thanks to Kyle), she suggested I write a second post because as a subscriber, who received the earlier one, she would not see the update.)

But it is worth mentioning again because this is now the second time we have seen CAIR involving itself directly in the Syrian (mostly Muslim) resettlement issue (and you can bet they are not advocating for the persecuted Syrian Christians).

Clearly their interest is in boosting the Muslim population in the US.

CAIR was here in the St. Louis ‘Bring them here march’ last month.

So far Connecticut doesn’t get very many refugees compared to other states.  I guess Blumenthal and Dhaouadi would like to change that.

Former Vice President Al Gore’s new film, An Inconvenient Sequel, came in a dismal 15th this weekend at U.S. theaters, according to Box Office Mojo.

Gore’s defenders have been quick to blame Paramount Pictures for the dismal performance of Gore’s sequel. “Al Gore Gets Ripped Off Again,” screamed the headline of D.R. Tucker in Washington Monthly.View post

“This was not supposed to happen,” Tucker wrote, adding, “he should have demanded a recount.”

“Sadly, the box-office under-performance of An Inconvenient Sequel will be seized upon by climate-change deniers as ‘proof’ that Americans don’t really care about this issue,” Tucker wrote.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Gore’s sequel “grossed $900K, averaging $5,000 (per screen). That brought its cume (cumulative) over seven figures, landing at $1,052,000. Its weekend gross placed it 15th in the overall box office as of Sunday morning. Paramount said it will expand the title to over 500 locations next weekend.

The box office performance will disappoint Gore, who had urged his followers to pack movie theaters to send a message to “Trump and the other climate deniers.” 

“By filling theaters, we can show Donald Trump and the other climate deniers in the White House that the American people are committed to climate action –– no matter what they do, say, or tweet!” Gore wrote in an email alert sent to his supporters on Friday August 4th, the day of his nationwide opening.

A prominent Ivy League Geologist who voted for Gore, was “appalled” after viewing his first 2006 film. “I voted for Gore in 2000, yeah. I think that if he ran again, depending on who he ran against, I might vote for him. He’s a smart man,” said Geologist Dr. Robert Giegengack, who chaired the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania in the skeptical film “Climate Hustle.” 

But after viewing Gore’s film, Giegengack had this reaction. “I was appalled. I was appalled because he either deliberately misrepresented the point he was making or didn’t understand it. So it was irresponsible of Al Gore.”

“CO2 is not the villain that it has been portrayed. I’m impressed by the fact that the present climate, from the perspective of a geologist, is very close to the coldest it’s ever been. The concentration CO2 in the atmosphere today is the close to the lowest it has ever been,” Giegengack explained in “Climate Hustle”.

Gore fans like Tucker are now reduced to blaming the distributor for the sequels disappointing box office.

“A botched strategy by Paramount Pictures effectively sabotaged the nationwide release of the Al Gore documentary An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, which finished in 15th place in US theatres this weekend. This was not supposed to happen,” Tucker explained.

Many climate activists and Gore apostles were hoping for a re-run of the success of Gore’s 2006 original film or of a Michael Moore style boom at the box office.

Tucker wrote: “Considering the fact that this is arguably the first major anti-Trump documentary to hit theatres–and considering the public outrage over Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement–Paramount should have stuck to its original plan; in fact, Paramount could have seized upon anti-Trump sentiment by giving An Inconvenient Sequel the same high-profile national rollout that Lionsgate gave [Michael Moore’s] Fahrenheit 9/11 in 2004, a rollout that resulted in that iconic film opening at #1 at the US box office, a rarity for a documentary.”

“It’s a shame that Paramount dropped the ball, giving the film a ‘national’ release in so few theatres that most Americans must wait until the film is available on demand or on DVD in order to see it,” Tucker explained.

U.S. T-shirt company sells Nazi swastika design as ‘symbol of love and peace’

“The company even made a promotional video claiming that the Nazis ‘took the swastika, rotated it 45 degrees, and turned it into a symbol of hatred, fear, war, racism, power.’…On some of the tee shirts sold by KA Designs, the swastika remains turned by 45 degrees, similarly to the Nazis’ use of the symbol.”

Get the picture?

Given the Left’s fanatical hatred of Israel and wholesale acceptance of “Palestinian” jihad propaganda, this is unlikely to have been an accident.

The US-based clothing design website Teespring is selling T-shirts and sweatshirts branded with swastikas, aiming to make them a “symbol of love and peace”.

The designs, created by KA Designs and sold on the site, all display large swastikas in the front. One shows the Nazi-associated symbol in rainbow colors with the word “Peace”, another one with the word “Zen”, one reading “Love” and a third design, in black, shows a spiral of swastikas. They range in price from $20 to $35.

“Here at KA we explore boundaries. We push them forward.” the company wrote as a description for the products. “Let’s make the swastika a symbol of Love and Peace. Together, we can succeed.”

Before being used by Hitler’s German Nazi regime, swastikas were commonly known as an ancient sign used by Hindus and Buddhists carrying positive associations such as auspiciousness and good fortune. KA Designs is attempting to relate the now negative sign to its origins.

The company even made a promotional video claiming that the Nazis “took the swastika, rotated it 45 degrees, and turned it into a symbol of hatred, fear, war, racism, power.”

“They stigmatized the swastika, they won, they limited our freedom, or maybe not?” the video continues. “The swastika is coming back.”

On some of the tee shirts sold by KA Designs, the swastika remains turned by 45 degrees, similarly to the Nazis’ use of the symbol….

In a recent interview, Bill Nye “The Science Guy” predicted climate science will advance once so-called “climate deniers” die out.

Nye may be convinced younger generations will grow up sold on alarmist lies, but the remarkable student leaders I met at CFACT’s 14th annual Eco-Summit last week beg to differ!

These collegiates from all across the country just finished attending CFACT’s “eco-summit” leadership conference in Baltimore, Maryland, and are now getting ready to return to their campuses fully equipped to battle radical Greens and climate alarmists.

“This was one of the most informative and engaging conferences I’ve ever been to,” said Marcus Swentkofske, a senior at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. “The global warming narrative is all about government control. It reminds me of The Road to Serfdom by Hayek.”

Hailing from California, Washington State, Nevada, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey, these young leaders are certain to have an incredible impact on their peers when they return to their campuses this fall.

The speakers they heard from at the Eco-Summit were impressive, and certainly gave them much ammunition.

Marc Morano addressed the long history of climate change hysteria, while CFACT policy expert Paul Driessen spoke about the harmful effects Green policies have on the developing world.

Property rights advocate Martha Boneta and leading scientist Dr. Kelvin Kemm from South Africa spoke respectively about protecting farmers and the benefits of the free market in animal conservation.

CFACT president David Rothbard also presented our organization’s vision to the students, notably highlighting the Committee’s “Adopt a Village” work in the developing world.

“I loved hearing about the mission of CFACT and how fighting climate alarmism fits into the goal of uplifting the poor,” said Maya Maley of Azusa Pacific University in California. “This is a message I can take back to my campus where many students care about helping the least fortunate around the world.”

The summit wasn’t all hard work though. Students attended a Baltimore Orioles game and went to dinner on the beautiful Inner Harbor in downtown Baltimore, giving them the opportunity to network and grow friendships that will last beyond the conference.

Christian Spears, a sophomore at Seattle University, was fired up to bring what he learned back to campus. “We’ve planned out our club agenda for the coming year and are really excited to work more with CFACT, especially after the summit!”

I was impressed by the questions, enthusiasm, and genuine interest that our student leaders exhibited at the Eco-Summit. These collegians are brave, sometimes risking their reputations and grades on “politically correct” campuses to publicly fight for the truth.

I know you will join me in applauding their tenacity and expectantly waiting to see what they can achieve on campus this coming academic year.

The Castro Control of Venezuela

Throughout the current crisis, we have referenced the behind the scenes role of the Castro regime in Cuba calling the shots in Maduro’s Chavismo autocracy. Mary Anastasia O’Grady in her Americas Wall Street Journal column has maintained a watching brief on the nefarious objectives and activities in several Latin America countries have accomplished to cause the death spiral of democracy. The latest example is the current crisis in Venezuela. She suggests that the former Obama Administration had winked at these destabilizing efforts by the corrupt Castro Communist oligarchy in Havana. She argues persuasively that in addition to sanctions against the Maduro regime the Trump Administration consider applying them to the Castro family in Havana.

Note how she leveraged off of the alleged rebellion in Valencia, Venezuela this weekend, “crushed” by the Maduro controlled National Guard to expose Cuba’s complicity and track record to date with more on the way in today’s column, “The Guns of Venezuela.”

In a video posted on the internet Sunday morning, former Venezuelan National Guard captain Juan Caguaripano, along with some 20 others, announced an uprising against the government of Nicolás Maduro to restore constitutional order. The rebels reportedly appropriated some 120 rifles, ammunition and grenades from the armory at Fort Paramacay in Valencia, the capital of Carabobo state. There were unconfirmed claims of similar raids at several other military installations including in Tachirá.

The Cuba-controlled military regime put tanks in the streets and unleashed a hunt for the fleeing soldiers. It claims it put down the rebellion and it instructed all television to broadcast only news of calm. But Venezuelans were stirred by the rebels’ message. There were reports of civilians gathering in the streets to sing the national anthem in support of the uprising.

Note to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson: Venezuelans want to throw off the yoke of Cuban repression. They need your help.

Unfortunately Mr. Tillerson so far seems to be taking the bad advice of his State Department “experts.”

The same bureaucrats, it should be noted, ran Barack Obama’s Latin America policy. Those years gave us a rapprochement with Havana that culminated with the 44th president doing “the wave” with Raúl Castro at a baseball game in 2016. Team Obama also pushed for Colombia’s surrender to the drug-trafficking terrorist group FARC in a so-called peace deal last year. And it supported “dialogue” last year to restore free, fair and transparent elections in Venezuela. The result, in every case, was disaster.

Any U.S.-led international strategy to liberate Venezuela must begin with the explicit recognition that Cuba is calling the shots in Caracas, and that Havana’s control of the oil nation is part of its wider regional strategy.

Slapping Mr. Maduro’s wrist with sanctions, as the Trump administration did last week, won’t change Castro’s behavior. He cares only about his cut-rate Venezuelan oil and his take of profits from drug trafficking. To affect things in Venezuela, the U.S. has to press Cuba.

Burning Cuban flags, when they can be had, is now practically a national pastime in Venezuela because Venezuelans understand the link between their suffering and Havana. The Castro infiltration began over a decade ago when Fidel sent thousands of Cuban agents, designated as teachers and medical personnel, to spread propaganda and establish communist cells in the barrios.

As I noted in this column last week, since 2005 Cuba has controlled Venezuela’s citizen-identification and passport offices, keeping files on every “enemy” of the state—a k a political opponents. The Venezuelan military and National Guard answer to Cuban generals. The Venezuelan armed forces are part of a giant drug-trafficking operation working with the FARC, which is the hemisphere’s largest cartel and also has longstanding ties to Cuba.

These are the tactical realities of the Cuba-Venezuela-Colombia nexus. The broader strategic threat to U.S. interests, including Cuba’s cozy relationship with Middle East terrorists, cannot be ignored.

Elisabeth Burgos is the Venezuelan ex-wife of the French Marxist Regis Debray. She was born in Valencia, joined the Castro cause as a young woman, and worked for its ideals on the South American continent.

Ms. Burgos eventually broke free of the intellectual bonds of communism and has lived in Paris for many years. In a recent telephone interview—posted on the Venezuelan website Prodavinci—she warned of the risks of the “Cuban project” for the region. “Wherever the Cubans have been, everything ends in tragedy,” she told Venezuelan journalist Hugo Prieto. “Surely we have no idea what forces we face,” Mr. Prieto observed—reflecting as a Venezuelan on the words of Ms. Burgos—because, as she said, there is “a lot of naiveté, a lot of ignorance, about the apparatus that has fallen on [Venezuelans]: Castroism.”

Cuban control of citizens is as important as control of the military. In Cuba this is the job of the Interior Ministry. For that level of control in Venezuela, Ms. Burgos said, Mr. Maduro must rely on an “elite of exceptional experts” Castro grooms at home.

Cuba, Ms. Burgos said, is not “simply a dictatorship.” For the regime it is a “historical political project” aiming for “the establishment of a Cuban-type regime throughout Latin America.” She noted that along with Venezuela the Cubans have taken Nicaragua, Bolivia, Ecuador, and are now going after Colombia. “The FARC, turned into a political party and with all the money of [the narcotics business], in an election can buy all the votes that it wants.”

Mr. Tillerson is forewarned. Castro won’t stop until someone stops him. To get results, any U.S.-led sanctions have to hit the resources that Havana relies on to maintain the repression.

Refugee contractors launch campaign for a minimum of 75,000 refugees for FY18

In mid-September the Trump Administration will be sending its ‘Presidential determination’ to the Hill.

The determination will set the CEILING for the number of refugees the President would like to see admitted to the US and sets priorities for what regions of the world will be the source of those refugees.

It also tells Congress how much money the Administration needs to get that job done.

For the umpteenth time, the number is a ceiling that is rarely reached.

The contractors*** are telling their followers that the magic number for FY18 is 75,000.  They must be taking a new tack because at this time last year they were asking Obama for 200,000.  I suspect they know the situation is bad for their budgets and they need more than 50,000 (paying refugee clients) to stay afloat.

By the way, Trump reset the ceiling for FY17 to 50,000.

And, as  of this morning (according to Wrapsnet) Trump is at 50,672.  This is the first time in the history of the program that the ceiling has been surpassed.

For the eight years of the Obama Administration the average number of admissions was 69,683 (see here). The average would have been much lower if it weren’t for his last year, an outlier, of nearly 85,000.

So, if Trump goes to 75,000 for FY18, which begins October 1, he will be proposing to bring in more refugees than Obama’s average.

Ginning up their base!

In an August recess toolkit prepared by the Refugee Council USA (the lobbying arm of the refugee industry), here is what they are telling their activists (and using your tax dollars for their community organizing!):

Trump’s attacks on refugees, immigrants, and their families are morally detestable, discriminatory, and violate our sacred honor to protect the most vulnerable among us. Right now, we need Congress to urge the administration to resettle at least 75,000 refugees next year and protect DACA. Congress must also robustly fund refugee assistance overseas and the U.S. refugee resettlement program, at minimum at last year’s levels, and reduce funding for mass immigration detention, deportation, and border militarization.

One of the most active of the activist groups is the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) which has instructions to its supporters on what to say to Washington Representatives and Senators.

They know that the Republican Congress can be manipulated easily by public opinion on this issue because the establishment GOP fears being labeled racist AND many R’s are beholden to the Chamber of Commerce, big business and global corporations looking for more consumers and a ready supply of cheap labor.

NOTE: The Federal contractors/middlemen/employment agencies/propagandists/lobbyists/community organizers? paid by you to place refugees in your towns and cities are below.  Under the nine major contractors are hundreds of subcontractors.

The contractors income is largely dependent on taxpayer dollars based on the number of refugees admitted to the US, but they also receive myriad grants to service their “New Americans.”

If you are a good-hearted soul and think refugee resettlement is all about humanitarianism, think again! Big businesses depend on the free flow of cheap (some call it slave) labor.

The only way for real reform of how the US admits refugees is to remove these contractors/Leftwing activists from the process.

‘When Was America Ever Great,’ You Ask? Here’s My Answer…

Celebrating Independence Day and watching President Trump on the international stage during the G20 Summit, I couldn’t help but reflect upon a recent conversation I had with one of my “Hollywood” friends.

This friend is a self-proclaimed liberal and sees absolutely no value in anything Republican!

I remember having many conversations with him during last year’s presidential campaign and talking to him about Trump’s tagline, “Make America Great Again” (MAGA).

Even though, I’d heard his retort before from liberals, both Black and White, I was still shocked when he asked, “When was America ever great?”

When I’ve heard this response from liberals in the past, it’s usually followed with ad hominem attacks on America, beginning with slavery, then Jim Crow, segregation, police killings of unarmed Blacks, etc.

These assertions are undeniably factual, but to end there is like reading the first chapter of a book that opens with a murder and concluding that the whole book is about that one event.

Slavery and racism are still the biggest blemishes on America’s history, but because we are Americans and showed resolve, we also have one helluva redemption story to tell. We have come a long way from the days of slavery and Jim Crow.

Here are a few questions for my liberal friends. If America is so racist, how did we elect a Black man as president? If America is so racist, how did we have two consecutive Black secretaries of state (Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice)? If America is so racist, how did we have two consecutive attorneys general (Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch)? If America is so racist, how are African-Americans making millions of dollars in sports, music, business and technology?

Name me one other major power that can make the claim that Black people have these opportunities in their country. Germany can’t. Britain can’t. China can’t. Australia can’t. France can’t. I think you get my point.

During a time when all Americans should be celebrating the progress we’ve made as a nation on our journey towards redemption, liberals seem to want to focus on our past.

So, to answer my Hollywood friend’s original question, “When was America ever great?” my response is very simple.

America was great when former President Lincoln freed the slaves. America was great when Congress passed the Civil and Voting Rights Acts in the 60s. America was great when they elected the first Black president in 2008. America was great when we witnessed, yet again, the peaceful transfer of power to Donald Trump from Barack Obama, despite just witnessing one of the nastiest presidential elections in our nation’s history.

America will always be great as long as we accept the will of the American people, when it comes to our free and fair elections. You don’t have to like the choice, but you must accept the result.

This is what makes America great.

Has America lived up to the words in the Declaration of Independence?

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness?”

No, we still have a long way to go, but we have made remarkable progress.

Isn’t it amazing that the very liberals who criticize this country never, ever seriously consider leaving the country? Despite all of our nation’s faults, where else could those liberals go and still have this type of freedom and opportunity?

We must get back to our founding principles; love of God, love of country; and love of our people.

Academy Award winning actor, Denzel Washington made this point in a phenomenal graduation speech he gave two years ago to the students of Dillard University in New Orleans, La., one of our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). It was one of the shortest, yet, most powerful speeches I have ever heard.

Liberals must stop obsessing about America’s racial past and focus on America’s promise. We must not live our lives in fear of loss; we must live our lives in hope of gain.

America is not as bad as it used to be and not as good as it can be.

It’s like President Obama said: “We are the change that we seek.”

Liberals are great at complaining about problems, but rarely if ever provide any practical solutions to their complaints.

On this day and every day, we have the freedom to be free. Respecting this freedom, for everyone, is how we all can truly “Make America Great Again.”
