Ukraine Grants Citizens the Right to Bear Arms—Hours Before Putin’s Invasion

The right to bear arms has always been about liberty, and many are beginning to see in the wake of the conflict in Ukraine.


Russian soldiers flooded into Ukraine Thursday under orders from President Vladimir Putin, threatening to obliterate a peace that has existed on the European continent for more than 75 years.

News reports say cities were bombarded by land, air, and sea, and Ukrainian forces were struggling to hold ground surrounding Kiev, Ukraine’s capital, against tens of thousands of Russian soldiers.

Prior to the attack, Ukrainian officials took steps to help Ukrainian civilians protect themselves.

“Ukraine’s parliament on Wednesday voted to approve in the first reading a draft law which gives permission to Ukrainians to carry firearms and act in self-defense,” Reuters reported.

The 30-day emergency order, National Review reports, would “grant citizens the right to bear arms.” It would also allow the government to conscript Ukrainians between the ages of 18 and 60, “adding nearly 200,000 troops to the country’s defense.”

Permitting Ukrainians to arm themselves is a sensible measure. But as Charles Cooke points out at NRO, “it’s also a bit late.”

While Ukraine has relatively loose gun control laws by European standards, estimates suggest only about 1.3 million firearms exist in the country, which has a population of some 43 million. This diminishes the chances of Ukrainian civilians being able to offer serious resistance, an idea that is hardly far-fetched, Stephen Gutowski points out at The Reload:

“…the history of warfare is rife with examples of smaller, weaker, and less organized forces besting even the greatest militaries in the world. From the American Revolution to Vietnam, Iraq, and multiple wars in Afghanistan, it isn’t difficult to find templates for how a Ukrainian resistance could eventually prevail if Russia attempts to capture and hold it.”

Speaking on CNN, Nina Lvovna Khrushcheva, a professor of international affairs at the New School in New York, also said small arms could be decisive.

“If every Ukrainian takes a gun, Russians don’t have a prayer,” she told John Berman. “I mean the military can fight, but… Ukrainians are really ready today.”

Ukrainian leaders apparently agree. The government on Thursday took the unusual step of issuing thousands of automatic weapons to civilians, following the issuance of its emergency order.

Unfortunately, the likelihood of serious resistance is low because the Ukrainian government embraced the right to bear arms so late.

“Next time,” Cooke points out, “bear arms earlier.”

Cooke’s words could be construed as flippant, but his point is a deadly serious one.

The Founding Fathers enshrined the right to bear arms in the Second Amendment of the Constitution, and they made it clear that they were not “granting” citizens the right, but codifying what was a natural right.

“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,” James Madison, the Father of the Constitution, explained in 1789. “A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country.”

As some astute observers pointed out on social media, the Second Amendment was never “about hunting” or even self-defense (in a civil sense). It was always about liberty.

“This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty,” the legal scholar Tucker St. George wrote in 1803. “The right of self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine this right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction.”

These sentiments were echoed decades later by Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story in Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States.

“The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers,” Story wrote, “and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them.”

It’s wonderful that Ukrainian officials finally sought to extend the full, natural right to bear arms to their people. The only tragedy is that it took so long.

Thanks so much for joining us tonight. So, without even getting into whether or not Ukraine is a democracy – I’m embarrassed to even – I mean, who cares. But I want to know what the effect on the United States and on the purchasing power of the average person, is likely to be from what they’re doing right now over there.

MORANO: “We are already seeing – the first part of it is in California, $6 a gallon. Gas is already up a dollar. Estimates are seven, $8 a gallon possible with recession if Putin, who we’ve given all of this power to by literally shutting down U.S. domestic energy.

Just a little history lesson here. In 2020, the United States was back to 1952 with energy, not just independence, but energy dominance. We were the world’s largest oil and gas producer. More energy exports and imports, more energy production than consumption and we hadn’t done that since Harry Truman was president. Joe Biden came in at he said the first thing he wanted to do was jail fossil fuel executives. Biden’s energy secretary had done a video singing about no more gasoline, The is world aflame due to global warming.

Biden – by the way – Biden – I’m sorry, Obama’s energy secretary (Chu) said he wanted European-style gas prices. So what happened as he started shutting down the Keystone pipelinebanning drilling on federal lands and Anwar, and defunding energy projects through banks through environmental social governance (ESG). All sorts of things.

So a war on fossil fuels happens. We are now in a much, much weaker position one year into this administration to where now Vladimir Putin is the direct beneficiary of all this. And you can’t keep Europe out of this. Europe is many years ahead of their version of a disastrous Green New Deal. One professor in Europe actually said it’s typical Marxist garbage — what they’ve engaged in. Europe began shutting down their energy, so the whole world has been empowering basically three places. The Middle East for the OPECChina, and now of course Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

So the people that are screaming the loudest that we need to go in and save democracy in Ukraine have destroyed our energy independence and dominance and made us so much more vulnerable to whatever Vladimir Putin may or may not want to do.”

Tucker Carlson: If you’re making energy more important for your own people, you are these we hate your own people. I think it’s that simple. In one sentence just if you could answer this question, is the Chinese government, which clearly has no respect for human rights or even its own people, are they making energy more expensive for Chinese?

Morano: No, there are estimates they build about a coal plant a week, they are about 50% of the world’s coal production. They laugh at all of these restrictions, but they were supplying most of our solar panels.

Tucker Carlson: Exactly!

Morano: But here’s the thing. They are not going to learn. Academia has been calling these energy restrictions for decades. This energy policy, what have they done? “the Washington Post” a few months ago actually said that we – if Jimmy Carter had won a second term there would be no climate crisis. They lamented that Ronald Reagan won. To the academia and media elites, Jimmy Carter’s first term was a model, and that’s what they want to do and that’s what we’re facing here.

John Kerry wants to have an urgent climate summit. He announced on Monday. In the midst of all of this, he believes the climate is the greatest threat. Their energy policy is the greatest national security threat we face.

That Mohammed Patman would be appalled by his daughter becoming a porn star is understandable, although it’s hard to tell whether or not he was more angered by her leaving Islam and marrying a Jewish man. But being appalled is one thing, and trying to have her killed is quite another.

In the Qur’an, a mysterious figure, known as Khidr in Islamic tradition, kills a boy in an apparently random and gratuitous attack. He then explains: “And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief. So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy.” (18:80-81)

And according to Islamic law, “retaliation is obligatory against anyone who kills a human being purely intentionally and without right.” However, “not subject to retaliation” is “a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring’s offspring.” (Reliance of the Traveller o1.1-2).

Muslims commit 91 percent of honor killings worldwide. The Palestinian Authority gives pardons or suspended sentences for honor murders. Iraqi women have asked for tougher sentences for Islamic honor murderers, who get off lightly now. Syria in 2009 scrapped a law limiting the length of sentences for honor killings, but “the new law says a man can still benefit from extenuating circumstances in crimes of passion or honour ‘provided he serves a prison term of no less than two years in the case of killing.’” And in 2003 the Jordanian Parliament voted down on Islamic grounds a provision designed to stiffen penalties for honor killings. Al-Jazeera reported that “Islamists and conservatives said the laws violated religious traditions and would destroy families and values.” In Iran, according to the New York Times, the legal system “treats parents who murder their children with relative leniency, as the maximum sentence for the crime is only ten years.”

But Ali didn’t find life in England any easier, saying she felt suffocated growing up in a strict Muslim household.

As a teenager, she “escaped” from her family and tied the knot with Jewish photographer David Cohen. She renounced her religion, “unlocked” her sexual side and embarked on a kinky career as an adult actress.

In 2020, Ali was thrust into the headlines after her father and his cousin were arrested for an alleged plot to have her killed because she had “disgraced the family” by getting into porn.

Dad Mohammed Patman and cousin Darya Khan Safi were also said to be outraged that she married a Jew.

It’s alleged that in August 2018, Patman flew to Slovakia and was “actively searching” for Ali. A hitman allegedly stated that he would kill the porn star for $70,000. Patman and Safi are now in the process of being extradited to Slovakia.

“I don’t have any contact with my family and they haven’t told me face-to-face how they feel about my career,” Ali told The Post. “My parents always instilled fear in me — God, hell, punishments.”

“If I left Islam, my father threatened to kill me for tarnishing Islam, the Afghan culture and the family’s honor,” the star — who is now an avowed atheist — continued….

It’s a “time of choosing” for CDC scientists and physicians in the wake of the blockbuster New York Times story citing unnamed agency officials who acknowledge crucial COVID data has been withheld for fear that it would be misinterpreted by critics, said Dr. Robert Malone in an interview Wednesday with Steve Bannon’s “War Room.”

“There’s going to come a time soon where there are legal ramifications … and these physicians and scientists at the CDC have got a choice to make now,” said Malone, the original inventor of the mRNA technology platform on which the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID vaccines are based.

“It’s a question of which side of the bar do you want to be on,” he said. “Do you want to be a witness? Or do you want to be on the defense? That’s where we’re at.”

The “War Room” segment opened with a clip from WND’s interview Monday with Malone and Idaho pathologist Dr. Ryan Cole in which they described the CDC’s withholding of data necessary for government leaders and health officials to make life-and-death decision as “scientific fraud.”

Malone told Bannon that if he were still an academic and published an epidemiological paper that came to a preconceived conclusion “by deleting data and not reporting the full picture,” he would lose his grants, be tossed out of the university and “be convicted of scientific fraud.”

He said the CDC physicians and scientists “who are hiding are going to be outed at some point, and they might as well come clean now, because it’s going to bite them later.”

Amid alarm raised by the nearly 24,000 suspected vaccine-related deaths reported to the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System database, the Times reported that when the CDC “published the first significant data on the effectiveness of boosters in adults younger than 65 two weeks ago, it left out the numbers for a huge portion of that population: 18- to 49-year-olds, the group least likely to benefit from extra shots.”

The CDC, the Times reported, “has been routinely collecting information since the Covid vaccines were first rolled out last year,” but the agency “has been reluctant to make those figures public, the official said, because they might be misinterpreted as the vaccines being ineffective.”

The report said that “[t]wo full years into the pandemic, the agency leading the country’s response to the public health emergency has published only a tiny fraction of the data it has collected,” citing “several people familiar” with the withheld data.

“Much of the withheld information could help state and local health officials better target their efforts to bring the virus under control,” the paper said.

How a Mindless Climate War on Energy Surrendered Ukraine

Delusional Western nation anti-hydrocarbon energy policies premised upon combating climate change as the “greatest existential threat” are being exploited by far more immediate and formidable adversaries.

We are currently witnessing tragic consequences play out in failures of Russian oil and gas-dependent NATO allies — Germany in particular — to dissuade and counter savage Putin aggression against Ukraine.

Add to this, a concurrent Biden administration policy disaster which has simultaneously terminated U.S. energy independence while also depleting export capacities to reduce E.U. dependence on those Russian supplies.

Germany, a dominant E.U. economic power and notable NATO skinflint (only 1.5% GDP for military) depends on Russia for over half of its natural gas and a quarter of its oil imports.

Let’s all be reminded that NATO was created in 1949 by the U.S., Canada, and several E.U. countries expressly for this very reason: to provide collective security against then-Soviet Union expansionism following the Second World War.

Whereas America has no treaty obligation nor popular desire to engage our troops in a non-NATO member Ukraine war, let’s nevertheless also recall a 1994 commitment called the Budapest Memorandum in which the U.S., Great Britain and Russia guaranteed Ukraine security protections in exchange for a very big military concession.

The memo begins by noting that Ukraine had committed “to eliminate all nuclear weapons from its territory within a specified period of time.”

That stockpile included some 1,800 nuclear devices, all of which were returned to Russia by 1996.

Those signatories — Russia included — “reaffirm[ed] their obligation to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine;” “pledged to “refrain from economic coercion” against Ukraine; and agreed to “seek immediate United Nations Security Council action to provide assistance to Ukraine” in the event of an “act of aggression” against the country.

With converging and compounding consequences, U.N.-promoted climate alarmism over fossil burning energy greenhouse gas emissions inexplicably prompted a plan hatched about 20 years ago by then-German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder to also phase out non-carbon emission nuclear energy over three decades.

Alabama Solar Factory to Close After Joe Biden Guts U.S. Tariffs on China

Huntsville, Alabama, solar panel factory will close after President Joe Biden exempted foreign-made bifacial solar panels from United States tariffs earlier this month.

LG Electronics, a South Korea-based company, announced that it will be closing its Huntsville solar panel manufacturing operation, resulting in the layoffs of about 160 American employees and another 60 Americans who are employed as contract workers.

Executives said they hope to retain as many employees as they can by transitioning them into the company’s other business and manufacturing sectors at its Huntsville campus. Laid-off employees will receive severance packages.

The announcement comes just weeks after Biden decided to exempt foreign-made bifacial solar panels — the overwhelming majority of which come from China — from Section 201 tariffs on solar imports to the United States that were first imposed by former President Trump in January 2018 at a 30 percent rate.

The Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA) had warned that Biden’s gutting U.S. tariffs on China-made bifacial solar panels would have a devastating impact on America’s solar manufacturing sector.

“China sympathizers may believe that gutting the 201 solar tariffs would not affect the U.S. solar manufacturing industry as long as Congress supports domestic producers. This is flat-out wrong,” CPA Chairman Zach Mottl said in a statement:

Without trade remedies to level the playing field for U.S. solar manufacturers that are competing against heavily subsidized Chinese companies, it won’t matter if Congress passes a domestic tax credit for American producers. [Emphasis added]

Shortly after Trump imposed the U.S. tariffs on solar imports, LG Electronics announced that they would expand their Huntsville campus to include manufacturing solar panels — a boon for the city’s local economy as every one factory job supports an additional 7.4 jobs.

In November, as Breitbart News reported, Biden’s Commerce Department sided with Chinese solar manufacturers who produce their products in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam by denying a request from American solar manufacturers to investigate U.S. tariff evasion.

Biden had been lobbied by 12 Senate Democrats who sent a letter asking the administration not to impose any tariffs on the products made in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam by the Chinese solar manufacturers.

From 2001 to 2018, U.S. free trade with China has cost Alabama at least 50,700 jobs or about 2.5 percent of the state’s employment. A previous study found that permanent 25 percent tariffs on China-made products imported to the U.S. market would create a million American jobs in five years.

Why Arabs Do Not Trust the Biden Administration

If and when the Biden administration signs a new deal with Iran, the sense of betrayal in the Arab world is extremely likely to broaden.

As the Biden administration and other world powers continue to negotiate with the Iranians about reviving the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), there is growing concern in the Arab world about the destructive actions and policies of Iran and its proxies, especially the Houthi militia in Yemen.

Prominent Arab political analysts, commentators and journalists are continuing to express fear about Iran’s “expansionist” schemes in the Arab countries, especially Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. They say they are worried that a return to the JCPOA would further embolden the mullahs in Tehran and the Iranian-backed terrorist groups.

The Arabs are saying that they cannot understand the Biden administration’s reluctance to re-designate the Houthi militia as a terrorist organization, particularly after the recent drone and missile attacks on Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

To many, the hesitation of the Biden administration is incomprehensible. The White House and the National Security Council are apparently open to redesignating the Houthis as a “foreign terrorist organization” while the State Department supports targeting specific Houthi leaders with sanctions. The question is why? One could do both.

Another question is: Has the Yemen crisis become a political issue rather than a humanitarian one?

Moreover, why are aid organizations insisting on aid coming through Hodeidah port when there are six ports (Aden, al-Mukalla, al-Salif, Nishtun, and al-Shihr); land border inflows via al-Wadiah and al-Khadra (on the Saudi border) and Shahan and Serfit (on the Omani border); plus aerial deliveries via Marib?

Judging from the Houthis’ recent heightened aggression, many in the Arab world are asking: why are the Houthis not immediately being designated as a “foreign terrorist organization” again?

Isn’t this a “humanitarian” position really a political choice in favor of the terrorist organization, the Houthis? Should the U.S. instead not be finding the best means to deliver aid to the suffering people of Yemen?

Encouraging terrorism

The Arabs are also warning that Biden’s decision last year to delist the Houthis as a “foreign terrorist organization” has only encouraged the militia to pursue its aggression against the Yemeni people — the very people about whom the Biden administration is claiming to have “humanitarian” concerns — as well as the neighboring countries.

“Biden’s decision to remove the Iranian-backed Houthis from the list of terrorist organizations has encouraged the militia to expand its terrorist operations, especially against the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, wrote Emirati political analyst Dr. Amal Al-Haddabi.

Al-Haddabi argued that the terrorist attacks of the Houthis against Emirati civilian facilities during the past weeks, and the ongoing crimes against the people of Yemen and Saudi, “constitutes conclusive evidence of the nature of this terrorist militia.”

“However, international moves aimed at classifying the Houthi militia as a terrorist organization are still slow and disproportionate to the [Houthi] militia’s crimes, which constitute a flagrant violation of international law and a real threat to civilian facilities, energy supplies and economic stability.”

Al-Haddabi warned that the failure of the Biden administration and the international community to designate the Houthi militia as a terrorist organization poses “a threat to regional peace and security and harms international peace and security.”

The Houthi terrorist attacks, she added, prove that the Biden administration’s assumption that the militia can be dealt with as if it were a partner for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Yemen is wrong.

“The Biden administration has forgotten that militias are an arm of external forces that use them to achieve their own agendas, and they are not concerned with the interests of the Yemeni people or their need for peace and development,” Al-Haddabi said, noting that Biden recently stated that his administration was considering the possibility of putting the Houthis back on the terrorism list.

“All the requirements and conditions for designating the Houthis as a terrorist organization are available, and Biden sees them clearly… In Yemen, it is difficult to list all the crimes committed by these militias against civilians.”

“According to statistics and data announced by the Arab Coalition Forces to support legitimacy in Yemen, the Houthi militia launched 372 ballistic missiles and 659 booby-trapped drones towards Saudi Arabia by the end of January 2022. These are just examples of Houthi crimes.

“The international community in general, and the U.S. in particular, has become fully aware of the terrorist nature of the Houthi militia, and therefore this awareness must be accompanied by a serious and quick move to classify this militia as a terrorist organization.”

“This move will not harm efforts for reaching a peaceful settlement in Yemen. On the contrary, it will be a decisive and firm message from the international community that it will not accept this terrorist behavior from the Houthis. The inclusion of militias on terrorist lists will limit Iran’s financial and military support for the Houthis.”

‘Iran’s arms in the region’

Egyptian political scientist Ali Al-Din Hilal said that he, too, cannot understand why the Biden administration has still not redesignated the Houthis: “How much time,” he asked, “does the Biden administration need to make a decision [to reinstate the Houthis to the terrorism list]?” he asked.

Hilal noted that Biden removed the Houthis from the terrorism list one month after taking office on the pretext that he wanted to contain the organization and open channels of communication with it.

“The removal of the organization from the list of terrorism did not result in a change in the Houthi militia’s behavior,” he wrote. “It continued to reject all initiatives and proposals for a ceasefire and the start of political negotiations to reach a peaceful solution to the conflict [in Yemen]”.

“The Houthis rejected and blocked all initiatives from the United Nations and the U.S. Then there are the Houthis’ attempts to disrupt navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait [in the Red Sea, between Yemen to the east and Africa to the west] and threaten ships,” he added.

The Egyptian political scientist also noted that the Houthis attacked the U.S. embassy building in Sana’a last November, looting its contents and detaining a number of Yemeni workers.

“The Houthi militia is one of Iran’s arms in the region and a tool for implementing its policy, and the attacks on Saudi Arabia and the UAE are not limited to destabilizing security in the region, but also aim to pressure Washington and influence its positions in the Vienna talks on the Iranian nuclear issue… The civilian targets that were attacked are close to populated areas, which makes the attack on them a terrorist act. The seriousness of this matter increases as the Houthi militia may expand its attacks,” he stated.

Biden didn’t learn the lesson

Emile Amen, another Egyptian writer and researcher, urged the Biden administration not to waste more time.

According to Amen, Biden wasted a whole year believing that he could extend the olive branch to Iran’s mullahs by removing the Houthis from the terrorism list as a way of paving the way for a nuclear deal with Tehran.

“The current situation is no longer bearable for new American diplomatic approaches with the Houthis,” he said.

“The Biden administration must quickly characterize the Houthi militia as one of the major terrorist forces of evil. Afterwards, the Biden administration should return to supporting the path of the Saudi-led Arab Coalition Forces…

“The great and original sin of the Democratic Party today is the harmful role played by the left-wing Democrats who are pressuring Biden not to designate the Houthis as a terrorist organization.”

Amen said that Biden did not learn the lesson from Barack Obama’s experience “because the infamous agreement with Iran in 2015 did not lead to Iran’s retreat from supporting its proxies in the region and its growing terrorism, especially after it received billions of dollars that were frozen in the U.S.”

“The Biden administration cannot argue by saying that it does not want to get involved in Yemen. This is a version that takes us back to the philosophy of Barack Obama, known as the ‘leading from behind,’ which led to the exacerbation of the crises in Syria, Yemen and other places. The Biden administration should quickly and without any delay classify the Houthis as a terrorist group.”

‘Hitler of the Middle East’

Saudi columnist Professor Mohammed Mufti stressed that the “rogue regime” in Iran does not seem to be deterred by the talk about economic sanctions because anyway it does not care about the welfare of its people:

“On the contrary, the Iranian regime is good at exploiting the weapon of sanctions imposed by Western countries to further humiliate its people… At a time when Western countries — through the Vienna negotiations — are desperate to reach an agreement that would ensure Iran’s nuclear restraint, the Iranian regime, through its proxies and military arms, continues to attack the sovereignty of many neighboring countries, including, of course, some Gulf countries.”

“This clearly shows Iran’s indifference to what is happening at the negotiating table and proves that Tehran views the negotiations only through a unilateral perspective — to lift the economic sanctions imposed on it without making any serious concessions.”

Mufti noted that Iran has continued to develop its nuclear activities unabated and without interruption despite the ongoing negotiations in Vienna.

“With each new round of negotiations, Iran consolidates its gains and accelerates its destructive project [in the region]. With each new round of negotiations, the situation deteriorates more and more until it appears as if there is no solution.”

Former Jordanian minister of culture Saleh Al-Kallab also warned against Iran’s dangerous ambitions in Arab countries:

“Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has come to consider himself the president of Lebanon, Syria and other Arab countries, and this is because he relies on 90,000 [members of] forces affiliated with Tehran…”

“Unfortunately, Iran has actually achieved some of its colonial aspirations, especially in Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Iran has also tried to create unrest in other Arab counties. It has become a very dangerous occupation state. It has become more dangerous to the Arabs than the ‘Zionist enemy.’”

“When Iran’s Supreme Leader is described as the ‘Hitler of the Middle East,’ this is not a departure from the truth. Iran is no longer a neighboring and brotherly border state as some believed. It has become an authoritarian and tyrannical state in this region. The problem is that Iran has infiltrated some Arab countries in the political, security and military fields.”

Sense of betrayal

Sawsan Al-Sha’er, a prominent journalist and author from Bahrain, warned that any attempt to deal with the Iranian regime on a rational basis is doomed to failure. “They [the Iranians] are exporting assassination squads, weapons and drugs to any part of the world,” Al-Sha’er wrote.

Yemeni politician Mujib Al-Maqtari said that designating the Houthis as a terrorist organization will isolate the militia and stifle its foreign funds and Iranian support. He pointed out that the crimes committed by the Houthis since 2014 amount to crimes of international terrorism, including the recruitment of children and targeting civilian facilities with ballistic missiles.

“Categorizing the Houthi militia as a terrorist group will paralyze its movements, and freeze internal support or local financiers,” Al-Maqtari said. “It will place all groups and individuals who support them under sanctions by freezing their assets and property.”

These voices from the Arab world articulate a profound concern on the part of Arabs about the Biden administration’s attitude towards Iran and the Houthi terrorist militia. For these Arabs, the Biden administration cares little for the security and stability of its friends and allies in the Arab world.

If and when the Biden administration signs a new deal with Iran, the sense of betrayal in the Arab world is extremely likely to broaden. The U.S. may then find out that it is the Americans who have been delisted as untrustworthy friends and allies by the people of the Middle East.

The Experts, Science, Medicine––All Amazing, All Fallible

“GOD HELP US ALL”


For thousands of years, going back to the Bible, women have wept and grieved and pleaded to God over their miscarriages. Indeed, it took all these millennia for modern-day pharmaceutical companies to develop solutions to this ongoing nightmare.

In the 1940s, they were happy to offer doctors the ability to prescribe diethylstilbestrol (DES) to prevent miscarriage. “You can tell them you would give it to your wife,” the marketing mavens from Big Pharma suggested to physicians.

And with good reason. This “miracle drug” worked! Women who had experienced no trouble conceiving but were plagued by constant miscarriages were now able to carry their babies to term and deliver quite “perfect” bundles of joy!

But then disaster hit with unspeakable horror. After one or two years of watching their beautiful babies smile and roll over and teethe and then walk and speak and thrive, the little girls began developing hideous vaginal cancers, and those who survived to adulthood experienced higher-than-normal premature births, miscarriages, and ectopic pregnancies.

The little boys, too, had horrible anomalies in their urogenital tracts and are still being watched for higher-than-average cases of testicular and prostate cancers.

In 1971, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took DES off the market.

So much for the science!

SECOND TIME’S A CHARM

In 1957, another miracle medication, originally marketed as a sleeping pill but also found to prevent miscarriages, was developed in West Germany, and soon found its way to America, where women eagerly took the drug––approved by the FDA––and, again, were thrilled to carry their babies to term.

But unlike DES, where the monstrous effects took months to years to develop, the grotesque and tragic effects of the new drug––Thalidomide––were obvious from the moment of birth: children born with missing arms and legs, eye and urinary tract anomalies, heart problems, et al. The list of horrors went on and on.

So much for the science!

FEMINIST PROGRESS

In 1960, the FDA approved the medication developed by Dr. John Rock, a Harvard professor and obstetrician-gynecologist with five children––along with Drs. Gregory Pincus, C.M. Phang, and Selzo Garcia––that was perhaps the most world-changing medication in history––the Pill (aka the birth-control pill), where for the first time ever women could control reproduction.

But some women––either through negligence or forgetfulness––still got pregnant while on The Pill, and so it was not long before scientists developed intrauterine devices (IUDs) that could be implanted in the cervix and provide absolute sexual freedom with no anxiety about forgetting to take a pill or getting pregnant.

Among the most highly touted IUDs was the FDA-approved Copper 7. But because of the horrific incidences of sterility, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancies and perforations of the uterus, the much-vaunted Copper 7 was taken off the market in January of 1986.

So much for the science!

PLEASE, DOCTOR, STOP THOSE HOT FLASHES!

As the ‘60s progressed, newly empowered women did not politely request but quite assertively demanded help for the tortures they experienced during menopause, when estrogen slowly diminishes in the female body, resulting in hot flashes, mood swings, loss of interest in sex, depression, et al.

Pharmaceutical companies were more than happy to accommodate and promptly offered estrogen-rich Hormone Replacement Therapy, although even the National Institutes of Health acknowledges the controversial history of HRT.

It took decades, but sure enough––after almost 40 years––a Wall Street Journal article reported on the frighteningly high correlation between HRT and breast cancer. Within days, in 2002, one of the most popular medications in the world––Premarin––was taken off the market.

So much for the science!

NOT JUST A WOMAN THING

Indeed, dozens of FDA-approved medications––for both women and men––have been widely prescribed but ultimately taken off the market.  They include the antihistamine Seldane, the anti-inflammatory Vioxx, the anti-heartburn/acid reflux Zantac, et al.

In fact. dozens of drugs have been pulled from the market because of their horrific if not catastrophic side effects, including cancers, strokes, heart attacks, and death! Here is a partial list.

So much for the science!

WHAT WE HAVEN’T BEEN TOLD

Well, whaddaya know? Only three months into 2020, just when science and medicine were at the apogee of their evolution, when practically every body part––retina, heart, lung, knee, hip, skin, fingers, et al.–– can be replaced, when the fastest-growing segment of our population is between 90 and 100, and when there are more individuals over 100 in America than ever before, along comes a virus from China that in a matter of weeks shuts down the world!

But not to worry! We in America have “experts” to rely on, to guide us, to reassure us that it would only take a matter of weeks to “flatten the curve” on the frightening escalation of what, in no time, the same experts labeled a genuine pandemic.

As it turned out, every one of their models and projections and pronouncements and reassurances were wrong!

What they didn’t tell us about were the ineffectual-but-fanatically-enforced mask mandates and the non-FDA-approved “vaccines” that all “the experts” insisted every member of society––including infants––must be injected with, as well as the second vaccine, the booster, and the third and even fourth boosters––all of which did not flatten the curve or keep fully-vaccinated and boostered people out of the hospital with Covid!

What they also failed to tell us, as journalist and author Devvy Kidd reports, is that the FDA’s PCR test to determine the presence of Covid is not a diagnostic test and not reliable, as the CDC now admits.

It turned out that the Mt. Everest of information the “experts” withheld from the public, aided and abetted by their lapdogs in the media, were startling facts about the vaccines themselves––all scrupulously documented by writer Kelleigh Nelson––including the prediction that “because of the jabs, the immune system is dying. The result will be high incidences in various countries of tuberculosis where it is now dormant. Tumor cells are no longer under control causing increased numbers of cancers––as evidenced by pathologist Dr. Ryan Cole of Idaho––as well as viruses, herpes, Epstein-Barr, cytomegalovirus (CMV) which kills babies in the womb, toxoplasmosis, and a horrifying number of other illnesses.”

And is it true, as asserted by Sen. Scott Jensen (R-MN), who is a medical doctor, that hospitals get $13,000 per patient if they write that the diagnosis is Covid-19 on the patient’s chart, and $35,000 for each patient if they are on a ventilator? According to FactCheck.org, “The figures cited by Jensen generally square with estimated Medicare payments for COVID-19 hospitalizations, based on average Medicare payments for patients with similar diagnoses.”

And is this simply a coincidence? “Possibly as a reward for their efforts to conceal the true origin of SARS-CoV-2,” Janet Levy details in-depth, the scientists who went along with Dr. Fauci’s ‘natural origins’ narrative “received over $50 million in NIAID funding in 2020- 2021.”

Mmmm….isn’t it always about following the money?!

Then, to insult our intelligence even further, we have dictatorial, egomaniacal martinets like Dr. Anthony Fauci telling us: “The attacks on me are attacks on science.”

So much for the science!

THAT’S NOT ALL WE HAVEN’T BEEN TOLD

As journalist Tim Brown spells out, only two massive entities own all of the media we see and hear every minute of every day. These powerful and immensely wealthy forces believe in a globalist vision in which they––the Masters of the Universe––run the world, and we––mere grains of sand on the vast beaches of life––are expected to admire, believe, comply with and be grateful for whatever they’re doling out.

These moguls, including economic and big-tech powerhouses, hire media whores––I wrote about them here––to disseminate their messages, and, as we’ve all witnessed, to censor or often destroy the lives of all those who disagree with them.

Nevertheless, TRUTH has a way of insinuating its way or erupting its way into the public’s consciousness. This is what happened when contradictory or negative data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), from the World Health Organization (WHO), and from “experts” like Dr. Fauci himself were published by courageous media outlets, and frightening information by the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) made its way to the larger public.

And what was that frightening information?

What You Need to Know About Vax Passports, Digital IDs, CBDCs

In this interview, we take a deep dive into vaccine passports with Nick Corbishley, author of “Scanned: Why Vaccine Passports and Digital IDs Will Mean the End of Privacy and Personal Freedom.”

In my mind, there’s little doubt that the primary reason for the rollout of the COVID jabs was not for public health but to justify the rollout of vaccine passports, which in turn are just the first iteration of a much broader mechanism to surveil, track, manipulate and control the population of the world.

Corbishley has been a journalist, writing about politics, finance and privacy issues for the past decade. While based in Barcelona, Spain, he’s been contributing to two U.S. blogs since 2013.

“Israel was the first democratic country to launch digital IDs, in February, 2021, and when I started to see what was going on there, I began to get very concerned,” Corbishley says. “I wrote an article in April 2021, raising my concerns about the risks these vaccine passports posed.

Then, little by little, I began to see what’s happening in Europe. I began to see what was happening in Italy, in France, when the so called Green Pass was launched in June. This was a document that was supposed to be created to enable travel between countries in Europe.

Very quickly, it began to be used to control access to public services, access to public places within one’s own country. We were beginning to see restrictions that we’d never seen in our lifetime.

So, I began to write more and more and this brought me to the attention of the Vermont-based publisher, Chelsea Green. We had some conversations and we decided that there was an opportunity to write about something that everybody should know about. Even at this stage. It’s not being talked about anywhere near as much as it should be.”

Two Key Concerns

One of the primary concerns vaccine passports bring to the fore is related to privacy. If implemented, they will strip us of most of the privacy we’re used to. It’s quite clear that they are a precursor to digital identity and a far more invasive type of digital surveillance apparatus.

“The passports essentially function as a gateway to allow government to herd us into a totally new reality where our actions, our movements, our thoughts, our behavior are tracked and surveilled,” Corbishley says.

But it’s not just about surveillance. It’s also about forcing compliance, and that’s the second key concern.

“If we’ve learned one thing about the vaccine passport, this is about changing the way we relate to government, and it’s about changing the way government relates to us, the governed.

If you do not do exactly what the government says going forward, whether that is putting one jab inside your arm, whether is putting two jabs inside your arm, or however many jabs inside your arm, you will be deactivated. You will not be able to access the most basic services and the sort of places that we need to be able to participate in society and economy.”

Surveillance on Steroids

Of course, we’ve been under surveillance for many years already. All Google-related technologies are tracking and surveillance technologies. Our cell phones track and surveil us. Ditto for Facebook and other social media platforms. They’re all harvesting personal information and keeping tabs on everyone’s whereabouts.

We also know these technologies have been used to influence and manipulate people’s thoughts, beliefs and behavior. Up until now, however, all of that manipulation has been covert. The system that’s being erected now is unique and new in that the forced compliance will be, in many cases, overt — blatant and indisputable, as punishment will be tied to things like your personal finances and travel privileges.

Clearly, the vaccine passport is a platform to which they can add central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). So, as an example, the government could put out a political narrative, and if you vocalize disagreement, there goes access to your bank account. Or your travel privileges. Or your loan application.

With Google-based smart homes, it’s not even impossible to foresee a future in which you could simply be locked inside your home if you were to be labeled a dissenter. Or locked out of your home. Or they could shut off your utilities.

The possibilities to punish dissenters are endless when everyone and every THING is digitally identifiable, trackable and wirelessly connected. With a single keystroke, someone you don’t know can shut down your life, rendering you homeless and helpless.

Chances are, there won’t even be a live person anywhere for you to contact with your grievances. Much of the system will be run by artificial intelligence and various algorithms. It’s important to realize that if we accept vaccine passports, we’re basically giving our consent to everything that comes after, Corbishley warns. We’re accepting that this is our future.

Why We Must Reject Digital IDs and CBDCs

We must also remain alert to the rollout of other control mechanisms that are just as problematic as the vaccine passports, especially digital IDs and CBDCs, but also any number of other digital and biometric controls. As explained by Corbishley:

“Right now, in Canada, we’ve got the premier of Ontario saying that they are going to withdraw the vaccine passports. We’ve got Alberta saying it’s going to withdraw the vaccine passports.

This is the message we’re getting from all over the Western world. It’s like, ‘It’s time to take a step back. We are now going to let you live your life. We’re going to let some kind of normality return.’

You’re seeing Scandinavia talking about doing away with vaccine passports altogether. So, it’s interesting to see some countries using that language. But I think you have to be very careful because as they’re talking about doing this, they’re ushering in digital identity systems, which are going to be on a much grander scale than the vaccine passports …

They are instituting digital identity that is going to allow not just this kind of control of your vaccine status, but control of your tax records, control of your employment records … And they will include … your vaccine status. So, it’s extremely disingenuous. I think they are misleading their populations in a very dark way …

All of these things are happening, but the ultimate step is probably the central bank digital currencies, which are likely to come on board in the next three to five years.

The chairman of the Bank of International Settlements, Agustín Carstens, who used to be the chairman of the Bank of Mexico, openly said that the wonderful thing about central bank digital currencies is that it allows them to track everything you do.

What he didn’t say is that it allows them to deactivate an account. It allows them to stop people from being able to transact. They didn’t go that far. But he said that this is so different from cash. So yeah, people are not realizing just how this control grid is being built, little by little, piece by piece, but they need to start paying attention before it’s too late.”

They’re Building a Social Credit System

By now, many are familiar with the social credit system in China, or have at least heard of it. How does this system compare or relate to vaccine passports and digital IDs?

“I think that the social credit system in China is, to a certain extent, a template. It’s where governments probably want to go. They would like to be able to use the new technologies we have to nudge people into the right sorts of behaviors without having to use more overt punishment.

You can either reward people for doing the right sort of things, or you can give them a little digital spank every now and then when they’re doing the wrong sort of things. I think that that is where China is leading the way.

Ironically, in the research I did for my book, I found that while China’s ambitions with the credit social credit system are essentially unfettered — they want total control — they’re not there yet.

They’re still running quite a few pilot schemes. So, it depends where you are in China, the extent to which you are exposed to this kind of system, where you’re getting points for good behavior and where you’re getting points deducted for bad behavior.

But the template is there. You’ve also got companies like Ant Financial and Tencent. These are the equivalents of Google, Facebook, whatever, that are running their own social credits schemes within their own little universe. So, it’s a very complex situation in China. It’s not as complete as some might believe, but the intention, the ambition, is huge.

I would say that we are definitely seeing examples of this beginning to feed through into the West. We’re seeing banks talk about using our social media behavior to determine our credit score, which is very similar to what they’re doing in China. There’s clearly the means, and there’s clearly a desire to push in that direction.”

Unity Is the Challenge of Our Lifetime

The challenge we now face is that, to have any chance of preventing this control grid, we need to be unified. The problem is, many simply aren’t able to see the dangers. Most people under the age of 30 are used to doing just about everything on their phones, and the convenience of digital IDs and digital banking is alluring.

Organizations such as the World Economic Forum and many of the central banks that are pushing the rollout of this control grid can also make it impossible or near-impossible to live without a digital ID and CBDCs. Already, we’ve seen leaders saying, out loud, that their goal is to make life as difficult and inconvenient as possible for anyone without a vaccine passport. They’ll do the same for digital IDs and CBDCs.

“One of the best examples is Italy,” Corbishley says. “If you want to see a country that has really gone into sixth gear with the vaccine passports, it’s Italy. They’ve said, ‘Look, if you don’t have this document, you cannot work. You cannot get on a bus and go across town. You cannot get on the metro. You cannot access retail premises apart from supermarkets, pharmacies, petrol stations and pet stores.’

You have basically closed down, narrowed down the existence to such a limited one that most people end up just saying, ‘OK, let’s do it. I don’t have an alternative. I’m not going to survive this way.’

If you have a mortgage and your finances are already tight, and your government is telling you, you’re not going to be able to work, most people crumble, and so they’re able to do it …

A journalist in Canada was talking about the truckers, the Freedom Convoy. He was saying, ‘These guys don’t represent Canadians; 90% of Canadians have taken the vaccine and they’re all perfectly happy with the restrictions, the mandates.’ It’s like, how do you know how many of those 90% actually took the vaccine because they had no choice? It was a very disingenuous argument.”

How to Prepare for the Inevitable

While the situation is bleak and dire, Corbishley doesn’t believe vaccine passports, digital IDs and CBDCs are inevitable. “I think we’re in the midst of a major battle,” he says.

The question is, how can we win when all the cards seem stacked against us?

“I think that we have to, No. 1, inform as many people as possible. That’s why I wrote the book. I wrote the book hoping to reach people who maybe had been vaccinated, but were beginning to have certain doubts, people who were on the fence.

I mean, I know plenty of people who have had two shots, who are wary about having a third one. I know plenty of people who have had two shots, have had Omicron, and they’re now thinking, ‘Why the heck am I having to take a third shot?’ People are beginning to question this.

I think that we are in the midst of what can only be described as an existential battle. If we lose this battle, it can be very difficult, as individuals, to protect ourselves because the degree of control they will have over us is going to be huge.

I think there will be this creation of a parallel community, a parallel society, where people are able to function. We’re seeing signs of bartering beginning to take place within a community like that in Italy. They are surviving as best they can — and we’re talking about millions of people who haven’t crumbled. They’ve not given way yet.

That gives me a certain amount of hope. I think the fact that people have grown tired of the restrictions means that government is having to, to a certain extent, reconsider, but at the same time, they are pushing through digital IDs.

I think this is what is really important for people to understand. While they’re saying, ‘We are going to abandon the vaccine passports,’ in most countries where they’re saying this, that is not the case. In the U.K., they’ve not done that. They have simply shifted from a mandatory vaccine passport to a voluntary vaccine passport.

You’ve got vaccine passports very much in use for international travel. So, if you’re British, you want to travel to mainland Europe, if you’ve not got your vaccine passport, you’re not going to be able to go mainland. It’s the same if you’re European and want to go to the U.S.

So, there is so much happening it’s hard to keep track. That is coming from somebody who spends most of his day trying to keep track of these things. If you are just someone who is working a 9-to-5 job and you get home and you’ve got three kids to look after, it’s going to be much harder to keep abreast of these developments.

I have a certain amount of hope that they haven’t won yet. But it’s an immense amount of power they have. We are talking about organizations like the World Economic Forum, which represents hundreds of the most powerful companies on the planet. We’re talking about the most powerful governments on the planet.

So, it’s going to be a huge battle, and they’ve got most of the advantages in this battle. But I do think that what’s happening in Canada suggests a resistance can be formed. I think that resistance is growing in Germany. It’s certainly growing in Austria. The government is beginning to have second thoughts about the vaccine mandate.”

Expect Economic Collapse

There are also the growing economic risks, globally, to consider. The central banks around the world have painted themselves into a corner and they can’t get out. We are almost certain to see another financial crisis. It’s only a matter of when.

There is already clear evidence we are in the early stages of economic collapse, and that’s a parallel issue that needs to be taken into consideration when trying to predict what might happen with digital IDs and CBDCs, as they’re all connected. To prepare for an inevitable economic collapse, I would suggest focusing on improving your resiliency on a local level.

For example, make sure you have access to water supplies other than your tap, grow your own food and develop relationships with other local growers and farmers to build your food security.

These are very basic things that can save your life when everything collapses and your dollar, drachma or euro becomes fit for use as toilet paper. Having food, water, shelter and community makes you far more resistant to tyranny because if you don’t have these things, you need the government to provide them for you.

“I think the community is essential,” Corbishley says. “Having people who are of a similar mindset, of a similar worldview, people you can definitely count upon …

Resilience is going to be very tough. As a result of the lockdowns, small businesses are in serious straits. They’ve had to take on huge amounts of debt just to weather the lockdowns … There’s no doubt that large companies have much easier access to cheap debt than small companies …

This is tragic because small businesses are a fundamental cornerstone of the community. They’re a fundamental part of the global economy and, even more important than that, small businesses are run by independent people. If we begin to see a massive culling of small businesses, then we are going to see less independence and more dependence. So, that is one area which deeply concerns me …

I think the most important thing, and the hardest thing, is to maintain your humanity. I think that is fundamental and that is why having a community around you that you love and that loves you is absolutely essential to surviving this. I don’t think you can be an island and get through what’s coming.

Another thing I would suggest, if you do have money, if you have investments, is to diversify as much as possible — probably not best to have all your money in a bank, and especially not one bank …

If you look at countries like Mexico, going through the Tequila Crisis in the 1990s, or Brazil, going through the huge hyperinflation it had, how do you survive that relatively intact? When you own real assets, you own property. Maybe you own precious metals … In Turkey, inflation is absolutely surging and people are using gold, they are looking at cryptocurrencies. They are doing anything except keeping their money in Turkish lira.”

So, in closing, the best you can do right now is to educate yourself about the impending digital control grid, share information, resist and oppose any and all attempts to implement vaccine passports or digital IDs, take a stand for freedom, build community and prepare for deteriorating economic conditions by diversifying your monies and investments.

Sunni-Shi’a Jihad Comes to the University of Connecticut

For all we are told about the prevalence of “Islamophobia,” some might have assumed that “Islamophobes” disposed of the turbahs, but no, the culprits were Sunnis. The Sunni MSA condemned the vandalism and claimed that it had nothing to do with the incident, but dodged a meeting with the Shi’a to discuss concerns, and the Shi’a claim that the MSA’s apology was “neither direct nor official.”

Meanwhile, the Shi’a want “more events and educational opportunities” for students, so as “to eliminate misconceptions regarding the Shia sect.” This mirrors the longstanding and widespread claim that “Islamophobia” can be stamped out by seminars and outreach events that “eliminate misconceptions.” Such efforts never actually stamp out “Islamophobia” understood as suspicion or distrust of Islam except among the credulous and ill-informed, because the suspicion and distrust of many people regarding Islam is not based on “misconceptions” at all, but on an actual awareness of Islamic texts and teachings. Likewise the Shi’ites at the University of Connecticut will realize eventually, if they don’t actually know already, that the Sunni hatred for them stems not from “misconceptions,” but on Sunni teachings regarding Shi’a Islam as a heretical, twisted form of Islam. No educational efforts will undo that conviction.

UConn should oppose anti-Shia hate

Editorial Board, The Daily Campus, February 24, 2022:

Recently, The Daily Campus reported on an incident that occurred in early February, where turbahs — small pieces of molded clay many Shia Muslims use during prayer — that had been donated for students to use at the Islamic Center of the University of Connecticut and the wellness and meditation space in Homer Babbidge Library had been vandalized and thrown out.

This is not the first anti-Shia incident to occur at UConn; according to members of the Ahlul Bayt Student Association, an organization for Shia Muslims at UConn, anti-Shia rhetoric has occurred for years. ABSA claims that ICUC has not been a welcoming environment for Shia Muslim students, with ICUC keeping anti-Shia books inside the mosque, and requiring approval for the placement of worshipping items such as turbahs in the space of worship.

In response to the incident, the Muslim Student Association released a statement condemning the vandalism, claiming that the ICUC executive board had no connection to the attackers. The MSA claimed the e-Board lacked any knowledge that turbahs would be placed in the mosque and reiterated that the placement of any religious items in the mosque requires ICUC approval. While MSA claims ICUC apologized to ABSA for the incident and offered to pay for turbahs and discuss concerns, ABSA claims they could not schedule a meeting and that an apology from ICUC was neither direct nor official….

As suggested by ABSA in the article, given the anti-Shia Muslim hate and the divide between Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims, more events and educational opportunities should be made available to students to eliminate misconceptions regarding the Shia sect.

Furthermore, this incident occurred on Feb. 8 and the UConn administration has yet to publicly condemn and oppose this hate. The UConn administration should address this incident, make it clear that such hate is unwelcome at the university and spare no resources investigating those responsible….

Company Contrast: Texas Roadhouse

Each week 2ndVote takes a look at popular companies that either score well or score poorly  and then try to provide alternatives that either better align with the 2ndVote values or should be avoided to the best of your ability. This series is called The Company Contrast, and the company we will be focusing on this week is Texas Roadhouse (3.24).

Texas Roadhouse is an American restaurant chain that specializes in all American cuisine such as steak, ribs, and fresh baked rolls. The company was started by Kent Taylor in 1993 with the original location in Clarksville, Indiana. Texas Roadhouse scores well with 2ndVote and receives a 3.24 due to their support of Veterans and good environmental initiatives. They offer free meals to all veterans and active military on Veterans Day and have held a 17 year partnership with Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) which builds mortgage free homes for injured veterans. Beyond supporting veterans, they also practice good environmental stewardship policies in their day to day operations and donate $50,000 every year to the Arbor Day foundation. Overall, Texas Roadhouse gets the 2ndVote stamp of approval.

Honorable mentions go out to Logan’s Roadhouse and Ruth’s Hospitality Group (Ruth’s Chris Steak House) due to their neutral scores of 3.00. It’s never a bad thing when the steak tastes like steak and not dirty politics!

On the other side of the ranch there’s Longhorn Steakhouse (1.36). Longhorn Steakhouse is a restaurant chain specializing in steaks and American cuisine. The steakhouse started its first location in 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia, and now has over 500 locations across the United States. Longhorn scores poorly in four out of the six categories with 2ndVote: Life, Basic Freedoms, Civil Safe Society, and environment. These scores are the result of contributions or partnerships that indirectly fund Planned Parenthood, oppose religious liberties, advocate for sanctuary cities, and support carbon taxes. After it’s all tallied up, we think their steaks are a bit too liberal for our taste.

Why Frackers Are Returning to Abandoned Oil Patches in Droves

For consumers, high oil prices are a headache; for drillers, they are an opportunity.


Less than two years after the price of oil briefly plummeted to roughly negative $37 a barrel, an oil boom is underway in America—even in places where drilling was all but abandoned two years ago.

“Private oil producers are leading an industry return to places like the Anadarko Basin of Oklahoma and the DJ Basin in Colorado, where drilling had almost completely stopped in mid-2020,” reports The Wall Street Journal.

The Anadarko Basin, for example, has surged from just seven active drilling rigs to 46, according to energy analytics firm Enverus, while the DJ Basin in Colorado saw its number of active rigs jump from four to 15. Meanwhile, Utah’s Uinta Basin and the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, which both saw active rigs fall to zero in 2020, have seen rigs increase to roughly a dozen.

What is driving frackers back to abandoned oil patches? It’s not newly discovered shale oil. Rather, it’s high oil prices.

The price of oil has surged in recent months, increasing from roughly $65 a barrel to the low-to-mid $90s in recent weeks. (The price of crude closed at just under $94 a barrel Monday.) The prices—which recently hit a seven-year high—are attracting drillers to shale patches that are more expensive to drill and thus require higher prices to be profitable.

For consumers, high oil prices can be a headache, because they result in higher gasoline prices. But for drillers, high oil prices mean more potential for profit.

Klee Watchous, president of the Kansas-based company Palomino Petroleum, says the higher prices have marked a turnaround for his small company and the surrounding communities where it operates.

“After many years of fighting this low oil-price situation, it feels great,” Watchous told the WSJ. “The cycles of boom and bust have been part of the oil-and-gas industry for decades, and no one knows how long it will last.”

Watchous is looking to seize on the higher prices to venture into Illinois in 2022, a state few companies have sought to tap in recent years.

Some might begrudge oil companies like Palomino profiting from high oil prices, but it’s precisely their desire for profits that can help tame surging oil prices. As oil companies expand their production, they increase the supply of oil, which inevitably puts a downward pressure on prices. It’s a perfect example of Adam Smith’s insight that free markets harness the self-interest of individuals to serve the whole.

“Every individual… neither intends to promote the public interest, nor knows how much he is promoting it… he intends only his own security,” Smith explained in The Theory of Moral Sentiments; “and by directing that industry in such a manner as its produce may be of the greatest value, he intends only his own gain, and he is in this, as in many other cases, led by an invisible hand to promote an end which was no part of his intention.”

High prices do two important things in an economy. First, they encourage people to conserve scarce resources. Many people love steak and lobster, but few of us eat it every week or every month because it’s quite expensive. In other words, the high price discourages us from demanding steak and lobster. But that’s not the only function of the high price. It also encourages lobster trappers and beef companies to bring more of these products to market in pursuit of profit. Together, these two mechanisms help make scarce resources more abundant.

Price is arguably the simplest and most vital principle in economics. It signals both scarcity (to consumers) and opportunity (to entrepreneurs). Yet the economist Thomas Sowell has noted the importance of prices is often misunderstood by activists and politicians.

“Prices play a crucial role in determining how much of each resource gets used where and how the resulting products get transferred to millions of people,” Sowell wrote in Basic Economics. “Yet this role is seldom understood by the public and it is often disregarded entirely by politicians.”

It’s worth noting that the word “price” never appeared in President Joe Biden’s 2020 executive order killing the Keystone XL Pipeline, an oil pipeline system between Canada and the US commissioned in 2010.

Nixing the 1,700-mile pipeline, which could have carried roughly 800k barrels of oil a day from Alberta to the Texas Gulf Coast, did nothing to reduce the pain at the pump consumers are feeling today, with gasoline currently at more than $3.50 a gallon. But that was expected.

What perhaps was unexpected was that higher prices would result in additional fracking—a process many contend is harder on the environment than regular drilling, and a practice Biden has said he wants to “move gradually away from.”

So while the role prices play in an economy is one of the most basic lessons in economics, politicians of every stripe would do well to remember one of the greatest fallacies: overlooking secondary consequences.
