TAKE ACTION: The U.S. House Voted to Redefine Marriage — Senators Threatening to Follow Suit!

On Tuesday the House passed a bill to codify the redefinition of marriage in law. Senate Majority Leader Schumer is threatening to take it up in the Senate, and many Republicans are wavering.

Every House Democrat, and forty-seven House Republicans, just voted to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which was approved in 1996 by overwhelming bipartisan majorities in both chambers of Congress (342-67 in the House, 85-14 in the Senate) and signed into law by President Clinton.

The so-called Respect for Marriage Act would also codify the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) to legalize same-sex marriage. Such a clear statement by Congress in favor of same-sex marriage would not only legislatively cement a harmful, anti-family policy, but would unleash further religious freedom violations and threaten the tax-exempt status of religious entities.

Even before Obergefell, examples of government coercion and prosecution of those with sincerely held beliefs regarding marriage were already numerous and growing. They include:

  • Barronelle Stutzman, the Washington state florist who was sued by the state and would eventually be forced to sell her business in order to avoid government confiscation of all of her personal assets, simply because she could not make custom floral arrangements for her long-time customer’s same-sex wedding.
  • Aaron and Melissa Klein, the owners of Sweetcakes by Melissa, who were sued by the state and fined $135,000 for declining to bake a custom cake for a same-sex wedding.
  • Jack Phillips, the Colorado baker who has been to the U.S. Supreme Court twice to defend his First Amendment right not to make expressive cakes celebrating same-sex marriages. He is now being sued a third time by the state because he cannot create a gender transition cake in good conscience.
  • Dick and Betty Odgaard, whom the Iowa Civil Rights Commission tried to force to rent their gallery space (a former church) to a same-sex couple for their wedding ceremony. As a part of a settlement agreement to end the litigation, Dick and Betty agreed to pay the couple thousands of dollars and to not host any more weddings.
  • Cynthia and Robert Gifford, who were fined $13,000 and ordered to implement staff re-education training classes that contradicted the couple’s beliefs on marriage. The couple had been willing to make their farm available for a same-sex wedding reception but not the ceremony itself.
  • A Methodist congregation that ceased making a pavilion located on church-owned property available for weddings after the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights held that the church was required to host same-sex weddings.
  • Atlanta fire chief Kelvin Cochran, who was suspended and ultimately fired from his job for authoring and giving away, on his own time, a devotional book that touched on the biblical model of marriage being one man and one woman.
  • Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who declined to sign the marriage license (as then required by state law) for a same-sex couple. She was willing for her staff to sign the form, but that accommodation was not allowed by state law at the time. Writing about her case, Justice Clarence Thomas said, “those with sincerely held religious beliefs concerning marriage will find it increasingly difficult to participate in society without running afoul” of Obergefell “and its effect on other antidiscrimination laws.”
  • The (reportedly dozens) of magistrates in North Carolina that the attorney general forced to resign in 2014 for refusing to perform same-sex marriages. One finally won her case in 2018 for $300,000.
  • The judge in Washington state who was admonished by the state bar for daring to express his preference not to perform same-sex marriages.
  • The (Dis)Respect for Marriage Act increases the threat of legal liability of those who decline to affirm same-sex marriage.

In Bob Jones University v. United States, the Supreme Court looked to whether a school’s actions were contrary to a “fundamental national public policy” to determine whether tax exemption can be denied to that school. If this bill becomes law, the executive branch could argue that same-sex marriage is a “fundamental national public policy” to justify denial of tax-exempt status of schools and other entities that decline to affirm same-sex marriage.

Natural marriage is part of the very fabric of a free society. It is a pre-political institution that has existed for millennia. Nothing has changed; it is still in children’s best interest to be raised in homes with a married mother and father. Our nation’s laws should be shaped by what is best for society as a whole and especially for children. The 2015 Supreme Court ruling to try to redefine marriage was both procedurally and substantively wrong. Some homes are fatherless or motherless, and we salute the hard work of single mothers, single fathers, and blended and adoptive families who heroically serve their children. But the law should never be manipulated, by the courts or by Congress, to sanction intentionally fatherless and motherless family structures. It was wrong of the Supreme Court to overrule over thirty states that recognized natural marriage in 2015, and it is wrong for Congress to attempt to legislate the redefinition of marriage now.

Every American deserves respect and dignity, because each of us is created in the image of God. Respecting and acknowledging natural marriage, the biological complementarity of men and women, and the noted benefits of natural marriage to society as a whole and to children in particular do not undermine anyone’s God-given human dignity.

The (Dis)Respect for Marriage Act denies these realities by repealing the Defense of Marriage Act (which recognized natural marriage in federal law) and forcing every state to accept the definition of marriage of other states, pushing a “lowest common denominator” on all of the states. For example, should any state legislature or court choose to recognize polyamorous marriage, every state would be effectively forced to accept that new standard, without regard for the well-being of children and families.

On July 21, 2022, the White House announced that the twice vaccinated and twice boosted Joe Biden has the coronavirus.

On July 21, 2021, Joe Biden told the country that the vaccinated could not get the coronavirus.

But again, one last thing.  I — we don’t talk enough to you about this, I don’t think.  One last thing that’s really important is: We’re not in a position where we think that any virus — including the Delta virus, which is much more transmissible and more deadly in terms of non — unvaccinated people — the vi- — the various shots that people are getting now cover that.  They’re — you’re okay.  You’re not going to — you’re not going to get COVID if you have these vaccinations. [emphasis added]

Naturally, the CNNLOL moderator, Don Lemon, did not challenge or correct Biden.

Netflix Sheds Nearly 1 Million Subscribers in Historic Loss

Wall Street Journal:

Netflix Inc. suffered two consecutive quarters of subscriber losses for the first time in its history, and said some key steps it is taking to boost revenue and subscriber growth wouldn’t happen until next year. The company lost 970,000 paid subscribers in the June quarter, fewer than the 2 million it had expected to lose. Netflix estimated it would add 1 million net new subscribers in the current quarter. Netflix shares were up 7.4% in after-hours trading. The stock has had a rough 2022, losing about two-thirds of its value since the start of the year. The company is contending with growing competition from rival streaming services, a saturated U.S. market and rising inflation that observers say could crimp spending on entertainment. To boost subscriptions and revenue growth, Netflix is working on launching a lower-price, ad-supported option for consumers, and it plans to crack down on password-sharing by charging households to share accounts (Wall Street Journal).

NBC:

The streaming space is highly competitive, and is likely to remain so as HBO Max, one of Netflix’s close rivals, is set to partner with Discovery+ to add its content library at $14.99 a month with no ads. Meanwhile, Disney has kept its Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ bundle at $13.99 a month. In the shadow of Netflix’s historic loss of subscribers last quarter, HBO and the cable channel’s HBO Max streaming service added 3 million new users (NBC).

HHS Pays $40k to Study Why Kids ‘Favor Whiteness and Maleness Over Other Identities.’

In yet another racial equity venture funded by American taxpayers, a private university is getting tens of thousands of dollars from the U.S. government to study the “developmental trajectory of children’s beliefs that white males—more so than black males, white females, or black females—best exemplify a person.” The three-year research project, to be conducted by academics at New York University (NYU), seeks to uncover why kids “favor Whiteness and maleness over other identities,” according to the grant announcement issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the agency doling out the cash for the study.

The project is part of a broader HHS Equity Action Plan designed to transform how the agency does business in order “to concretely advance equity.” Under the overhaul a Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index was launched to help identify racial and ethnic communities at the greatest risk for disproportionate impact and adverse outcomes due to COVID-19 and a Racial Equity in Postpartum Care Challenge was created to reduce disparities and improve outcomes for postpartum “Black or African American” women enrolled in Medicaid, the government’s insurance program for the poor. HHS has also doled out millions of dollars to “minority-serving institutions” charged with strengthening COVID-19 vaccine confidence among racial and ethnic minority groups as well as underserved communities.

In the agency’s latest racial equity endeavor, researchers at NYU will receive more than $40,000 to study “societal assumptions regarding typical personhood and their effects on reasoning development.” The HHS grant announcement further specifies that the goal is to “uncover the development processes by which children acquire the belief that white males represent the default person—a pattern rooted in ideologies of androcentrism (centering the experiences of men) and ethnocentricism (centering the experiences of white people) prevalent in the United States.” The document goes on to state that “despite national rises in racial and gender diversity, white men remain vastly overrepresented across a host of domains within the U.S., from media, to politics, to clinical research.” That overrepresentation poses severe costs to the rest of society, the nation’s health agency writes, identifying the victims as “women of all races, men of color, and gender-nonconforming individuals.”

The Biden administration is particularly concerned with embedded disparities in health, where clinical trials have historically prioritized the experiences, perspectives, and health outcomes of white men. “To address this issue, we must understand when and how the tendency to view white males as default people develops across childhood, as well as the environmental factors that underlie this phenomenon,” the HHS grant document states. Specifically, the government wants to know the developmental trajectory by which children’s default representations of people begin to favor whiteness and maleness over other identities, the domains across which children activate a white male default to guide social reasoning, and the sociocultural and ecological factors that can prevent the development of those beliefs. “Young children actively construct knowledge to make sense of their social environments,” according to the grant document. “As part of this process, children absorb complex streams of information from the sources around them, including parents, peers, and broader societal institutions (e.g., media).” HHS proceeds to explain that the beliefs children acquire tend to reflect the dominant ideologies embedded in their specific cultural contexts. In the U.S., those ideologies include the previously mentioned “androcentrism and ethnocentrism.”

The taxpayer-funded researchers are expected to clarify the scope of children’s beliefs about who best exemplifies a person by testing the consistency of the belief across domains and uncovering the features of children’s sociocultural and ecological environments that underlie beliefs about who best exemplifies a person. “The diversity afforded by this platform allows us to capture a holistic picture of the phenomenon in question and the mechanisms underlying it, broadening both the empirical rigor and real-world impacts of our findings,” according to HHS. It will only cost American taxpayers $40,391, though the agency could obligate more funding at any time.

ABC News Falsely Portrays AOC, Ilhan Omar as Being Handcuffed

As viral video revealed on Tuesday, ABC News promoted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) propaganda when it shared photographs seeming to show her and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) being led away in handcuffs by police.

The two radical “Squad” members were filmed with wrists together behind their backs as if they were handcuffed while being escorted by police away from a pro-abortion protest at the Supreme Court. The charge was crowding, obstructing or incommoding, police said.

At one point, AOC temporarily forgot she was supposed to be cuffed, and raised a “fight the power” fist into the air. She then resumed her fakery.

ABC News neglected to mention that “no handcuffs were seen” until several paragraphs deep into its report.

Conservatives on Twitter slammed ABC News for the aiding and abetting the fake news. Sen. Ted Cruz advisor Steve Guest, for example, called out the purported news outlet, tweeting, “ABC can’t honestly use these photos. AOC and Ilhan Omar are PRETENDING to be handcuffed.”

But of course, ABC News isn’t honest, and neither are AOC or Ilhan Omar.

In a January 26, 2022 appearance on MSNBC’s The 11th Hour, Ocasio-Cortez praised 83-year-old leftwing Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer’s decision to retire while Democrats still held control of both the Senate and the White House: “[T]here’s no way of saying what’s actually in Justice Breyer’s mind. But I do believe that the urgency of this moment — the fact that the country is very clearly on a precipice of fascism and a return to Jim Crow, the sweeping attack on voting rights in this country and the very real threat of seeing what happened with the consequences of Ruth Bader Ginsburg passing during the Trump presidency — that we could very well risk something like that happening again. And if that was part of his calculation, I think he was correct in his conclusion.”

Marvel is at it again!

This company has been providing immoral role models for our boys for years.

However, now they have taken things to a new low by making a homosexual version of its iconic Spider-Man character. They just could not leave it alone.

The character, dubbed “Web-Weaver,” is set to debut in a comic being released in late September.

Although the comic itself is yet to come, a pre-released sketch of the character gives us an idea of where it is going.

The drawing shows a man clothed in a modified version of the original Spider-Man costume. The man stands in an effeminate position. In addition, the new costume features feminine eyelashes that further manifest the character’s immoral lifestyle.

Taking a principled, not personal stand.

This most recent attack specifically targets young boys growing up in an already-confusing world, making it that much worse.

Touching on this point, the comic script’s writer had this to say:

“Something I realized immediately when conceiving Web-Weaver is that he can’t—and shouldn’t—represent ALL gay men. No single character can. His fearlessly femme identity is central to who he is, but it’s not the story.” (Emphasis added)

This outrageous development is part of a movement to develop role models for ‘LGBT children.’

What that really means is that big companies are trying to confuse and ultimately pervert our youth.

I don’t know about other countries, but it is the time to remind you that we are at war waged by Socialists/Communists forces against Western civilization to implement Stalinist Soviet Socialism globally. America didn’t escape this war, but the American people are not aware of that war. They don’t know Vladimir Putin and the countries of “Axis of Evil” under the Russian umbrella. President Trump: “The FBI knew of the laptop, knew that Hunter received a $3.5 million wire transfer from the former mayor of Moscow’s wife.”  As usual the FBI was oversleeping everything related to Russia. While Russian and Chinese Intelligences are intertwined in their operations against Western civilization and capitalism. Since his moving to Moscow in 1990, Vladimir Putin has been arming Iran with not only arms, but with the cadres, like Qasem Soleimani killed by the order of the 45th President Trump. The international terrorist Soleimani was trained in Russia by the KGB together with a group of Iranians to the Qads Force. Under Putin’s supervision a huge quantity of the Russian military equipment went to Iran and the production of the tools for Russian has been established. Today, the FBI and CIA are surprised by Putin trip to Iran. What an ignorance!

I believe that Qasem Soleimani spoke Russian, the friendship with the KGB has lasted for years and the Socialist modus operandi have been taught to all Iranian cadres. When China Claims US is a “Threat to World Peace” please remember Socialist modus operandi: lies, deceit, and fraud. That is the quintessential nature of “disinformation” we had been experiencing for many decades, because we don’t know the KGB Mafia/Army. It is in the process today and the FBI Director has not a remotest idea of what is going on in America—he doesn’t know Russia. Don’t be surprised: this exact modus operandi has been used by Biden’s team to implement Socialism in America. National security of America is my major concern. That is the reason I am writing this column.

When 88% of Americans think that we are going on the wrong track and the President doesn’t change the policy, his cognitive ability to run the country is questionable. Somebody else is doing it by using his name. I think it is his staff with the KGB involvement. When Biden’s dismissing the ruling of the Supreme Court that plays a valuable part in the government, it is not the American interest. When the President disrespects the decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court, he undermines and challenges the entire American government, let alone dividing Americans.

In Biden’s administration 62% appointees have no business experiences. It shows that Biden prioritized another quality. I believe it was an ideological value. For example: the Father of Mayor Pete has been a lecturer of Marxism-Leninism in Russia before immigration to the U.S. He has prepared his son very well ideologically. Listen to the lectures of Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on ethics, religion, and promotion of “climate change.” By the way, the “climate change” policy is a corrupted copy of Stalin’s “we will conquer nature,” that bankrupted the USSR. Biden and Putin have been collaborating since 2014 and today have the same agenda to implement Stalinist Soviet Socialism in America!

Knowledge is Power!

Yes, knowledge is power and the Republican Party doesn’t have it. In one of my preceding columns, I gave you a list of main KGB Mafia/Army achievements in America. It is impossible to present all of them in one column. I have been doing that for over thirty years because our Intelligence community and the FBI still don’t know the enemy. Operation Afghanistan was designed by Vladimir Putin and executed by the KGB Mafia/Army from the White House, using Biden’s name. Considering Biden’s cognitive inability, he has no clue about the operation. Remember, he has an old staff since 2013-2014, the time when he collaborated with Putin in old, corrupt Ukraine. Do you remember his job on quid-pro-quo? Biden lost his memory, but his staff continued serving Socialist modus operandi by “disinformation.”  The entire Biden secret-team is a historic fraud on American soil under Putin’s supervision destroying Capitalism and implementing Stalinist Soviet Socialism in our country like in Sri Lanka.

The second event illustrating the Biden/Putin collaboration is the policy of open border: Biden’s team executes it and Putin’s KGB Mafia/Army organized and provided illegal nationals from 120 countries. All Caravans on our Southern border had been designed and organized by Putin’s KGB the same way they performed the “Muslim Invasion” to Europe in 2015. Read my columns explaining the details. The third event is unknown to our Intelligence community, the FBI, and to vast majority of Americans.

It is not the “Mexican Cartel” in Central America, but the “Russian Cartel” established by Stalinist KGB Mafia/Army in the 1950-1960s. Read my columns about Stalin’s participation in the Spanish Civil War and thousands of children who had been brought to Russia after the war. Under the KGB supervision they were trained for decades. Then the army of young Spanish speaking men and women had been sent to Central America and Mexico to implement the KGB/Military decision of 1955 to start the war against Western civilization with “narcotics strategy as a sub-component of this global strategy.”  The KGB mafia/Army likes money and you see it by watching our Southern border.

Democrats’ conversion to Socialism began many decades ago, when they had been very soft on the Soviet Union. Under Bill Clinton the massive infiltration of the KGB Mafia/Army to American soil has converted a lot of Democrats to Socialism, Soviet Stalinist Socialism. Finally, the Truman’s Party was converted to Socialist Party. The Biden administration has become an embodiment of the Democrats converted to the Socialist Party. Maybe even to more grave ism, but I’ll delay the discussion on Socialism and Fascism.

Socialism/Communism is an abusive, corrupt, and nefarious system against the citizens. Under Stalinist Soviet Socialism people had been deprived of all human rights, let alone personal liberty. The government treated us as the guinea pigs. I see the same predicament in the United States under the Biden administration in 2022. Recall a major Stalin’s postulate: never admit crime committed, instead accuse the opponent in that exact crime.  All accusations against Trump being in the Russian pocket had been a fraud to cover-up crime that had been committed by the Dems. The Democrat Bill Clinton was in the Russian pocket and Joe Biden is continuing that Dems’ tradition in 2022.

In the beginning of this column, I intentionally focused your attention on the assassination of a former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. It is a very complicated case and this is my personal opinion. Watching the Dems’ war against our Constitutional republic, I wasn’t surprised to hear the name of Rahm Emanuel as the U.S. ambassador to Japan. I know him as a member of the Clinton Mafia, a man who together with the Governor of Pennsylvania defrauded the Presidential election in 2012 for Barack Obama. I don’t like and don’t trust him. Knowing the Goodness of the late Shinzo Abe, I am very suspicious of his assassination. The case has a global implication, it is a sign of threat to humanity.

The current Uvalde report reveals: “Multiple Systemic Failures.” I had warned you about the law enforcement agencies twenty years ago. We don’t know the enemy and are not ready for the war. Please. Read the paragraph from my book:  p. 202 The Russian Factor: From Cold War to Global Terrorism XLIBRIS, 2006.

“Our Counterintelligence had not provided needed data—lack of information tied the hands of law enforcement agencies.  To prevent the next disaster, we must know the source of danger, its nature, and modus operandi.  We must know Soviet Fascism and its cadres—the Soviet Mafia.  Only through knowledge a proper judgment arrives–it stops the aggressor’s being a mystery. Only awareness of the enemy can prevent the next disaster!”

When Intelligence is Stupid

The smartest guy in the room is often not the most trustworthy or competent.

I’ve long engaged a group of close friends in political and theological discussion. As it happens, two of us agree on most topics and ally against the others. Mostly in banter, although not entirely so, we refer to ourselves as “Team Intelligence.” It’s friendly and jocular, even if somewhat ridiculous.

Who could be against intelligence? Who would wish to be dim-witted or slow; or worse, to be thought dim-witted and slow?

In his Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle describes intelligence or understanding (nous) as the intellectual virtue by which we apprehend first principles. Such principles are known, but as first, they cannot themselves be demonstrated or based on other more fundamental premises. The intellect grasps them as true by an insight that is neither an intuition nor a conclusion. Thus, all other theoretical reasoning depends on intelligence, which provides fundamental principles.

Nonetheless, it is obvious to any person of experience that intelligence is no guarantee of wisdom, morality, or even basic decency. The intelligent person may turn out worse than the dull precisely because he is clever and scheming. Just as one eventually concludes that interesting people are fine but solid and serious people make better friends, perhaps maturity requires moderating our admiration for the intellectuals, the clerks, and the clever types.

Stupidity’s varieties

Best known for his modernist classic, The Man Without Qualities, Robert Musil (1880–1942) gave a lecture in the anxious Vienna of 1937, “On Stupidity,” that is helpful here. The most “general notion of stupidity,” Musil suggests, is something like incapacity or inability. But at a time of “middle-class conventions,” the conception of stupidity is narrowed, confined to the domain of “mental work” and “rational achievements.” Stupidity is thus thought to describe “one who is ‘a little weak in the head.’” While a failure to understand may be the occasion of humor, Musil rightly notes there is nothing dishonorable in slowness. “Honorable stupidity is a little dull of comprehension, . . . is poor in ideas and words,” but also has “more than a little of life’s rosy cheeks” and is “charming.” Sam Gamgee comes to mind, or Bertie Wooster. They might need to count on their fingers, but there’s nothing dishonorable in doing so.

If honorable stupidity is a weakness of understanding, the dishonorable version “is by far the more dangerous.” It is not the absence of intelligence so much as “failure of intelligence.” Intelligence is present but out of balance and “misshapen and erratically active,” diseased in some manner. The “higher stupidity” is a “misculture” causing not dullness of mind but a kind of blindness or refusal to see.

Musil suggests three primary qualities of this kind of intelligent stupidity. First, it claims accomplishment and facility in matters beyond its competence. Second, it gives way to emotions at the expense of reason. Third, it is clever enough to invent rationalizations for its views, no matter how bizarre the view or silly the excuse. As a result, intelligence does not orient toward true knowledge of first principles and reality, as in Aristotle’s vision, but confuses the spirit. It results in a flight from reality, with all the cultural and spiritual pathologies attendant on living in an ersatz reality. Of course, given the unity of the human being, stupidity of this sort affects sensibility, causing taste and emotions to unmoor. Such intelligence becomes a dangerous disease of the mind and “endangers life itself.”

Culture of intelligence

Ours is certainly an age that privileges mental work, the creative class, the pundit, the intellectual, those of word and symbol; in short, ours is a culture of intelligence. The intelligent are valued, admitted, hired, promoted, and praised, and their product governs and directs us. But which sort of intelligence, honorable or dishonorable? Do our bright lights claim competence in what is clearly beyond the ability of policy and state? Are our best and most powerful governed by reason or emotions? Do our elites offer wild rationalizations for what is clearly bizarre? Do the most important institutions of our society harness and direct intelligence in service of reality or of misculture’s revolt?

Just now, the West comes across as dominated by enthusiasm. Our good institutions lack conviction, while the worst are frenzied with enthusiasm threatening our social order. The irrationality of our experts and their responses to COVID have wounded the education and well-being of our children, foisted a mental health crisis on us, fomented nihilistic violence, and destroyed wealth through inflation. An utterly destructive mania for human experimentation continues in the contagion of rapid onset gender dysphoria. We have no idea what puberty blockers will do long term, even as our cultural gatekeepers silence those asking the relevant questions. This is a plague of social disorder and chaos, much of it prompted by wild abstractions of the intelligent.

Roger Scruton suggested that many “grand liberal conceptions” about rights and freedoms are merely enthusiasms leaving “death and destruction in their wake.” For Scruton, conservative as he was, abstractions always have the whiff of higher stupidity about them, untethered from reality and invented as they are. Instead of cleverly constructed (and intelligent in their way) abstractions, Scruton suggested that “we rational beings need customs and institutions that are founded in something other than reason, if we are to use our reason to good effect.” This, he thought, is the “principal contribution that conservatism has made” to an understanding of human life, and an essential truth.

Seeking soundness

Given the confusion, the temptation among some on the right to respond to wrongheaded abstractions with abstract theories, projects, and grand schemes of their own is understandable. However, this mimics the “higher stupidity” responsible for fragmenting the institutions, structures, customs, and habits on which genuine reason depends, as Scruton has argued. Instead, we ought to value soundness far more than we do. We have become so accustomed to praising mental work, in Musil’s phrase, that we scout for smarts, recruiting and promoting and praising the bright kid while overlooking the solid youngster. Surely a person of good judgment, stolid character, and immovable rectitude is every bit as praiseworthy as the inventive and the quick—and in political and social life far more important.

The sound person is invariably a person of custom, of deference to the collected judgment of long experience, including experience of those long dead. They, after all, knew something and still exert judgment in the manners, mores, and habits of a people. The sound youngster possesses a sort of connatural knowledge of what is to be done, and so maintains stability, which is a basic condition for rational self-governance. Revolution and disruption—so cherished by the intelligent with their plans and projects—demand fluidity, liquidity, and suppleness, all skills of the highly intelligent, and all generally destructive of order and decent society. The disruptors of Silicon Valley flourish as San Francisco collapses, for example.

The sound person holds in trust the accomplishments of a civilization. It is no accident that Plato’s vision of education begins not with philosophy and the clever, but with formation of good judgment and taste. Eventually the philosopher ought to rule, he suggests, but the ruler emerges from those already educated in good judgment; that is, the ruler must first be considered sound, a sensible person, so he doesn’t succumb to the novel (but nonsensical) proposal that ruins social order and well-being. He maintains a high regard for the guards of civilizational inheritance, the not utterly brilliant teacher who knows he has been asked to bequeath a cherished tradition to his pupils rather than tear it apart.

For most, having their customary way of life “problematized” results not in insight and clarity but confusion and vertigo. Far too many young people have had the rug yanked out from under them by their intelligent teachers; unsurprisingly, the result is alienation, nihilism, anger, withdrawal, and helplessness. The “failure to launch” bedeviling so many, including fear of “adulting” and the rejection of growing up, marrying, and parenting, is worsened by the cleverest among us. We often rather lamely refer to this as the failure of the elites, but they have not failed so much as destroyed.

We’ve privileged intelligence far too much. Or, better, we’ve privileged an intelligence quite proper to the world of science—with its doubt and skepticism and experiment and theories—but that cannot understand the human things. Our attempts to force a perfectly good tool into another sphere have caused grave damage. Theoretical reason, so necessary and wonderful within its bounds, is worse than merely erroneous in social and political life. It becomes stupid, highly so. Consider the vicious abstractions harming so many of the most vulnerable and dependent among us—gender ideology and political utopianism, for just two examples.

Aristotle knew better. Different orders of reality require different orders of intellect proper to them, and what he terms the well-schooled man—the sound person—knows the difference. The practical wisdom of the sound person is intelligence of the proper sort, an intelligence about acting. The person educated in this way “knows first principles,” and, indeed, the sound person lives in accordance with “intelligence and right order,” in his phrasing.

Soundness is intelligence apprehending the principles governing action. Such principles are universal, governing all human acts. But they are not theoretical, and it is not the clever but the good who most easily apprehend them.

We have great need for sound men and women, and until we value and praise them as we esteem the clever, and until the sound govern and give law to the clever, we will experience no end of our troubles.

Reagan’s Goal to End the Department of Education Is Finally Gaining Momentum

Ending the Department of Education may seem like a radical idea, but it’s not as crazy as it sounds.

The debate over the federal role in education has been going on for decades. Some say the feds should have a relatively large role while others say it should be relatively small. But while most people believe there should be at least some federal oversight, some believe there should be none at all.

Rep. Thomas Massie is one of those who believes there should be no federal involvement in education, and he is actively working to make that a reality. In February 2021, he introduced H.R. 899, a bill that perfectly encapsulates his views on this issue. It consists of one sentence:

“This bill terminates the Department of Education on December 31, 2022.”

This position may seem radical, but Massie is not alone. The bill had 8 cosponsors when it was introduced and has been gaining support ever since. On Monday, Massie announced that Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) decided to cosponsor the bill, bringing the total number of cosponsors to 18.

Though it may be tempting to think Massie and his supporters just don’t care about education, this is certainly not the case. If anything, they are pushing to end the federal Department of Education precisely because they care about educational outcomes. In their view, the Department is at best not helping and, at worst, may actually be part of the problem.

“Unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. should not be in charge of our children’s intellectual and moral development,” said Massie when he initially introduced the bill. “States and local communities are best positioned to shape curricula that meet the needs of their students.”

Massie is echoing sentiments expressed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, who advocated dismantling the Department of Education even though it had just begun operating in 1980.

“By eliminating the Department of Education less than 2 years after it was created,” said Reagan, “we cannot only reduce the budget but ensure that local needs and preferences, rather than the wishes of Washington, determine the education of our children.”

Before we rush into a decision like this, however, it’s important to consider the consequences. As G. K. Chesterton famously said, “don’t ever take a fence down until you know the reason it was put up.”

So, why was the federal Department of Education set up in the first place? What do they do with their $68 billion budget? Well, when it was initially established it was given 4 main roles, and these are the same roles it fulfills to this day. They are:

  • Establishing policies on federal financial aid for education, and distributing as well as monitoring those funds (which comprise roughly 8 percent of elementary and secondary education spending).
  • Collecting data on America’s schools and disseminating research.
  • Focusing national attention on key educational issues.
  • Prohibiting discrimination and ensuring equal access to education.

Now, some of these functions arguably shouldn’t exist at all. For instance, if you are opposed to federal funding or federal interference in education on principle, then there is no need for the first and fourth roles. As for the middle two roles, it’s clear that we need people collecting data, disseminating research, and pointing out educational issues. But the question here is not whether these initiatives should exist. The question is whether the federal government should pursue them.

On that question, there’s a good case to be made that leaving these tasks to the state and local level is far more appropriate. Education needs vary from student to student, so educational decisions need to be made as close to the individual student as possible. Federal organizations simply can’t account for the diverse array of educational contexts, which means their one-size-fits-all findings and recommendations will be poorly suited for many classrooms.

Teachers don’t need national administrators telling them how to do their job. They need the freedom and flexibility to tailor their approach to meet the needs of students. It is the local teachers, schools, and districts that know their students’ needs best, which is why they are best positioned to gather data, assess their options, and make decisions about how to meet those needs. Imposing top-down national ideas only gets in the way of these adaptive, customized, local processes.

The federal Department of Education has lofty goals when it comes to student success, but it is simply not the right institution for achieving them. If we really want to improve education, it’s going to require a bottom-up, decentralized approach. So rather than continuing to fund yet another federal bureaucracy, perhaps it’s time to let taxpayers keep their money, and let educators and parents pursue a better avenue for change.

Are We Living Under a Kakistocracy: Government by the Worst?

In 1787, as Benjamin Franklin left the final session of the Constitutional Convention, he was asked what form of government the delegates had given America. “A Republic,” he answered, “if you can keep it.”

Spoiler alert: we didn’t.

In 1963, Leonard Read warned Americans that “our once-upon-a-time Republic” was degenerating into something else; “we are headed into a kakistocracy,” he wrote.

Kakistocracy means “government by the worst.” Read particularly liked James Russell Lowell’s definition: “a government… for the benefit of knaves at the cost of fools.”

Looking at the state of America today, we seem to be subject to the kakistocracy Read foresaw.

Those holding the highest offices tend to be venal, abusive, and incompetent in their official conduct, and are frequently revealed to be dissolute—sometimes heinous—in their personal lives.

And the masses who foolishly elevated such people to power have paid dearly for it in lost liberty and tumbling living standards.

So a government “for the benefit of knaves at the cost of fools” seems like an apt description for the state of the nation, as well as the world.

This is an intolerable situation, to be sure. And it is entirely justified to deeply resent the depredations of the kakistocrats lording it over us.

However, we should be mindful of that resentment, lest it lead us down dark paths. Although Leonard Read warned us of a “a political situation founded on knavery and foolish­ness,” he also cautioned:

“Let us never refer to any individual as a knave or fool. This is inferiority showing through in ourselves. Everyone errs, more or less. Hang labels only on notions which appear to be knavish or foolish.”

In other words, think of the struggle as against bad ideas and values more so than bad people.

Such a practice may seem overly gracious toward our persecutors, but it’s more for our own sake than for theirs.

When we demonize our political adversaries and define our struggle as against bad people rather than bad ideas and values, we become susceptible to the temptation to ourselves embrace bad ideas and values if doing so would aid our war against the “enemy class.” The more we think of others as nothing but knaves and fools, the more prone we will be to indulge in knavish and foolish behavior ourselves.

We may, for example, be tempted to endorse unjust government policies that we hope will harm our ideological enemies: to attack liberty in the name of defending it. The more we do that, the more we become what we hate.

“The line separating good and evil,” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote, “passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart… even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains… an uprooted small corner of evil.”

First and foremost, we must guard against kakistocracy within ourselves as individuals; against letting ourselves be governed by our own worst impulses; against the tyranny of the knave and the fool that each of us harbors, more or less.

As Read argued, the only way to overthrow one kakistocracy without merely replacing it with another is a “rebirth of a natural aristocracy,” a notion he adopted from Thomas Jefferson. By this, he did not mean a ruling class enjoying government privilege, but individuals of virtue and talent who lead by example.

“When a society,” Read wrote, “is graced with a first-rate aristocracy—men of virtues and talents serving as exemplary models—foolish and knavish notions are held in abeyance. Why? People fear appearing as fools or knaves before those held in high esteem.”

This is why Read preached that the struggle for liberty was primarily a struggle for self-improvement that must be waged by each individual lover of liberty: especially “learning to understand and explain why freedom works.”

“When and to what extent will you or I strive for this required exemplarity—becoming an aristocrat?” Read asked. “This, and this alone, is all any person can do toward ridding the world of kakistocracy.”

Liberty is under siege—so are our livelihoods, and in some cases our very lives. Under such dire circumstances, it can be easy to develop a siege mentality. Sometimes in the fog of political war, even defenders of liberty can lose sight of what we are fighting for in the first place. But focusing on principles over personalities will help us keep our eye on the ball and keep us advancing toward a victory actually worth having.

Did you read in the news about the three mosques in the U.S. that were set on fire just the other weekend?

Did you hear in the mainstream media about the scores of attacks, including some firebombings, of the Planned Parenthood facilities by pro-life extremists?

Did you hear about the harassment of the pro-abortion politicians and judges for their pro-choice stance?

You didn’t? Neither did I, because none of those things happened. But the mainstream media has for the most part ignored the multiple churches and pro-life facilities that have been attacked in one way or another by pro-abortion forces in the last several weeks. Indeed, if they had been mosques or abortion providers, we would hear over and over about all this.

To add insult to injury, the loving services that the crisis pregnancy centers provide is being woefully distorted by many, including Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Senator Warren said last week: “In Massachusetts right now, those crisis pregnancy centers that are there to fool people who are looking for pregnancy termination help outnumber true abortion clinics by three to one. We need to shut them down here in Massachusetts, and we need to shut them down all around the country. You should not be able to torture a pregnant person like that.”

Pregnancy centers “torture” women? How blind can these people be? The crisis pregnancy centers, now in the cross hairs of the left, provide loving alternatives to abortion.

Through no help of the government, they provide millions of dollars of services—at no charge to the mothers they serve.

Micaiah Bilger of lifenews.com reports that “$266 million of free medical services and resources” are provided per year by these pregnancy centers.

The attack against pro-life churches and facilities was highlighted in the Capitol recently by Congressman Jim Jordan who read a litany of the dozens of attacks since the May 2 leak of the draft of the Dobbs decision. Yet a majority in the House of Representatives just voted against a measure to condemn these attacks.

Recently I spoke on a radio segment with Jim Harden, the president of Compass Care, a ministry that helps women with crisis pregnancies. Their center in Buffalo (technically, Amherst), New York, was firebombed on June 7th, and he told me that the perpetrators were “the pro-abortion terrorist group known as Jane’s Revenge. They’ve taken responsibility for scores of attacks on pro-life organizations since the leak of the Dobbs case.”

I asked Harden, isn’t it illegal to firebomb any building—say a candy factory, much less a charity providing loving services to those in need (although the left doesn’t view it as charity)? He answered, “An arson attack is just below murder in the criminal justice system because it carries too much potential damage and threat to life.”

He told our listeners that so far there have been no leads from the police or the FBI as to suspects. He said that friends in nearby offices were able to provide office space so that Compass Care could continue to serve the mothers in need. They did not miss a day serving, despite the firebombing.

In a follow-up call this week, he told me there have now been, all over the nation, “over 100 attacks where prolife people gather, with no arrests to date.”

His organization is dedicated to rebuilding the facility, which had to be gutted, costing $300,000-$400,000.

Crisis pregnancy centers are doing the Lord’s work, but today it is “open season” on them, thanks in part to the Marxist organization, “Jane’s Revenge.”

Meanwhile, there has been an on-going harassment against pro-life justices of the Supreme Court. These were illegal acts when the pro-death party was trying to intimidate them to change their opinion.

Now the left is even going after pro-life individuals at home.

Writer Alicia Powe notes, “An attorney who founded the Thomas More Society, a conservative Catholic law firm, was attacked as abortion activists threw smoke bombs and firecrackers at his house following the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade. The insurgents surrounded the home of pro-life lawyer Thomas Brejcha, in Evanston, Illinois.”

I’ve interviewed Tom Brejcha through the years. He once said of the pro-life cause in general: “This is a spiritual battle. This is not just a legal battle. And prayer is the ultimate resource. We need divine intervention…This is God’s work to protect the dignity and value of every human being.”

Is this the America the left is bringing to us, where the full force of government is on the side of death? This is indeed a spiritual battle. Our founders said that our first right granted by the Creator is the “right to life.”

But the left seems more committed to death than life.

America’s Insanely Two-Tiered Justice System Perfectly Encapsulated in Sentencing of Antifa Arsonist

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A Black Lives Matter rioter gets off with a light sentence after doing something objectively worse than just about everyone who walked into the Capitol Building on January 6th.

This latest example may take the cake, though. Ayoub Tabri traveled from Alexandria, VA, to Philidelphia, PA, in 2020, torching a police car during the Black Lives Matter riots that occurred. That’s where a blatant example of America’s two-tiered justice system begins.

First, the government struck a sweetheart deal with Tabri, as they have with past Antifa arsonists (including the two lawyers who threw Molotov cocktails at cops), ensuring that he wouldn’t have to serve the mandatory seven-year minimum sentence. Already, that’d showed the DOJ was willing to work with violent BLM protesters in ways they refuse to work with even non-violent January 6th protesters, many of whom entered the Capitol out of confusion.

Prosecutors then requested an intermediate sentence of 37-46 months. Yet, Tabri didn’t even get that. Instead, the judge handling the case gave him just 364 days, amounting to less than a year for torching a police car during a riot. Meanwhile, grandmas who took selfies on January 6th believing they were allowed to be in the Capitol got more than that in solitary confinement.

But trust me, it gets worse when you find out the reason why that extremely lenient sentence was given. The following tweets have the official documents posted, but for more sourcing, see this piece from The Philadelphia Inquirer.

You see, Tabri holds a green card via the government’s lottery system, which is an insane idea in its own right. Why would the United States be giving out legal entry permits to people from foreign nations based on pulling names out of a hat? That seems rather dangerous and unfair.

But I digress, the defense argued that giving Tabri over 364 days would result in the revocation of his green card and lead to his deportation. To which any normal response would be “so what?” The judge agreed with the reasoning, though, sentencing Tabri in a way that would ensure it wouldn’t qualify as an aggravated felony under federal law and making sure he could remain in the country.

In other words, a violent arsonist who torched a police car during the BLM riots received an incredibly lenient sentence specifically because of his immigration status. Being an American citizen now denotes fewer rights than being a felonious immigrant. If that’s not a perfect encapsulation of the two-tiered justice system, then nothing is.

The Republican National Committee dropped a damning montage Monday, showcasing some of President Joe Biden’s worst verbal miscues during his presidency so far.

The RNC Research Twitter account posted the one and a half-minute clip Monday morning, showing just a handful of times Biden stammered, stuttered, or simply stopped talking during a speech or while answering questions from the press. The montage comes as Biden comes under increasing scrutiny for his routine gaffes during public events.
