NYC: Lawyers to Be Arraigned Today on Federal Charges after Attack on Police

One of the lawyers charged with hurling Molotov cocktails at a police cruiser is a 32-year-old Princeton educated lawyer and his partner in (alleged) crime is a 31-year-old “human rights” lawyer and activist who worked on refugee issues in Turkey.

Here is a bit of the news from the NY Post:

Accused Molotov cocktail hurler is Ivy League-educated lawyer, community board member

A Ivy League-educated lawyer and member of a Brooklyn community board was among those arrested for hurling a Molotov cocktail at a marked NYPD vehicle amid George Floyd protests, it was revealed Sunday.

Colinford Mattis, 32, was allegedly behind the wheel of a tan minivan as his passenger, fellow attorney Urooj Rahman, allegedly hurled the incendiary at an empty NYPD vehicle outside the 88th Precinct station house in Fort Greene early on Saturday.

Mattis, a graduate of Princeton University and New York University law school, is an associate at corporate Manhattan firm Pryor Cashman.

[….]

Rahman, 31, meanwhile, is also registered as an attorney in New York state, who was admitted to the bar in June 2019 after graduating from Fordham University School of Law. It was not immediately clear on Sunday whether she was affiliated with any law firm.

It’s unclear how she and Mattis know each other.

The Brooklyn residents are federally charged with causing damage by fire and explosives to a police vehicle, during demonstrations over the death of George Floyd.

Thanks to a reader for a tip! I bet there is so much more to be learned about this pair.

Fordham Law School has this glowing write-up for new American Ms. Rahman:

Urooj Rahman ’15 worked with the Refugee Solidarity Network (RSN) and Refugee Rights Turkey (RTT), which, through their legal work, assist and empower refugees fleeing Turkey. Urooj provided direct services to asylum-seekers at the Center for Refugee Rights in Istanbul. As a foreign lawyer in Turkey, she lent her legal assistance mostly to non-Syrians going through the UNHCR refugee status determination procedure. She also served several months in New York with RSN, using her direct service experience to inform her contribution to international advocacy and awareness-raising initiatives.

I’ll try to come back to this story, but after being away, and then due to a storm losing internet service for days, I’ve got a lot of catching up to do!

VIDEO: ‘A Year’s Worth of Suicide Attempts in Four Weeks’ — The Unintended Consequences of COVID-19 Lockdowns

Stay-at-home orders come with a host of unintended consequences that we have not yet even begun to measure or understand.

he costs of the government responses to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic have been severe. New evidence suggests they could be even worse than we imagined.

An ABC affiliate in California reports that doctors at John Muir Medical Center tell them they have seen more deaths by suicide than COVID-19 during the quarantine.

“The numbers are unprecedented,” said Dr. Michael deBoisblanc, referring to the spike in suicides.

“We’ve never seen numbers like this, in such a short period of time,” deBoisblanc added. “I mean we’ve seen a year’s worth of suicide attempts in the last four weeks.”

Kacey Hansen, a trauma nurse who has spent 33 years at the hospital, said she has never witnessed self-inflicted attacks on such a scale.

“What I have seen recently, I have never seen before,” Hansen said. “I have never seen so much intentional injury.”

To date, there is little evidence that lockdowns have reduced the spread of COVID-19. But even if there were compelling evidence that lockdowns were saving lives, it would be a mistake to ignore the manifold unintended consequences of stay-at-home orders.

As economist Antony Davies and political scientist James Harrigan explain, “every human action has both intended and unintended consequences. Human beings react to every rule, regulation, and order governments impose, and their reactions result in outcomes that can be quite different than the outcomes lawmakers intended.”

The problem with negative unintended consequences is two-fold.

First, as Ludwig von Mises, observed, every government intervention in markets creates unintended consequences, which often lead to more calls for government interventions which have more unintended consequences, and so on. Second, as Frédéric Bastiat pointed out, we tend to focus our attention more on the intended consequences than the unintended ones. (Think of government assistance and the poverty trap.)

The unintended consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have been severe. Most of the attention, however, has been focused on the economic consequences. Forty million US jobs lost. A looming recession. Hundreds of thousands of businesses wiped out and retirements destroyed.

The psychological and physiological unintended consequences of stay-at-home orders have received less attention. Media have been largely transfixed on COVID-19, reporting daily death tolls and rising case numbers in states easing lockdown restrictions (while failing to note that COVID cases are rising because of expanded testing).

To be sure, measuring the impact on mental health is trickier than measuring COVID-19 fatalities or job losses. But that is no reason to discount the psychological and physical impact of lockdowns, especially when evidence suggests the toll is severe.

A recent Wall Street Journal report shows a surge in the number of people taking drugs for anxiety and insomnia, prompting physicians to warn about the long-term risks of increased prescriptions, which include drug addiction and abuse.

Stay-at-home orders may seem relatively benign, but they are not. Science shows that human beings struggle mightily in isolation from one another.

As The New York Times reported in 2016, social isolation isn’t just harmful, it’s quite deadly:

A wave of new research suggests social separation is bad for us. Individuals with less social connection have disrupted sleep patterns, altered immune systems, more inflammation and higher levels of stress hormonesOne recent study found that isolation increases the risk of heart disease by 29 percent and stroke by 32 percent.

Another analysis that pooled data from 70 studies and 3.4 million people found that socially isolated individuals had a 30 percent higher risk of dying in the next seven years, and that this effect was largest in middle age.

Loneliness can accelerate cognitive decline in older adults, and isolated individuals are twice as likely to die prematurely as those with more robust social interactions. These effects start early: Socially isolated children have significantly poorer health 20 years later, even after controlling for other factors. All told, loneliness is as important a risk factor for early death as obesity and smoking.

Anecdotal evidence, like the testimony of doctors at John Muir Medical Center and reported surges in calls to suicide hotlines around the country, suggest the mental toll of lockdowns could be as great as the material costs. (Indeed, they likely go hand-in-hand.)

We’ll have months if not years to debate whether the lockdowns were effective or the right thing to do. What’s important to remember is the stay-at-home orders come with a host of unintended consequences that we have not yet even begun to measure or understand.

For his part, Dr. DeBoisblanc has seen enough to convince him that it’s time to lift stay-at-home orders and let people return to their communities.

“Personally, I think it’s time,” he said. “I think, originally, this was put in place to flatten the curve and to make sure hospitals have the resources to take care of COVID patients. We have the current resources to do that, and our other community health is suffering.”

FLORIDA: Muslim researched targets for jihad massacre, including at Honeymoon Island

Here yet again authorities are not asking and will not ask what may be the most important questions: where did Muhammed Momtaz Al-Azhari learn his understanding of Islam? What mosque did he attend in the Tampa area? Has that mosque been investigated? Why not? What if it is teaching jihad

“Tampa Man Faces Terrorism Charges In Honeymoon Island Plot, Authorities Say,” by Julio Ochoa, WUSF News, May 27, 2020 (thanks to the Geller Report):

A 23-year-old Tampa Man has been charged with attempting to support ISIS by carrying out terrorists attacks in Florida, including one at Honeymoon Island, according to authorities.

Muhammed Momtaz Al-Azhari was arrested on Sunday following an investigation by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, which included police departments in Tampa, Clearwater and St. Petersburg and sheriff’s offices in Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough counties. If convicted, Al-Azhari faces up to 20 years in prison.

In a release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Al-Azhari expressed his admiration for Pulse nightclub shooter Omar Mateen and talked about his desire to conduct a similar mass shooting.

Al-Azhari researched and scouted out several potential targets in the Tampa Bay area, including Honeymoon Island, authorities said. He went as far as rehearsing the attacks, including what he would say during them, they said.

“We are grateful for the hard work and swift action by our law enforcement partners and concerned citizens during this investigation,” said U.S. Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez for the Middle District of Florida. “Their coordination and cooperation in this matter allowed us to interrupt a serious threat, without harm to anyone.”

Al-Azhari has a criminal history with terrorism charges in Saudi Arabia.

During the investigation, he tried to buy multiple firearms and eventually acquired a Glock pistol with a silencer, authorities said….

‘Incredible’: President Trump Hails NASA, SpaceX For Successful Launch

President Donald Trump praised NASA and SpaceX for a successful launch minutes after he watched the Falcon 9 rocket take flight in Florida on Saturday.

The Demo-2 mission came as a partnership between public sector NASA and private sector SpaceX and launched American astronauts into space from U.S. soil for the first time since 2011.

“I’m so proud of the people, of NASA, public and private. When you see a sight like that, it’s incredible,” Trump said. “When you hear that sound — the roar — you can imagine how dangerous it is.”

Trump also had praise for SpaceX founder Elon Musk, calling him a “great brain.” He also said the launch could be a symbol of recovery for Americans suffering through the COVID-19 pandemic as lockdown measures ease across the country.

“I think this is such a great inspiration for our country. Our country is doing well … We suffered something that was terrible. It should have never happened — it should have never come out of China,” Trump said. “That’s one of the reasons why I wanted to be here today and I think any one of you would say that was an inspiration to see what we just saw.”

The SpaceX rocket will take astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the International Space Station, but the company and NASA also plan on returning American astronauts to the moon and being the first to reach Mars.

Musk has found common ground with Trump throughout the pandemic, as both have emphasized the need to reopen world economies and criticized local and state leaders who have been slow to do so.

Musk threatened to move his Tesla automaker plant out of California due to the state’s social distancing rules, leading to tweets from Trump supporting the move, according to Fox News.

Exploiting George Floyd’s Death

99.9% of our American family is saddened and outraged over the wrongful death of George Floyd. We want the responsible police officer prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

And yet, rather than bringing our nation together, fake news media and Democrats are excitedly throwing gasoline on the flames of racial hate and division. Their message is America is still a hellhole of racism in which blacks are routinely murdered by whites and police. Blacks must continue voting for Democrats to keep racist white America at bay.

As expected, Democrats and fake news media are absurdly blaming Trump for Floyd’s death. These vile human beings in the media will say anyone wearing a MAGA hat is a racist complicit in Floyd’s death. Minneapolis rioters chanted, “Kill the white folks.”

The mayor of Minneapolis absurdly said the riots and looting in response to Floyd’s death are justifiable because they represent 400 years of pent-up black rage. That is such a crock of pandering leftist nonsense. The rioters are nothing more than paid domestic terrorists and ghetto-trash exploiting the incident to go on an illegal shopping spree.

The vast majority of the rioters wreaking havoc have never experienced an ounce of racism in their entire lives. Americans have been trained to know they better kiss blacks’ derrieres at every opportunity or suffer crucifixion by Democrats and fake news media. For crying out loud, beginning in kindergarten, leftist controlled public schools teach white students that they were born racist scum. Therefore, all whites must feel forever guilty, apologetic, and accommodating to blacks.

The dirty little secret is Democrats love creating race-based crisis because it allows them an opportunity to demand more sure-to-fail Ga-zillion dollar government-fix-it-programs which end up fattening Democrat pockets. Along with selling their lie that America sucks, Democrats believe spreading racial hate and division wins them votes.

When I speak of ghetto trash I am not referring to poor people. I was raised in an all-black 11 story high-rise government project in Baltimore Maryland. Grateful residents kept their apartments immaculate. Other residents were trifling ghetto trash with zero respect for the brand new building, taking every opportunity to destroy it. I was around 9 years old. Everyone told me everything wrong was always the white man’s fault. I said, “How can we stop mean white people from sneaking into our building at night; breaking the elevators, smashing liquor bottles, breaking light blobs, and urinating in the stairwells?”

Democrats are all over TV exploiting Floyd’s death to falsely claim that blacks are routinely persecuted today the way they were in the 1950s. Democrats and fake news media are behaving as if 8 years of America’s first black president never happened.

Sadly, the behavior of one bad cop, helps Democrats and fake news media demonize all cops. Data confirms that cops are the greatest defenders of black lives

In truth, the greatest threat to black lives is other blacks. Democrats and fake news media remain dead silent about 30 to 40 blacks murdering each other every weekend in urban Democrat hellholes like Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington DC. Shouldn’t those black lives matter? Where are the outrage and anger?

Democrats and fake news media only care about black lives when it furthers their socialist/communist political agenda.

Democrats and fake news media literally worship Planned Parenthood which targets blacks for abortion. Black women make up only 14% of the country’s childbearing population. And yet, 36% of all aborted babies are black. Democrats and fake news media actually celebrate the death of aborted black babies. Clearly, they are saying black baby lives do not matter.

As a proud grateful American who happens to be black, it is appalling to witness Democrats and fake news media exploiting the tragic death of Mr. Floyd. They are stirring the pot of racial hate to instigate violence while disrespecting blacks as useful idiots.

Blacks have experienced unprecedented prosperity and historic low unemployment under Trump. To separate black voters from Trump, insidiously evil Democrats will use Floyd’s death to outrageously say reelecting Trump will mean open season for police to murder blacks. As baseless and stupid as that sounds, it reflects Democrats’ low opinion of blacks. It is the sort of emotional brain-dead lie Democrats believe will win over easily deceived black voters.

FLORIDA: Governor Ron DeSantis Appoints Renatha Francis and John Couriel To Fill Vacancies on Florida Supreme Court

(Orlando, FL) Today, Governor Ron Desantis announced the appointment of Judge Renatha Francis and South Florida attorney John Couriel to the Florida Supreme Court. These two appointments replace former Justices Barbara Lagoa and Robert Luck, who were both promoted to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta by President Trump last year.

Judge Renatha Francis currently sits as a trial court judge on the 15th Circuit Court in Palm Beach, a position she was appointed to by Governor DeSantis in 2019 and immediately prior to that served as a county court judge in Miami Dade County.

John Couriel is a is a highly respected lawyer and a partner at law firm Kobre & Kim LLP based in Miami where he specializes in the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, money laundering, extradition and cross-border frauds involving financial products and services.Florida Family Policy Council President John Stemberger issued the following statements today regarding these appointments:

Judge Renatha Francis is a woman with an extraordinary life story, solid character and deep faith.  She has a personal depth and a grace in that will serve her well. I know her personally and she is also clear on the limited and restrained role of the court and is a “textualist” in the tradition of Clarence Thomas in her judicial philosophy. As the first Jamaican / Caribbean American Justice on the Florida Supreme Court, Francis is an experienced and brilliant choice for Florida’s future.” She is highly qualified with the unique perspectives of having served as a County Court judge, a Circuit Court judge, and ten years as a judicial law clerk for the First District Court of Appeals in Tallahassee. As a wife, mother and former business owner Judge Francis will bring valuable real life experiences with her to the court.”

Attorney John Couriel is a highly respected lawyer with stellar credentials and a conservative judicial philosophy.  Born in Miami, Florida, Couriel graduated from Harvard Magna Cum Laude and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School.  He has served as a law clerk to the Hon. John D. Bates of the U.S. District Court, D.D.C.  He also served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Florida for five years. Couriel is a member of the Federalist Society and speaks both English and Spanish fluently.  Couriel is giving up an extremely lucrative salary to serve on our state’s highest court. When I served as a member of the Judicial Nominating Commission for eight years, we were always impressed when we found candidates who were not pursuing judicial positions motivated by an increase in salary.  This is not the first time a practicing lawyer who has never served as a judge to be promoted directly to the Florida high court.  Several past Florida justices have served coming directly from private practice.”

Renatha Francis’ and John Couriel’s appointments will fill the final vacancy left on the Court after Justices Lagoa and Luck left late last year. However, there is a legal nuance about Francis’ appointment.  The Florida Constitution requires a Florida Supreme Court Justice to be a member of the Florida Bar as a lawyer for at least 10 years. Judge Francis’ bar membership began on September 24, 2010, which means that she could not fill the seat until later this year after September 24, 2020. However, both conservative and liberal legal scholars say that she can legally be appointed and not assume the office until September. Of interest, Judge Francis’ appointment was supported by many prominent black lawmakers, including the Florida Conference of Black State Legislators and the Legislative Black Caucus.  The Supreme Court has been without either a woman or African-American member since Justice Peggy A. Quince resigned in 2019.

Personal Background and Professional Bio of Renatha Francis:

Judge Renatha Francis was born in Portmore, Jamacia, in 1977.  Francis is a past student of St Hugh’s High school and the University of the West Indies, Mona, where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in law.  Afterwards, she migrated to the US, where she received her Juris-Doctor from Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, Florida in 2010. She primarily represented insurance providers in personal injury protection litigation matters, specializing in the interpretation and application of automobile insurance policies.  In 2017, Francis was appointed by Governor Rick Scott to the Miami-Dade County Court.  In 2018, she was appointed to the 11th Circuit Court, and in 2019, to the 15th Circuit Court.  She lives in South Florida with her husband Philip Fender and her two children.

Renatha Francis’ 59 page application to the Judicial Nominating Commission can be found here.

Renatha Francis’ interview before the from Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission can be watched on video 34:50 to 1:04:40 here.

Personal Background and Professional Bio of John Couriel:

Twitter censors Trump, claiming he’s ‘glorifying violence,’ keeps up Khamenei’s tweet calling for jihad violence

Twitter did this after the President’s Executive Order calling for an end to politically motivated censorship on Twitter. And so the war is on. It is clear from Twitter’s leaving up Khamenei’s tweet calling for jihad violence that they’re not censoring Trump out of concern about violence, but because he is the largest voice dissenting from their agenda. Once he is silenced, it will be easy to silence everyone else. Who appointed Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, and Mark Zuckerberg, and the clowns at Google/YouTube and the Southern Poverty Law Center, as the guardians of acceptable opinion and permitted speech? This sinister far-Left oligarchy must be broken or free society and free inquiry will be a thing of the past.

“White House slams Twitter for censoring US President Donald Trump but refusing to take action against glorification of Jihad,” OpIndia, May 29, 2020:

Donald Trump has been involved in a raging battle against social media giant Twitter after the latter included a ‘fact-check’ on a tweet he had made regarding mail-in ballots. Following the incident, the US president signed an executive order withdrawing liability protections that Twitter enjoyed. The next move came from Twitter and it censored Donald Trump’s tweet for ‘glorifying violence’. And now, the POTUS has hit back at the blatant political partisanship exhibited by the social media platform.

The White House on Friday hit back at twitter for not taking any action against Ayatollah Khamenei for glorifying Jihad in Palestine but censored a tweet made by Donald Trump which, according to the US President, did not glorify violence. The White House said that the tweet by Khamenei “violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence. However, @Twitter has determined that it will allow terrorists, dictators, and foreign propagandists to abuse its platform.”

The Folly of Twitter’s Fact Check

No American, not even the president, has an inherent right to a social media account. Tech companies are free to ban any user they see fit.

They’re free to fact-check anyone they want, to create a framework of acceptable speech, and to enforce their policies either consistently or capriciously. They’re free to accuse Donald Trump—and only Trump, if they see fit—of being a liar. They’re free to do all of these things.

Even if they shouldn’t.

Yesterday, after years of pressure from media and Democrats, Twitter labeled two of Trump’s tweets—in which he had claimed that the use of mail-in ballots for large numbers of people would be “substantially fraudulent” and result in a “rigged election”—as “potentially misleading.”

In these trying times, we must turn to the greatest document in the history of the world to promise freedom and opportunity to its citizens for guidance. Find out more now >>

It’s a mistake for any platform to drop its neutral stance and take on fact-checking duties, a task that’s going to be impossible to accomplish either objectively or effectively. It’s going to corrode trust in the brand, but it won’t change a single mind.

Once Twitter begins tagging some tweets and not others with “what you need to know,” it will be staking out partisan positions. The Trump tweets that precipitated its first fact check are a good example of this.

It would have been far more reasonable for the social media giant to label Trump’s ugly and slanderous tweets about Joe Scarborough as misleading. Instead, Twitter decided to inaugurate its policy by alleging that Trump had dishonestly claimed that mail-in ballots would lead to “a Rigged Election.”

Even if this contention were entirely baseless, it would be as untrue as saying Russia rigged the election—a claim that politicians such as Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi, along with most major media outlets, have been making for years.

But while the president’s rhetoric about voting is debatable, it is also well within the normal parameters of contemporary political discourse.

It’s not exactly “unsubstantiated” to assert that more mail-in ballots “would lead to voter fraud,” as Twitter holds. There are dozens of instances of potential voter fraud investigated every year. The Heritage Foundation has cataloged 1,285 prosecuted cases.

Which is to say that contending that “voter fraud” is a problem is no more misleading than contending tax cuts will hurt the poor or that repealing net neutrality rules will destroy the internet.

In practice, “voter fraud” is no more a conspiracy theory than is “voter suppression.” Both happen on occasion, yet there is no evidence that either has toppled the outcome of any modern election.

The problem is that only one of these two issues will earn a “more information” tag from Twitter, because only one of these two issues offends the sensibilities of the liberals whose concerns Twitter ultimately cares about.

In another tweet, Trump claimed that everyone in California will be mailed a ballot. This is factually untrue. But so is the pinned tweet of former Vice President Joe Biden: “I can’t believe I have to say this, but please don’t drink bleach.”

The president never instructed anyone to drink bleach, yet Biden repeats this incessantly, along with numerous other misleading statements about his record and GOP policies.

Which brings us to the problem: Who will Twitter designate as its judge? Its fact-checking page redirects users to debunkings by CNN, The Washington Post, Vox, HuffPost, and other outlets that often deceive their audiences with far more sophistication than the president. These outlets like to appeal to the authority of experts, but not experts whose conclusions contradict their own.

There is a reason we debate issues rather than appoint “truth magistrates” to hand down verdicts: For the most part, politics is a dispute not over facts but values.

As is often the case, Trump immediately ceded the high ground by threatening to “strongly regulate” or shut down social media platforms. Such threats are nothing new for this president, who has often menaced media with regulations and legal action, although one cannot help but notice a paradox.

Trump never follows through on his destructive threats to inhibit speech but does follow through on his promise to cram the courts full of judges who have deference for the First Amendment, while those who talk in the loftiest terms about the press tend to pressure tech companies to constrain interactions, to ban accounts, and to “fact check” their partisan foes.

The distress over social media is predicated on the idea that average Americans are too dim to grapple with the messiness of unfettered speech. Many leftists—those who wanted to institute Fairness Doctrines or overturn Citizens United—admit this openly when they suggest that unregulated speech is corroding “democracy.”

Trump is the first president to take advantage of direct, instantaneous access to millions of Americans. Whether this is helpful to his cause is debatable. Certainly, we are blessed that the president’s policies and rhetoric are often disconnected. Whatever the case, though, we have an entire industry that stands ready to challenge the veracity of his statements.

We don’t need Twitter to join in the fact-checking game. Silicon Valley doesn’t have the resources, knowledge, or people to do it correctly.

Biden ‘Paternalistic’ and ‘Bigoted’, Says Black Leader

WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com) – In the wake of Joe Biden’s “you ain’t black” comment currently going viral on social media, a black leader claims the former vice president has done nothing for the African-American community other than “lock them up.”

Former CNN commentator and now senior communications advisor for Black Media Affairs under President Trump, Paris Dennard believes it’s time to start realizing what Joe Biden and the Democratic Party are doing to black people.

Reminiscent of his “They’re going to put y’all back in chains” comment while campaigning as vice president against Mitt Romney in 2012, this recent controversy came during an exchange with black host Charlamagne tha God on the show The Breakfast Club.

Dennard emphatically states that this isn’t just a Biden “gaffe,” nor should it be seen that way. “We’ve got to stop calling these gaffes,” he urged. “We need to stop calling these ‘insensitive statements’. No, they’re bigoted. They’re racist, and it’s exposing Joe Biden’s long history. Stop giving him cover for being a bigot,” he said emphatically.

Tired of being told what party to vote for as a black American, Dennard notes he sees no other black or Democrat politician pushing back at what he calls Biden’s racism.

“I have been waiting to hear Ambassador Susan Rice, Senator Kamala Harris, Speaker Nancy Pelosi [and] Stacey Abrams stand up and say something about this, but they’re not because it’s not about the people [or] the black community,” Dennard stated. “It’s about the black vote. That’s all they’re concerned about. It’s all politics.”

Stop giving him cover for being a bigot.Tweet

Dennard does not appreciate white people telling him how to be black, or feeling pressure from other black people who insinuate he isn’t black enough if he votes Republican.

He said:

The RNC and the Trump campaign are going to be very aggressively going after Joe Biden. The impact of his statement not only was offensive to black Republicans or conservatives — or just free-thinking black Americans like myself who are supporting President Trump — but it’s also offensive to any black person who decides to just be a free thinker. … He’s essentially saying, “If you are not on my team — Joe Biden’s team — you’re not black.”

Identity politics begins with identity psychology, Dennard appreciates, i.e., being able to convince certain people they must act and vote in a particular way. He sees this type of coerced group-think as the Left’s method of maintaining power:

You have Joe Biden trying to put people in a box and think, “You’ve got to think the way I want you to think. If you don’t think that way I’m going to pull away your identity. I’m going to pull away your cultural connection. I’m going to say that you are not a part of the community.” That is an offensive thing to say, because this is exactly what they did during slavery. They wanted slaves to not be able to read and to write and to remain dumb and illiterate so that we wouldn’t be able to be educated and learned and advance and grow and prosper.

It takes a special kind of courage, Dennard contends, to do what the likes of Clarence Thomas, Candace Owens, Kanye West and other black Americans have done, being attacked by the liberal media establishment the entire way.

You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.Tweet

“It is a way to suppress the vote,” said Dennard. “It is a way to discourage people from daring to be able to do like Kanye West did and do like Vernon Jones did down in Georgia. … When you talk about voter suppression, this is a tactic from the Left that we’re seeing play out by their nominee.”

Dennard is convinced that in the 2020 presidential race, Biden is the one with racist tendencies, not Trump, as the mainstream media would have you think.

“Let’s start with the Clinton crime bill, which [Biden] wrote,” he said, noting that the former vice president has not “done anything to directly impact the black community in a positive way besides lock us up.”

“Let’s talk about how he talked about Barack Obama,” he continued, recalling Biden’s description of the former president as a black man who is “articulate, bright and clean.”

“Let’s talk about how he talked about Indian-Americans,” Dennard said, pointing to Biden’s 2006 suggestion that “You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.”

“Let’s talk about how he talked about black kids rubbing their hands on [his] leg because they had never seen curly hair, and ‘Corn Pop‘, and little roaches and people getting locked up for crossing the street,” Dennard added.

When you talk about voter suppression, this is a tactic from the Left that we’re seeing play out by their nominee.Tweet

In a new Rasmussen Reports Poll, most people remain suspicious of politicians who play the “race card,” seeing their references to racial topics as an attempt to win as opposed to fixing minorities’ problems. Yet, most black people still see Democrats as doing more for them than Republicans.

African-Americans (60%) who historically vote overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates are much more likely than either whites (44%) or other minority groups (49%) to believe the Democratic Party has done more for them than the Republican Party. One-third (33%) polled believe political candidates discuss racial issues too much, 34% too little and 24% believe the level of discussion is about right.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted May 24–25.

Recent Honor Killings: ‘Even During Corona, No Respect for Human Life’

Nothing seems to stop honor killings. One would think that with COVID-19 gripping the world, there would be more compassion for human life and caring for each other –as well in the Muslim world, especially during the month of Ramadan during which there is an emphasis on kindness, compassion, self-reflection and charity.

However, some things never change as we read about the recent honor killings in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

When the Clarion award-winning documentary Honor Diaries was released in 2013, there was a surge of awareness and some changes did take place internationally which were a step in the right direction. In October 2016, Pakistan passed a bill that fixed a loophole that allowed killers to escape prosecution if pardoned by the victim’s family.

Previously, family members who were complicit in the crime could also forgive those who had committed it.

That new legislation came three months after Qandeel Baloch, a Pakistani social media star and feminist, was killed by her brother for “dishonoring the family.”

While honor killings in Pakistan now carry a life sentence, they remain common in Pakistan’s remote tribal areas — and the majority are against women perceived to have brought “shame” to their families.

In Pakistan, two women were murdered in a so-called “honor killing” after a video showing them kissing a man circulated online.

The cousins, aged 22 and 24, were shot and buried on May 14 in a remote village in Pakistan’s North Waziristan province.

In a statement, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said that many people who had condemned the Waziristan murders on social media had been “threatened or ridiculed” and called on the authorities to “make it clear to all that it will not tolerate any support for this heinous practice.”

Adding to the horror of the act, the father of one of the victims and the other victim’s brother confessed to killing the women.

This clearly shows that the concept of honor is more important to the men than the lives of the women they kill.

In Afghanistan, with the departure of U.S. troops, there was always fear that the Taliban would go back to their inhuman practices. Yet, the latest honor killing in Badakhshan, Afghanistan was not even Taliban related.

Nazela, an 18-year-old woman, was strangled with electric wire and then stabbed to death by her brother on May 1. She allegedly ran away with her boyfriend, taking refuge in a police station. Her brother came and had her released, took her home and killed her. The brother then escaped to an area where Islamist militants live. He has now taken refuge with the Taliban.

The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission writes in its 2018/2019 Summary Report on Violence against Women that violence against women in 2019 was about 8.4 percent higher than in 2018.

According to this report, while various types of violence against women are on the rise, “one of the shocking forms of physical violence that leads to the killing of women is honor killings. The Commission has documented about 238 incidents of murder of women separately during this period [2019], 96 of which constitute honor killings. This figure was about 261 in 2018.”

Until the time that men and women in rural areas are educated about respect for human life and especially for women, this horrific cycle of honor-related killings will not go away.

Unfortunately, the perpetrators are not afraid of prison or death because they have been brainwashed into believing that the honor of the family, tribe and village is embodied in the actions and bodies of women whom they treat like second-class human beings, and that preserving the so-called honor of the family is more important than a human life.

VIDEO: Kayleigh McEnany Calls Out Twitter For Not Fact Checking Chinese Propaganda

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany called out Twitter for not fact checking Chinese propaganda after the social media giant added fact check labels to some of President Donald Trump’s tweets.

“We have seen some egregious actions by Twitter, for them to single out the president’s tweet which is a very truthful tweet,” McEnany told Fox News Thursday. “You’ve got to ask yourself what kind of political motivation was there in them doing that when they were not signaling, until minutes ago, before I walked out here. They were not fact checking Chinese propaganda that was blaming COVID on the United States Military.”

A spokesman for the Chinese Communist Party has repeatedly blamed the U.S. Military for the coronavirus pandemic, even though the virus originated in Wuhan. (RELATED: Eight Ways America Is Becoming More Like China)

McEnany also ripped Yoel Roth, Twitter’s head of site security, who donated to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, and has compared Trump administration officials to Nazis.

“He’s the one making the determination on fact checks? He’s part of that team?” McEnany asked. “That’s pretty egregious and Twitter needs to answer for this and for their behavior.”

WATCH:

The president lashed out at social media companies Wednesday after Twitter added fact check labels to some of his tweets about mail-in-voting, and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough.

“Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices,” Trump said. “We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen.”

The president is expected to sign an executive order Thursday, targeting social media companies that allegedly engage in political discrimination. The news come as Republicans in Congress work to strip Twitter of their Section 230 protections, arguing that the company acts more like a publisher than a platform.

A Twitter spokesperson told the Daily Caller that they have flagged Chinese propaganda on their site before.

“These Tweets (here and here) contain potentially misleading content about COVID-19 and have been labeled to provide additional context to the public. These actions are in line with the approach we shared earlier this month,” the spokesperson said.

FLORIDA: Congressional Candidate Laura Loomer To Resume Campaign Activities Amongst Growing Support

PALM BEACH, Fla. /PRNewswire/ — Laura Loomer, Republican candidate for Congress in Florida’s 21st District, home to President and Mrs. Trump, will officially resume campaign activities on June 1st, 2020 as Florida, under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, moves into Phase 2 of the reopening process following the Chinese Virus Pandemic.

Laura Loomer stated, “My campaign is looking forward to safely resuming campaign activities to win Florida’s 21st Congressional seat.  Governor DeSantis is doing a great job setting an example for the nation’s governors by leading Florida into Phase 2 and ending the lockdown. Just as Florida’s businesses are eager to get back to work and Floridians are waiting in anticipation to venture outside, so are we!”

On March 9thLaura Loomer for Congress was the first federal campaign in the nation to temporarily halt events and public activities like door knocking due to the Coronavirus pandemic.  Loomer instructed volunteers and staff to assist with community needs such as blood drives and mask making for first responders.

Karen Giorno, President Trump’s 2016 Florida State Director and chief strategist for the Loomer campaign commented, “Laura is running against Lois Frankel who advocates for an indefinite shutdown while abdicating her duties with proxy votes in Congress.  Moreover, Frankel is more interested in pushing for easily manipulated absentee voting in November, instead of focusing on rebuilding Florida’s economy.  Florida needs and deserves better, and that’s Laura Loomer.”

In addition to endorsements from Roger Stone, Rep. Paul GosarMichelle Malkin, and Judge Jeanine PirroLaura Loomer has secured endorsements from Rush Limbaugh’s producer “Bo Snerdley”, Hollywood conservative Chuck Woolery, and comedian Roseanne Barr.

Last month, President Trump retweeted support for Laura Loomer’s campaign, which he has now done twice since Loomer filed to run for Congress in the Mar a Lago district.

Loomer closed by saying, “While my opponent Lois Frankel continues to socially distance herself from the concerns and needs of Florida 21 voters, I’m excited to listen to the voters around the district including 2020 graduates who were forced to have virtual graduations and were robbed of meaningful life milestones. Additionally, Florida 21 small businesses need our help and my campaign will do all that we can to assist their efforts to rebuild while we work to flip this seat red!”

VIDEO: Naturalized US citizen, former DC cab driver, indicted for attempting to join jihad terror group

When Liban Haji Mohamed was admitted into the country as a “refugee” and later granted American citizenship, was any attempt made to determine his views vis-a-vis Islamic jihad violence? Of course not. Any such endeavor would have been denounced as “Islamophobic.”

“Somali Refugee Indicted for Attempting to Join Islamic Terrorist Group,” by John Binder, Breitbart, May 26, 2020:

A Somali-born naturalized United States citizen was indicted this week for allegedly attempting to join Islamic terrorist group al-Shabab.

Liban Haji Mohamed, a 34-year-old Somali native who has been previously identified as a refugee to the U.S., was indicted on charges he allegedly conspired and attempted to provide material support to al-Shabab.

Mohamed was placed on the FBI’s “Most Wanted List” back in January 2015 after the alleged terrorist had a “red notice” issued for him by Interpol.

Mohamed, according to a criminal complaint, allegedly left the U.S. in July 2012 by crossing the southern border into Mexico with the intent to join al-Shabab in Somalia. Mohamed, prosecutors allege, wanted to fight for al-Shabab and help recruit Westerners.

In one case, Mohamed attempted to recruit an undercover federal agent to join al-Shabab in Somalia. Mohamed, prosecutors say, was a close associate of terrorist Zachary Chesser who was convicted for trying to provide material support to al-Shabab.

As previously reported, sources have said that Mohamed first arrived in the U.S. as a refugee and was then allowed to adjust his status to become a lawful permanent resident. After adjusting his immigration status, the federal government allowed Mohamed to become a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Mohamed previously drove cabs in Washington, D.C. area and lived in the suburbs of Fairfax County, Virginia….

WHERE DOES THE HATE COME FROM? How people use the Internet to vent their rage at Republicans.

Last week it was pointed out to me that most of the protests over coronavirus shutdowns in Democrat controlled states were by Republicans, particularly in Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Critics thought the protesters were being unreasonable in combating the virus and hateful towards the government. As Democrats have said when they protest, this is nothing more than a First Amendment right of the people to peaceably assemble. Yes, they are upset with the governors in terms of wanting to reopen the state so they can go back to work, but this is far from bring offensive.

What I find particularly hateful and vicious is the discourse from Democrats emanating from Twitter, the popular social media platform. Recently, I discovered several hashtag accounts representing some rather nasty people, to wit:

Republicans are destroying America – one user contended, “Where is the racist group GOP? Oh that’s right, they don’t give a crap cause they agree with and enable a racist, lying, xenophobic, corrupt reality TV figure. Kudos GOP, you are a stain on America.” (And this was one of the nicer entries).

Republicans for Biden – Interestingly, most people in this group fail to identify themselves. I therefore suspect it is a fraud perpetrated by someone else.

Republicans Virus – this is used to blame the GOP for the devastation of the COVID-19 panic.

Republicans Are Killing Us – Another forum to blame Republicans for the virus.

GOP Corruption Over Country – a lot of nasty accusations here.

GOP Genocide – Here, again, the GOP is painted as baby killers.

Trump Lies, People Die – more accusations of incompetence and carelessness.

Not My President – more name calling (including “Deplorables”) and finger pointing.

The hate from these groups is massive and unimaginable. Frankly, I was surprised that nobody was reprimanded by Twitter for their tongue. Interestingly, I earnestly sought Republican counterparts to these groups using words such as those shown above along with others. The closest thing I could find was:

Democrats the Enemy Within – accusations of wrong-doing, but without the venom.

Democrats Hate America – pretty much the same.

This was all I could find in this regard. This either means Republicans are either more civil in their discourse or perhaps this is another instance of censorship by social media to favor Democrats.

Keep in mind, this is but one social media, there are many others also producing such venom.

The hate spewed forward by the Democrats is reckless and scary. However, if they are trying to intimidate the Republicans, I think their rhetoric is backfiring on them as it is forcing Republicans closer together as opposed to scaring them off.

All of this hints at the problems people have with the Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). At first, I thought this to be a joke, but now I’m convinced it is a legitimate problem. How do you know you have TDS, well, to paraphrase comedian Jeff Foxworthy:

“You might have Trump Derangement Syndrome if…”

  • you blame the President for everything.
  • you believe Nancy Pelosi & Chuck Schumer only have the best interests of the country in mind.
  • you see nothing wrong with the shenanigans of Antifa.
  • you believe AOC is a brilliant intellectual.
  • you think it’s time to replace the Constitution with something else.
  • you believe Socialism should supersede Capitalism.
  • you believe you are entitled to a plethora of freebies, including education, housing, etc.
  • you still live in the basement of your parents’ house.

I just wish curing Trump Derangement Syndrome was as simple as giving everyone a dose of saltpeter.

Keep the Faith!

Twitter Uses Fact-Checking as a Weapon Against Trump

Fact-checking sounds innocuous enough. After all, as the late Senate Democrat Patrick Moynihan reportedly once said, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.”

But Twitter just showed that fact-checking can also be weaponized, used in a way that promotes one side’s ideology over another.

The tech giant, which has been under pressure from the left for years to censor or delete President Donald Trump’s tweets, did a “fact check” Tuesday on two of Trump’s tweets about mail-in ballots.

Conveniently for liberals, the fact check, which cited media outlets like The Washington Post and CNN as its only named sources, found that Trump’s facts were wrong. Notably, it was also the first time Twitter—which hosts politicians across the ideological spectrum—fact-checked a tweet.

In these trying times, we must turn to the greatest document in the history of the world to promise freedom and opportunity to its citizens for guidance. Find out more now >>

Unsurprisingly, Trump was furious, threatening in a tweet Wednesday to “strongly regulate, or close them down” in reference to social media companies. He also said: “Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives [sic] voices.”

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1265601611310739456?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1265601615261827072%7Ctwgr%5E&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailysignal.com%2F2020%2F05%2F27%2Ftwitter-uses-fact-checking-as-a-weapon-against-trump%2F

Neither Trump nor Twitter is in the right here. As a private company, Twitter should be legally free to do what it wants on its own platform. Trump is free to suggest that Americans who value serious debate and free expression, regardless of their ideologies, boycott Twitter. But this is no case for government intervention in a private business.

However, unless the goal was to be seen as a left-leaning company, Twitter was irresponsible and foolish with its “fact check”—which I’m putting in scare quotes because it’s not even an accurate fact check.

Here are the two Trump tweets that got slapped with the fact-checking label from Twitter:

Twitter posted below Trump’s tweet: “Get the facts about mail-in ballots.” When you click on that, it takes you to this message:

Trump makes unsubstantiated claim that mail-in ballots will lead to voter fraud

On Tuesday, President Trump made a series of claims about potential voter fraud after California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced an effort to expand mail-in voting in California during the COVID-19 pandemic. These claims are unsubstantiated, according to CNN, Washington Post and others. Experts say mail-in ballots are very rarely linked to voter fraud.

First of all, it’s simply not true that “mail-in ballots are very rarely linked to voter fraud,” or that Trump’s claim was “unsubstantiated.”

The Daily Signal’s national affairs correspondent, Fred Lucas, reported last month on “15 instances in which courts threw out an election result based in whole or in part on absentee voting fraud,” citing The Heritage Foundation’s Election Fraud Database and other sources.

Then there’s Twitter’s telling attribution: “These claims are unsubstantiated, according to CNN, Washington Post and others.”

Ah, yes, CNN, whose White House correspondent Jim Acosta basically has been engaged for years in verbal sparring with Trump. And the Post, which has its own reputation as a liberal outlet, is hardly a completely objective source, either.

So who are these “others”? Did Twitter consult with anyone, researcher or journalist or scholar, at a less liberal publication or institution? Did Twitter make any good faith attempt to consult with a variety of experts of differing ideological leanings, so that it could see the full context and data before making a ruling?

Because if Twitter is only relying on liberals for its fact-checking, it won’t be surprising if the supposedly unbiased fact-checking becomes quite ideological.

Unfortunately, conservatives have reason for concern here. The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Peter Hasson reports:

The Twitter official [Yoel Roth] overseeing the tech company’s efforts to combat misinformation is a left-wing partisan who in the past has derided President Donald Trump as a ‘wretched orange man’ and said he donated to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Of course, ultimately, Twitter is a private company and it can choose its own standards and practices. But consumers are also free to decide whether to remain on a platform that seems to be on the cusp of implementing a double standard when it comes to fact-checking.

It will be extremely telling what Twitter chooses to do in the days ahead.

Will the social media company fact-check liberals, too—or will Trump alone bear the stigma of a fact check? Will fact checks rely only on liberal sources, or will they involve conservative sources as well? Will Twitter modify its fact check of Trump’s tweet, acknowledging that instances of voter fraud are tied to absentee ballots?

No doubt, Twitter has been under unusually high pressure from the left in recent days.

A widower wrote to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey this month, distraught that Trump was tweeting conspiracy theories that the man’s late wife, a staffer for then-Rep. Joe Scarborough, had been murdered.

While Trump’s tweets on this matter are shameful—if he wants to fight with Scarborough, now an MSNBC host, he can do so without bringing up an unrelated person’s death—the answer is not for Twitter to take action on Trump’s tweets.

As we’ve been saying more and more over the past decade and change, America is a divided nation, with heated opinions on both sides on a host of topics. Selective fact-checking, aimed at the right and only looking to the left for the truth, will only increase that division.

Twitter has opened a real Pandora’s box here. Let’s hope the tech giant realizes its mistake, takes down the fact check of Trump’s accurate tweet, and returns to being a company that merely hosts, not criticizes, viewpoints.
